Spotlight back on Xanthohumol?

ABSTRACT
Xanthohumol was so to say "the medical scientists darling" for a couple of years, with excellent results in very different in vitro studies testing the effectivness in regard to prevention of cancer, osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases. Since the promising results could not be transferred into in vivo settings the medicinal research has died down a bit. Nevertheless brewing researchers are looking for ways to increase the content of Xanthohumol and other prenylflavanoids in beer. One of these studies found that the solubility of xanthohumol was higher in sweet worts prepared from roasted malts than from Pilsen or melanoidin malts. Isomerization reactions occurring at increased temperatures is one of the main reasons for the loss of xanthohumol in the brewing process and therefore the most appropriate temperature for addition of xanthohumol products to sweet worts was found to be below 60°C. In contrast to other findings the influence of filtration and stabilization materials on the concentration of xanthohumol only showed minor effect. A second study found that the use of green hops is beneficial in regards to increasing the final content of Xanthohumol or 8-PN. However the final concentration of Xanthohumol is still in a low range of 1-2 mg/l. And the question is if these homeopathic concentrations can really be related to any health benefits.

Brewery news India & USA: United Breweries Group to invest $2 mln in its US-based loss making brewing company
Liquor baron Vijay Mallya-led UB Group has decided to infuse $2 million in a US-based loss making firm Mendocino Brewing Company to revive its fortunes, The Economic Times reported on November 25.

UB has also agreed to "favourably consider additional investment to underpin growth based on detailed business plan to be submitted in due course" by Mendocino, the company said in a regulatory filing.

UB's readiness to invest in the US firm comes even as the group's Kingfisher Airlines in India remains grounded for over a year due to severe financial problems.

Mendocino Brewing Company (MBC), in which United Breweries Holdings Ltd (UBHL) holds 68.1 per cent stake and another group firm United Breweries of America has 24.5 per cent equity, has exclusive licence to brew and distribute Kingfisher Premium Lager beer in certain foreign markets.

UBHL is also the holding company of all the listed entities of Mallya-led UB Group, including Kingfisher.

According to Mendocino's regulatory filing with the US markets regulator SEC, UBHL has agreed "to commit an initial funding of $2 million in four half yearly instalments with the first instalment to be remitted expeditiously."

The investment is being made to "protect and enhance the value of its existing investments in MBC," the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: Great Northern Brewing Company to expand
Six-packs of Great Northern Brewing Co.’s line of craft beers have been flying off grocery shelves this year at an unprecedented rate. Business has been so good, in fact, that at the peak of tourist season the brewery’s Draught House in Whitefish, MT was down to just three beers on tap. They couldn’t brew the stuff fast enough, the Western News reported on November 26.

“Orders were coming in, and we couldn’t fill them,” said Manager Marcus Duffey. “That left our distributors dry and caused us to lose ground.”

To keep pace with the booming demand, Great Northern is planning its first expansion in 19 years.

Two new 25-foot-tall fermenters and a brite tank will be installed next spring at the downtown facility, upping production by 50 percent. They expect to brew about 6,500 barrels next year. “If we hit 6,500 barrels, we will be busy 24 hours a day,” Duffey said. An additional brewer is expected to be hired, along with another person in packaging.

Great Northern utilized a Montana West Economic Development revolving loan fund to leverage its investment in the new equipment.

Duffey says it’s unlikely this will be the last expansion for the brewery as it continues to reach new markets. The ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NE: Nebraska brewers asking for new regulations for craft breweries
Caleb Pollard had spent 10 years working in economic development, but only after he opened a brewery he discovered that there were inspections to pass, state and federal licenses to obtain, and excise taxes to pay — some of the highest in the region, Omaha World-Herald reported on November 25.

And to sell beer to a restaurant or bar, he and his partners by law must go through a distributor, even if the bar is just a few blocks from his Ord, NE, brewery. The closest distributor to him is more than 60 miles away.

Technically Nebraska law does allow Pollard to wheel a keg of beer from his brewery, Scratchtown Brewing Co., to a bar down the street. But a distributor would still have to handle the paperwork, and Pollard would still have to pay a fee. He estimates that increases the cost by 20 to 30 percent.

