ABSTRACT
As reported previously,
the new German hop varieties Polaris, Mandarina
Bavaria, Muell Melon and Hallertau Blanc were used
for different dry hopping trials. Now all the data is
compiled in a recently published article. Here are
some interesting aspects: 4 to 5 % of the alpha-acids
added with dry hopping can be traced in the final
beers. The transfer rate of total polyphenols is 50 - 60
% and about 70 % for low-molecular polyphenols.
Transfer rates of aroma components as linalool,
geraniol, 3-Methylbutyl-2-methylpropanoate and 2-
Methylbutyl-2-methylpropanoate vary between 40
up to 220 % depending on variety. Here yeast may
play in important role. While aging further increases
the content of linalool and geraniol, almost all other
aroma compenents decrease. However no correlation
between sensory results and analytical values is
apparent, other than all beers were significantly
different..

USA: Barley has become a specialty crop
|
Barley has gone from being a major feed grain to a specialty food crop in the last twenty-five years. While there are still a few areas, primarily corn deficient regions, in the U.S. that utilize barley for livestock, barley’s major use is for malting. This malt makes its way into many of the cereals, crackers and baked goods and of course, the beer and other malt beverages. This shift to a higher value food crop has occurred as acreage has declined and barley’s value has increased, Farm & Ranch Guide reported on November 10 citing the American Malting Barley Association data.
The acreage decline began in 1985 when barley was seeded on 13.2 million acres. It is currently averaging (2009-2013) about 3.2 million acres. This decline has resulted in significant shifts in barley production and procurement. In the mid-1980s, the brewers, distillers and food companies using malted barley were able to select from a large pool of barley grown in the northern plains and intermountain west. Most of this barley was produced on the open market with some of irrigated acreage being contracted by end users.

Canada: Can Coors Banquet beer help Molson Coors?
|
The Molson Coors Brewing Company and its Canadian subsidiary, Molson Coors Canada, Inc., are known for iconic brews such as Molson Canadian, Coors Light, Carling, Blue Moon, Keystone and thanks to a joint venture with SABMiller, the company added the Miller line to its portfolio. However, there is one mystical brew that always seems to have beer drinkers going out of their way for more — Coors Banquet beer.
So why Banquet beer? According to legend, miners in the late 1800s threw celebratory banquets and Coors was the beer of choice because of its superior craftsmanship. Of course, this is a rumor being spread by Molson Coors, but it sounds good.
There were times in the US east of the Mississippi River when the absence of this beer was a mystery to everyone. Supposedly, due to the lack of pasteurization and preservatives, the beer required more expensive refrigerated transportation to prevent spoilage. Coors finally crossed the mighty Mississippi in 1981.
Now it is Canada’s turn to be introduced to this beer. Many Canadian beer drinkers have been asking for Coors Banquet.

USA, GA & SC: Southbound Brewing Company to distribute its beer in South Carolina
|
Southbound Brewing Co., South Georgia’s only production microbrewery located in Savannah Georgia will be expanding to its neighboring state South Carolina. The brewery will expand distribution to a limited portion of the state including Hilton Head, Bluffton, Beaufort, and Charleston. South Carolinians will see the Southbound rollout in mid November. Expansion throughout the remainder of the state will continue into 2014, Brewbound reported on November 11.
Southbound Brewing has entered into distribution agreements with Lee Distributing of the Reyes Beer Division. Lee Distributors sells and distributes nearly 5 million cases of some of the world’s best-known and loved brews along with a number of great craft beers to nearly 2,000 accounts along the Southeast coast of South Carolina and the seven surrounding counties. The company operates from two warehouses, one in Charleston, South Carolina, and a branch facility in Beaufort, South Carolina.
Lee Distributing will launch with two of the companies three mainstays, the Iron Lion Pale Ale and the Scattered Sun Belgian Wit. They will also be launching with the company’s first seasonal, the Day Trip’eler a Belgian Style Tripel. This seasonal is currently sold out in the state of Georgia. Southbound Brewing Company’s newest seasonal will be released this December.

USA, CO: Odell Brewing to distribute beer in Texas
|
In March, 2014 the Odell Brewing from Fort Collins, CO will expand the distribution of its beers to Texas, the 11th state in the brewery’s distribution footprint. Odell Brewing has partnered with Ben E. Keith Company, and will begin a statewide launch with draft in March, followed by a package launch in April, according to the company’s press release of November 8.
“We are very excited about our upcoming launch into Texas with Ben E. Keith,” said brewery founder/owner, Doug Odell. “Their track record and integrity is second to none, and we look forward to a great partnership.”
The brewery plans to bring brands Odell IPA, 90 Shilling, Seasonal Offerings including St. Lupulin, Four Pack offerings such as Myrcenary, as well as the limited release Cellar Series offerings.
Launching a state the size of Texas would not have been possible prior to the brewery’s recently completed expansion. This will be the first new market for Odell Brewing in over two years. The new brewhouse and additional fermentation vessels will provide the brewery much needed capacity to accommodate the Texas demand.

