Brewery news USA: AB InBev concealed plans for price hikes in Group Modelo acquisition, beer drinkers say
A group of beer drinkers asked a California federal court to revive their antitrust suit against Anheuser-Busch InBev’s $20.1 million acquisition of Group Modelo, arguing on December 1 that AB InBev misled the court about future price increases and that plaintiffs are entitled to new discovery, Law 360 reported on December 2.

The plaintiffs claim Constellation Brands Inc., the company that bought Modelo’s US assets to dispel government antitrust concerns, was planning price hikes even as AB InBev’s lawyers said it would be “illogical” to believe Modelo’s prices would rise in tandem with AB InBev’s. The plaintiffs filed a memorandum on December 1 in reply to their motion last month to vacate their claim’s dismissal.

“If defendants had been truthful on the record about price increases, rather than misleading this court and plaintiffs, plaintiffs’ case should have and would have been permitted to proceed,” the memo said.

A California federal judge dismissed the suit in September, ruling that the consumers had failed to offer evidence backing up their assertion that Constellation, which bought Modelo’s US assets to settle an antitrust suit filed by the US Department of Justice, would serve as a "puppet" to the beer giant.

The plaintiffs — a group of nine ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: St. Lawrence Brewing Company plans to start canning
The St. Lawrence Brewing Co. will begin canning its beer next month, placing its product on store shelves as well as on tap, Watertown Daily Times reported on December 1.

The brewery began distributing its beer in June, and its tasting room opened in August. It since has signed with three distributors that are selling the beer to bars across the north country and the state of New York, owner Kenneth M. Hebb said.

The biggest focus now is on creating loyalty among the brewery’s existing customers while continuing to get the product into as many bars as possible.

“We’re just trying to build the volume among those places and getting them into other places,” Hebb said.

The brewery will hire We Can Mobile Canning, Danville, PA, to handle the job. According to Hebb, several area stores already plan to carry the beer, and distributors will stock it in locations outside the north country.

Traditionally, canning has been seen as the realm of cheap, mass-produced beer, with craft brews belonging in bottles. Hebb said he expects that will change in coming years.

“Cans are a far superior product. Yes, the can itself is cheaper than a bottle, but it’s also lighter, it costs less money to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME & FL: Shipyard Brewing Company preparing for expansion in Clearwater
Maine’s Shipyard Brewing Company had faith in the Florida craft beer market before there was a good reason.

Owner Fred Forsley first brought his brew to the state in the 1990s, well before a new microbrewery was opening up nearly every month. Back then, Florida was known as a “craft beer wasteland,” Tbo.com reported on November 30.

The brewery now is preparing for a big expansion of its Sea Dog Brewing Co. pub and restaurant in Clearwater, which opened in February.

The company plans to add a full 20-barrel brewing system here, its only major production site in Florida, as it looks to broaden statewide distribution.

The decision by a national craft beer brand that sells in 33 states to grow its operations here is another testament to the Tampa Bay area’s emergence as one of Florida’s brew capitals.

It may also be a sign that the state is overcoming its bad rap as a land of bland mass-market beverages. For years, Florida beer distributors refused to carry microbrews.

“There was a time when they thought variety was Bud Light, Miller Light, Coors Light,” said Forsley.

“I think Florida 5 to 10 years from now will be one of the largest per-capita microbrewing states in the country.”

Brewery news USA, FL: Swamp Head Brewery expanding
Swamp Head Brewery is taking advantage of the chance that its building may be demolished for an interstate overpass to build a new brewery and tasting room next year that doubles space for the growing craft beer maker, Gainesville Sun reported on December 3.

“I view it as a blessing in disguise,” said owner Luke Kemper. “We are cramped here. This just put the fire to our feet to get going.”

Since opening in 2009, Swamp Head has ridden the wave of interest in craft beer. That first year, the company sold 700 barrels — 31 gallons each — to bars and restaurants in Gainesville, Ocala and Cedar Key. This year, Kemper said they are on track to sell more than 6,000 barrels statewide under brands such as Stump Knocker, Big Nose, Midnight Oil, Cottonmouth and Wild Night.

Kemper started the business with head brewer Craig Birkmaier and now has 18 employees between production and the tasting room. Birkmaier still serves as a consultant while Nick Dunn and Dan Wade handle brewing duties.

Construction is scheduled to start in April 2014 and finish in September.

The new building will include a tasting room with a large outdoor deck and more parking.

Kemper also hopes to add ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: La Grange Resident to open Imperial Oak Brewing in Willow Springs
La Grange resident Grant Hamilton and Brookfield brewer Brett Semenske are working together to open Imperial Oak Brewing, a new commercial brewery, in Willow Springs in 2014, the Doings La Grange reported on December 3.

