The answer to a lot of questions?
ABSTRACT
The dream of all hop aroma researchers is to identify all
sensory relevant components that cause the different
unique hop aromas in beer. Maybe Inui et al have come
pretty close to answering at least some important
related questions. Brewing five single variety trial beers
(with Hallertauer Mittelfrueh, Hallertauer Tradition, Saaz,
Perle, Cascade) they looked into the correlation of six
specified sensory aroma characteristics in beer with
analytical results of GCxGC/TOF-MS measurements.
The relevant components to six generic hop aroma
characteristics were verified by multivariate analysis of
organoleptic evaluation together with component
analysis results. Those components with significant
differences among five hopped beers were selected.
These initially 297 could further be narrowed down to
67 compounds. Their conclusion is that hop aroma in
beer probably consists of more than 100 compounds,
and some of these are only present below their
threshold concentration. However, these compounds
may show influences on aroma or flavor in beer by the
effect of other coexisting compounds in beer.
Therefore, it is incomplete to estimate the key
components in hoppy aroma in beer just from
thresholds and GC-O results. Read more

USA, MN: August Schell Brewing Company presents new beers and brings back old favorites

The August Schell Brewing Co., the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the country, brewer of Schell’s and Grain Belt, has been busy brewing a cornucopia of great beers for the coming fall and winter seasons.
Chimney Sweep, a black lager, has returned after an exciting first year, reports Digital Journal. The beer was given its name as a tribute to the mysterious chimney sweeps of yesteryear who were considered a source of good luck. Chimney Sweep has a rich, roasty maltiness with notes of bittersweet chocolate and coffee. Chimney Sweep is available from October through February.
After a strong Oktoberfest season, Schell’s is set to release its winter seasonal, Snowstorm. Just like every Minnesota snowstorm is different, so is this year’s recipe. This year’s Snowstorm will be a smooth Belgian-style golden ale. Chamomile and coriander add soothing herbal notes to its floral maltiness and warm, rich spiciness. Schell’s Snowstorm is available from November through December.
Earlier this year, Schell’s created the latest Stag Series release: August’s Bock. This beer is a blond doppelbock, with a rich golden amber color, assertive hop bitterness and a robust malt character. Stag #8 is a limited release and will be available starting November.

USA, DE: Mispillion River Brewing plans to open in November
|
Mispillion River Brewery is almost ready to open its doors, and plans to welcome the public to its 5,000-square-foot facility, equipped with a full-service brewery and tasting room on November 15, reported Milford Beacon on October 17.
Co-owner Eric Williams of Milford dreamt up the idea a couple years ago after growing tired of working in the corporate world. His love for brewing beer and desire to run his own business blossomed into a business plan supported by his wife Megan, and four other co-owners, Tammy and Scott Perlot of Smyrna and Don and Marti Brooks of Milton.
“We don’t do this for the money, we do it because the business needs good people here and we’re definitely passionate about beer,” Williams said. “I think the people in Milford are excited and proud to have a brewery opening up in their town.”
When Mispillion Brewery opens next month, Williams expects to offer new customers eight styles of beer: IPA, double IPA, a brown ale, molasses imperial stout, lemon grass Saison, Scottish Gruit and pale wheat.

USA, NY: Busti’s Southern Tier Brewing Company expanding again
|
Southern Tier Brewing Company, Inc., in the Stoneman Industrial Park in the town of Busti, is again expanding their facilities. The company is erecting a 45,000 sq. ft. butler building for warehouse space for packaging materials that will also include office space, lab, and six loading docks. Their growth in current and projected sales prompted this expansion project, according to the Observer.
The new addition will bring a total of approximately 83,000 sq. ft. of new construction in the town of Busti, since they began their operations in 2003.
The County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency (CCIDA) Board of Director's approved assistance for the company with a PILOT/Tax Lease Agreement for this project. This will include sales and use tax incentives, along with property tax incentives.
"Success in the food and beverage industries comes from having outstanding products, and Southern Tier Brewing continues to have great success with their superior products. It is exciting for the CCIDA to have assisted in what they have accomplished, and we will stand ready to help as they move ahead," commented Bill Daly, Administrative Director/CEO of the CCIDA.

