Canada, ON: Brick Brewing registers strong third quarter growth
|
Brick Brewing Co. Limited ("Brick" or the "Company"), the largest Canadian-owned and Canadian-based publicly held brewery in Ontario, released financial results for the third quarter of its 2014 fiscal year on December 12. Net revenues of C$9.6 million for the third quarter represented 27% growth versus the previous year. EBITDA for the third quarter of C$1.9 million was up from C$0.4 million last year.
The Company continued to invest in its core supported brands and achieved double-digit volume improvement in the third quarter. Within the above premium craft portfolio, Waterloo volumes increased 29%. Laker volumes in the quarter improved versus year ago driven by aggressive promotional activity in the second quarter. Additionally, the quarter benefited from strong year-over-year improvement in co-pack production.
Brick Brewing's President and Chief Executive Officer George Croft said, "Overall, we're very pleased with the results we're reporting today. In an environment where the overall beer category volume was largely flat in the third quarter, we've been able to show growth in our supported brands while also significantly improving our EBITDA performance. USA, TX: Karbach Brewing to expand after first year on the market
|
Karbach Brewing is projecting volume of 19,000 barrels this year, up from 8,169 in 2012, the brewer’s first year on the market. To keep pace with growth, the brewery has unveiled a $15 million expansion plan, which includes the construction of a new, 60,000-barrel production facility, Shanken News Daily reported on December 12.
Set to break ground in the second quarter of 2014, the project is expected to be completed in early 2015. According to brewmaster Eric Warner, Karbach is on pace to sell upwards of 29,000 barrels in 2014.
Karbach Brewing currently produces five core offerings—including Hopadillo IPA, Weisse Versa Wheat, Weekend Warrior Pale Ale, Sympathy for the Lager and Rodeo Clown Double IPA—as well as four seasonals, two year-round bombers and a variety of specialties.

USA, WI: Stevens Point Brewery plans $1.5 million expansion
|
The Stevens Point Brewery announced plans for a $1.5 million expansion that will result in new jobs in 2014, Wisconsin Rapids Tribune reported on December 12.
According to a news release of the brewery, the expansion will include three new unitanks for fermenting and aging beer, the purchase of 1,000 new kegs for the brewery’s draft beer business, an upgrade to the bottle filter, and electrical and cooling system upgrades.
The expansion is the company’s fifth since 2010. Earlier this year the brewery completed a $2 million project that increased its annual brewing capacity by 25 percent to 150,000 barrels.
Stevens Point Brewery Operating Partner Joe Martino said that eight new jobs will be added in brewing, packaging, administration and sales.
“Our business continues to grow across the board, from our Point craft beer brands to our new Ciderboys hard cider products launched in 2012,” said Martino. “Our strong sales mean we can keep investing in our brewery to continue to take advantage of opportunities in the marketplace. Being able to create some new jobs at the same time is great. It’s an exciting time for the Stevens Point Brewery and our loyal customers.”

USA, FL: Big Storm Brewery expanding rapidly
|
Big Storm Brewery opened in 2012; at that time its goal was to produce 1,000 barrels of beer a year. Now, the growing brewery is "on track for about 3,500", Tampabay.com reported on December 12.
The brewing company has probably grown "a thousand percent" since brewing began in the summer of 2012, said Bishop.
"We had to grow just to keep up," he said.
Bishop met Yarn, in 2002, while both were students at the University of South Florida. Both really liked beer. Bishop was initially hesitant when Yam suggested they brew beer as a business. Bishop learned the craft and business of beer making as an intern at the Dunedin Brewery on and off for a couple years, but "I had no intentions of trying to open a brewery." But after a while, Bishop agreed.
Now, Bishop is head brewer for Big Storm, which means "what we brew, when we brew (and) anything inside the brewery is my world," he said. Yarn handles sales and distribution and manages vendor relations.
Bishop said, "The plan's to stay in the state of Florida — for now."
A year and a half ago, Big Storm beer was on tap at 15 bars across Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

USA, MI: Harmony Brewing expanding in Grand Rapids
|
Grand Rapids newest brewery won support from the Planning Commission on December 12, according to WZZM.
Harmony Brewing, which operates a small microbrewery in Eastown, plans to open a much larger one.
Barry VanDyke of Harmony Brewing said a name and concept for the brewery have yet to be determined, but he hopes to play on the building's history.
"We never anticipated the amount of beer that we actually sell in Harmony," said Vandyke. "It's been such a huge success over the last two years that we literally can't keep up with demand, so we need a second location where we can brew more beer."
He hopes the new brewery will open about a year from now. VanDyke says he's "really excited by the Stockbridge neighborhood."

