Serbian researchers looked into the comparison
of electrochemical versus spectrophotometric
assessment of antioxidant activity of hop components. In conclusion, in contrast to the most commonly applied
spectrophotometric antioxidant assays (DPPH, radical
scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, FRAP,
ferric reducing antioxidant power and ABTS, scavenging
of 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic
acid) the recently developed DC (direct current)
polarographic assay recognizes humulone as a superior
antioxidant in comparison with various hop phenolics.
This is an additional evidence on bitter acids efficiency
as antioxidants, indicated in recent literature, and
suggests that their contribution to total antioxidant
activity of complex hop samples should not be
neglected. Hop H2O2 scavenging activity positively
correlated with the content of humulone and total
resins, and negatively with hop storage index. So the DC
polarographic assay might be a good addition for the
routine analyses in the brewing industry!

Canada: Change in law is needed to allow Canadians to take beer and spirits across provincial borders

Every day thousands of Canadians buy beer and spirits in one province and consume them in another. According to the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act, a Prohibition-era statute, they are all breaking the law, Economist reports.
The chances of being caught are negligible. There are no checkpoints between provinces. Indeed, you can pass from one to another without knowing it. Federal prisons are not exactly bursting with offenders. Dan Albas, an MP from British Columbia who managed to get wine removed from the act last year, said at the time it had never been enforced. Nevertheless, it is the law of the land.
Perhaps not for much longer. Buried in the myriad pledges the Conservative government led by Stephen Harper made in its speech from the throne on October 16 was a promise to amend the Act once again to allow Canadians to take beer and spirits for their own use across provincial borders.

UK: Heineken confident of spirit beer category growth
|
Heineken has announced that it is set to build on its support for tequila flavoured premium lager Desperados next year with a multi-million pound marketing campaign, The Drum reported on November 5.
The announcement of the £6 mln campaign, which will look to further awareness and encourage trial of the drink amongst 18-25 year olds, comes shortly after Heineken appointed Work Club to handle the global digital brief for the brand.
Most likely, agencies have not yet been appointed to handle the campaign.
Martin Porter, sales director off-trade at Heineken, said: “We have seen an explosion of new fruit flavours within the Cider category and the emergence of the Speers (spirits and beers) segment within beer and lager, responds to consumer demand for new and exciting beer drinking experiences.
“The meteoric growth of Desperados has been integral to the health and development of the Speers category and the brand continues to drive growth and rising value sales. The Philippines: San Miguel Corp looking to list San Miguel Brewery on Manila’s stock exchange
|
Philippine conglomerate San Miguel Corp is looking to list San Miguel Brewery Inc as well as its infrastructure, power and banking units on Manila's stock exchange within the next six months, its president Ramon Ang was quoted as saying by Philippine Daily Inquirer on November 6.
San Miguel Brewery voluntarily delisted from the exchange early this year along with San Miguel Properties Inc for failure to comply with the 10 percent minimum public float requirement.

Belgium: Belgian Brewers to launch domestic beer advertising campaign
|
Beer aficionados worldwide know that Belgium makes some of the very best, from fruity red Trappist brews to the famous Hoegaarden wheat beer. At home in Belgium, though, beer is an increasingly tough sell, Bloomberg reported on November 1.
Alarmed by a 17 percent drop in domestic consumption over the past decade—even as revenue from beer exports more than doubled—Belgian brewers are set to launch an advertising campaign urging their countrymen to drink local beers. “You can’t be the king of export and have a bad internal market,” says Sven Gatz, director of the Belgian Brewers trade association.
Details of the ad campaign, which will be launched in the next few weeks, haven’t been announced yet. But Gatz said the goal is “to position beer as part of the quality of life, as an element of Belgian pride.”
Belgium’s situation mirrors declining consumption in traditional beer-drinking countries including Germany and the Czech Republic. While wine consumption in Belgium has risen slightly in recent years, most beer drinkers aren’t switching to other alcoholic beverages, Gatz says. They’re simply drinking less alcohol, and more mineral water, coffee, and soft drinks.