USA, WA: Stoup Brewing to open in Ballard
|
Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood welcomes its ninth brewery on October 23 with the addition of Stoup Brewing. Located less than a block from Bardahl Oil at 1108 NW 52nd St., Stoup is within easy walking range of several other breweries in the neighborhood, reported Myballard.com on October 21.
Founded by a chemist, a wine aficionado and a beer geek, Stoup blends the “art and science of beer.” Brad Benson (the chemist) and Lara Zahaba (she worked in the wine industry) are both Ballard residents, and Robyn Schumacher (the beer geek) is a biologist and a certified Cicerone to boot.
“As scientists, we hold the microorganisms and chemical processes that create beer in the highest esteem. As artists, we revel in a good pour,” the three founders explain on Stoup’s site.
Stoup is a 15-barrel brew house that features an “Indian Session Ale” along with an IPA, Porter and NW Red. They’re working on a Bavarian Hefeweizen and a German-style Pilsner, too.
Stoup may be the ninth Ballard brewery, but it won’t be the last of the beer boom — Bad Jimmy’s Brewery is coming soon to Leary Ave. near 8th Ave.

USA, CO: Elevation Beer expands beer production again
|
Elevation Beer has expanded its production plant with the addition of two new 60 bbl tanks and a grain silo, with plans to reach 4,000 barrels of production capacity in 2014, reported Drinks Business Review on October 21.
For this, the company expects to produce 2600 barrels in its first full year of operation, a 278% increase in the production compared to 2012.
The newly added tanks will enable the brewery to expand draft beers production and will produce 16.9oz four packs of its 8 Second Kölsch.
Elevation Beer head brewer and co-founder Christian Koch was quoted by beerpulse.com as saying that the new tanks will add another 23% capacity to the brewery, bringing them up to 315 barrels of fermentation capacity and allowing them to brew upwards of 4000 barrels in 2014.
"The addition of a grain silo will also take off almost 800 pounds of lifting per batch for our brewers, giving them a much needed break," Koch added.
"We have been running at full capacity ever since we completed our first expansion, and I am guessing we will add 2-4 more 60 bbl tanks in 2014."

USA, CA: Strike Brewing to build its own brewery facility
|
To meet a growing demand for its beers, San Jose, California-based Strike Brewing Co. announced it will build its own brick-and-mortar brewing facility, reports Brewbound.
Launched in December, 2011, the company had previously been contract brewing at Hermitage Brewing in San Jose.
“Our contract brewing partner was great to work with but we wanted more freedom to test experimental and seasonal beers,” said Jenny Lewis, the company CEO and co-founder.
Strike has already begun construction on a 6,000 sq. ft. warehouse space that will house its new 15-barrel brewhouse and four fermentation tanks. The company said it will have an initial capacity of 2,000 barrels with space for a bottling line, barrel-aging and a taproom. Lewis said she hopes the space will be functional in the first quarter of next year.
“We’ve earned some great local chain distribution and added more distributors that we’d like to provide a consistent supply of beer,” she said. “Once we are in our own space, we will be able to forecast our sales better.”
Strike recently launched 22 oz. packages in three Bay Area Costco outlets and 30 Safeway accounts, but Lewis said those numbers could grow with the added capacity.

