USA: Big brewers decrying favoritism for their microbrewery competitors
|
American microbreweries are asking the government to cut their federal excise tax so they can grab more market share from Coors, Budweiser, Corona, Miller and other brands that have become household names, The Coloradoan reported on December 19.
The big beer makers, meanwhile, support proposals that would cut excise taxes for all brewers, regardless of size.
Both sides, which were once united, are polite enough to praise the products made by the other camp but disagree on how to reduce one type of tax that affects the price of beer.
Though neither side’s proposals are likely to advance on their own, both camps want their ideas included in a future overhaul of the U.S. tax code.
Making the case for the nation’s 2,700 microbreweries is the House Small Brewers Caucus, founded in 2007 by Oregon Reps. Pete DeFazio, a Democrat, and Greg Walden, a Republican.
The 123 caucus members get together a couple of times a year to sample a range of handcrafted brews.
But the group is about more than just suds and smiles, DeFazio said in a recent interview. It’s also backing the Small Brew Act introduced in February by its Republican co-chairman, Pennsylvania Rep. Jim Gerlach. Similar measures died in two previous Congresses.

USA, NC: Appalachian Mountain becomes publicly traded craft brewery
|
Appalachian Mountain Brewery (AMB) is pleased to announce, effective immediately, it has closed the acquisition of North Carolina Natural Energy, Inc, (OTC:NCNE), a publicly traded Florida Corporation. Appalachian Mountain Brewery will continue to trade under (OTC:NCNE) until its name and symbol change become effective. Final terms and conditions of the $3,500,000 stock transaction have been completed, Wall Street Journal reported on December 19.
Appalachian Mountain Brewery becoming a publicly traded craft brewery has created an overwhelming positive response from the community it serves as well as industry professionals. Sean Spiegelman, CEO states, "Going public is a strategic move for Appalachian Mountain Brewery to enter into a capital raise to facilitate production of locally made North Carolina Hard Cider, continued expansion of its craft beer lines, adding Barrel Aged Sour Beers, and increasing capacity for canning and bottling to meet the growing demand of its award-winning craft beer."
The recent Jobs Act allows Appalachian Mountain Brewery to offer its shares to qualified investors to participate in the planned expansion adding a second location in Boone, NC. The company is currently evaluating multiple locations which will house tap room and full-scale cannery. AMB is preparing for increased production of its craft beverage line

USA, NH: Exeter Zoning Board of Adjustment approves town’s first-ever brewery
|
The Exeter Zoning Board of Adjustment has unanimously approved granting a special permit to a Stratham businessman allowing him to open the town’s first-ever brewery, Seacoastonline reported on December 18.
The plan to open The Neighborhood Beer Co. won swift approval from the board during a meeting on December 17.
Berwanger told the board that the brewery – which will also feature a tasting room and offer tours to customers – will be located in an area of Exeter where town officials have long hoped for more commercial development.
Berwanger, who with a partner ran a craft brewing company in his hometown of Chicago, said he was seeking to open the brewery in Exeter because he believes in the town.

USA, CO & AL: New Belgium to begin distribution in Alabama
|
New Belgium Brewing will begin distributing beer throughout Alabama on January 27, the Fort Collins-based brewer announced on December 18, according to Northern Colorado Business Report.
Alabama will be New Belgium's 36th state of distribution. Initial offerings will include Fat Tire, Ranger IPA, Spring Blonde (seasonal), Snapshot Wheat, Shift, Trippel and the Lips of Faith series. The rollout will feature 12-ounce and 22-ounce bottles, 12-ounce cans and draft.
New Belgium will partner with four distributors: Supreme Beverage in the northern part of the state, Gulf Distributing in the southwestern area, Allstate Beverage in south central Alabama and Premium Beverage in the state's east-central portion. All are Miller-Coors distributors.
"We interviewed a lot of great wholesalers in the area and we're very excited about where we've landed," said New Belgium's Southeast Regional Sales Director, Jeff Sipes, in a press statement. "We look forward to making new friends, learning new things and contributing to Alabama's thriving beer and food scene."

