About hydrphobic interactions
ABSTRACT
Numerous components from hops are hydrophobic and flavour active and a lot of brewers would like to better understand the interaction of these components with the yeast cells. These Japanese researchers looked into the yeast cell surface hydrophobicity and the interaction with different hop components. They were able to prove that the content of myrcene, humulene, farnesene and cohumulone increases
in the extracts of yeast cells and therefor decreases in the beer. The concentrations of linalool and isohumulones were not affected. Therefore the cell surface hydrophobicity as well as the flocculation properties influence the itensity and quality of hop aroma and hop derived bitterness.

USA: Beer sales in convenience stores up 2.1% in August
|
Convenience store sales of beer increased 2.1% in dollar terms in the four weeks ended Aug. 31, according to Nielson data, Barron’s reported on September 20.
That compares to a 1.9% increase last period and 1.5% rise over the last 52 weeks, notes Citigroup’s Vivien Azer, a good showing, considering challenging year-over-year numbers.
She writes that volumes declined for the eighth consecutive month, but looking forward, comparable sales for convenience stores should get easier in the last quarter of the year, given light 2012 volume growth. However, consumers still seem very price sensitive.
Molson Coors’ MillerCoors JV posted a 3.4% volume decline in the period (vs. 3.3% last period and -2.5% over the last 52 weeks). As such, the company’s volume share was down for the fifth consecutive month. Dollar sales were down 1.8% YoY (vs. -1.8% last period and -0.6% over the last 52 weeks), as the company saw a 1.7 pt benefit from price/mix (vs. 1.5 pts last period and 2.0 pts over the last 52 weeks).
Constellation Brands’ Crown Imports continued its relative outperformance, posting dollar sales growth of 14.3% YoY (vs. +16.0% last period and +13.4% over the last 52 weeks). Volumes were the key driver once again, +15.0%

USA, MO: O’Fallon Brewery to open an $8mln beer plant
|
O’Fallon Brewery is set to establish a new beer plant, which is capable of brewing 25,000 barrels, with $8m investment, Drinks Business Review reported on September 25.
As production at O'Fallon Brewery's current facility in O'Fallon, Missouri is unable to meet growing demand, the company has taken this decision.
The brewery also expects to produce 11,000 barrels, including 3,000 barrels in its O'Fallon facility and another 8,000 barrels at a contract brewery in Wisconsin in 2013.
O'Fallon Brewery president Jim Gorczyka was said in an interview that the brewery is going through a tremendous growth curve.
"We think it's very important for us to bring that brewing and packaging and sales back into the St. Louis market," Gorczyka added.
"Our goal is to be brewing at a new facility in approximately 18 to 24 months."
The brewery has increased its production to 10,800 barrels in 2012 from 5,600 barrels in 2011.

USA, CO: Odell Brewing launches Fernet Aged Porter
|
This September, Odell Brewing will release Fernet Aged Porter, a robust imperial porter aged in emptied Fernet barrels from Colorado distiller, Leopold Bros, Drinks Business Review reported on September 24.
Odell Brewing began collecting the emptied Fernet barrels, as they became available over the past year, and filled them with a rich porter. The herb-soaked oak has a remarkable effect on the beer. With an 9.8% ABV, the roasty chocolate malt character is infused with hints of mint and licorice creating a decadent aroma and flavor.
Odell Brewing and Leopold Bros. will celebrate their partnership with a special release party on September 26th at 7:00 p.m. at Freshcraft in Denver, and in the brewery’s Tap Room on September 28th and 29th. Fernet Aged Porter will be available in limited quantities throughout the brewery’s ten state distribution footprint.

Canada, ON: Sweetgrass Brewing to open in Toronto
|
The long-established Toronto gastropub The Auld Spot have branched out into brewing with the launch of a new house ale, Canadian Beer News reported on September 24.
Operating under the name Sweetgrass Brewing and brewing under contract at Wellington Brewery in Guelph, the new imprint was debuted earlier this month with the release of Sweetgrass Golden Ale, a 4.9% unfiltered Belgian-style ale described as having “notes of lemon followed by a subtle malty bitterness and a clean, dry finish”.
Sweetgrass Golden Ale is available now at The Auld Spot, and has also been tapped at other craft beer bars in Toronto including The Only Cafe and Tequila Bookworm.

USA, LA: Post Brewing to open in Lafayette, Louisiana
|
Post Brewing Co plans to open in November in Lafayette, Louisiana, Daily Camera Lafayette News reported on September 22.
The restaurant originally targeted an opening date in September, but renovations continue at the restaurant site, formerly the Lafayette Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
In late July, the Lafayette Urban Renewal Authority approved a $75,000 loan to Big Red F restaurateur Dave Query to help enhance the facade of The Post.
The urban renewal authority obtained plans from Big Red F in early July but wanted to add some changes to the facade to draw more attention to the building.
Big Red F operates Jax Fish House, Centro Latin Kitchen and The West End Tavern.