“We have all these politicians that talk about how much they want small businesses to start in the United States, and they do nothing to help us get started,” said Pollard, who is also the president of the Nebraska Craft Brewers Guild.

Nebraska is in the midst of a beer renaissance. The state has around ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: New brewery coming to Livingston
Much like the winds barreling down the Yellowstone Plateau through the Paradise Valley, Montana’s craft beer industry has only gathered momentum as its members have now grown to 47 with a brewery slated to open in Livingston next summer by Brice and LaNette Jones, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported on November 26.

They’re set to take over the lease on February 1 and have the brewery ready for production by May 2014. The opening will be the culmination of two years of research and work by the two.

Brice Jones has homebrewed off and on over the years, and finally he decided to start a brewery. After settling on a location, the name fell into place. The brewery is named for the katabatic winds that occasionally blow so strongly through the Paradise Valley that it forces Interstate 90 to close. Katabatic winds are downslope winds created when air cools and becomes denser. Gravity then takes over as the heavier air rushes downhill, in this case through the Paradise Valley.

The brewery is planned for a 10-barrel brewing system that will feature about five regular beers and four rotating brews. They’re also offering 100 mugs and 50 steins at $250 and $900, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: Lewis & Clark Brewery to expand
The Lewis & Clark Brewery in Helena, MT is hoping to acquire a city beer license in order to continue growing. The brewery is fast approaching its 10,000 barrel limit, which would require the business to close its tap room, according to KXLH Helena News of November 26.

Owner Max Pigman says since sales of the Helena beer have expanded into other cities the brewery needs to keep up with demand for their product; therefore they will ask the city for a conditional use permit in order to comply with city ordinance.

The change will also allow the brewery to address parking issues.

"We've acquired a property one block to the west of us called the brewery annex and it will have over 100 parking spots plus it gives us the opportunity to store over 1 million empty cans. And the cans have really been a driver of our business as we continue to grow and expand throughout the state of Montana," said Pigman.

The Lewis & Clark Brewery is one of the fastest-growing craft brewers in Montana with more than 50% growth in the last year; they've gone from four employees to 25. They currently distribute their beers in Helena, Butte, Great Falls, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Mark Twain Brewing Company plans to open this summer
Bill Martin hopes that by next summer the old Murphy Motors building in Hannibal, MO will be the home of Northeast Missouri’s newest brew. The Hannibal City Council sold the building to Martin and his partners for $225,000 in February. Since then, Martin and his son Wes, his brother and his nephew have talked paint, fencing and flooring in hopes that eventually they can focus on wheat and barley, Quincy Herald Whig reported on November 25.

Martin already has replaced broken windows with period glass, leveled a slant in the floor and brought the historic building nearly to its shell. From that shell, the space is being designed for visibility. Large windows and a broad patio look out over the downtown skyline and Hannibal’s riverfront. Glass walls will separate the restaurant crowd from the ving tanks and brewmaster. The Martins want customers to see as much of the beer-making process as possible.

They had originally hoped to open in time for the summer tourist season. But Martin said revamping the building and developing a workable floor plan have taken longer than expected.

While neither Bill nor Wes Martin has ever produced beer at this scale before, Bill Martin said he’s active ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Ei8ht Ball Brewing Company opens November 23
Ei8ht Ball Brewing Co., the much-anticipated brewery in Bellevue, KY, officially opens to the public on November 23 according to Cincinnati.com.

Mitch Dougherty, an award-winning brewmaster who has worked locally at at Rock Bottom, leads the Ei8ht Ball team, which also includes assistant brewer Andrew Ritterbeck and bar manager James “Peanut” Kahles. Kahles worked at Dilly Cafe in Mariemont for nearly 20 years, as beer buyer and bar manager, and was known for his tasting notes.

So far, they’ve brewed Prodigal Son, an American Pale Ale, and K-Hole, an imperial mocha stout, but that’s just the beginning, Dougherty said. “We hope to have 10, 15, 20 at one time,” he said, noting that most beers will be brewed in 15-barrel batches.