USA, MN: Castle Danger Brewery in Two Harbors starts expansion
|
Owner Jamie MacFarlane says expansion was always the goal for Castle Danger Brewery, a small beer-making operation 12 miles north of Two Harbors, MN, Duluth News Tribune reported on November 12.
She and her husband, Clint, just never imagined that they would be breaking ground only two years after they began in the business.
“When we first got started brewing, we thought we’d be looking at expanding about five years from starting,” she said. “We didn’t think it would be coming this quickly.”
Construction on their new 10,000-square-foot brewery and tap room, however, began recently at 17 Seventh St. in downtown Two Harbors, MN. The new facility will give them 20 times the production capacity they have now.
The couple said they hope to be up and running in their new facility by early spring 2014.
The MacFarlanes hired a full-time employee in June, and they expect to add a few more at the new location. When the facility is running at full capacity — 8 to 10 years down the road by Jamie’s estimate, they expect to have about 15 full-time employees.

USA, SD: Miner Brewing Co. opens its doors for business in Hill City
|
The newest member of the popular Prairie Berry Winery in Hill City, SD celebrates opening for business on November 11, Newscenter1.tv reported on November 10.
Miner Brewing Co. becomes a reality for Prairie Berry owners Sandi Vojta and Matt Keck.
The brew house produces regionally-inspired craft beers, which people can taste and take home from the tap room.
The brewery soft launched earlier in November.
Once the final beers are brewed this week, Miner Brewing anticipates offering up to 10 beers on tap.

USA, NY: Double Barrel Brewing Company to open in East Syracuse
|
For years, Pete Kirkgasser of East Syracuse has been one of the most prolific and edge -pushing members of Syracuse’s home brewers’ group, according to Syracuse.com.
Now he is the brewmaster at his own brewery. His Double Barrel Brewing Co., located in the rear of Eastwood’s Sacred Melody Plaza on James Street, is starting up this month.
“I’ve always made beer,” Kirkgasser said. “Now I get to try making money at it.”
The brewery should have beers ready to sample and purchase in the tasting room on November 23 and 24, the weekend before Thanksgiving.
Since receiving his state license last week, Kirkgasser has been busy, producing an India Pale Ale (IPA), a Porter, a Stout, a Scottish “Heavy,” a Pale Ale, a Brown Ale, a Belgian Golden Ale and a Belgian Golden Strong Ale.
That covers a lot of beer bases. Kirkgasser can and will brew almost any kind of beer, but his preference has always been for highly hopped brews.

USA, CO: River North Brewery increasing its fermentation capacity
|
Denver, Colorado’s River North Brewery is increasing its fermentation capacity by more than 40% with the addition of two 30-barrel fermenters. Additionally, a new 30-barrel brite beer tank is effectively tripling the brewery’s carbonation space, according to Shanken News Daily.
River North says the moves will allow it to keep up with demand for River North White, its Belgian-style witbier, which was recently released in canned four-packs.
A second canned offering, a Belgian-style red IPA to be known as River North Ale, is expected to hit shelves in the next two to three months. In its second year of operation, River North expects to produce more than 1,000 barrels this year.

Canada, NB: Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault to open in New Brunswick next year
|
The small and primarily francophone city of Edmundston in the north-western corner of New Brunswick is set to become home to the province’s newest craft brewery in mid-2014, Canadian Beer News reported on November 11.
Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault is a brewery being founded by president André Léger along with partners Mychèle Poitras, André Morneault and André LeBlanc. Planned to open in May 2014 in a former police station in downtown Edmundston, the brewery intends to have a strong regional focus, and will work to produce Belgian-inspired beers suited to the local community.

USA, OR: Harvester Brewing Company releases new Squash Ale
|
Harvester Brewing has introduced its 2013 offering - Squash Ale - produced using locally-grown squash that was harvested and roasted by the company’s team, Drinks Business Review reports.
To create Squash Ale, the company has sourced squash from the fields at Love Farm Organics, in Forest Grove, Oregon.
The harvest was then sliced, diced, seeded and roasted in the oven at Jensen's Bread & Bakeries in Portland. Then the company has added roasted and crushed pumpkin seeds to the mash.
It is triple squashed with squash added in the mash tun, kettle, and fermenter, which was slow roasted for five days into a squash butter.
Then it spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and toasted coriander to complement the squash flavors and aromas without overpowering the beer.
The new ale is currently available on draft from 7 November 2013 at the brewery's gastropub. The brewery also plans to introduce this new ale in bottles in Oregon and Washington next week.
Harvester Brewing beers are distributed in Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Northern Idaho.