Imperial Oak Brewing began construction this week.

This is what the company owners say, “While we've been planning and doing everything else involved in starting a brewery we have managed to make a few beers. We've obtained two 15 gallon whiskey barrels. The first, a Rye Whiskey Barrel from FEW Spirts was used to age an Imperial Red Ale. The Red aged for about 3 months before it was kegged and a Milk Stout was added for the second turn. The second barrel, a Bourbon Barrel from Journeyman Distillery, is currently holding a Russian Imperial Stout.”

Brewery news USA, OR: Breakside Brewery launching first bottled seasonal
Portland-based Breakside Brewery is launching its first bottled seasonal with the rollout of Big Country, a new, limited edition, Shanken News Daily reported on December 2.

Billed as a winter ale, Big Country is inspired by traditional German starkbiers and weinnachtbiers and features notes of orange, cocoa, candied fruit and toast.

The 7.8%-abv entry is currently available through February 1, in 22-ounce bottles and on draft throughout the Oregon, Washington and Idaho markets, as well as in British Columbia.

Big Country joins Breakside’s existing 22-ounce bottled offerings, which include its Pilsner, IPA, Alan From The Wood and Wanderlust IPA expressions.

Brewery news USA, CO: Avery Brewing releasing Mephistopheles’ Stout
Boulder’s Avery Brewing is set to bring back its Mephistopheles’ Stout label, as well as launch a pair of new offerings this winter season, Shanken News Daily reported on December 2.

Rolling out in 12-ounce bottles on December 13, Mephistopheles Stout—originally an installment in Avery’s “The Demons of Ale” series — is made with Magnum and Sterling hops and characterized by chocolate, fruit and espresso notes.

Also available in mid-December is The Maharaja, which is an Imperial IPA and the brewer’s latest entry in its “Dictator” series. Available in 22-ounce bombers, the new IPA will be followed in January by six-pack bottles and cases of New World Porter, billed as a dry-hopped, traditional black Porter.

Along with the new and returning entries, Avery Brewing produces around 20 year-round and seasonal brews, including its flagship India Pale Ale, White Rascal, Ellie’s Brown Ale, Out of Bounds Stout and Joe’s Premium American Pilsner labels.

Brewery news USA, NY: Ithaca Beer Company releases Excelsior! Anniversary Sixteen
Ithaca Beer Co. is pleased to announce the release of Excelsior! Anniversary Sixteen on Wednesday December 4, 2013. Brewed with local wildflower honey, Sixteen is a Belgian inspired farmhouse ale dark as night yet beaming with rich flavours, Brewbound reported on December 3.

Ithaca Beer will continue the celebration with a Sixteen Tasting at the Ithaca Coffee Company and the Ithaca Ale House on December 5th.

As per tradition, Ithaca Beer releases its Excelsior! Anniversary beer one year in advance of the anniversary itself. December 4th marks 15 years of brewing at Ithaca Beer.

Over the last 15 years, Ithaca Beer has grown from a very small microbrewery with only local delivery to a 20,000-barrel (and growing) brewery distributing beer all over New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, Connecticut and very soon, District of Columbia and parts of Virginia and Maryland. In October 2012, Ithaca Beer opened doors to a brand new brewery, Taproom and beer garden. More expansion in is the works for early 2014, when Ithaca Beer plans to increase fermentation capacity upward 75%.

Brewery news USA, CA: Beachwood Brewing set to release Tovarish Russian Imperial Espresso Stout before 2014
Beachwood Brewing is set to release its last seasonal beer of the year – Tovarish Russian Imperial Espresso Stout – on December 27, 2013, Brewbound reported on December 3.

Tovarish is a bold Russian imperial stout brewed with a base of British Maris Otter barley, heaping amounts of roasted barley, and specialty malts. “Tovarish is a remarkably rich and complex beer,” says Brewmaster & Co-owner Julian Shrago. It is finished with a touch of black-strap molasses along with a custom roasted coffee blend by Portola Coffee Lab in Costa Mesa, CA. “Savor the layers of roast, coffee, and dark fruits with every sip,” continues Shrago.

“We are excited to be releasing Tovarish again, it was the first beer we bottled and it’s the perfect brew for this time of year,” says Beachwood’s Co-owner Gabriel Gordon. Beachwood will be celebrating the release of Tovarish with a classic Russian fete, borscht and all. The December 27th dinner will include a fine selection of Russian inspired dishes and desserts.

