Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvar cannot call its beer 'Bud' in Hungary. However, it can call it 'Budweiser'. That was the last decision and the last announcement of the Hungarian Patent Office in the latest chapter in a battle between the state-owned brewery and American brewer Anheuser-Busch.

“Budejovicky Budvar claims it is located where the name Budweiser was born and therefore has a historical right to sell beer under the name. Anheuser-Busch says it began using the trademark in 1876, 19 years before the Czech brewer was established,” Just-drinks.com reported.

“The Hungarian regulator turned down the appellation of origin request, concluding that 'Bud' is not a reference to the city of Ceské Budejovice, where Budejovicky Budvar is located. It will, however, allow the Czech brewer to keep calling its beer, 'Budweiser.”