USA, WI: Titletown Brewing Company expansion to start soon
|
With financial approval obtained on November 12 from the city's redevelopment authority, a Green Bay hot spot is a step closer to increasing its footmark in the city's downtown, according to Fox News.
Titletown Brewing Company is set to start expanding in the next few weeks.
The city council is expected to give one final approval next week.
The old Larsen Canning buildings, eyesores for years in the Broadway District, are ready to be taken over by its neighbors.
“I think we're experiencing the craft brewing kind of growing strong and the need for our products throughout the state,” said Brent Weycker, the owner of Titletown Brewing.
Titletown Brewing is going to move its brewing operations to the old canning buildings by mid-May. The plan is to double beer production, eventually add banquet space and potentially a rooftop beer garden.
There is now extra incentive. The State Senate passed a bill, doubling the state's historic tax credit to 20% for redeveloping old buildings. Governor Walker is looking at signing the bill in Green Bay.

USA: MillerCoors decides to discontinue lime-flavoured Miller Chill
|
Miller Chill, the lime-flavored beer, which was once locked in a high-profile battle with Bud Light Lime, will be discontinued next year as MillerCoors focuses on other priorities, including the upcoming launches of higher-alcohol Miller Fortune and Smith & Forge Hard Cider, AdvertisingAge reported on November 12.
"We have been very vocal about our desire to evolve our portfolio to the fast-growing and higher margin segments of the beer business…especially at the high end," spokesman Jonathan Stern said in an email, referencing brands such as Redd's, Third Shift and Leinenkugel Summer Shandy. "As part of this initiative, we are trimming low-volume and low-value SKUs and brands," including eliminating Miller Chill, he confirmed. He said the moves would be "carefully managed with our distributors and chain customers on a market-by-market basis over time to ensure we maintain shelf space and replace with higher velocity SKUs."
The brewer has already discontinued Southpaw Light, a low-profile economy brand, and it will scale back another small brand called Red Dog. "Those brands are being cut to make way for these high net revenue brands and that's a big focus next year," CEO Tom Long said on a recent earnings call.

USA: Over 1 million homebrewers brew 2 million barrels annually
|
The American Homebrewers Association (AHA)—the not-for-profit trade association serving as a resource and community for homebrewers—released results of a first-ever nationwide homebrewer survey on November 12, a break-down of demographics, brewing habits and shopping behaviors of American homebrewers.
According to the survey, there are an estimated 1.2 million homebrewers in the United States, two-thirds of whom began brewing in 2005 or later.
"The homebrewing community is in every corner of the country and highly engaged in this hobby," said Gary Glass, director, American Homebrewers Association. "From the amount of money spent on supplies to the sheer number of homebrewers, it's clear this is a growing trend and people are incredibly interested in learning about and making their own brews at home."
Demographics: The average homebrewer is 40 years old, with most (60 percent) falling between 30 and 49 years old. The majority of homebrewers are married or in a domestic partnership (78 percent), have a college degree or some form of higher education (69 percent), and are highly affluent-nearly 60 percent of all homebrewers have household incomes of $75,000 or more.

The beer business is undergoing a renaissance as brewers increasingly take on the market leader Almaza, owned by Dutch conglomerate Heineken International. The success of 961, named after the country’s calling code, prompted Almaza to introduce a malt beer to its portfolio and, last year, Almaza Light, The Daily Star Lebanon reported on November 11.
Now there are upcoming contenders in the market, yet at opposite ends of the spectrum. One is a craft brewery producing on a microscale, while the other is entering the big leagues with a $12 million to $15 million investment in the Bekaa Valley. Both producers want to up the quality of brew on offer as well as the amount of beer being drunk.

Denmark: Carlsberg appoints new Senior Vice President for Asia

Christopher Warmoth joins Carlsberg as Senior Vice President for the Asia Region and member of the Executive Committee, Wall Street Journal reports.
Christopher Warmoth (54) has been appointed Senior Vice President for the Asia region. He joins Carlsberg from H.J. Heinz where he has held various top positions in the Asia Pacific and Continental/ Eastern European regions, latest as Executive VP for the Asia-Pacific, Africa and Middle East Region. Prior to joining Heinz Chris Warmoth worked for the Coca-Cola Company and for Procter & Gamble.
Commenting on this announcement, Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen, President and CEO of the Carlsberg Group says:
