Fruits from the Hallertau (Part 2)

ABSTRACT
As reported previously, the new German hop varieties Polaris, Mandarina Bavaria, Muell Melon and Hallertau Blanc were used for different dry hopping trials. Now all the data is compiled in a recently published article. Here are some interesting aspects: 4 to 5 % of the alpha-acids added with dry hopping can be traced in the final beers. The transfer rate of total polyphenols is 50 - 60 % and about 70 % for low-molecular polyphenols. Transfer rates of aroma components as linalool, geraniol, 3-Methylbutyl-2-methylpropanoate and 2- Methylbutyl-2-methylpropanoate vary between 40 up to 220 % depending on variety. Here yeast may play in important role. While aging further increases the content of linalool and geraniol, almost all other aroma compenents decrease. However no correlation between sensory results and analytical values is apparent, other than all beers were significantly different..

Brewery news USA: Newcastle introduces Limited-Edition Cabbie Black Ale
Just in time for the holidays, Newcastle is introducing a new limited-edition brew that will have fans calling for a Cabbie in more ways than one, Marketwired reported on November 14.

Beginning this month, beer drinkers can hail a Newcastle Cabbie Black Ale in bars and liquor stores nationwide. Cabbie is a deep, dark black ale with a soft hoppy aroma and subtle fruit notes that lead to bittersweet tastes of chocolate and coffee. Newcastle Cabbie is a smooth, tasty black brew with 4.2 percent alcohol by volume and 25 International Bittering Units.

The launch of Newcastle Cabbie will be supported by a national digital campaign, extensive social media promotion and sampling (where legal). Newcastle Cabbie will be priced comparably to Newcastle Brown Ale and available nationally from November 2013 through March 2014 in 6-packs and 12-packs, at retail and on tap for on-premise accounts in most major markets. Like Newcastle Brown Ale, Newcastle Cabbie is brewed and bottled in the United Kingdom, and its label and packaging feature a London-style black taxi cab. Beer drinkers will notice a similar black cab featured on Newcastle Cabbie tap handles at their favorite bars and pubs starting this month.

Brewery news USA, MI: Gonzo's BiggDogg Brewing opens in downtown Kalamazoo
Gonzo's BiggDogg Brewing, the new brewpub and restaurant, located at 140 S. Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo, MI opened on November 12 and was welcoming a quiet stream of customers in the evening of November 13, Mlive Kalamazoo reports.

The brewery is one of four new craft beer destinations in the Kalamazoo area that have opened or are about to open.

"I think it's exciting to become a part of the beer culture in Kalamazoo," said Kevin Hyde, assistant brewer at Gonzo's BiggDogg Brewing.

Haner said his "must-try" beers, out of eight on tap Wednesday, were the Burning Sun Redd amber ale, Sub-Continental IPA and Vanilla Porter ale, also known as VP Ale.

Brewery news USA, MA: New brewery and taproom coming to Hudson
The Medusa Brewing Company is coming to Hudson, and with it, they’re bringing something new to Massachusetts – a taproom, Wicked Local reported on November 14.

Three friends, Keith Antul of Chelmsford, Tom Sutter of Holden and Keith Sullivan of Worcester, leased the former Aubuchon Hardware building on Main Street in Hudson and plan to open the brewery and taproom this summer.

The Medusa Brewing Company will be the second brewery to open in MetroWest. Jack’s Abby Brewing in Framingham is the other. There are also two brewpubs in Framingham, John Harvard’s and Framingham Beer Works.

The Medusa Brewing Company plans to take advantage of a recent rule change in the Massachusetts Farmers/Brewers License that allows for on-premise sales of full pours of their beers. Previously, breweries could only pour 2-ounce samples of beer.

Taprooms, where breweries pour and sell full glasses of beer but do not sell food, are popular in other parts of the country. Here in Massachusetts currently, Night Shift Brewing in Everett is running a taproom, and Jack’s Abby has gotten town approval to begin serving pints of its beers.