USA, CO: Denver area beer news digest
|
New Belgium Brewing's 10th year-round beer falls near the intersection of two growing craft beer trends — tart, subtle sours and lower-alcohol, flavorful "session" beers that go down easy.
The rollout of Snapshot Wheat, coming in February, is a bold move for the nation's third-largest independent craft brewery, Denver Post reported on 11 December.
The 5 percent alcohol-by-volume unfiltered wheat beer is actually a blend of two beers — one that is traditionally fermented and another fermented with lactobaccilus, giving it a tart punch.
It sounds an awful lot like a Berliner Weisse, a style that is getting a lot more attention from American craft brewers.
"For us, we were excited to get into something we think could be session-worthy, for sure," said Bryan Simpson, media relations director for the Fort Collins brewery. "We also wanted to play around with the idea of a Belgian influence with the implied tartness or sourness you have" from the lactobaccilus fermentation.
Simpson predicted the lighter sour profile will have wide appeal. The style is refreshing and the sour flavor does not dominate, as it does in New Belgium's beloved La Folie sour brown ale, he said.

USA, MI: A micro brewery pub to open in Alma
|
The Mt. Pleasant Brewing Company will open the “Alma Brewing Company”. If all goes well, owner Jim Holton said he hopes to have it operational in June, the Morning Sun reported on December 11.
“I was walking downtown Alma about a month ago and found a space that was empty,” he said.
Plans then began to form for a spot to sell “artistry style” beer and eventually, wine.
What is likely to take some time is the permit to make and sell beer and wine.
“Liquor Control is the hard part,” he explained. “The last one took nine months to get through.”
Alma City Commissioner Greg Mapes, pointing out that he had been to the manufacturing facility and tap room in Mt. Pleasant, thanked and welcomed Holton to Alma.
The board unanimously passed a resolution supporting his application to the Liquor Control Commission.

USA, CA: Two new craft breweries coming to the San Fernando Valley
|
The craft brewing trend in Los Angeles County has all but ignored a significant metropolitan area: The San Fernando Valley. Never mind that more than 1.75 million people call the Valley home.
Two sets of entrepreneurs are setting out to build new breweries: the MacLeod Ale Brewing Company in Van Nuys and the San Fernando Brewing Company in the city of the same name, LA Weekly reported on December 12.
Ryan Rogers and Vic Chouchanian, San Fernando Brewing Company co-founders grew up in various Valley locales, and the long-time beer enthusiasts initially wanted to open in Northridge, but couldn't find a suitable location. After scoping out 21 different buildings, the partners finally settled on a spot in the City of San Fernando. Rogers say that the city has been receptive to their plans.
Chouchanian and Rogers plan to produce West Coast style craft beers such as IPAs and Irish Reds, and bring back the classic American lager.

USA, MD: Citizens Brewing Company changes its name to Denizens
|
A planned Silver Spring brewery has changed its name after local brewery DC Brau stepped in to defend its branding of a beer with a similar name. Citizens Brewing Company will become Denizens Brewing Company after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from DC Brau, citing the potential for confusion between its beer, "The Citizen," and the new brewery, Washington Post reported on December 12.
"There isn't a brewery named Citizens. We pursued this in good faith," Denizens co-founder Emily Bruno said. "We've invested thousands of dollars. We did not believe there would be any market confusion."
Bruno, along with her co-founders, Julie Verratti and Jeff Ramirez, chose the name because it spoke to the ideals of their brewpub, which they aim to open in May 2014 in Silver Spring. "We wanted to create an environment for all citizens to come in and learn about beer," Bruno said. The brewers say they had no plans to produce a beer called Citizens.

Canada, ON: William Street Beer Company opening early next year
|
The town of Cobourg, Ontario, will soon be home to one of the province’s rapidly increasing number of new craft breweries, with the opening of William Street Beer Co. planned for early 2014, Canadian Beer News reported on December 11.
Founded by Sean Walpole – a long-time homebrewer who spent much of his childhood visiting his grandmother in the small town 60 miles east of Toronto on the shore of Lake Ontario – the 1,250 square foot brewery will offer beer “inspired by the community’s unique balance of agricultural and Great Lake marine heritage.”
Brewing on a 3 barrel system with an expected annual output of 200 barrels, William Street will launch with two flagship brands – Cliff Top Pale Ale and North Shore Blonde – which will be joined by a rotating line-up of seasonal beers and one-offs. All beers will be available in 650 ml bottles at an on-site retail store, as well as on draught at local bars and restaurants.

Canada, ON: Midian Brewing launching in Windsor in 2014
|
The historic Walkerville district of Windsor may also soon be known as the city’s brewery district, as new start-up Midian Brewing is getting set to join Walkerville Brewery in the area next year, Canadian Beer News reported on December 10.
Planned to open in early 2014 in Walkerville, Midian intends to launch with two flagship beers – “a lagered ale fermented at lager temperatures for a clean, smooth finish, and a dark beer crafted using huskless German chocolate malts.” Additional brands including “pilsners, lagers, porters, stouts and limited edition barrel-aged beers” will follow as the brewery gets established.
Once up and running, Midian plans to sell its beer out of an on-site retail store, as well as on draught at select locations in Southern Ontario.