|
On Saturday, November 2, Two Beers Brewing celebrates six exciting years in business. To mark the occasion, Two Beers Brewing will be hosting its biggest celebration yet with the unveiling of a brand new look for its growing brewery, including a new logo, new cans and new bottle labels for its entire lineup. In addition, two new beers will be released – a Sixth Anniversary IPL (a hoppy lager) and Overhang Bourbon Aged Imperial Porter, the final beer in Two Beers Brewing’s Alta Series, as reported by Brewbound on October 21.
“When I started Two Beers Brewing and developed our brand, I was brewing out of 170-square-feet in Fremont, producing only four kegs a week,” said Joel VandenBrink, founder and head brewer at Two Beers Brewing Company. “Six years later, you can find us in six states and four countries, with draft and package products in more than 1,000 accounts. USA, CO: Grist Brewing Company is the first craft brewery to open in Highlands Ranch
|
The first brews have been sampled and the grand opening is right around the corner for Highlands Ranch’s very first craft brewery.
Grist Brewing Company, located across Town Center Drive from Shea Stadium at 9150 Commerce Center Circle in Highlands Ranch, will open its doors to the public at noon, November 2, Our Colorado News reported on October 21.
The brewery, which will be open seven days a week, will have six beers on tap for the opening. They include the Staple India Pale Ale, Transition State Kolsch, Touch Line Brown, Niobrara Stout, Third Ring Belgian Strong Ale and Window Tour Hefeweizen.
“We are hitting all the notes with the opening,” said brewer Dustin Dahl. “We have everything from light to dark to strong, so there is a little something for everybody. We’ll be keeping it true to style with each of the brews but with our own little twist.”
In addition to a large taproom, patrons will have a view of beer being made as the brew house is located on the other side of a waist-high wall.

USA, MT: Bones Brewing Company dissolving November 4
|
Bones Brewing Company, 1425 Broadwater Ave., Billings, MT is closing November 4, and possibly even sooner, reported Billings Gazette on October 21.
The liquor store and casino at what is known as Doc and Eddy’s Plaza will remain open. Beer will continue being brewed by Yellowstone Valley Brewing Company, which is leasing space at the complex. But the music and comedy shows, hosted in the 19,000 square-foot venue, will end. The final day of operations is November 3, according to Tom Williams, operations manager of Doc and Eddy’s Plaza.
“It was a very difficult decision,” Williams said. “It was a decision that has been talked about for a few years. We were just losing too much money on it.”

USA, FL: Motorworks Brewing gains momentum for November opening
|
Motorworks Brewing is on track to debut with a taproom, beer garden and patio in Bradenton in late November.
A production area of about 24,000 square feet is slated to open in early 2014, following the installation of equipment, reports Tampa Bay Business Journal.
Bob Haa Jr. will be head brewer of the upcoming full-production brewery.
Motorworks is based in a former automotive dealership built in the 1920s, located at 1014 9th Street West, Bradenton, FL.
Co-founders Frank Tschida and Denise Tschida plan to host an opening celebration with live music around Thanksgiving weekend.

USA, MO: Heavy Riff Brewing, St. Louis releases first two beers
|
Heavy Riff Brewing, which opened in September at 6413 Clayton Road in Dogtown within St. Louis, introduced the first two of its own beers on draft on October 21, according to STL Today.
The rock & roll-themed craft brewer described the offerings on Facebook over this past weekend: Velvet Underbrown, an "American Brown Ale brewed with lactose and oats," and Super Session Wheat, a "highly hopped wheat beer featuring Galaxy, Mosaic, and Citra hops."
Throughout the year, Heavy Riff plans on brewing somewhere between 30 and 40 styles (from hoppy IPAs to Belgian sours) with 8 to 10 constantly on tap. A few guest taps will serve as a complement, including a dedicated light lager for those not yet fully converted to the craft-beer mania.

USA, IL: Chicago’s Goose Island Beer Co. releases three new brews
|
Available this winter season, the three newcomers by Goose Island Beer Co. include Bourbon County Brand Barleywine, which is aged in third-use Bourbon barrels; Backyard Rye Bourbon County Brand Stout, which is aged in Templeton rye whiskey barrels with a variety of fresh berries; and Proprietor’s Bourbon County Brand Stout, which is aged in Templeton barrels with toasted coconut and will be available exclusively in the Chicago market, reports Shanken News Daily.
Each of the brews will be offered in limited quantities, with Barleywine packaged in four-packs and Backyard Rye and Proprietor’s packaged in 22-ounce bombers.
The trio will be sold alongside limited quantities of the brewer’s original Bourbon County Brand Stout, as well as the returning Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout, first launched last year in collaboration with Intelligentsia Coffee.

