ABSTRACT
The dream of all hop aroma researchers is to identify all
sensory relevant components that cause the different
unique hop aromas in beer. Maybe Inui et al have come
pretty close to answering at least some important
related questions. Brewing five single variety trial beers
(with Hallertauer Mittelfrueh, Hallertauer Tradition, Saaz,
Perle, Cascade) they looked into the correlation of six
specified sensory aroma characteristics in beer with
analytical results of GCxGC/TOF-MS measurements.
The relevant components to six generic hop aroma
characteristics were verified by multivariate analysis of
organoleptic evaluation together with component
analysis results. Those components with significant
differences among five hopped beers were selected.
These initially 297 could further be narrowed down to
67 compounds. Their conclusion is that hop aroma in
beer probably consists of more than 100 compounds,
and some of these are only present below their
threshold concentration. However, these compounds
may show influences on aroma or flavor in beer by the
effect of other coexisting compounds in beer.
Therefore, it is incomplete to estimate the key
components in hoppy aroma in beer just from
thresholds and GC-O results. Read more

USA, CO & NC: New Belgium Brewing resumes its second brewery construction in Asheville
|
New Belgium Brewing Company is one step closer to opening its second brewing facility on the East Coast according to Brewbound.
The company announced on October 22 it would resume site work on its new Asheville, N.C. brewery, in preparation for a groundbreaking in the spring of next year. The project is still expected to be completed in late 2015.
The new brewery is expected to produce 500,000 barrels a year. In 2012, New Belgium’s flagship brewery in Fort Collins, CO produced around 764,000 barrels.
Coinciding with the construction of the new brewery will be the creation of a new distribution center. New Belgium expects to bring on 50 new hires before the launch of the facility and create 140 new jobs by the time both the brewery and distribution site are up and running.
This update comes just six months after New Belgium announced that construction of the new brewery would be delayed, however, the 2015 completion date has remained unchanged.

USA, NY: Ruckus Brewing gets until December to complete the deal on Neuweiler Brewery
|
Ruckus Brewing is looking at options to complete $1.7 million deal on Allentown's former brewery, reports Allentown Morning Call.
Manhattan-based Ruckus Brewing, the company that hopes to resurrect beer production at Allentown's long-dormant Neuweiler Brewery has until December 15 to come up with the money to buy the property, according to Allentown Morning Call.
The Allentown Commercial Industrial Development Authority voted 5-0 to grant Ruckus 45 additional days to raise the $1.7 million it has agreed to pay for the 4.6-acre property. It is Ruckus' second extension.
Joined by consultant Mike Fleck, who also manages Mayor Ed Pawlowski's mayoral and gubernatorial campaigns, Ruckus' CEO Josh Wood said the company needs more time to put together its financing, including navigating the complex process required to tap tax dollars from the city's Neighborhood Improvement Zone.
"We have been working hard, we will continue to work hard," Wood said. "We are in it to win it."
Ruckus' ambitious $30 million Neuweiler project, called Brewers Hill, would take the long-vacant brick building and convert it to a working brewery that would crank out Ruckus' line of microbrews in addition to contract brewing for other brewers. It would also include office space, a business incubator and a brew pub.

Canada, BC: Mt. Begbie Brewing in Revelstoke asks for tax break to build new $2 million brewery
|
Although it’s not budget time yet, Revelstoke City Council faced a tough taxation question at their October 22 meeting, when Mt. Begbie Brewing Co. president Bart Larson’s tax appeal letter was on the agenda, reports Revelstoke Times Review.
Larson wanted a tax concession of some kind in order to build a new brewery, and noted that Salmon Arm was an option, where taxes are significantly lower.
It’s no big secret the successful, locally-owned brewery is hunting for a new home. They’re bursting at the seams, and rent significant storage off-site. The Times Review has spoken with the brewery ownership in the past months about rumoured locations, but nothing was final enough to report on. A lot near the Revelstoke Railway Museum is one proposed location.
In his letter to council, Larson said the existing taxation levels will make building a new, 15,000-square-foot facility cost-prohibitive, estimating monthly taxes on a $1.5–$2 million light-industrial facility to be about $7,500.
“I believe, in our case, these taxes will prevent us from going forward with this project,” Larson writes.
Larson said the brewery employs just over 10 full-time employees, saying that number could “easily” double if their current 20 per cent annual growth rate continues. “More permanent, full-time residents

