Canada: Miller Brewing and Molson Coors delay court proceedings on disputed brand agreement
|
Miller Brewing Company (MBC), SABMiller's Canadian unit, and Molson Coors have successfully delayed a court showdown between the two in a bid to reach a settlement.
The case centres on MBC's attempt to cancel Molson Coors' contract to handle its brands, including Miller Genuine Draft, in Canada. However, in June, Molson obtained a temporary injunction to block MBC ending the tie-up, after filing a lawsuit earlier in the year.
Court proceedings over the disputed agreement were due to begin in Toronto on December 9. However, MBC said, along with Molson Coors Canada it had “mutually sought and obtained an adjournment of the trial...in order to pursue settlement negotiations”.
MBC's statement added: “Miller Brewing Company remains confident in its position, but views the opportunity to discuss settlement as a positive development.”
In a statement to the media, Molson Coors said: “This is a matter before the courts, and we do not comment on pending litigation. We are hopeful that there will be a positive outcome and look forward to moving forward with our business upon the ruling. Molson Coors Canada represents a number of great import brands and is proud of the success Miller brands have achieved in Canada under our

Canada, AB: Alberta craft brewers applaud lifting regulation that required brewers to produce 500,000 litres/year in order to sell commercially
|
Micro-brewers in Alberta are rejoicing the province's decision to drop a minimum requirement for producing beer.
The move is expected to help small companies get their product to market and compete with the dynamic micro-brewery cultures in provinces like British Columbia. According to Statistics Canada, the sale of goods made by the Canadian brewing industry has increased by more than 15 per cent over the past 13 years — and small brewers are eager to enter that market, CBC.ca reported on December 6.
"It's amazing," said Geoff Switzer, who makes beer with a group of friends in Red Deer. "It's always been a huge stumbling block for Alberta, like with the way the explosion of craft beer breweries in BC has gone."
Numbers released earlier this year by Statistics Canada suggest Alberta is leading the country in beer sales, with a year-over-year increase of seven per cent.
However, the province had for years maintained that a brewery needs to produce a minimum of 500,000 litres per year in order to be able to sell commercially.
Those in the industry say the changes will help grow business and provide what consumers want.
"It's great for consumers and it's great for local business so all in all

USA, PA: Victory Brewing Company expanding its distribution footprint
|
Pennsylvania’s Victory Brewing Co. has added three new states to its distribution footprint. Starting in January, Victory’s portfolio will be available across Arizona via Hensley Beverage Co., Idaho via C. Stein Distributing and Kentucky via both Heidelberg Distributing Co. and River City Distributing, Shanken News Daily reported on December 10.
The new markets bring Victory’s total reach to 34 states and Washington, D.C. Concurrently, the craft brewer has also realigned and expanded its distribution partnerships in Oregon – where Victory is now handled by Bigfoot Beverage Distributors, General Distributors and Summit Beverage – as well as in Washington state, where Victory has linked with C. Stein Distribution, Odom Corp., Marine View Beverage and Sound Beverages.
Victory Brewing – which offers around 14 core, year-round entries, as well as a variety of seasonals and specialty brews – produces the HopDevil India Pale Ale, Golden Monkey, Prima Pils and Headwaters Pale Ale labels, among others.

USA, CA: Mission Brewery increases staff and production to meet growing demand for its beers
|
Mission Brewery’s 32-ounce “cannons” of Shipwrecked Double IPA and El Conquistador Extra Pale Ale are now in seven new states, Brewbound.com reported on December 6.
“I guess it’s true: Americans like big cans,” says Martin Saylor, Mission Brewery’s national-sales director. “The quarts have been a hit for us and now our distributors in our other states want to get their hands on them.”
Mission released the pioneering cans in early October in California and Colorado. The cans are now joining Mission’s bottled and draft beers in establishments and stores in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida.
The first quart cans ever used by a US microbrewery, the cans have spurred some hefty growth on Mission’s home turf.
“Our California sales for the past three months,” says Mission Brewery founder Dan Selis, “are up nearly 300% when compared to last year.”
To help meet this increased demand for its beers, Mission has increased its production and staff.
The downtown San Diego microbrewer has boosted its production staff by 40%, from 10 fulltime production staffers to 14.
Mission has also increased its brewing production by 40%. The brewery now runs 14 brewing shifts each week, up from a schedule of 10 brews each week.