"We originally thought of doing a brewpub, but there’s a lot that goes into it," said Antul. "We really didn’t want ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Baxter Brewing Company to start Vermont distribution
Baxter Brewing Company, the acclaimed all-cans craft brewery in Lewiston, Maine that was the first of its kind in New England, will be available throughout Vermont beginning next month. “Vermonters have a long, deep appreciation for craft beer,” said company founder and CEO, Luke Livingston. “We’ve wanted to be part of that exciting environment ever since we started, but until now we hadn’t been able to make enough beer to even supply our existing markets in Maine and Massachusetts.” Recent new construction has expanded the brewery’s capacity by more than 400%, and Vermont is the first place the brewery has chosen to go with its new capabilities, Brewbound reported on November 15.

Baxter currently produces three year-round varieties plus three unique seasonal offerings, and all will be made available to retailers, restaurants and bars throughout Vermont by g. housen, the state’s leading distributor of craft beers. “We are thrilled to add Baxter’s beers to our list,” said Scott Anderson, g. housen, Craft Beer Portfolio Manager. “There is a great craft beer culture here in Vermont, and we’re proud to represent some of the finest craft beers in the world.” He added, “Baxter has already proven to be very popular at some ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Troy Casey to open Casey Brewing & Blending in Glenwood
For the past five years, Troy Casey has worked for AC Golden, the MillerCoors-owned beer incubator in Golden that makes everything from Colorado Native lager to small-batch sour ales that use Colorado-grown peaches and apricots to the style-busting India Pale Lager that just won an award at the Great American Beer Festival.

Over that time, Casey has helped AC Golden develop a cachet and a distinctive reputation among craft beer drinkers despite its corporate parent and its lack of a tasting room, according to Westword Blog.

Now Casey is leaving to open his own artisan brewery in or near Glenwood Springs, Casey Brewing & Blending, where he will focus on "the art of blending beer."

The process will work like this: Casey will hire Chase Engel, who is planning to open a brewery, Roaring Fork Beer Company, in Carbondale next spring, to contract-brew his wort, which is what beer is called before it has been fermented.

Then Casey will transport the wort to his own facility (he is still looking for a location) in order to add a variety of different yeast stains and to age all of it in oak barrels. After that, he'll "bring together unique flavors from several different barrels to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Resort Brewery owner announces name change to avoid legal fight
An Ocean City brewery and Boardwalk restaurant and bar will be changing its name after its owner decided this week to drop his challenge to a civil lawsuit filed in August by an Internet retailer alleging trademark infringement on the registered mark “Shorebilly”, The Dispatch reported on November 14.

In August, Teal Bay Alliances, a resort-based retailer that markets and distributes various items of clothing and other merchandize prominently featuring the term Shorebilly, filed suit in US District Court against Shorebilly Brewing Company alleging the popular brewery on the Boardwalk was infringing on its registered trademark.

Southbound One, Inc. and brewery owner Danny Robinson fought the suit, alleging, among other things, the term “Shorebilly” was generic and not subject to trademark protection.

However, a little over three months into the litigation, Southbound One, Inc. and Robinson decided this week to stop fighting the suit and move on. As a result, Robinson is currently looking for a creative new name for his brewery and brew pub.

“I made the decision to change the name of the brewery and the restaurant,” he said. “After a long battle, a battle I believe we could have won, I can’t spend another minute or another dollar fighting this. I ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Eudora Brewing opening another brew-on-premise site in Kettering
Eudora Brewing Company, a new brew-on-premise brewery and tasting room, opens Friday (November 15) in Kettering, a Dayton suburb, Akron Beacon Journal announced on November 14.

Neil Chabut, a 2011 University of Dayton graduate and homebrewer, worked in a homebrew shop for about a year before launching the brewery. His inspiration came from working at the shop.

In addition to The Brew Kettle in Strongsville, Eudora joins other Ohio brew-on-premise sites North High in Columbus, Little Mountain in Mentor and Father John's in Bryan.

While the tasting room is opening this weekend, Chabut said, the brew-on-premise portion of the business won't open yet for a couple of months.