USA, OR : Ecliptic Brewing opens in Portland
|
Ecliptic Brewing opened one day ahead of schedule on October 21 off North Mississippi Avenue in Portland, OR. According to Oregonlive, legendary brewer John Harris is behind the operation.
Harris has four beers on tap at the moment --- Arcturus IPA, Procyon Pale Ale, 1/2 Mile Pale Ale (a collaboration with Widmer) and Ticwittic sour wit, a collaboration with Gigantic. He's got a porter in the fermenter, and lots of plans for special beers including fruit beers.
Harris wants Ecliptic to be one of the 100 best restaurants in town. "My beer will bring people here," he says, "The food will bring them back. Great food and great beer elevates both to new levels." Harris plans a menu that changes with the season and availability of ingredients.

USA, FL: MIA Brewing Company begins construction in Doral
|
MIA Brewing Company, based in Doral, recently received approval from the federal government, according to the Miami New Times blog.
MIA Brewing has a brand new home - a building that once housed office space for an electrical contractor.
"We're shooting to complete construction by December," says owner Eddie Leon. "We hope to be selling beer in January."
MIA's equipment includes a 20-barrel, three vessel system, which also has three 40-barrel fermenters. For the first year, Leon's total production will reach about 2,000 barrels. He hopes to double this amount every year.
Leon intends to open his taproom by January. However, the brewery still needs a malt beverage manufacturer's permit from Florida. This is the next step for Leon, who also needs to apply for approval of beer labels.
Most Wanted Beverages, a new beer distribution company co-founded by Leon, will hold the exclusive rights to distribute MIA's brews in Miami-Dade. Leon has plans to use other distributors for the rest of the state.
Most Wanted's mission is to broaden the market for local breweries in Miami and also throughout all of Florida. Leon said the distribution company is considering expansion to Latin America, as well.

USA, MI, KS & NE: Founders Brewing Company expands its distribution territory
|
Rapidly growing Founders Brewing Co. announced on October 24 that it is expanding its distribution territory to include Kansas and Nebraska, reports Brewbound.
The Michigan-based craft brewery, ranked as the 29th largest in the country by trade group the Brewers Association, has inked distribution agreements with three wholesalers: Central States Beverage will represent the brand in Kansas City, KS; Premier-Midwest Beverage will represent Founders in Omaha, NE and K&Z Distributing will represent the brewery in Lincoln, NE.
Founders will officially launch its year-round beers such as All Day IPA and Dirty Bastard as well as seasonal offerings like Breakfast Stout in these three metro areas at the beginning of December.
Founders Brewing is the third major craft brand to enter these markets in the last 15 months. Deschutes Brewery launched in the Kansas in July of last year and Nebraska earlier this month. Stone Brewing entered also entered both markets in the last three months.

USA, FL: Grayton Beer launches brewery in South Walton
|
Grayton Beer Company, established in 2011, is set to begin brewing its own brews in South Walton, reports Walton Sun.
Following almost 11 months of construction, five trucks delivered nine stainless-steel fermentation tanks to the brewery site on October 21. The vats were moved by a crane and lifted into place by October 22. And by November, the county's first locally-brewed beer will be flowing from the state-of-the art brewing equipment.
The largest of the nine vats holds 22,000 pints of brew, resulting in 8,000 barrels of beer per year, and enough capacity to brew the equivalent of 150,000 bottles of beer at a time. In addition to the 18-foot fermentation tanks, additional vessels will arrive to store and manage the hot and cold water needed to produce the beer.
"We have been looking forward to this day for some time now," said Jamey Price, the company's founder. "We are starting to see our dream of an independent craft brewery emerging in South Walton."
The company's two beers that were introduced in 2011 have been previously produced in central Florida.
"We always had the intention of working here and wanted to base Grayton Beer here. It just took 12 months longer than anticipated," said Price.

