Fruits from the Hallertau (Part 2)
ABSTRACT
As reported previously,
the new German hop varieties Polaris, Mandarina
Bavaria, Muell Melon and Hallertau Blanc were used
for different dry hopping trials. Now all the data is
compiled in a recently published article. Here are
some interesting aspects: 4 to 5 % of the alpha-acids
added with dry hopping can be traced in the final
beers. The transfer rate of total polyphenols is 50 - 60
% and about 70 % for low-molecular polyphenols.
Transfer rates of aroma components as linalool,
geraniol, 3-Methylbutyl-2-methylpropanoate and 2-
Methylbutyl-2-methylpropanoate vary between 40
up to 220 % depending on variety. Here yeast may
play in important role. While aging further increases
the content of linalool and geraniol, almost all other
aroma compenents decrease. However no correlation
between sensory results and analytical values is
apparent, other than all beers were significantly
different.. Read more

Russia: Anadolu Efes to close its Moscow plant
|
Turkish brewer Anadolu Efes announced on November 14 that it will stop producing beer and yeast in its Moscow facilities and will move production to other parts of Russia by Jan. 1, 2014.
In a written statement issued on November 14 to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), the company said the decision was made after the Russian beer market shrank by 20 percent over the last five years, and the capacity usage for brewers fell to around 60 percent.
Anadolu Efes said the move was expected to raise the company’s competitiveness and productivity in Russia.
The Moscow authorities have recently imposed a series of tougher alcohol sale rules, banning the sale of beer from street stands as of Jan. 1, 2013. Beer was thus made legally equal to strong alcoholic drinks, as before this ban drinks with an alcohol content of lower than 5 percent were permitted for sale at street stands.
The ban on the sale of beer at street stands has been imposed at the federal level since the beginning of this year.
The Moscow authorities also introduced a ban on the nighttime sale of strong alcoholic drinks from 11.00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. several days ago.

Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s local unit sees half-year earnings rise 9.5%
|
SABMiller's Zimbabwe unit reported a 9.5 percent rise in half-year earnings on November 13 on the back of rising sorghum beer and non-alcoholic beverages sales, which made up for a decline in lager beer volumes.
Delta Corporation, 38 percent owned by global brewing giant SABMiller, said earnings per share rose to 3.83 cents in the six months to end-September, up from 3.50 cents.
Chief executive Pearson Gowero said lager beer volumes declined 10 percent during the period as economic growth slowed, forcing some consumers to migrate to the cheaper sorghum beer.
After-tax profit increased 12 percent to $47.2 million during the six-month period as overall revenue grew by 5 percent to $316 million.

USA: Newcastle introduces Limited-Edition Cabbie Black Ale
|
Just in time for the holidays, Newcastle is introducing a new limited-edition brew that will have fans calling for a Cabbie in more ways than one, Marketwired reported on November 14.
Beginning this month, beer drinkers can hail a Newcastle Cabbie Black Ale in bars and liquor stores nationwide. Cabbie is a deep, dark black ale with a soft hoppy aroma and subtle fruit notes that lead to bittersweet tastes of chocolate and coffee. Newcastle Cabbie is a smooth, tasty black brew with 4.2 percent alcohol by volume and 25 International Bittering Units.
The launch of Newcastle Cabbie will be supported by a national digital campaign, extensive social media promotion and sampling (where legal). Newcastle Cabbie will be priced comparably to Newcastle Brown Ale and available nationally from November 2013 through March 2014 in 6-packs and 12-packs, at retail and on tap for on-premise accounts in most major markets. Like Newcastle Brown Ale, Newcastle Cabbie is brewed and bottled in the United Kingdom, and its label and packaging feature a London-style black taxi cab. Beer drinkers will notice a similar black cab featured on Newcastle Cabbie tap handles at their favorite bars and pubs starting this month.

World: SABMiller re-appoints John Manser as acting chairman due to a deterioration in Graham Mackay’s health
|
Brewer SABMiller has re-appointed John Manser as acting chairman due to a deterioration in the health of chairman Graham Mackay, it said on November 15.
Manser was acting chairman for five months earlier this year when Mackay took medical leave of absence to focus on his treatment following surgery for a brain tumour in April.
Mackay recovered sufficiently to return to his role in September, but following a recent sudden worsening of his condition, the board has agreed to his request for a further leave of absence.
SABMiller said its board will continue to keep the position under review.