USA, AZ: SanTan Brewing Company to expand distribution
|
Chandler-based SanTan Brewing Co. plans to expand distribution of its beers to neighboring states and has hired a business development manager to lead those efforts, Phoenix Business Journal reported on December 10.
Arizona’s second-largest craft brewery has its sights set on California, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas to distribute brews such as Devil’s Ale and HopShock IPA.
SanTan has hired a craft beer veteran, Wendy Weathers, as its national business development manager, to put those expansion plans into action.
Weathers brings a wealth of experience in craft beer. She worked her way up from part-time bookkeeper to national sales director at Longmont, Colorado-based Oskar Blues Brewery.
“Wendy’s passion for craft beer and accomplishments at Oskar Blues are two of the many traits that complement the culture of SanTan Brewing,” SanTan owner and head brewer Anthony Canecchia said.
The brewery plans to have distribution deals in place for these other southwest markets by the end of the first quarter of 2014.
Such expansion also will necessitate additional hiring, though specific numbers are not yet determined.
“2014 will definitely bring a number of hiring opportunities including brewers and sales staff,” Canecchia said.
This year, the Chandler-based craft brewery opened a new $6 million, 35,000-square-foot brewing facility down the road

USA, CO: Avery Brewing Company rereleases Mephistopheles’ Stout
|
Mephistopheles’ Stout is back just in time for Christmas. The first shipments of this year’s Mephistopheles, Batch No. 9, are leaving the Avery Brewing Company this week and should hit shelves and taps at select locations around the country by Friday, December 13, according to Brewbound.
First brewed in 2005, Mephistopheles was the third installment of the Demons of Ale series. After creating The Beast Grand Cru and Samael’s Oak-Aged Ale, Adam Avery decided he wanted the third demon to be a massive stout unlike any other. One of the most distinguishing ingredients is the beer’s Westmalle Belgian yeast strain, which produces layers of esters and phenols that create much of the beer’s complex flavor. The grist bill is focused mainly on roasted and black malts making it dark and rich. There is also a small amount of Special B, a specialty malt, added for a touch of raisin-like sweetness. The result is a massive and complex stout with notes of vine-ripened grapes, anise, bitter chocolate and an espresso-like finish.
“For me this is one of the most diverse dessert beers out there,” said Adam Avery, the brewery’s president, CEO and brewmaster. “It can pair with almost any dessert. It’s perfect

USA, PA: Snitz Creek Brewery opening in Lebanon
|
Joshua Schucker, the head brewer at the soon-to-open Snitz Creek Brewery in Lebanon, began brewing first batch of beer on December 5. It will be the first batch of commercially brewed beer in Lebanon County since the Lebanon Valley Brewing Company ceased operating in 1959, Lebanon Daily News reported on December 8.
"It's exciting," Schucker said. "I think it's something the area needs."
Schucker, who has been homebrewing for five or six years, has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Lebanon Valley College. He worked at a lab in Harrisburg for about 16 years, testing drinking water and soil.
"Brewing beer is basically a combination of chemistry and microbiology," he said. "It's not viewed that way because it's beer, but the process is chemistry, so yes, it does translate."
Schucker, a Newmanstown resident, has been working full-time at Snitz Creek since the beginning of November. He said using his degree to make beer is much more fun that analyzing water and dirt.
"This is the best usage of science that I think mankind has ever come up with," he said.
When homebrewing, Schucker normally brewed 5-gallon batches and said he has never operated a system as large as the one at Snitz Creek. Moving from 5-gallon

USA, TX: Alamo Beer to begin work on new brewery in San Antonio
|
Alamo Beer Co. is breaking ground to build the largest craft brewery in San Antonio. The $8 million project will be constructed only minutes from the famous Texas shrine for which the company is named, San Antonio Business Journal reported on December 6.
Eugene Simor, founder and CEO of Alamo Beer, says the project is slated to be completed by the fall of 2014.
The ground-breaking comes roughly six months after Texas lawmakers approved new legislation expected to create more economic opportunities for the state’s craft beer industry.
Simor says Texas brewers were hamstrung under previous laws. The new legislation opens up new revenue opportunities, allowing companies such as Alamo to now sell beers on premise.
“Texas was at a disadvantage compared to other states,” says Simor about previous restrictions. “Now, Alamo Beer Co. should be able to grow at a faster rate with the additional income that will be generated...”

USA, MT: Mighty Mo Brewing Company opens in Great Falls

The Mighty Mo Brewing Company opened for business in Great Falls on December 6.
Owners Seth Swingley and Casey Kingsland say it took years to prepare for the opening and overcoming the financial hurdles were the hardest part, and they are glad to finally be open.
They also say they feel their location makes their business unique.
Seth Swingley said that the downtown atmosphere gives the Mighty Mo a different feel than the other two breweries in Great Falls.
Named after the nearby Missouri River, Mighty Mo plans to offer five flagship beers (ESB, Scotch, IPA, Porter and Cream Ale).

