USA: Anheuser-Busch invests additional $10 mln in its Williamsburg Brewery
|
Anheuser-Busch is in the process of investing $10 million into its Williamsburg brewery in an effort to enable the brewery to package beer in a variety of can sizes, Williamsburg Yorktown reported on December 16.
This latest investment, announced December 5, is part of more than $39 million that has been invested into the brewery over the past three years.
“Today’s announcement is another demonstration of Anheuser-Busch’s commitment to our brewery, which has been in operation for more than 40 years,” said Rick Shippey, general manager of the Anheuser-Busch Williamsburg brewery, in a news release. “This investment includes the addition of a slim package to one of our existing can lines, which will further enhance our ability to offer new and innovative packages for our consumers.”
In an interview, Shippey expanded on the packaging investment. Currently Anheuser-Busch packages Michelob Ultra in slim cans and puts Budweiser and Bud Light into 8-ounce cans; this new equipment will enable the Williamsburg brewery to participate in that packaging effort. Additionally, it will allow the brewery to experiment with other beverages to see if there is an opportunity to expand its product line.
Whether this investment will lead to additional jobs is not yet clear, but Shippey said

Canada, AB: Wild Rose Brewery’s new production facility begins brewing
|
Calgary’s Wild Rose Brewery marked a new chapter in its 18-year history on December 18, as it turned on the taps at its new С$5 million production facility, Calgary Herald reported on December 17.
The 40,000-square foot building in Foothills Industrial Park is five times larger than the Currie Barracks location where Wild Rose has been making its beer since 2006.
“The brewhouse itself is double the size of the facility over there. With all of the tanks, we’ll be able to brew eight, nine times the volume over the course of the year,” said director of brewery operations Brian Smith. “It’s a major expansion.”
The decision to build a new brewery came in part because of the uncertainty surrounding Wild Rose’s previous location. Earlier this year, Wild Rose was told by its landlord, Canada Lands Company, that its lease would not be renewed beyond February 2014 due to the ongoing redevelopment of the community. That deadline has since been extended to 2015, and Wild Rose is now working with Canada Lands to find a permanent location that may allow it to retain its presence in that neighbourhood.
Still, Wild Rose CEO Bill McKenzie said it was time anyway to move the majority of

USA, PA: Boston Beer Company adding capacity to its Samuel Adams brewery in PA
|
The Boston Beer Co. is investing in new aging and fermentation tanks that will increase production and add jobs at its Samuel Adams brewery in Upper Macungie Township, company officials said this week, Lehighvalleylive.com reported on December 17.
The project, combined with other improvements at the site, accounts for some of the $100 million to $120 million in capital spending Boston Beer estimated for 2013, spokeswoman Jessica Paar said.
"We are continuing to invest in our capability and capacity at the Samuel Adams brewery in the Lehigh Valley. As part of that process, we are adding several tanks that will be used for aging and fermentation," she said in an email.
"This will enable us to increase the capability of our brewery so that we can keep up with the brewing demands as we introduce new, innovative styles like our Barrel Room Collection," Paar continued.
Paar declined to discuss specifics of the project but indicated it will result in new jobs at the facility. Currently, there are 22 Pennsylvania positions advertised on the Samuel Adams website ranging from packaging operator to project engineer.
Township officials said this week that they've heard talk about the possibility of a brewery expansion but that Boston Beer has yet

USA, CO: Upslope Brewing Company re-releasing popular winter seasonal
|
Boulder, Colorado-based Upslope Brewing Company is re-releasing its popular winter seasonal Foreign Style Stout in Colorado, Shanken News Daily reported on December 16.
The 6.9%-abv brew, characterized by a blend of roast flavors and the brewery’s Patagonian hops, is available in six-packs of 12-ounce bottles.
Upslope’s five flagship beers include a Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Brown Ale, Craft Lager and Imperial India Pale Ale.
In September, the brewery expanded distribution of its Pale Ale, India Pale Ale and Craft Lager to select outlets in Texas. The move was made possible by a recent expansion project that increased production by 70% from last year to 9,500 barrels a year.