Belgium: AB InBev announces new beer price hike
|
AB InBev has announced a new price hike planned for February 1, 2014, Le Soir reported on November 5.
Even if the increase is only 1.5 eurocents per 25 cl glass, it may lead to a further beer budget tightening among the population. In fact, this is already the fourth beer price increase over the last four years.
Beer consumption in cafes is already 4.5% lower than last year, it is reported.
AB InBev’s leading brands in Belgium are Jupiler, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden and Leffe. Its main competitor, Alken-Maes, has not made any decision on price adjustment yet.

Japan: Growing craft beer scene in Japan
|
There are four major beer brands in Japan. All four taste pretty much the same though. Each of the Japanese most popular beers are European-style lagers, which isn't too surprising when you learn that all four breweries were founded in the late 19th century with the help of German brewmasters, Mercurynews.com reports.
In 1908, Japanese lawmakers set the minimum amount a brewery must produce to qualify for a license at 18,000 hectoliters, or slightly more than 15,000 barrels, a move that kept smaller breweries from being a viable part of Japan's brewing industry. In the United States, a microbrewery is defined as one producing less than 15,000 barrels a year. Japan raised that benchmark even higher -- to 20,000 -- in 1959.
Everything changed in 1994, when the Japanese licensing standard was finally lowered to 600 hectoliters or roughly seven barrels, allowing smaller breweries to compete for the first time. Today, there are about 270 breweries in Japan, many making very flavorful and distinctive beers.

New Zealand: Craft beer on the rise in New Zealand
|
New Zealand is in the midst of a global beer brewing revolution, with more and more people looking to craft beers to quench their thirst, according to Tvnz.co.nz.
Invercargill brewer Steve Nally says he has increased production 150% in the past five years.
"I think people just want a change," Nally said.
"It's a cyclical thing, big brewers have commanded a lot of the market for a lot of time."
International beer expert Mirella Amato, who has been in New Zealand this week, says the secret to Kiwi craft beer brewing success is the local ingredients.
"The hops that are grown here, which are quite distinct, and the fact that in New Zealand you're brewing all kinds of different styles using New Zealand hops and how it transforms those styles," she said.
And as the craft beer industry takes off, it's up to people's taste buds to keep up.
Amato has been encouraging and teaching Kiwis to explore, identify and describe the flavours of local brews. She says the balance of flavours in a beer can make or break it.

India: Carlsberg India launches two variants of Kronenbourg beer

Carlsberg India, which is fast expanding its presence in the Indian beer market, is further beefing up its product portfolio.
The company has announced the launch of Kronenbourg - its signature French super premium beer, Business Standard reported on November 5.
Inspired by the heydays of the Renaissance with a 350-year French brewing heritage, Kronenbourg is among the best-selling super premium beer in France and is sold in over 70 countries. Kronenbourg has been launched in the Indian market in two variants, Kronenbourg Blanc and K1664.
With this addition, Carlsberg India now has brand portfolio comprising of Carlsberg Green, Carlsberg Elephant, Tuborg Green, Tuborg Strong, Tuborg Booster Strong, Kronenbourg Blanc, Kronenbourg 1664 and Palone 8.Within six years of operation, Carlsberg India has witnessed significant growth and acceptance amongst Indian consumers. "Last year's growth of 40 per cent has been very encouraging in this short journey. Today, Carlsberg India is the third-largest brewer in India. Australia & USA: Coca-Cola Amatil signs “long-term exclusive” distribution agreement with Boston Beer
|
Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) said on November 4 it has signed a “long-term exclusive” agreement with The Boston Beer Co to distribute its Samuel Adams brand in Australia.
Group Managing Director, Terry Davis said, “We are pleased to announce that we have entered into a long-term exclusive agreement to distribute America’s largest selling craft beer, Samuel Adams, into Australia from mid-December. The Boston Beer Company is America’s leading brewer of handcrafted, full-flavoured beers and has won more awards in the last five years than any other brewery in the world.
“With just over a month left until CCA re-enters the beer and cider market in Australia, we are ready to hit the ground running with a great portfolio of beer and cider brands. Our line-up will include the Molson Coors premium beers including Blue Moon and Coors and a full range of Rekorderlig ciders in both bottled and draught from January 2014.”