Australia: Lion launches A$60 million Little Creatures brewery
|
Lion officially launched its new A$60 million Little Creatures brewery and hospitality venue in Geelong on December 9 ahead of its official opening on December 10.
Little Creatures announced plans to develop the 11-hectare site, which was once a 1920s art-deco textile mill, in early 2012 - just months before the publicly-listed company was acquired by Lion, according to the Shout.
The Geelong brewery will produce 1.25 million cartons of packaged beer in its first year of operation and has already started servicing its primary markets along the east coast of Australia.
This is the third Little Creatures brewery and will more than double total brewing capacity, alongside the existing breweries in Fremantle, and the Healesville site also in regional Victoria, which creates the boutique White Rabbit beer and Pipsqueak cider products also within the Little Creatures portfolio.
“Little Creatures is one of Australia’s most popular craft beers, and our investment in this major new brewery at Geelong will allow us to meet the growing demand for the Little Creatures portfolio of beers now, and into the future,” said Lion CEO, Stuart Irvine.
“Importantly, we’ll be able to produce beer closest to where our future growth will come from – the eastern states. Beer

Australia: Coopers opens A$16.5 mln bottling line as part of expansion
|
Beer brand Coopers has opened its second bottling line, a A$16.5 million investment which is expected to increase flexibility in the brewery and prompt sales growth.
Officially opened on at Coopers’ Regency Park brewery on 6 December by the Governor of South Australia, the line is part of a broader A$20 million capital expansion program undertaken by the brewery this year, Manufacturers' Monthly reported on December 9.
The launch was also attended by the chief executive officer of German packaging engineering firm, KHS, which supplied the equipment.
Managing director of Coopers, Dr Tim Cooper, said: “Having a second bottling line will reduce down-time and provide Coopers with the additional capacity it requires to handle increasing demand.
“Our staff and contractors have worked exceptionally hard to complete the installation and have the line up and running in time for the Christmas and the summer season.”
The new line has a capacity of 1,200 bottles a minute and is being dedicated to Coopers’ traditional products including Pale Ale, Sparkling Ale, Mild Ale and Stout, which make up more than 70 percent of bottle volume.
The existing bottling line will be used for the other beers produced at Coopers, including the International brands Sapporo and Carlsberg, as well as

EU & USA: EU brewers intend to negotiate beer tax removal through TTIP
|
European brewers last week (4 December) urged EU negotiators to put a removal of taxes on European brewers, from which their American competitors are exempt, on the table in the free-trade negotiations with the US.
In the EU, small brewers have a reduced excise tax rate. This tax rate also applies to small US brewers importing to the EU, whereas the equivalent small brewer tax relief in the US only applies to domestically-produced beer, EurActiv reported on December 9.
This puts EU brewers exporting to the US at an important disadvantage, Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said at a conference in Brussels.
“If you are an EU small brewer, you get nothing when you go to the US,” Simmonds said, adding that she would like to see the EU put an emphasis on the issue as part of the ongoing negotiations of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).
“This is a very good example where industry needs to help us to make that case stronger in the discussions,” said Salvatore D’Acunto, the head of unit of the Commission's food and health care industries department.
“So we are absolutely open to take that on board, and to open the

UK: Eight new barley varieties added to the UK’s Recommended List
|
Eight new barley varieties are added to the UK’s Recommended List, three winter types and five spring, Farmers’ Weekly reported on December 7.
Tower looks the most interesting of the new winter barley varieties and could prove to be a useful partner to last year’s high yielding newcomer Glacier.
The new variety comes from the same breeder KWS as Glacier, and both could become big varieties as the winter barley market consolidates towards feed rather than malting types.
“Tower will add more choice to the feed market and will probably do well in the west with its disease resistance profile,” says David Leaper of Openfield.
The arrival of Glacier last year represented a big step up in yield over established variety Cassia, again from KWS, and new variety Tower will provide another high-output option.
Barry Barker of Agrii says that Glacier has already established itself in the market, taking ground from Cassia last year and he expects it to consolidate its leading position next season.
“In my opinion, Glacier has the edge on Tower as a variety, but there is very little to separate them on paper. I would expect them to take a third of the winter barley area between both of them,” he says.

