Scientific Digest
Which aroma components should be measured if you want to characterize a certain hop variety in a beer?
ABSTRACT
This question was addressed by a Belgian researcher who produced trial beers with 6
different hop varieties using late hopping and a combination of late and dry hopping. With the determination of 44 different hop aroma components using HS-SPME GC-MS they were able to show strong varietal differences. The major differences between late hopping and late and dry hopping were found in different concentrations of oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Still, the sensory evaluations for
a better comparision will be presented in the near future. However they observed that for most of the beers, the aging flavour developed to a higher extent if dry hopping was applied. Read more

Italy: AB InBev to stop selling its flagship beer in Italy under the Budweiser brand name
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV said it will stop selling its flagship beer in Italy under the Budweiser brand name - calling it Bud instead - following an unfavorable ruling from the Italian Supreme Court, The Wall Street Journal reported on October 8.
"While the decision does not include an order prohibiting our use of Budweiser in Italy, we will transition to the Bud brand [there] to make sure that there is no disruption in the supply," said Karen Couck, an AB InBev spokeswoman. AB InBev, the world's largest brewing group, will continue to fight for the rights to the Budweiser trademark in Italy, she added.
The row centers on who has rights to use the name Budweiser - AB InBev or Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvar NP. The two brewers have been fighting over the brand name for years. Both claim rights to the brand and its iterations in various jurisdictions around the globe.
In Italy, a lower court had previously determined that the Budweiser brand in the modern day has no connection with the Czech town of Budejovice, or Budweis in German, and therefore was no obstacle to AB InBev's use of the name. But that ruling has now been overturned. Italy's Supreme Court

USA: Anheuser-Busch’s Project 12 back with three new beers
|
Budweiser’s Project 12 – the brewmaster innovation platform that resulted in the introduction of Budweiser Black Crown – is back with three new beers named for the ZIP codes where the beers were brewed, beginning October 28, Brewbound reported on October 8.
Budweiser’s team of brewmasters develop new beer recipes featuring the signature yeast first used by Adolphus Busch in 1876, creating brews that exhibit Budweiser’s clean and crisp taste while expanding the brand’s offerings.
“Our brewmasters are the best in the business and the quality of our brewing standards is unmatched,” said Brian Perkins, vice president, Budweiser. “’Project 12’ showcases our brewmasters at the top of their game, challenging them to create new recipes that stay true to the Budweiser taste profile while also introducing unique, new flavors.”
The three small-batch Budweisers named for the ZIP code where the beer is brewed include:
Batch 94534 (Fairfield, Calif.): Brewed with a unique blend of North Pacific hop varieties, including Cascade and Palisade, this bold, hoppy lager is 5.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) and offers a distinct taste of the American Northwest.
Batch 23185 (Williamsburg, Va.): Aged on a bed of bourbon barrel staves and vanilla beans, this light amber lager indulges the sweet side

Belarus: Carlsberg’s Olivaria Brewery appoints new CEO
|
Carlsberg-controlled Olivaria Brewery in Belarus has appointed a new CEO. Denis Sherstennikov will replace Mikhail Chechenev, who decided to leave the company for personal reasons, Pivnoe Delo reported on October 8.
Carlsberg has been active in Belarus through exports from Baltika in Russia and since December 2006, also through a shareholding in the privately owned Olivaria Brewery.
According to Carlsberg website, Belarus has a current annual beer consumption of 47 litres per person.
The Olivaria Brewery in Minsk was established in 1864. It has 531 employees and a brewing capacity of 700,000 hl. Olivaria is one of the most recognised brands in Belarus with a market share of approximately 17.4%.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) had been a major shareholder in Olivaria since 2005 and was looking for an international partner to help develop the business. It now holds 21% of the shares, while the Carlsberg Group holds 67.8% of shares.

USA: Coors Light to launch citrus-flavored summer beer next year
|
Coors Light will launch a citrus-flavored summer beer next year and Redd’s is planning an iced tea version of its ale, a spokeswoman from parent company MillerCoors LLC was quoted as saying by The Business Journal on October 4.
Coors Light Summer was unveiled during Chicago-based MillerCoors’ distributors conference last week in Las Vegas.
“I can confirm that we will be offering a Coors Light summer line extension. It’ll be citrus and only available in cans,” MillerCoors spokeswoman Cat Corrigan said. “It will be available Memorial Day (2014) until supplies last.”
The move follows the success of fruit-flavored beers from MillerCoors brands like Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy (wheat beer plus lemonade flavor) and Blue Moon Belgian White (a citrus-flavored Belgian-style wheat ale). Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. introduced an Orange Shandy this year, and its entire shandy line has shown strong growth.
Corrigan also confirmed that Redd’s will add an iced tea beverage to its ale lineup that already includes apple and strawberry.

Russia: Wheat prices continue to rise amid growing risks for next year’s harvest
|
Russia's wheat export prices continued to rise last week amid growing risks for next year's harvest as a smaller area is expected to be sown with winter grains than originally planned, Reuters reported on October 7.
Russia is expected to be the world's fifth-largest wheat exporter in 2013/14 after a recovery in its total wheat harvest to 50 million tonnes last season. Concerns over next year's harvest are rising, however, due to bad weather. Rains are expected to slash Russia's area for winter grains sowing this year and the winter wheat crop in 2014, signalling more risks for next year's global supply, analysts said earlier this week.
Its export prices for wheat with 12.5 percent protein content rose to $260 per tonne last week from $253 a week earlier in the Black Sea on a free-on-board (FOB) basis, the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) said in a note. Prices for wheat with the same protein content rose $7 to $235 per tonne in the Azov Sea, it added. Meanwhile, prices for wheat with 11.5 percent protein content rose $6 to $255-260 per tonne on an FOB basis in deepwater ports, according to SovEcon Agriculture analysts.
Russia is officially expected to