USA, TN: Jackalope Brewing Company starts canning
|
Jackalope, the local brewery that opened in 2011, has been selling its beer exclusively in kegs to bars and restaurants or serving it on draft at its taproom.
On December 16 co-founder and CEO Bailey Spaulding announced that the company started putting its craft brew in single servings, but instead of bottling six-packs, it's canning them, according to Nashville Scene.
Though many people consider longneck bottles more elegant, aluminum cans are gaining ground among fans of craft beer, for reasons of flavor, economics and environmentalism.
"Cans are a more stable container for your beer,” Spaulding said in a release. “They block light, so the beer won’t ‘skunk’ the way it would in a bottle." Aluminum is also lighter, easier to transport and more desirable in the recycling market than glass.
Jackalope started the canning process on December 16, using the services of Mo and Carl Oekler at Toucan Mobile Canning. The Oeklers bring their mobile system to breweries, producing about 10,000 cans per run. The service helps small breweries start canning without the capital expense of purchasing equipment.
The first Jackalope beer selected for canning is the Thunder Ann American Pale Ale, which will be available soon at craft beer retailers and the Jackalope

USA, PA: Yards Brewing Company expanding rapidly
|
Yards Brewing Company, which was founded in 1994, expanded in August 2008. Yet the craft-beer industry and Yards itself have grown at such a clip that the brewer has now carved out more work area in the landlord’s adjacent space, adding a loading dock, cold-storage, day storage, processing space, a bigger testing lab and space for its first tractor trailer. Yards is housed in old industrial space that more recently was an indoor skateboard park, Philadelphia Business Journal reported on December 13.
There were 2,347 craft breweries nationwide at the end of last year, according to the Brewers Association. While the sector makes up just 6.5 percent of total beer sales, that percentage has grown steadily each year. By volume, craft brewers produced 15 percent more beer in 2012 — and local brewers, including Yards, reflect that growth.
In 2009, Yards’ first full year at the expanded site, it was producing 9,000 barrels a year with 12 employees and generating $2 million in sales.
This year, the brewer expects to produce 32,000 barrels with 50 employees, generating nearly $9 million in sales.
“We’re growing at a rate faster than the national rate,” said Trevor Prichett, chief operating officer. “We’re growing in current markets and

USA, OR: GoodLife Brewing Company Rreleases Yukon Cornelius Festive Winter Beer
|
Adding another beer to its growing lineup of adventurous ales, GoodLife Brewing Company announced the release of Yukon Cornelius Festive Winter Beer, Brewbound.com reported on December 16.
This brown porter is 5.7% ABV and 30 IBU’s, and is brewed with 6 malts and 2 hops, then dry hopped with cinnamon.
Head Brewer/Owner, Curt Plants, said, “This is the first time we have brewed a big batch with spices, and I didn’t want them to be too dominant of flavors.” Yukon Cornelius was “hop burst” with cinnamon and nutmeg, instead of the large amount of hops normally used. Plants said, “The cinnamon comes thru in the aroma, while you taste the nutmeg in the back end. Mixed with the malts and hops, it gives a tasty spicy, chocolate flavor.”
There is limited production this winter, Yukon Cornelius will be sold on draft in Oregon and Washington. The official release party took place Saturday, December 14, 2013.

USA, WA: West Seattle Brewing plans to open next week
|
West Seattle Brewing is still finishing its craft brew pub but as co-owner Drew Locke acknowledged, "It's time to get it open."
They plan to open to the public on Thursday, December 19. The opening will be limited to just a few days a week as they ramp up their production. Two big brewing tanks are ready to go and should begin brewing sometime in the next 30 days, Westseattleherald.com reported December 14.
West Seattle Brewing will open with nine beers to begin with and expand to 18 as they ramp up production.
Kevin Fawcett, co-owner said that opening the business has meant a learning curve. Getting everything to work properly matters more in a business than it does to a home brewer. "People are waiting and you've got to be able to pour them a beer."
The duo have done something unique in the way the beer taps are mounted. They have them mounted directly on the glass of the beer storage area with very short lines to the taps. This means the beer poured is far fresher than beer that might sit in a long tap line. It comes out very cold and with a snap and flavor different from