Tovarish will be sold in 22 oz. bottles at finer craft beer retailers across Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. The brew will also be available on draft at both Beachwood BBQ locations.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Lighthouse Brewing to release Desolation Imperial Oyster Stout
Lighthouse Brewing has announced the release of a new limited edition beer that will be joining the customary Lighthouse Chocolate Porter on shelves this winter, Canadian Beer News reported on November 29.

Desolation Imperial Oyster Stout is a 9.3% stout made with a blend of 10 malts and oysters farmed by Okeover Organic Oysters in Okeover Inlet, Desolation Sound.

Desolation Imperial Oyster Stout was previewed at a couple of events earlier this month, and will be officially released early December. It will be available in a limited run in 650 ml bottles at select liquor stores in BC and the Lighthouse retail store.

Brewery news Canada, NS: Propeller Brewing releases winter seasonal, Russian Imperial Stout
Propeller Brewing has announced the return of its always anticipated winter seasonal, which is back for its 8th year, Canadian Beer News reported on December 3.

Revolution Russian Imperial Stout is described as follows:

Propeller brews this unique ale true to its traditional roots; in the 18th century the English sent their brews via the Baltic Sea to the court of the Czars. To reduce the risk of spoilage Russian Imperial Stout was brewed to very high gravities and allowed to ferment on the long voyage.

The result: A dark, strong and bracing brew. Propeller’s version weighs in at eight percent alcohol by volume and boasts a deep, opaque black colour. It has tremendous body and mouth feel, with intense hop bitterness, roasted malt and dark fruit notes.

Revolution is available now at select NSLC outlets and private liquor stores in Nova Scotia, and at the Propeller retail stores in Halifax and Dartmouth.

Barley news UK: Winter barley planting completed as at the end of November
Conditions in autumn 2013 were ideal for timely drilling and establishment of winter crops in the UK, reversing the swing to spring cropping for harvest 2013, ADAS reported on November 27.

Winter barley planting was complete as at the end of November.

Drilling of winter barley progressed largely unhindered, with most drilled within the optimum window during October, and all by the end of November. Crops established well and most are now tillering. Mild conditions until early November allowed aphids to migrate into crops and foliar insecticide were required for early sown crops or those drilled without seed treatment. Disease levels remained low during autumn, but mildew is becoming common on susceptible varieties, and rhynchosporium and net botch are present at low levels.

Brewery news Belarus: Beer output declines in October
Brewers in Belarus produced a total of 243 thousand hl of beer in October, versus 316 thousand the previous month, Agro Perspektiva reported on November 30.

Output declined by 10.2% versus October 2012, it is reported.

In January – October this year, the nation’s beer production amounted to 3.57 mln hl.

Barley news World: Cargill hires new M&A business head aiming at expansion in Asia
Cargill has hired Mumtaz Kazmi, previously the mergers and acquisitions head for Credit Suisse in the Middle East, to help the agribusiness firm expand in Asia, Trade Arabia reported on December 2 citing two banking sources aware of the matter.

Cargill is one of the world's largest privately held corporations and a leading commodities trader. Like other large US-based agribusiness companies, it has been stepping up acquisitions in resource-rich and fast-growing emerging markets in recent months, seeking to diversify away from the US.

Kazmi, who worked at Credit Suisse for more than a decade before leaving the firm in late 2012, has been appointed as Cargill's strategy and business development manager for Asia Pacific, a role which includes leading M&A efforts for Cargill in the region, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He will be based in Singapore and his main focus will be to seek acquisitions in South-East Asia, the sources said.

Cargill expects its acquisition of Joe White Maltings in Australia to be completed by the end of the year, it said in October.

The commodity trader also purchased full ownership of the Prairie Malt joint venture in Saskatchewan and acquired a shrimp feed manufacturer in Thailand.

Kazmi led the regional M&A business for the ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Germans want beer purity law to be recognized as world heritage
German brewers want their famed beer purity laws to be given an official seal of approval as world heritage, Irish Independent reported on December 2.

The German Brewers' Federation said it has applied to Unesco, the United Nations' cultural agency, to have the purity law - the "Reinheitsgebot" - recognised as a piece of the world's "intangible heritage."

The purity law dates back to 1516 and allows nothing but water, barley malt, hops and yeast for brewing. Germany boasts around 1,300 breweries and 5,000 different beers.

If it wins a place on the Unesco list, the purity law will find itself in diverse company that includes the Argentine tango, the Spanish flamenco, the French gastronomic meal and Turkey's Kirkpinar oil-wrestling festival.

Brewery news Romania: SABMiller names new head for Ursus Breweries