The brewery will launch with five beers: Sundowner, a blonde ale; Boomerang, an American India pale ale; The Bee's Knees, an American pale/amber ale; Mother Fuggle, a hybrid of an English and American brown ale made with Fuggle hops; and Thunderball, an oatmeal stout.

"We'll also have a seasonal beer starting this winter," Chabut said. "I have not decided on the style yet. But that'll be six beers total on tap once we're up and running."

The brewery, about 3,000 square feet, features a three-barrel, all-electric system from Brewmation. Eudora will sell growlers, but there are no plans ...More info on site

It’s been 17 years since Coronado Brewing brewed its first hoppy West Coast style ale, and this month the Southern California beers will head north to taps and shelves in Portland, Oregon, Brewbound reported on November 12.

Coronado’s hoppy IPA’s, stouts and Imperial ales are well known throughout California, Arizona and Florida as they quickly blazing a trail across the US.

This marks the 14th state the brewer will be bringing its lineup of beers to, which includes Islander IPA, Idiot IPA, Orange Ave Wit, Mermaids Red, Blue Bridge Coffee Stout and its winter seasonal Stupid Stout.

The beer will be distributed through General Distributors in Oregon City. “The partnership with Coronado brings an interesting new choice to Oregon craft beer drinkers that was only till now available when they traveled south,” said vice president Jim Fick. “You can taste the experience that went into each batch. Brewery news USA, DE: Dogfish Head brewery continues to get public attention
One of the nation’s most innovative and fastest growing breweries is on the way to the ocean beaches many Washingtonians frequent. The Dogfish Head brewery, in Milton, DE, has become the 13th largest craft brewery in the country, producing over 170,000 barrels of beer in 2012, up 20 percent from 2011. The brewery is finishing an expansion which will allow brewing 600,000 barrels per year, Gazette reported on November 13.

Sam Calagione, the brewery’s co-founder and co-owner, opened the Dogfish Head brewpub in 1995 in Rehoboth Beach, DE, near his wife’s hometown. It was named after Calagione’s fondly-remembered vacation spot near Boothbay Harbor in Maine to lend a New England character.

Starting with a minuscule 12-gallon brewing facility that needed constant use to keep up with customer demand, Calagione was continuously brewing. He experimented all the time in a brewing career that has led to his being called the “Mad Alchemist of Brewing.” Demand rapidly increased and a packaging brewery was added in 1997.

The kitchen to brewpot escapades gave Dogfish a well-earned reputation for using unusual ingredients and brewing unusual beers. Some of the non-standard additions to the Dogfish beers include St. John’s Wort, Saffron, Agave nectar, Hawthorn Berry from China, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: David Stone to open a craft brewery in Big Bear Valley
David Stone, the owner of three lodges, two entertainment venues, and a wine tasting room and vineyard is moving to beer for his next venture. Stone is turning a building on Stone Road in Big Bear Lake into a craft brewery and restaurant. The brewery will be located in the building adjacent to Peppercorn Grille in the Village area of Big Bear Lake, CA, Bigbeargrizzly.net reported on November 13.

Stone Summit Brewery was the original name, but the name was recently abandoned. The applicant is operating under Seven Oaks Inc. Stone said he is considering two different options for the name, but hasn’t made a final decision as yet.

Stone had planned to build a brewery and restaurant on what is known as Christmas Corner in the lot at the intersection of Village Drive and Pine Knot Avenue. That idea fell through due to the Village not being zoned for manufacturing and distribution.

The beer brewed at the Stone Road site will be for consumption there and a retail component that allows the brewery to fill what are known as growlers for off-site consumption.

The license application is pending, according to the ABC website.

The license does not allow bottling at the Stone ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Motorworks Brewery is hiring, partnering with Village of the Arts businesses
Motorworks Brewing is hiring 15 to 20 tap room employees with a goal of opening by mid-December in Bradenton, FL, Bradenton.com reported on November 14.

The opening is not only exciting for eager beer enthusiasts, but also Village of the Arts business owners who anticipate their restaurants and shops benefiting from the new brewery.

Ann Altman, vice president of marketing and community relations for Motorworks, said the company is looking to hire people who are passionate about beer.