On tap are 42 microbrews, available by the pint or to take home in growlers.

Twenty of Ei8ht Ball’s draft offerings can be sold in 64-ounce growlers using a Pegas system, which injects carbon dioxide into the growler so that beers stay carbonated longer. That means growlers can be stored unopened for six to eight weeks, Gold said. Growlers are filled from the bottom, so they can be filled “to the absolute top,” he said.

The new brewery and tap room is part of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Second Salem Brewery to open in downtown Whitewater
Second Salem Brewery is scheduled to open for the public by the end of December in Whitewater, WI, Gazettextra.com reported on November 22.

It will operate separate from the restaurant after it is up and running in January.

The business partners--three Whitewater businesses owners and a beer historian--started thinking of opening the nano-brewery about a year ago.

Their all share a love of quality craft brews and a hope of revitalizing downtown Whitewater.

The partners are:

-- Christ Christon, owner of Lakefront Pub.

-- Karl Brown, beer historian and UW-Whitewater history professor.

-- Joe Coburn, co-owner of the Coburn Co., a dairy equipment and farm supply provider in Whitewater.

-- Thayer Coburn, co-owner of the Coburn Co.

Joe Coburn said there's a market for a craft brewery in Whitewater, and he's confident the four business partners have what it takes to be successful.

“We have an experienced brewmaster who has opened commercial breweries,” Coburn said. “But then also Christ has operational experience running food service retail operations for almost 15 years.”

The brewery will be equipped to produce eight to 10 kegs of beer a month. The short-term goal is to have four flagship beers on tap by the end of the school year.

Working in the brewery will be Brown, the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Tractor Brewing Company moving to Albuquerque
The owners of Tractor Brewing Co. have recently signed a lease in advance of moving their operations to Albuquerque. While Tractor operates a tap room in Nob Hill, it has always brewed its beer in Los Lunas, Albuquerque Business First reported on November 22.

The new headquarters, which will also feature a tap room, is located just north of downtown. The almost 19,000-square-foot building is about a mile from Marble Brewery’s brewery and tap room.

Tractor Brewmaster David Hargis said federal permitting has been completed and state permits are in progress. He said he’s hoping permitting and construction on a buildout will be completed in time to start moving equipment from Los Lunas in January.

The size of the new space is about 13,000 square feet more than Tractor’s Los Lunas location.

Hargis thinks the location is a good one to attract customers not only from Downtown, but the North Valley and the Westside.

Tractor Brewing has been in business since 1999.

Brewery news USA, CA & AZ: Telegraph Brewing starts distribution throughout Arizona
Telegraph Brewing Company announced on November 26 that their award winning beers are now available in Arizona through Hensley Beverage Company, according to Santa Barbara Independent. “Arizona is where I grew up,” said founder and CEO Brian Thompson, “We are very excited by this expansion.”

Telegraph is shipping both draft and bottled beers to the Grand Canyon State, including allocations of limited-release and seasonal beers in addition to their core, year-round beers like California Ale and White Ale. “All of our limited-release beers are, really and truly, limited in quantity, but we don’t want to ignore the demand in Arizona for beers like our Reserve Wheat Ale, a sour Berlin-style wheat beer, and Rhinoceros, a rye-based barleywine-style ale,” said Telegraph sales manager Trevor Scoggins. “We don’t want to be one of those breweries that hoards all the hard-to-get beers for ourselves!” he added.

Hensley Beverage Company’s director of craft brands, Scott Kirkpatrick, said, “We couldn’t be happier to have added Telegraph to our craft portfolio. Telegraph makes great craft beers like their California Ale and White Ale that anyone can enjoy. They complement those with an amazing line of limited and special-release beers.” Telegraph’s beers are available in both half-barrel (15.5-gallon) and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: New Belgium Brewing releases Snapshot Wheat, new year-round beer
New Belgium Brewing’s 10th year-round beer falls close to the intersection of two growing craft beer trends – sour and session.