Japan: Suntory to hold off on acquisitions for a year
|
Suntory Beverage & Food Ltd., the Japanese drinks maker that had Asia’s biggest initial public offering in 2013, plans to hold off on acquisitions for a year as it integrates past deals and bolsters existing operations, Bloomberg reported on December 6.
The company will consider issuing stock if its future deal making should exceed an initial budget of 500 billion yen ($4.9 billion), President and Chief Executive Officer Nobuhiro Torii said in an interview in Tokyo on December 5. The company could also sell bonds to raise funds, he said, adding that it has no specific plans so far.
“I don’t think we have enough capacity or ability to pursue another opportunity at this point,” Torii said, referring to acquisitions. “At least I have to take a break for 12 months.” After that, “if we deliver the plan in the next year, then our financial capability will grow.”
The Tokyo-based seller of Orangina soda and Boss coffee cut its profit outlook in November on rising marketing costs to boost domestic sales and Europe’s economic slump. The company, which began trading in July after raising about $4 billion, faces an aging population and competition from larger rival Coca-Cola Co. in the local market.

Japan: Asahi Group to launch a premium version of its Super Dry beer in February

Asahi Group Holdings Ltd will launch a premium version of its Super Dry beer in Japan as a pickup in the economy has drinkers indulging more in upmarket brews even while overall beer consumption is at its lowest in more than two decades, Reuters reported on December 12.
Beer sales have been hit hard by the rise of ready-to-drink cocktails and other alcoholic beverages, as well as an ageing population. Premium beers have defied the trend, however, with rising sales volumes last year that accelerated this year.
Asahi's Dry Premium will launch in Japan next February at a suggested retail price about 15 percent higher than its flagship Super Dry, Japan's best-selling beer. It will initially be available only in the domestic market.
"With 'Abenomics' we have some bright signs in the economic outlook and this is spurring growth in the premium beer market," said Tsuyoshi Morita, Asahi's head of marketing.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's policy mix of fiscal and monetary stimulus has helped fuel a rise in share prices and luxury spending over the past year, while encouraging mass retailers to promote high-end consumer goods such as cashmere sweaters and gourmet coffee.

China & Morocco: Tsingtao studying the possibility of entering the market of Morocco
|
Morocco’s increasing consumption of alcoholic beverages has attracted the interest in Chinese investors. According to a report by Lemag.ma on December 10, Tsingtao Brewery Co. Ltd., China’s second-largest brewery, has sent a commercial mission to Morocco to study the possibilities of entering the market in the nearest future.
The Chinese brewer wants to start selling its products in the country, but also make Morocco its launchpad for the other markets in Africa, it is reported.
According to IWSR (International Wine & Spirit Research), 118 million liters, it is the volume of alcohol consumed in Morocco in 2011.
Beer holds the first place with 68.3% (80.7 million litres) of total consumption, followed by wine accounting for 27.2% (32.1 million litres), and spirits for 4.5% with a volume of almost 5.3 million litres.

The Czech Republic: Brewer Pivovary Lobkowicz Group plans to list on the Czech bourse

Czech beer drinkers have voracious thirst and may soon be able to profit from their traditional habit if a local craft brewer follows through with its newly floated plans to list its stock on the country’s bourse, The Wall Street Journal reported on December 12.
Pivovary Lobkowicz Group AS, which owns seven breweries throughout the central European country of 10 million, on December 12 said it would like to offer its stock to the general public on the Prague Stock Exchange both to raise cash for future development and to boost the group’s profile among beer aficionados.
The company is the country’s fifth-largest brewing group behind three international groups and state-owned Budějovický Budvar AS.
“We’re seeing demand for our shares both from our commercial partners and from our consumers, which have become fond of our beers,” said Zdenek Radil, the group’s general manager.
The Lobkowicz group producers over 70 brews, centered on the world-famous Czech bottom-fermented lager style, also called pilseners, but the portfolio also includes a range of specialty beers such as ales, bocks or wheat beers as well as non-alcoholic drinks.

UK: Demand for artisan beers soars in Britain

In the US, the craft beer market represents 8pc of total beer sales. In Britain, that figure stands at just 0.5pc. But sales of real ale are set to skyrocket next year in the UK. According to figures from Camra, the real ale advocacy group, 187 new breweries launched across the UK over the past 12 months, the Telegraph reported on December 13.
Innis & Gunn has been blazing a trail for UK breweries across the globe. The Edinburgh-based company sold 15 m bottles of its signature oak-aged and rum-cask beers across the UK, Sweden, Canada and the US this year.
“In Canada, we are the number one and number two craft beers in the country, beating Leffe and even Newcastle Brown Ale,” revealed founder Dougal Sharp. “Eighty per cent of our £9.1 mln turnover comes from export.”
The company came about entirely by accident. Sharp was working at family brewery Caledonian when distillery William Grant approached him to create an ale-finished whisky. Caledonian’s beer was used to flavour the whisky casks. Instead of throwing the waste beer away, Grant’s staff took it home.