USA, MI: Ypsilanti
|
After seven and a half years as the Corner Brewery, Arbor Brewing Company's Ypsilanti location is changing its name to Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery, The Ann Arbor News reported on December 18.
Co-owner Rene Greff said the name change was prompted by the burgeoning statewide attention Arbor Brewing Company's beer and brand has been getting.
"We live in Ypsilanti," said Greff. "We know that Ypsi is the kind of community that doesn't want any kind of interloper coming in from Ann Arbor. So when we opened the Corner Brewery seven and a half years ago, we wanted to give it a distinct identity, and I think that has worked well for the community."
But people from outside of southeast Michigan weren't aware that Arbor Brewing Company and Corner Brewery were part of the same company, and that, said Greff, was starting to become a problem.
"We decided it was time to more closely link the Corner Brewery to the Ann Arbor brewpub," said Greff. "I think the biggest thing we're worried about now is not creating confusion in our home market as we try to clear up the confusion statewide."
Greff said a new sign will bear the Arbor Brewing Company name, but "Corner Brewery"

USA, IL: Evanston’s first craft brewery opening tap room
|
The first-ever craft brewery in the Chicago suburb of Evanston is officially going public.
Temperance Beer Company, which just started production this year, opened its tap room on December 19, according to WBEZ.
The brewery’s name is a reference to Evanston’s past. The city was founded as a “dry” community - meaning production and sales of alcoholic beverages were forbidden. In the late 19th century, it became home to the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.
Led by Frances E. Willard, the organization fought for social reforms, such as the eight-hour work day, and tried to stamp out tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.
That history had a huge and lasting impact on Evanston, which only issued its first liquor license in the early 1970s. Plenty of liquor stores and bars have come and gone since then. But even today getting alcohol into Evanston is not easy.
The path to Temperance was first cleared by Paul Hletko, who owns the craft distillery Few Spirits in Evanston. Few just opened in 2011, but Hletko’s products already have won a number of major awards.
In fact, his rye whiskey was just named craft whiskey of the year by Whiskey Advocate magazine. To get there, Hletko had to persuade Evanston officials to change

USA, CO: Snowbank Brewing Company is coming to Fort Collins
|
In November, Travis Robertson of Snowbank Brewing Company signed a seven-year lease for a commercial space in Fort Collins. The 3,200-square-foot space is located just around the corner from Fort Collins Brewery and northeast of Odell Brewing Co., The Coloradoan reported on December 19.
It was reported in June that Robertson and his unnamed business partner were considering bringing a brewery to a residential location in Fort Collins but some residents were concerned about the idea of a brewery near homes.
Robertson and his partner could not be reached for comment on the recent lease. Their representative for the deal, Greg Roeder of Brinkman Partners, said he did not wish to comment.

USA, CO: Odell Brewing and Head for the Hills to re-release Head for the Hills – Colorado Amber Ale
|
Ft. Collins, Colorado mainstays Odell Brewing Company and Head for the Hills have collaborated on a special re-release of “Head for the Hills – Colorado Amber Ale.” The special draft release beer will be available at Head for the Hills’ New Year’s Eve performance on December 31st at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins, CO, according to the Company’s press release of December 19.
Amanda Johnson-King, Odell’s Marketing & Branding Manager mentions, “We’re so excited about our partnership with Head for the Hills! Their music and our beer embody the Colorado spirit of adventure and camaraderie, and being able to combine the two is inspiring and fun!”
“It’s a dream to collaborate on a beer with Odell Brewing,” Mike Chappell from Head for the Hills shares. The pair initially came together earlier in 2013 to partner on the special beer in which the public voted on and selected the custom tap handle artwork, created by Odell. The two re-visited the concept in early December for hands-on brewing experience at Odell on the brewery’s pilot brewing system and brought a film crew to capture the day’s events. Brent Cordle, Odell’s Pilot Brew & Barrel Aging Manager comments “This collaboration beer is

USA, WA: Dick’s Brewing releases 12 Man Pale Ale
|
Dick’s Brewing has launched the 12 Man Pale Ale – “FOR THE FAN” in Draught and 6 pack, 12 oz cans. This new beer from Dick’s Brewing will be distributed throughout the Great Artisan Beverage Distribution network along with all other Dick’s Brewing products. The State of Washington market will be fulfilled first and, as production increases, it will gradually expand throughout the Pacific Northwest, Brewbound reported on December 18.
Norm Johnson, the ex NFL kicker and one of the business partners of 12 Brands, LLC secured the trademark of the 12 Man Pale Ale a couple of years ago. 12 Brands, LLC wanted to develop a beer that any fan in any sport could enjoy, hence the slogan “FOR THE FAN”. Norm Johnson explains, “Over the last couple of years we’ve been trying to figure a way to nationally launch a beer under the 12 Man Pale Ale name and we kept running into road block after road block. We finally met the right people at Dick’s Brewing and Bev-Link, a division of Great Artisan Beverage, and in a matter of a couple of months we were able to get the right agreement, right recipe, the right marketing and the