USA, OH: Phoenix Brewing Company plans to open this winter in Mansfield
|
Phoenix Brewing hopes to open production brewery and tasting room this winter in the Schroer & Son building on North Diamond Street in Mansfield, according to Akron Beacon Journal. The partial federal shutdown helped push back the opening.
Phoenix Brewing will launch with a five-barrel brewing system from GW Kent. The system will be located in the basement just like those at Millersburg Brewing in Millersburg and Barley’s Brewing in Columbus. Unlike those operations, which have windows to look down into the brewhouse, visitors won’t be able to see the brewing equipment.
The beer will be available on draft only, and Phoenix plans to self-distribute at first.
The partners chose downtown Mansfield for a reason. Not only was the building’s backstory attractive, but downtown also is been booming with art galleries, coffee shops, a sports bar and martini bar, they said.
Phoenix will launch with four beers and eventually up that to six. At first, there likely will be an oatmeal stout, robust porter, English ESB and West Coast-style India pale ale.
The brewery won’t include a kitchen, but people will be welcome to bring in food, such as pizza, and they will host food trucks as many other brewing operations successfully do in Ohio.

USA, LA: Red River Brewing Company sells first beer in Sheveport
|
Red River Brewing Company, one of two craft breweries in northwest Louisiana, sold its flagship beer for the first time on October 24 at Rotolo’s Pizzeria in Shreveport, reports Shreveport Times.
After receiving their state license earlier this month, Red River founders Jared Beville, Beau Raines and Robert McGuire have been busy brewing for the launch of their flagship beer Louisiana Hay Ryed. The American wheat ale is now available on tap at Rotolo’s Pizzeria, 1409 E. 70th St.
John-Scott Thompson is a fan of craft beer, but after moving to Shreveport a few years ago was disappointed in the lack of craft beer. A home-brewer, he often orders his preferred beers online but was pleased with Red River’s Louisiana Hay Ryed.
“It’s light with a little bit of spice, and it’s not too strong,” Thompson said. “Some craft beers are brewed at like 8 and 9 percent, and when you take a sip, the alcohol just hits you and this doesn’t do that. A lot of craft brews that I find brew a higher alcohol content beer, so this is a good balance.”
McGuire said it was humbling to watch people drink his product.

USA, MN: Summit Brewing Company expands again
|
Summit Brewing Company, fresh off a nearly $7 million expansion of its St. Paul brewery, is growing yet again—and it’s gearing up to begin selling some of its beer in aluminum cans, according to Twin Cities Business Magazine.
Summit was founded in 1986 and is Minnesota’s second-largest brewery based on barrels produced in the state. Late last year, it began an expansion that added 7,632 square feet of cellar space and doubled annual production capacity to 240,000 barrels at its St. Paul facility. That project was completed last month.
Apparently thirsty for even more growth, Summit has now paid $2.3 million for a building located behind its brewery, according to real estate records, which indicate that Summit purchased the facility from Twin City Tile & Marble Company.
The recently acquired building is roughly 40,000 square feet and sits on 3.5 acres. Summit plans to move its sales, marketing, and administrative staff into the space, which will also house warehousing operations, according to Summit spokesperson Carey Matthews.
The company is renovating the space and hopes to have its offices and warehousing up and running in January.

USA, CO: Denver Beer Co. unveils production brewery and packaging facility in north Denver
|
Denver Beer Co. announced plans on October 23 to open a production brewery and packaging facility in industrial north Denver that will allow the two-year-old brewery to sell more Graham Cracker Porter to the masses while rededicating its existing Platte Street location to the experimentation it was founded on, according to Denver Post.
The expansion means Denver Beer Co. beer in cans and 22-ounce bottles by early next summer, joining an ever-growing number of locally brewed beers on Denver-area liquor store shelves.
The existing brewery and tap room on Platte Street, which has one of the state’s best patios and has been packing them in since opening in 2011, is not going anywhere.
Denver Beer Co. is under contract to purchase a 48,000-square-foot warehouse on three acres at 4455 Jason Street in the Sunnyside neighborhood, said co-owner Patrick Crawford. The building has 32-foot ceilings – ideal for a brewery – and used to house a Kraft food warehouse, he said.
Crawford said the closing date on the purchase is not for another couple of years, so until then Denver Beer Co. will rent 11,000 square feet of space there. The existing tenants will remain, for now, but once Denver Beer Co. owns the property