USA, MN: Schell Brewing to collaborate with Gold Ochsen to produce August Bock
|
August Schell Brewing of US has partnered with German-based brewery Gold Ochsen to produce their first collaborative beer - August Bock, Drinks Business Review reported on September 23.
Brewed in the blond doppelbock style, the new beer is deep golden amber in colour and rich in flavour.
The new beer will be available in 6-packs, 1/6 barrels and 1/2 barrels and will be introduced in November 2013.

Canada, ON: Muskoka Brewery releases Winter Jack Barrel Aged Stout
|
Muskoka Brewery has announced the release of an exclusive limited edition version of its popular winter seasonal, Canadian Beer News reported on September 24.
Winter Jack Barrel Aged is a variation of the 2011 vintage of Winter Beard Double Chocolate Cranberry Stout that has been aged in Tennessee Whiskey barrels.
Winter Jack is available now in individual 355 ml bottles at the Muskoka Brewery store in Bracebridge, and it will be available at select licensees in October. The 2013 edition of the regular Winter Beard will be released in November throughout Ontario.

Canada, AB: Big Rock releases Family Jewels Mixed Pack

Big Rock Brewery has announced the release of a new mixed pack that pairs up two new beers with two from the brewery’s year-round selection, Canadian Beer News reported on September 24.
Family Jewels is a new sampler 12-pack that includes three bottles each of the classic Traditional Ale (5% abv & 20 IBU) and Scottish Style Heavy Ale (7% abv & 17 IBU), and the brand new Monkey’s Fist Royal IPA (7.5% abv & 73 IBU) and Gerstemeister Marzen (5.5% abv & 19 IBU).
Big Rock Family Jewels will be available throughout the fall in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

Canada, BC: Vancouver Island Brewery to release Black Betty Blackberry Saison
|
Vancouver Island Brewery has looked back to a classic 1970s rock song to draw inspiration for a new beer in its line-up of limited seasonal releases, Canadian Beer News reported on September 24.
Black Betty Blackberry Saison is a 6.3% abv ale that was brewed using blackberries from local winery and berry farm Coastal Black.
Black Betty Blackberry Saison is available now in a limited run of 650 ml bottles. An open house celebrating its release along with this year’s edition of Storm Watcher Winter Lager will take place at the Vancouver Island Brewery (2330 Government Street, Victoria) on Saturday, October 5th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.

Heineken intends to reorganize its production activities in France, Derničres Nouvelles d’Alsace reported on September 23.
The company plans to move the production of 500,000 hl of beer (or one third of the total volume brewed at the plant) from its Alsace facility to two other breweries: 430,000 hl to the brewery in Mons-en-Baroeuil (north of France) and the rest to its Marseille facility.
The brewer explained its decision by the desire to move more of the production volume closer to its logistics centers.

Romania: SABMiller’s Ursus Breweries invested over EUR 90 mln in its Buzau brewery
|
SABMiller-owned Ursus Breweries has invested over EUR 90 million in the last eight years to revamp its production unit in Buzau, Romania, Romania-Insider.com reported on September 23.
Ursus Breweries president Andrew Highcock, quoted by local news agency Agerpres, said the project was the largest investment ever made in the city.
“From 2005 to present, Ursus Breweries invested over EUR 90 million in revamping its factory in Buzau, the production capacity increasing by 150 percent,” Highcock said.
“The factory in Buzau was the first acquisition South African group SABMiller made in Romania and also the largest investment made in this city.”
Ursus Breweries’ brands include Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Pilsner Urquell, Grolsch, Ursus, Redd`s, Timisoreana, Ciucas and Stejar.
The beer producer currently owns three breweries in Brasov, Buzau and Timisoara and a mini production unit in Cluj.

Australia: Coca-Cola Amatil re-entry in the beer market coming at an interesting time

Coca-Cola Amatil is readying itself to re-enter the beer and cider market in mid-December, having been in self-imposed exile from the market for the past two years, The Motley Fool reported on September 25.
According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Coca-Cola Amatil has created a new management structure for the reinvigorated alcoholic beverages division, which will be headed by Mr Shane Richardson, previously the head of Campari Australia.
Coca-Cola’s re-entry to the beer and cider market comes at an interesting time. According to a recent report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), it appears Australian consumers “tastes may be swinging away from beer and towards wine.” In fact, according to the ABS beer consumption is now at its lowest point in 66 years! In contrast, wine consumption is believed to be trending upwards.
The ABS findings on their own would suggest Coca-Cola Amatil is heading into the wrong market whereas Treasury Wine Estates is in exactly the right market; however it isn’t that simple of course. South Korea: Oriental Brewery to launch its first ale by the end of the year
|
Oriental Brewery, South Korea’s largest beer maker, announced plans to launch its first ale, Yonhap News reported on September 23.
The company intends to introduce its new product in the lager-dominated market already by the end of this year.
The nation’s second-largest brewer, Hite Jinro, was Korea’s first large brewer to launch an ale, called Queen’s Ale, on September 5, after three years of research and cooperation with the Danish research institute Alectia.
“The ale we plan to launch will be different from our rival Hite Jinro’s,” an Oriental Brewery representative is quoted as saying. “To be ahead of the ale market, we will launch a product with a special taste.”
