USA: Granite City has banned sale of 40 ounces or larger glass bottles of beer
The Metro East community of Granite City has banned the sale of beer in glass bottles that are 40 ounces or larger, Saint Louis Kmov-TV released November 23.
The ordinance approved this week is a compromise. Granite City police had wanted the city council to ban the sale of beer in both bottles and cans that are 24 ounces and larger.
Police Chief Rich Miller says such beers, often concealed in paper bags, are favored by troublemakers and promote street drinking.
But some residents complained that the proposal was too restrictive, and beer distributors said it would hurt sales.
The new ordinance doesn't apply to the sale of kegs or other containers that are larger than three gallons.