Full Sail Brewing will release a new beer in their Brewer’s Share Experimental line up: “Duffy’s Counterpunch,” an Imperial Cascadian Dark Ale crafted by Marketing Coordinator Stephanie Duffy, Brewbound reported on October 23. This ICDA is rich and complex, with woodsy evergreen aromas complemented by notes of coffee and dark chocolate from roasted malts.
“My beer defies the traditional expectations of a “girl’s beer.” Like many women, I love my beer and I appreciate a broad cross-section of craft brews. I’m lucky to live and work in a beautiful place like Oregon, where craft beers are such a vital part of our culture. USA, VT: Prohibition Pig restaurant plans to brew its own beers
|
Soon the two-story brick building at 23 South Main Street in Waterbury, VT will again have house-brewed beers flowing from its taps, reports Seven Days.
Earlier this fall, Prohibition Pig owner Chad Rich purchased the one-barrel brewing system formerly used by Sean Lawson of Lawson’s Finest Liquids, and soon Pro Pig brewer Nate Johnson will put it to use for house brews. That is, once the company’s licenses are approved, a process that hit a speed bump because of the government shutdown.
Slowdown notwithstanding, a few lucky drinkers have already gotten to taste Johnson’s first effort, Prohibition Pig Pale Ale. Johnson traveled to Morrisville’s Rock Art Brewery with his own yeast, hops and grain to produce the first 30-keg batch of that beer — which sold out quickly. “We want to have a staple pale ale and then surround it with other beers,” Rich says. “Our goal is not to be a brewpub, but have five or six of our own brews on tap along with all of the other beers we usually serve.”

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) — the federal agency that approves new beer labels and brewing companies – is once again operational following a 16-day government shutdown that ended October 17, reports Brewbound.

The branch officially resumed its operations last Thursday, October 17.
The TTB said it is currently reviewing brewing applications and label submissions that were automatically rejected during the shutdown. It will also add 21 days to the status date for all applications that were in a “needs correction” status prior to the shutdown.

A top U.S. Agriculture Department official said key monthly U.S. crop reports will continue to be released during CME Group Inc trading hours, despite complaints from the grain industry that high-speed traders have access to the data before it becomes available on public websites, Reuters reported on October 22.
"This business of the markets being open during the release of the reports is not going away and will stay with us for a while," Gerald Bange, chairman of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's World Agricultural Outlook Board, told a group of agricultural economists and traders at a meeting in Chicago.
Since last year, when the USDA began releasing its key monthly crop reports while the CME grain markets were open, hedgers have complained bitterly that high-speed traders armed with algorithms and super-fast data feeds have distorted the price discovery function of the markets. Previously, the reports were released when the markets were closed.
On the sidelines of the industry meeting between USDA government officials and market analysts, Bange told Reuters that USDA made the change at the request of CME more than a year ago.

The new leaders of the Idaho Barley Commission say the future looks bright for malting barley, with 2014 contracts coming in higher than they expected.
Idaho Barley Commission leaders say they’ve been pleasantly surprised by 2014 malting barley contract prices that are relatively strong compared with wheat, Capital Press reported on October 23.
Though malting barley contract prices have been below last year’s levels, new IBC Chairman Pat Purdy, a Blaine County farmer and rancher, said he’s been pleased, nonetheless, to see them hovering slightly above $13 per hundredweight.
“From our point of view, we’re a lot more motivated to plant barley again this year than to try wheat again. I think it’s a very favorable (barley) price,” Purdy said. “I do expect we should see some acres move into barley.”
Barley prices typically run $1.50 to $2 per bushel below wheat. Lately, the gap has narrowed to about 75 cents per bushel, Purdy explained. Malting barley has significant advantages over wheat, requiring less nitrogen to raise and having contracts with an act of God clause, which Purdy explained protects growers who sustain weather-related crop losses from penalization for their inability to supply the full contract amount.