USA, OR: Ninkasi Brewing Company releases Dawn of the Red Ale
|
Ninkasi Brewing Company announces the release of its Dawn of the Red, an India Red Ale, to store shelves and on-draft January through April 2014, Brewbound reported on December 17.
“I have wanted to make an IRA for a while,” admits Jamie Floyd, founding brewer and co-owner of Ninkasi. “The idea for this beer was to make a super drinkable hoppy beer with a touch of caramel malt to bring some dryness and malt flavor into the finish.”
Ninkasi’s six-member brewing team worked together to make sure this beer possessed the right amount of color without being excessively sweet. “This beer has the bitterness and drinkability of an India Pale Ale and uses some newer hops that create a real juicy flavor profile of mangos, papaya, and pineapple,” says Floyd. “Through our sampling of this beer, it has quickly become a favorite at the brewery; at seven percent ABV, it’s a dangerously tasty beer that leaves the palate ready for more.”
Dawn of the Red will be available on shelves in 22-ounce bottles, in Ninkasi’s 22-ounce Variety 4-Pack, and on-draft January through April.

USA, WA: Silver City Brewing Company announces the release of two beers
|
Silver City Brewing announced on December 18 the impending release of two beers: West Sound IPA and Silver City Imperial Stout. The second beer is one of Silver City’s most-decorated brews, as reported by Seattle Post Intelligencer.
West Sound IPA was created to offer an IPA with a different approach for the Northwest. With a nod to West Coast Style IPA, West Sound IPA offers a dryer, less malt forward approach that is typically representative of a Northwest Style IPA. Of this Brewmaster Don Spencer says “With the West Sound IPA we took a different approach we’ve wanted to do for some time. West Sound IPA presents a dryer finish allowing the layers of hops to shine through with a sweet citrus & tropical fruit character up front that follows with a pleasant & crisp bitterness.”
Silver City Brewery West Sound IPA will make its debut on December 20 at Silver City Brewery Taproom in Bremerton. West Sound IPA will be accompanied by this year’s release of Silver City’s World Beer Cup Gold Medal Winning Imperial Stout. An extremely black beer with massive roasted malt character balanced with assertive hopping from Northwest Chinook hops, fruity esters and a sinister alcohol content. Brewed

UK: Carlsberg and Molson Coors announce increases in their wholesale prices
|
Carlsberg and Molson Coors have become the first of the UK brewers to announce increases in their wholesale prices, with other brands expected to follow, Metro reported on December 18.
This means it could cost 6p extra a pint for pubs which buy draught beers by the barrel – and even more for customers shelling out at the bar.
Simon Clarke, landlord at the Eagle Ale House in Battersea, south London fears this will sound another death knell for pubs, with punters heading to take advantage of supermarket offers instead.
He said: ‘If the pub’s company also wants to make a 50 per cent profit that’s going to be another 6p.
‘And then, if the pub also wanted a 50 per cent profit, you’re looking at a 24p increase on a pint, effectively.
‘It’s putting the pub in a really difficult situation because they just can’t afford to increase their prices that much.’
The decision was blamed on rising production, energy and fuel costs.
Carlsberg – which also owns brands such as Tuborg and Tetley – will bring the changes into effect from January 6.
Its spokesman said: ‘We are fully aware of the challenging market for our customers and have absorbed as much cost as possible to

Italy: AB InBev has to change Budweiser labelling in Italy until February 10
|
A court has given Anheuser-Busch InBev until 10 February to change the labelling for Budweiser to 'Bud' in Italy after another legal tussle with Budejovický Budvar.
Italy's Supreme Court found in favour of the Czech brewer in October, allowing Budvar to start selling its flaghsip lager brand as Budweiser Budvar again in the country. The court ruled that AB InBev must stop selling its brand as Budweiser in Italy.
However, Budvar on December 18 claimed that AB InBev had failed to withdraw Budweiser in the market. As a result, Budvar said it had been forced to ask Milan's Commerical Court to intervene.
“Since our business interests are being severely harmed and Italian consumers are being further deceived, we had to ask the Commercial Court in Milan for help,” Budvar's sales director Robert Chrt said.
In response to Budvar's plea, the Commerical Court has set a 10 February deadline for AB InBev to comply with its ruling.
But in a statement on December 19, AB InBev said it “had already decided to transition to Bud in Italy, but the transition had not yet been completed”.
The Belgium-headquartered brewer added: “AB InBev is pleased with the result of the hearing as the goal
