Discoveries in the bitter reception world
ABSTRACT
Flavonoids and Isoflavonoids, not only from hops but
also from other plants, are in the focus of several
health related investigations and potent candidates
for nutraceuticals. However they have a relatively
strong bitter taste. These researchers discovered the
relevant bitter taste receptors for these compounds
namely hTAS2R14, a recepter that has been regarded
as a more broadly tuned receptor (also know to
interact with isohumulones), and hTAS2R39 a less
"famous" bitter receptor. These Dutch researchers
were able to identify many different flavonoids as
intrinsically bitter and elucidated the structural
requirements for bitterness of (iso)flavonoids.
However their objective is not to take advantage of
the bitterness these compounds cause but rather to
prevent the introduction of bitter taste in the design
of functional foods enriched with (iso)flavonoid
bioactives. Isn't this bitter? Read more

USA: AB InBev starts selling Bud Light in screw-top aluminum bottles
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV is rolling out Bud Light in screw-top aluminum bottles as the world’s biggest brewer seeks to stabilize the waning brand in the U.S., where consumers are turning to craft beers and other beverages, according to Bloomberg.
AB InBev has invested $150 million to create the new packaging, a 16-ounce (473 milliliters) resealable light metal bottle, Luiz Edmond, the brewer’s North American president, said on November 15 at a meeting with journalists in New York. The company will back up the new look with Super Bowl advertising early next year.
Consumers think the bottle is “more premium, more refreshing,” Paul Chibe, vice president U.S. marketing for AB InBev, said at the meeting. “We need to continue to evolve what Bud Light stands for,” he said. “We’re taking our time. It’s not an easy job.”
Leuven, Belgium-based AB InBev, which gets 37 percent of earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization from the U.S., was created in 2008 when InBev NV bought Anheuser-Busch Cos. in a $52 billion acquisition. Since then, it’s been seeking to revitalize the U.S.-based Anheuser Busch’s Budweiser and Bud Light brands in the country as well as to sell more “premium” -- or expensive -- labels to support

The Czech Republic: More and more small breweries entering the Czech market
|
A phenomenon brewing in the Czech beer industry, particularly around Prague, has upstart small breweries carving out their own niches in the local marketplace. Much like the microbrew craze that began expanding across the United States starting in the 1980s, new beers are making headway in a country long dominated by much larger brands, according to Prague Post.
In the past few years, Břevnovský Pivovar in Prague and Únětický Pivovar just outside the city have revamped old breweries left empty following the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, creating some of the best Czech lagers in the country. Other small and mid-size breweries are also making their mark.
Although tiny in comparison to the larger breweries like Pilsner Urquell and Staropramen, these startups are brewing at full capacity, just to keep up with the constantly increasing demand.
While the fuss around the new beers is more of a complement to than competition for the big brewers — there are already 90 styles of beer in a country that relishes its reputation as the top consumer of beer per capita in the world — it does breathe new life into the local beer scene, say bar owners and customers.
Despite being new to present-day imbibers, most of

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation plans to invest in new line for sorghum beer
|
Delta Corporation says it will invest in the new line for sorghum beer and expand its portfolio of alternative beverages to “capture consumer spend” in the wake of declining lager beer consumption, The Zimbabwe Standard reported on November 17.
Lager beer volumes dipped 10% in the wake of a review in excise duty that saw some retailers increasing prices by over 30%.
The company is pushing for excise duty reduction to drive lager beer growth.
However sales were down 4% to US$164 million driven by premium lagers which mitigated some of the losses despite a decline in volume.
Sparkling beverages and Chibuku grew by 9% and 8% respectively.
Announcing the group’s financial results for the half year ended September 30, Delta’s executive director in charge of finance, Matts Valela said the first half of the year had been tough and challenging.
He said the consumer was stretched and spending was generally soft across the market. “Consumers are looking for value. We are seeing some trending down as they search for value packs,” Valela said.
“We are trying to sweat our portfolio to deliver value.”
The growth in sparkling beverages was spurred by the rollout in PET where the company has flexibility in introducing various sizes, according to chief

Nigeria: Guinness commissions final phase of N52 billion plant extension in Benin
|
Guinness Nigeria Plc, the nation’s foremost brewing company, commissioned on November 17 the final phase of its N52 billion investment programme as well as a community project at a ceremonial gathering attended by the Edo State Governor at its Benin Brewery, Benin City, according to Daily Times Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, said he was proud of the Guinness Brewery in Benin and hoped that the company will continue to do good business in the state.
“I am a big fan of Guinness Nigeria Plc and I am proud to say that anywhere. However, more than my personal preference for the brand, I also am appreciative of what the company is doing for the local community.
“I know only too well the many jobs that your activities in the state have provided for our good citizens but I will still call on you to do more. I know that we have a partner in Guinness and one area where we can make more impact is farming. Guinness in a major consumer of grains and this will provide good work for our farmers especially in the rural areas and I am willing to support giving this

India: More consumers prefer premium beer in Tamil Nadu
|
Premiumisation seems to be the overriding trend in the liquor business in Tamil Nadu. The development is perhaps most clearly illustrated in the beer segment, where demand for premium brands is growing faster than their regular counterparts, The Hindu Businessline reported on November 17.
Consumers, even in tier-III markets, prefer premium brands, say industry sources.
This is clearly evident from the fact that premium brands such as British Empire, Kingfisher Superior, Vorion 12000, Max 11000 and Maxkool sell faster than regular brands from the respective manufacturers. For example, Max 11000 and Maxkool from the Empee stable, account for over 60 per cent of the company’s beer sales. Similarly, British Empire accounts for more than 40 per cent of SNJ Breweries’, which produces two regular beers under the brands SNJ 10000 and High Voltage.
Industry sources say, irrespective of alcohol strength, consumers prefer premium beer for its improved quality and taste.
According to sources in the State-owned TASMAC (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation), the monopoly wholesaler and retailer of liquor, on average 29 lakh cases (12 bottles of 650 ml each) of beer are sold in the State every month. Premium brands alone account for close to 40 per cent of sales. The retail price

Namibia: Barley crop can bring N$200 million boost to local agriculture
|
Brewing giant Namibia Breweries Ltd (NBL) says local production of malted barley and other related crops will result in a financial boost to the agricultural sector as farmers are expected to generate around N$200 million in revenue annually, AllAfrica.com reported on November 15.
NBL said since barley is a seasonal crop planted between May and October its production under irrigation would provide opportunities for the production of other crops such as maize, creating 2500 direct jobs while generating N$200 million in revenue to farmers. In addition, around N$30 million will go to the government coffers as VAT.
NBL said at full capacity it requires 40,000 tons of barley annually. To meet this demand, Martin Krafft the Project Manager for the barley project dubbed Project Kernel said 12,000 ha of irrigation land, an investment of N$1 billion in infrastructure, and the development of new irrigation land will be required.
So far NBL says it has invested close to N$3 million during the trials of the project. The NSX-listed company intends to set up a malting plant at a cost N$250 million as well as storage facilities that would cost N$60 million to build. The company will also invest millions to provide expertise to