The head of Heineken Ireland has called on the Government to reverse the 18 per cent increase in excise on beer, saying it will be damaging for publicans, exports, tourism and jobs, The Irish Times reported on October 25.
Maggie Timoney criticised the Government’s decision to levy a second consecutive year of excise increases on alcohol, saying the average price of an alcoholic drink in Ireland is now among the most expensive in Europe.
While the lower VAT rate will have a positive impact on publicans, she said the excise increase on alcohol prices could lead to further pub closures and job losses.
Roughly 1,000 pubs have closed in the past five years, with per capita consumption down one-third since 2000, she said.
“The excise is so egregious we need to look for a reversal of that 18 per cent excise. We need to start rebuilding the economy and help publicans,” she said.
She said the excise duty has increased by nearly 40 per cent in the last two years, which would affect pubs, tourism and exports.

Danish brewer Carlsberg said on October 25 its majority stakeholder, the Carlsberg Foundation, aims to remove a rule in its charter which says that the foundation is obliged to own at least 25 percent of the company.
The company also said its Supervisory Board intends to propose at the next annual shareholders' meeting that dividend payouts should equal at least 25 percent of adjusted net profit.
"If such a payout ratio had been applied for 2012, the dividend paid would have been more than 50 percent higher," the company said.

World: Feed barley exports from the EU increase this year

Feed barley export sales for this year’s crop were concluded at the beginning of the calendar year, mostly for optional origins.
As Australia and Argentina were sold out for old crop barley, and Black Sea sellers started slowly into the new campaign, EU barley gained a large share of the early barley shipments to North Africa and the Middle East. Malting barley shipments of 150,000 tons to Russia, South America and China completed a program of 3.4 mln tons in less than three months of the grain year, industry analysts reported at the beginning of October.
More than 2 mln tons were shipped from France and Germany, but the U.K., Baltic and Black Sea ports, even Spain participated in the business, too. Barley shipments as of the beginning of October were almost 1.6 mln tons ahead of last year, just like wheat with 6.2 mln vs. 3.3 mln tons a year ago.

The Czech Republic: Pilsner Urquell raises prices of its bottled and canned beer

The leading Czech beer producer, Pilsner Urquell, has announced a slight increase in the prices of its bottled and canned beer on the domestic market. The Plzeň-based group says it will not raise the price of its world-famous brew sold in kegs and tanks, ostensibly to attract more people to pubs and restaurants. But experts say the move will do little to reverse the trend which has seen more and more Czechs having a beer at home rather than out on the town, Radio.cz reported on October 24.
Every autumn, Pilsner Urquell raises the prices of its beer to match the inflation and higher ingredient costs. This year, however, the increase will only apply to its bottled and canned beer, and will be very moderate – on November 1, the prices of bottled Urquell, Gambrinus, Radegast and Velkopopovický Kozel will rise by 0.7 percent. UK: Scottish brewer releases the world’s strongest beer at 67.5%

Scottish brewer Brewmeister has released the world’s strongest beer named Snake Venom at a whopping 67.5%. The new product beats their own record beer Armageddon at 65%, which was released last year, Brewbound reported on October 24.
The beer contains special ingredients to achieve such a high volume of alcohol including smoked peat malt and two types of yeast: beer yeast and champagne yeast.
Unlike normal beers, Snake Venom is freeze distilled, a process whereby the fermented beer is frozen and ice is removed to increase the concentration of beer.
Lewis Shand of Brewmeister said, “Unlike Armageddon, Snake Venom is not designed to mask the taste of the alcohol. The alcohol is very strong but the beer still tastes like a beer rather than a spirit. It’s hoppy, malty and very pleasant”.
Snake Venom is so strong that Brewmeister has put a warning label on the neck of the bottle warning drinkers to beware.
Aberdeen University in collaboration with Brewmeister will be testing the beer to confirm the brewery results.
The beer is currently sold online for £50.