USA, VA: Richmond’s Hardywood Park Craft Brewery expanding to Arlington County
|
The Richmond brewery, Hardywood Park Craft announced on October 21 that it will begin selling beer in Arlington County next month, according to Richmond Times Dispatch.
Co-founder Eric McKay said the brewery will offer the flagship Singel – a blonde, Belgian-style beer – on tap and in retail stores around Arlington. The brewery also will sell cans of Cream Ale and The Great Return, an India Pale Ale that the brewery released for the first time on October 19.
The brewery said it hopes to begin Northern Virginia distribution of the company's seasonal Reserve Series, which includes offerings like Gingerbread Stout, Farmhouse Pumpkin and Blackberry, when production capacity allows the move.
"We have ordered more tanks that should arrive in March, and that will increase our capacity by another 50 percent," McKay said. "That's when we can start expanding all over Northern Virginia on a broader scale.
Sales in the new market will be handled by Henrico County-based Brown Distributing, which has worked with Hardywood since McKay and co-founder Patrick Murtaugh opened the brewery in September 2011. The brewery has 25 employees.

USA, RI & CT: Foolproof to expand beer distribution to Connecticut
|
Foolproof Brewing Company accounted on October 21 that it will begin distributing in the state of Connecticut. The company’s beers, which will be available for purchase in cans and draft beginning October 28, are being distributed statewide by Northeast Beverage Corporation, Orange, CT as reported by Brewbound.
“We are thrilled to expand our distributions footprint into our neighboring state of Connecticut,” said Foolproof’s president and founder Nick Garrison. “This is a big step toward growing Foolproof into a regional beer brand, and we hope this announcement will excite craft beer lovers across Connecticut and all of New England.”
“We are enormously proud of our collaborative partnership with Nick and his Foolproof team in Rhode Island,” said Ken Mancini, president of Rhode Island Distributing Company. “We are equally excited about the opportunity for Foolproof’s brands in the Connecticut market.”
The brewery, which began selling its beers in Rhode Island in January 2013, doubled its brewing production capacity in April and expanded distribution into Massachusetts in May. Connecticut is now the third state to carry the fledgling brewery’s beers.

Canada & EU: The Malting Industry Association of Canada wlcomes new agreement on barley and malt trade with the EU

The Malting Industry Association of Canada (MIAC) supports the agreement in principle of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) which was announced on October 18 by Prime Minister Harper in Brussels.
The CETA eliminates tariffs on malt immediately and the phased elimination of tariffs for barley. It will provide the ability to consider potential niche geographic market opportunities in an open and transparent market environment.
"Eliminating tariffs and liberalizing trade globally for malt is critically important for our industry, so any agreement that continues to move forward the Government of Canada's trade negotiation agenda globally is good news," says MIAC president Phil de Kemp.
This agreement once ratified has the potential to increase domestic barley grain usage due to the expected market opportunities for both beef and pork into the E.U. "The potential for increased domestic barley consumption is strongly supported by our malt industry members," says de Kemp. "It will provide the ability for us to continue to work closely with our barley producers to maximize their market sales of malting barley for malt production while at the same time providing additional growth opportunities for barley sales to the animal sector".

USA: MillerCoors cuts 360 positions due to sales drop
|
MillerCoors is eliminating 360 jobs, which includes laying off 200 salaried employees, in response to the tough sales conditions facing the company and beer industry, reported Ad Age on October 21.
"To realize our ambition, we must have the financial flexibility required to seize opportunities and address challenges head-on," CEO Tom Long and Ed McBrien, president of sales and distributor operations, said in a memo to distributors. "Given our current fixed-cost base, we can't meet these long-term investment requirements. Simply put, our fixed-cost base is too high and our organizational structure is too complex."
In a statement, the brewer confirmed that "approximately 200 salaried employees will be leaving the organization and another 160 open salaried positions will be eliminated." The Chicago-based brewer employs about 8,800 people nationally. The cuts will be spread across "all functions of the company," including sales and marketing, a spokesman said. The cuts are meant to "help the company meet long-term investment requirements in its brands and breweries while at the same time achieve its operating margin and profitability goals."
The distributor memo cited a "period of rapid and disruptive change" in the U.S. beer industry, including "consumer fragmentation, continued high unemployment and increased competition from wine and spirits."