USA, IL: Generations Brewing Company to open in Freeport
|
Generations Brewing Co., the brainchild of Steven and Mark Winter, might open as soon as Memorial Day in Freeport, IL, Freeport Journal-Standard reported on December 14.
Mark Winter, president and CEO of Winter Construction in Freeport, is shaping plans for the 8,100-square-foot building that will contain a production area, taproom and beer garden. His son, Steven, started brewing craft beers about three years ago, shortly after finishing college, and rose to the role of brewmaster at the Galena Brewing Company.
The Freeport Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the plans for the 20-acre site on November 25.
“The location will make it convenient to move beer in and out of the city,” Steven Winter said. “We are about to begin contract brewing in Galena until our brewery is ready and should have beer available in stores by February.”
The brewery’s main focus will be on distribution with the majority of its beer being sold at grocery stores, bars and restaurants, he said. Mark Winter said that he estimates only 5 percent to 6 percent of revenue coming from patrons drinking beer in the brewery’s taproom with the rest coming from sales elsewhere.
Two of Generations Brewing Co.’s flagship beers will be the Live FreePorter,

USA, LA: Great Raft Brewing launches its flagship craft beers in Shreveport
|
The popularity of craft brewing in the United States is skyrocketing. An estimated 13.2 million barrels of craft beer was produced in 2012.
And last week, a new brewery, Great Raft Brewing launched several craft beers at bars and restaurants throughout Shreveport and Bossier City in preparation for the opening on December 20, according to Shreveport Times.
Each day last week, Andrew Nations and his wife, Lindsay Nations, co-founders of Great Raft Brewing presented their Shreveport-produced beer brands for the public’s consumption.
Great Raft featured three of its flagship beers: Reasonably Corrupt, a black lager, Commotion, an American pale ale, and Southern Drawl, a pale lager.
For the Nations, the launch is a first step along the path to a greater goal of expansion.
“We will stay at 20 accounts for a while to make sure we keep up with demand and see how much beer Shreveport wants to drink,” Andrew Nations said. “In February, we will be canning.”
The entrepreneurs plan to open a tasting room, a place where customers will be able to enjoy beer while watching and learning about the brewing process, in their brewery this week.
“We’re going to open it on December 20,” Lindsay Nations said.

USA, CA: 5 Stones Brewing Company wins inaugural Startup Brewery Challenge
|
The Brewbound Session beer sampling was held on December 5 in San Diego, when a panel of judges tasted products and heard elevator pitches from 10 different startup craft brewery owners, Brewbound.com reported on December 16.
Sponsored by Craft Brew Alliance, the first instalment of the Startup Brewery Challenge gave the companies the opportunity to showcase their brands and business plans in front of a judging panel of expert brewers and industry veterans, as well as an audience of 170 brewing industry professionals.
Seth Weatherly, the founder of 5 Stones Craft Brewing Co., beat out nine other participants with his seasonal release business model and a 6.4 percent ABV ‘Aloha Pina’ golden ale, brewed with fresh pineapple and roasted jalapeno.
Judging the competition were Pete Slosberg, the founder of Pete’s Wicked Ale; Doug Rehberg, the director of brewing operations for CBA; Brady Walen, the Widmer Brothers brand manager; Tom Nickel, the owner of O’Brien’s Pub and Chris Furnari, the editor of Brewbound.com.

USA, NH: Neighborhood Beer Company to be built in Exeter
|
Joe Berwanger filed paperwork to build the Neighborhood Beer Company in Exeter, NH. His plan was approved by the Zoning Board of Adjustment on December 16, Patch reported on December 17.
The establishment would brew German-style ales. There will be a tasting room that serves 4-ounce beer samples and a growler tap that will dispense beer that stays fresh for two weeks, Berwanger said. He also said a restaurant could be added sometime down the road.
It will be Exeter's first brewery.
"We believe in this one location that we have something unique," Berwanger told the board, adding the brewery could draw more businesses to the Epping Road corridor in the western part of town.
ZBA Chair Robert Prior said the plan was "well-prepared."
Berwanger said he wants to open the tasting room before the summer and the entire brewery by the fall.
He said he plans to make his beers available at local restaurants and stores.
Berwanger spent the last few years in Chicago, where he helped revive Baderbräu Brewing Company.