Singapore: Beer in Singapore is the most expensive in Asia
|
Singapore is not a cheap place to live. Among the findings of a new cost of living survey from international human resources consulting firm ECA is that the small, wealthy city-state is now the world’s 30th most expensive city for expatriates, up one place from last year. It’s the 9th most expensive city in Asia, with notoriously expensive Hong Kong only now slightly more expensive.
But beer drinkers who live in or visit the wealthy city-state are likely to fixate on another data point: Singapore has Asia’s most expensive beer, Quartz reported on December 6.
The survey notes that a typical brew at a bar in Singapore costs a whopping $13.47. That’s 45% more than a beer in Beijing, which is the world’s 15th most expensive city, and 39% higher than one in Tokyo, which is the 10th most expensive place for foreigners. Even Hong Kong, with its similar overall cost of living, has comparatively inexpensive beer, at $9.18—a difference of $4.29 per bottle. Indeed, other goods in Singapore, like milk, eggs, and bread, are similarly priced or markedly cheaper in Singapore than other Asian cities.
While data comparing excise taxes on alcohol between cities are difficult to come by, one clear factor

Belgium & France: Belgian brewers worry over a possible new beer tax hike
|
The association of Belgian brewers is afraid that, for the second time this year, France seems to be targeting beers with a severe tax as rumours of a “pre-mix tax” on tax on residual sugar in beers continue to emerge, Retail Detail reported on December 10.
The increased taxes from earlier this year led to higher prices and “as expected, lower beer consumption rates” in France, according to the Belgian Brewers association: French beer consumption went down 10 % this year. The French government had hoped to get more revenue out of the duties, but due to lower consumption rates (and, therefore, lower income) it is now looking for other possible sources of income.
This new income “has apparently been found in the application of a 2005 law meant to tax the sugar levels in so-called ‘alcopops’ (a mixture of soda and alcohol)”, says Sven Gatz, Belgian Brewers’ CEO: "Up until this point, the law was only used for ‘alcopops’, but it seems the French government is now targeting residual sugar levels in beer. Even though most maltose gets turned into alcohol during the fermentation process, nearly all beers still have a certain amount of residual sugar after fermentation.” Especially the

The Czech Republic & Portugal: Budějovický Budvar wins a dispute over the Budweiser trademark at the Portuguese Commercial Court
|
Czech brewery Budějovický Budvar has won a dispute over the Budweiser trademark with multinational brewing group Anheuser-Busch InBev at the Portuguese Commercial Court, Budvar's spokesman Petr Samec told ČTK on December 11.
The verdict means that Budvar has averted another attack on its Budweiser trademark, Samec said.
AB InBev tried to register four its trademarks containing a Budweiser element in Portugal in 2001 despite the fact that Budějovický Budvar owned several Budweiser trademarks in the country then.
Budvar filed a complaint against AB InBev's plans to register the trademarks at Portugal's trademark office.
The office refused to register the trademarks in 2003, but AB InBev appealed the decision at the Commercial Court which has turned down the appeal now.
”After considering all evidence and circumstances, the court came to a conclusion that Budějovický Budvar owns several registrations with the Budweiser element that are older than AB InBev's trademarks and could be mistaken for them. This means that AB InBev cannot register new trademarks in Portugal,” said Lukáš Lorenc of law office Čermák a spol., which represents Budějovický Budvar in the dispute.
Samec said Budvar has defended its trademark position and prevented AB InBev from entering the Portuguese market.
The company expects to increase exports to Portugal

UK: Adnams to sell out its entire production of whisky just days after the launch
|
Brewer Adnams is set to sell out of its entire production of whisky, just days after it launched the product, This Is Money reported on December 7.
The company, best known for ales such as Broadside and Ghost Ship, began producing spirits three years ago.
Initially just 5,000 bottles of Adnams No.1, a single malt matured in French oak barrels, and Adnams No.2, made from East Anglian barley, wheat and oats matured in American oak, were made. A fifth of that was snapped up within 24 hours of going on sale.
‘We’re all thrilled,’ said chairman Jonathan Adnams. ‘With the benefit of hindsight, we should have perhaps made five times as much, but three years ago it felt like a huge gamble to be going into making spirits at all.’
Adnams, which has been brewing since 1872 and is still owned by families in and around Southwold, Suffolk, invested £650,000 in its Copper House distillery in 2010. It now produces honey vodka, sloe gin, limoncello and absinthe, and its Copper House gin has won a top award.
Next year the firm is to launch a triple sec – an orange-flavour liqueur – and is using local grapes to try to make brandy.

South Korea: Oriental Brewery to introduce an ale brand early in 2014
|
Oriental Brewery (OB), the nation’s leading beer maker, plans to introduce an ale beer brand around January, intensifying competition in the local beer market, Korea Times reported on December 8.
The move came a couple of months after Hite Jinro, Korea’s largest liquor maker, unveiled the first ale beer called Queen’s Ale here in September.
According to industry sources, OB has finished making its contents for the ale beer and started designing the package.
The ale beer market has great growth potential as it currently accounts for only 1 percent of the total beer market here.
OB’s decision came as part of efforts to sustain growth after the decline of its sales due to the rising number of various imported beers.
Lotte Liquor, Lotte’s liquor affiliate mainly making soju and fruit wines, recently jumped into the beer market. The firm is expected to unveil its first beer in January.