"We are mostly hiring in the brewery's tap room. The brewery itself is still in the process of being completed," said Altman.

She said the full brewery, 1014 Ninth St W., is scheduled for completion in February.

But in December, the brewery's tap room will open. It will feature 30 craft beers on tap, six of them from Motorworks Brewing. Customers can convene in the beer garden.

The brewery will be the first of three scheduled to open in the Bradenton area. One of the other breweries will be located a few blocks from Motorworks, on 17th Avenue West.

Motorworks' positions include tap room general manager and shift brewers. The brewery will also host a job fair in the beer garden on November 16.

Brewery news USA, AZ: San Tan Brewing starts release of seasonal brews
San Tan Brewing has launched the first of its four seasonal brews, RailSlide Imperial Spiced Ale, in 12 oz cans, Drinks Business Review reported on November 14.

Infused with some touch of ginger, cardamom and cinnamon, RailSlide Imperial Spiced Ale is developed in collaboration with Liberty Market. The ale's malt also includes two-row, roasted, white wheat, chocolate, Munich and caramel.

The company's other three brews include the Count Hopula Imperial Red IPA, Sex Panther Imperial Chocolate Porter, and the Mr. Pineapple Wheat Beer.

One of the ingredients and flavors in the drink is the Chai tea blend from Liberty Market, which features fresh ginger, nutmeg, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves.

Anthony Canecchia, the owner and head brewer, said that the original plan was to create the seasonal brew in 16oz cans.

Apart from launching the new seasonal brew, the company also opened a new distribution facility in the East Valley that will hold a 50-barrel system, which has a 1,500-gallon brewing capacity.

The company could receive up to $30,000 over five years.

Gustafson noted that the brewery's economic impact will be felt by neighboring businesses, including those in Village of the Arts.

Brewery news Russia: Anadolu Efes to close its Moscow plant
Turkish brewer Anadolu Efes announced on November 14 that it will stop producing beer and yeast in its Moscow facilities and will move production to other parts of Russia by Jan. 1, 2014.

In a written statement issued on November 14 to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), the company said the decision was made after the Russian beer market shrank by 20 percent over the last five years, and the capacity usage for brewers fell to around 60 percent.

Anadolu Efes said the move was expected to raise the company’s competitiveness and productivity in Russia.

The Moscow authorities have recently imposed a series of tougher alcohol sale rules, banning the sale of beer from street stands as of Jan. 1, 2013. Beer was thus made legally equal to strong alcoholic drinks, as before this ban drinks with an alcohol content of lower than 5 percent were permitted for sale at street stands.

The ban on the sale of beer at street stands has been imposed at the federal level since the beginning of this year.

The Moscow authorities also introduced a ban on the nighttime sale of strong alcoholic drinks from 11.00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. several days ago. The production ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s local unit sees half-year earnings rise 9.5%
SABMiller's Zimbabwe unit reported a 9.5 percent rise in half-year earnings on November 13 on the back of rising sorghum beer and non-alcoholic beverages sales, which made up for a decline in lager beer volumes.

Delta Corporation, 38 percent owned by global brewing giant SABMiller, said earnings per share rose to 3.83 cents in the six months to end-September, up from 3.50 cents.

Chief executive Pearson Gowero said lager beer volumes declined 10 percent during the period as economic growth slowed, forcing some consumers to migrate to the cheaper sorghum beer.

After-tax profit increased 12 percent to $47.2 million during the six-month period as overall revenue grew by 5 percent to $316 million.

Brewery news World: SABMiller re-appoints John Manser as acting chairman due to a deterioration in Graham Mackay’s health
Brewer SABMiller has re-appointed John Manser as acting chairman due to a deterioration in the health of chairman Graham Mackay, it said on November 15.

Manser was acting chairman for five months earlier this year when Mackay took medical leave of absence to focus on his treatment following surgery for a brain tumour in April.

Mackay recovered sufficiently to return to his role in September, but following a recent sudden worsening of his condition, the board has agreed to his request for a further leave of absence.

SABMiller said its board will continue to keep the position under review.