New Zealand: Moa shares drop after NZ$6 million loss forecast announcement
|
Moa boss Geoff Ross says the up to NZ$6 million full-year loss forecast by the craft beer brewer reflects the "triple hit" the company received from a sales shortfall in New Zealand and its subsequent move to a new distribution model in this country, The New Zealand Herald reported on November 5.
"You get the lack of volume that triggered the distribution change in the first place, the [sales] lull that you undergo before your new distribution model kicks in and the buy-back of any stock that the [former] distributor has had," Ross said.
"We could have chosen not to make a change ... but we thought that, overall, it was better to bite the bullet and move to the model we now have."
Auckland-based Moa, which brews its beer in Blenheim and listed on the NZX last November, on November 4 confirmed its annual sales volumes for the 12 months to the end of March 2014 would be 136,000 cases, 30 per cent less than the 195,000-case target in its initial public offer prospectus.
The drop was largely due to sales shortfall in New Zealand, which the company has blamed on its former distributor.

South Africa: SABMiller South African strike finishes, output not much affected
|
Global brewer SABMiller reached a wage deal with more than 2,000 workers in South Africa on Tuesday, November 5 ending a five-week strike that had little impact on beer production, Reuters reports.
SABMiller, which is also listed in Johannesburg, said it had agreed to raise wages by 7 percent, plus performance-related pay, back-dated to July 1.
"I was proud of the resilience of the majority of our employees during this difficult period who worked together to ensure the impact on our operations was minimised," said Mauricio Leyva, head of the brewer's domestic unit.
Workers led by the Food and Allied Workers Union were initially demanding a 9.5 percent wage hike and for the company to do away with performance-related pay.
The pay settlement, which raises the average monthly pay to just over 18,000 rand (£1,120), is above an inflation rate of about 6 percent and reflects similar accords across Africa's biggest economy.

Canada: Lethbridge barley prices may see further lows depending on price movements in other markets
|
Lethbridge barley saw a slight bump in prices the last few weeks, but Jim Beusekom, grain broker at Marketplace Commodities in Lethbridge, said prices could see further lows depending on the price movement of other feed markets, Alberta Farm Express reported on November 5.
"Through the second half of October, we've seen the market rally just slightly in Lethbridge," he said. "Prices moved upwards about C$5 a tonne. That's our grand rally, or about as close as we can get to a rally this year."
Beusekom said the boost was due to growers holding back on selling after they finished harvest activities.
"Following harvest, it's pretty normal that farmers like to hold back," he said. "Actually, I wouldn't even say they're holding their grain back. After you're done harvest, probably the last thing a farmer does the day after he parks his combine is start to load trucks."
According to the Alberta Canola Producers Commission, Lethbridge barley during the week of Oct. 28 was priced at C$185 per tonne.
"Lethbridge is trading in the C$180 to C$185 per tonne range right now," said Beusekom. "That's what feedlots are paying. Farmers can defer their sales to January, February or March and pick up C$3 or C$4

Australia: Carlsberg, Heineken and the University of Adelaide testing new barley variety Charger for the second year
|
The second year of commercial trials are underway in South Australia for a new variety of barley, Charger, developed in a three-way partnership with Carlsberg, Heineken and the University of Adelaide, Farm Weekly reported on November 5.
Now being distributed via Australian Grain Growers Co-operative, it follows almost nine years of work with the beer companies to test and develop a variety particularly suited for Australia –drawn from their patented Null-LOX barley, which was created in Europe in 2001 through cross-pollination to brew beer with a longer shelf life.
University of Adelaide barley program leader and Associate Prof Jason Eglinton says the Australian variety has more Gairdner heritage in it than anything else bred here.
"But really, it doesn't bear any specific resemblance to Gairdner and it's not really a product of any obvious varieties," he said.
The first commercial trials were harvested in 2012-13 from a single grower in the Mid North, but now there are up to 15 farmers in locations ranging from Serviceton, Vic, to Jamestown, growing a crop that is expected to reach about 4000 tonnes this harvest.
"This is just the first production from it and it is very good for a first variety," Prof Eglinton said.