USA, CO: Odell Brewing releases re-branded Runoff Red IPA
|
On January 4th, 2014, Odell Brewing will celebrate the release of Runoff Red IPA. Formerly known simply as “Red Ale,” Runoff is the same recipe with a new name and label and follows Isolation Ale as part of the brewery’s seasonal series of beers, according to the company’s press release of December 13.
“We wanted to give this beer a name, story and label imagery that would reflect the spirit of the season and better coincide with our other seasonal offerings,” said Marketing and Branding Manager, Amanda Johnson-King. “We also felt that Red IPA more accurately described the character of the beer, which is a very hoppy crimson colored ale.”
The name “Runoff” is a nod to the late winter and early springtime snows in Colorado, that generate the precious water so vital to the area and to beer making. The label art also depicts the shoulder season along with a vibrant red alpenglow that mirrors the color of the beer.
Brewed with a complex malt bill, Runoff boasts a hearty backbone and a ruby hue. The brew is dry-hopped with a generous amount of American hops giving the beer a fruity citrus aroma and a kick of grapefruit and pine hop

Belgium: Brussels Court of Appeal decides on Belgian colour mark infringement case
|
The Brussels Court of Appeal recently dealt with an interesting trademark infringement case pertaining to the abstract colour mark blue owned by Belgian beer brewer Alken-Maes. Maes, which is part of the Heineken group, is one of Belgium's oldest breweries. As early as the 1960s, it began marketing its lager under a trade dress using a distinct shade of dark blue, International Law Office reported on December 16.
In 2006 Maes successfully applied for registration of an abstract colour mark, claiming protection for the International Pantone Code 2478C in relation to beers.
Maes sought injunctive relief, relying on, among other things, the infringement of its colour mark which it claimed was well known in part of Benelux. Surveys had shown that over 60% of Belgian consumers attribute the distinct shade of dark blue to beer – in particular, to Maes.
In an October 21, 2013 decision, the Brussels Court of Appeal accepted the validity of the colour mark and upheld the infringement. The verdict did not come as a bolt from the blue, as it confirmed an earlier decision of a lower court, albeit on slightly different grounds.
Regarding the infringement of the mark which Maes based on the enlarged protection offered

Belgium: Orval beer suffers from lack of monks in the abbey
|
Belgium’s famous Orval beer risks losing its Trappist category as there are not enough monks to brew it, L’Express reported on December 17.
In the 1980ies, there were about thirty monks brewing Orval beer in the monastery. However, today the abbey only has 12 Cistercians monks – not enough to ensure the mass production of the brand.
Besides, the volume currently produced lags far behind the demand. The output grew from 40 000 hl in 2000 to 69 000 hl in 2012, but this is almost the capacity limit, the abbey brewery’s site says.
Orval brewery is now considering whether to increase the production by employing workers from outside and thus loose its “Trappist” label, or stabilize or even diminish the production and thus face the risk of complete disappearance, it is reported.

World: SABMiller’s Graham Mackay dies at the age of 64
|
Graham Mackay, the chairman of SABMiller and one of the best-known figures in the global beer industry, died on Wednesday, December 18 from cancer. He was 64, Reuters reported.
Mackay spent 35 years at SABMiller, steering its transformation from an industrial conglomerate to the world's second-largest brewer with annual sales of $34.5 billion and 200 brands including Miller Lite, Peroni and Pilsner Urquell.
He was chief executive from 1999 when the company - then called South African Breweries - listed on the London Stock Exchange, until April this year when he took a medical leave of absence following surgery on a brain tumour.
He recovered enough to resume his duties as chairman in September. His condition suddenly worsened in November, and he took a further leave.
Mackay died peacefully on Wednesday, December 18 morning, the company said, surrounded by his family, which includes three adult sons and three school-age sons.
The board said on December 18 it had appointed acting chairman John Manser as chairman until a long-term successor can be found. Guy Elliott will take Manser's place as a senior independent director.
