Australia: Barley pool estimates increase again

ABB Grain Ltd has reviewed its gross barley pool indicators for 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 and has again increased its South Australian, Victorian an East Coast estimates for malting barley and ‘new season’ feed barley, ABB Grain released September 27 (figures in AU$ unless stated).

ABB Grain’s General Manager Marketing, Nigel Officer, said that ongoing dry conditions in Australia, a shortage in supply of good quality European barley, lower production in North America with reduced exports out of Canada, besides a firming in feed values out of the Black Sea had contributed to the revisions.

In the 2006/2007 No.1 pools, malting barley gross estimates rise by $14/tonne, to $220/t, while feed rises by $12/t to $187/t.

For the 2005/2006 pools, ABB Grain has raised its No.1 malting barley gross estimate by $2/tonne, to $204/t. Feed barley No.1 remains unchanged at $165/t.

Gross estimates for last season’s and new season’s barley are now as follows:

South Australian pools 2005/2006 season
No. 1 malting (closed January 24) $204/tonne
No.1 feed (closed January 24) $165/tonne
No.2 malting (opened January 24) $186/tonne
No.2 feed (opened January 24) $152/tonne
2006/2007 season
No.1 malting $220/tonne
No.1 feed $187/tonne

For 2005/2006 season pools, ABB Grain has raised its Victorian No.1 malting barley gross estimate by $2/tonne, to $209/t. Feed barley No.1 remains unchanged at $170/t.

In the east coast No.2 pools (Victoria, NSW and Queensland), malting barley gross estimates also have been raised by $2/t, to $204/t, while feed is unchanged at $165/t.

The gross estimates for 2005/2006 season barley are now as follows:

Victorian and East Coast pools 2005/2006 season
Victorian No. 1 malting (closed October 31, 2005) $209/tonne