Greece & USA: Greece’s Santorini Brewing to distribute beer in the U.S.

Santorini Brewing CO opened its doors in 2011 on the road to a quaint beachside town in Greece and created the Donkey beers. The brewery has an annual production capacity of 75,000 liters.
There are three styles of beer currently in production – Yellow, Red & Crazy Donkey. Only Crazy Donkey IPA is available for export, it is said to be the first Greece-brewed IPA in the U.S. market.
In late October 2013, Santorini Brewing Company has exported its first batch of Crazy Donkey IPA into the US through NY-based Athenee Importers, the country’s oldest family owned importer of premium alcoholic beverages from Greece into the US, reports Brewbound.
Crazy Donkey is Greece’s first IPA and is produced with five kinds of hops. The beer has 6.5% ABV and an IBU of 50. Crazy Donkey is sold in 750 ml glass bottles and retails for approximately $35-$40 a bottle. Crazy Donkey will be available in the United States in small quantities (less than 100 cases per shipment) throughout the winter months. Due to high local demand, the brewery will not export beer during the tourist season.

Brazil: 2012 beer sales volume suffers, Ambev’s market share declines to 63%

In 2012, volume sales within the Brazilian beer industry suffered strongly from unit price increases by manufacturers. This marked an attempt to dilute the tax increase scheduled for late 2012, extended to the first semester of 2013, through negotiation with the government, Companies and Markets reported on October 15.
Thus beer manufacturers cooperated in the "Greater Brazil Plan", in which companies have to pledge investment in new jobs and production, to stimulate beer sales.

UK: Demand for barley set to grow as distilleries expand

Scotch whisky is enjoyed in more than 200 countries across the world, with distilleries buying more than £200 mln worth of cereals to produce the sprit, Farmers Weekly reported on October 19.
And without farmers growing barley and wheat - blended spirits are made with a mix of the two, while single malt is made with 100% barley - the industry would be without its key ingredients.
"Farmers are critical to the success of Scotch whisky," says Julie Hesketh-Laird, director of operational and technical affairs at the Scotch Whisky Association.
"Cereals are the biggest raw material and one of the major costs to the industry. It's critical that we get the volume and quality we require - farmers are at the heart of that."
As distilleries expand - about 80-90 mln litres of capacity has gone online in the past few years and 20-30 mln litres more are planned - the demand for good-quality cereals is set to grow, she adds.
"I guess key to this is to make sure we have enough of the quality cereal. Distillers are looking for distill yield and farmers are looking for agronomic yield - volumes are going to be crucial," explains Ms Hesketh-Laird.

When Sue Clark named the near-black Fawcett's Folly imperial stout the winner of SABMiller's 2013 employee brew-off contest last week, it was not just because she likes dark beer.
The head of the brewer's European business praised its "360-degree marketing," which appealed to both men and women and is the type of advertising she is betting on to help stem declines in beer demand, reported Reuters on October 21.
Appealing to more women is not easy for big beer, as Molson Coors recently learned with the failure of its female-friendly Animee, which it pulled after 15 months. But Clark says more inclusive advertising, a broader range of beer styles and improving conditions at bars will help.
In the United States, beer accounts for 42 percent of alcohol consumed, Clark said, down from a high of 72 percent a decade ago, before it lost ground to wine and spirits. Trends in Britain and Western Europe are similar, she said, in her first extensive interview since becoming managing director last year.

Haiti: Heineken plans to invest $100 mln in its Haiti brewery in 2014

Stefan Orlowski, the President of Heineken Americas visited Haiti on October 21 where he met with Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe as part of a review of an expected corporate investment of 100 million dollars the company hopes to make in its Haiti subsidiary over the next year, reports Sentinel.ht.
Briefing the press after the meeting, the head of the Haitian government recalled Heineken's majority purchase of the Haitian company, Brasserie National d'Haiti:
"...as you know, Heineken bought the Brasserie Nationale d'Haiti and will invest in the upcoming year more than $100 million. Its president came so that we can meet and do a review of their investments."