The Fort Collins brewery on Monday, November 25 announced the introduction of Snapshot Wheat, an unfiltered wheat beer with a citrusy nose from the Target hops, coriander and grains of paradise, giving way to a sweet malt profile and a flash of tart across the finish, according to a description from the brewery, Denver Post reported.

The beer will be available in just about every package at New Belgium’s disposal – 12-ounce bottles and cans, 22 ounce bottles and drafts in all New Belgium distribution markets.

“This has been a fascinating process,” New Belgium Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert said in a news release. “We are actually blending two beers here – one that is traditionally fermented and one that undergoes a lactobacillus fermentation which creates a subtle tartness. By blending the two, we smooth out the tart and create a very refreshing and sessionable wheat beer.”

Snapshot Wheat is 5 percent alcohol by volume, New Belgium spokesman Bryan Simpson said. Two year-round New Belgium beers are lower in alcohol – Sunshine Wheat and Blue Paddle pilsner, both of which are 4.8 percent ABV, he ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Breckenridge Brewery releases seasonal Christmas Ale
Colorado’s Breckenridge Brewery has brought back its winter seasonal Christmas Ale, made from roasted malts and Mt. Hood and Chinook hops, Shanken News Daily reported on November 25.

Last year, Breckenridge introduced Christmas Ale in 5-liter mini kegs for the first time, and will double production of that format this year, based on strong retail and consumer demand.

Christmas Ale will also be available in 12-ounce bottles, half-barrel kegs and a limited supply of hand-labeled, one-liter gift bottles.

Breckenridge Brewery produces more than 52,000 barrels annually and owns and operates five brewpubs and ale houses in Colorado.

Brewery news USA, CA: Sudwerk launches Cascaderade IPL
Sudwerk Brewing Co. launched its new limited-release Cascaderade India Pale Lager last week, a refreshing beer with a citrusy, West Coast twist. This is the first release in a series of experimental West Coast lagers, and reinforces Sudwerk’s mission to redefine the American lager, Brewbound reported on November 25.

Cascaderade was inspired by the iconic Cascade hop and the hop-forward West Coast beer movement. It’s named for its refreshing blend of pine and citrus hop flavors, and smooth lager finish. “We’re introducing people to a new world of hybrid lagers, in hopes of elevating the lager experience altogether,” said Trent Yackzan, co-owner.

It weighs in at 6.6% ABV, and 50 IBU, making it the hoppiest beer ever bottled by Sudwerk.

The label on the 22-ounce bottle depicts an 1800s map of the Pacific Northwest, detailing the rugged Cascade mountain range. A trail marks the path from the Yakima Valley, WA., the source of its Cascade hops, to Sudwerk Brewing Co. in Davis, CA. The hoppy lager is distributed in 15.5-gallon kegs, 5.16-gallon kegs, and 22-ounce bottles.

Building on two decades of family legacy, Sudwerk Brewing Co.’s next generation is adding innovation to its beer and building its brand as California’s finest craft lager brewery.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Czech craft beer makers doing well at home and looking to export their products
There's an old saying in the Czech Republic that if a Czech's goat dies, he won't pray for another but rather that his neighbour's goat will die too. And so it was in the 1990s when even though many Czechs were weary of the limited choice from the large brewers that had dominated under communism, they spitefully boycotted an upstart called Stanislav Bernard and his new "honest, traditional unpasteurized beer", Business New Europe reported on November 25.

But today Bernard is having the last laugh. He eventually won over the recalcitrant locals to create one of the country's largest independent breweries, and in doing so helped foster an industry that has boomed to the point where Czech craft beer makers are now looking to export their products around the world.

In November, Two Tales, a microbrewery based outside Brno, began bottling what it hopes will fill an obvious gap in markets around the world for Czech craft beers. "No matter where you go in the world, you can say that Czech beer has a great image… but there has been a lack of opportunity for people to buy it – we're the first [Czech microbrewer] to get out there," says ...More info on site

Brewery news Georgia: Beer and spirits expected to record the fastest category growth by 2017
Sales of Georgian alcoholic beverages are expected to grow fast, according to a recent Euromonitor International summary. The main threat to stable growth of the market is a possible delay in the economic recovery in the country, but this is not very likely.
