Brewery news South Korea: New laws finally allow small brewers to expand sales
The smell of fresh paint lingers at the renovated Vaneheim microbrewery in northeast Seoul, a sign of owner Kim Jung Ha’s optimism after a decade of struggling with the economics of South Korea’s lopsided beer market, Bloomberg reported on January 24.

Under revisions to alcohol laws announced by the finance ministry on January 23, house brewers like Kim will be allowed to distribute their beer through other bars and restaurants for the first time, while paying a lower rate of tax. The changes are expected to bring more competition to a $1.3 billion beer market that grew 6 percent in 2013 and is dominated by Hite Jinro Co. and Oriental Brewery Co., re-acquired this week by the world’s biggest beer maker Anheuser-Busch InBev NV.

The changes come as President Park Geun Hye begins her second year in office promising a more “creative” economy that supports small- and medium-sized companies.

“The past 10 years have been a process of bitter learning,” Kim, a 34-year-old who studied both culinary arts and business in college, said last month at Vaneheim, which has seating for 110 people on wooden tables with a window allowing customers to see the polished metal brewing tanks. “Although it’s a small and ...More info on site

Brewery news World: SABMiller Africa Executive’s view of M&A prospects
Opportunities for mergers have become far fewer but bigger, SABMiller Africa's managing director said in an interview on January 22 on the margins of the World Economic Forum, according to Wall Street Journal.

While Mark Bowman didn’t want to weigh in on speculation that SABMiller – the world’s second-largest brewer by sales – could be a takeover target for the world’s No. 1, Anheuser-Busch InBev, he noted the main issue in the beer industry now was “whether bigger players will start consuming each other.”

In Africa, where Mr. Bowman oversees SABMiller’s operations, acquisition prospects are slim, he said, but more options could be found in Asia.

For the first time at SAB, Africa contributed more to profit than Europe in the most recent financial year. The continent’s beer consumption is growing faster than that of any other region, but the drink remains a luxury for most Africans, Mr. Bowman said.

SABMiller owns a 20% stake in the African beer operations of France’s Castel Group, a closely held family company. Mr. Bowman said it was up to Castel to decide whether it wants to sell those operations, but he added he hoped SABMiller would be a “natural candidate” if the smaller company did decide to ...More info on site

Brewery news South Sudan: SABMiller keeps brewing at half capacity in troubled South Sudan
When the brewery shuts down, that's when you really need to start worrying. Any Africa hack will tell you that from eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to Sierra Leone, even when war is at its worst, breweries continue to operate, Mail & Guardian reported on January 24.

The crisis in South Sudan that started on December 15 has compelled embassies and nongovernmental organisations to evacuate staff and travel warnings have been issued for foreigners to leave the country immediately. According to the United Nations, more than 500,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and thousands have been killed because of the fighting.

But the South African- and United Kingdom-based SABMiller seems destined to follow in the footsteps of brave African producers that make sure villages across Africa get their beer, regardless of the circumstances. It's not going to be easy, however.

Established in 2009 and expanded during the euphoria of independence for South Sudan in 2011, the brewery remains the only manufacturer in the country's fledgling capital Juba, according to its spokesperson, Nigel Fairbrass.

When violence broke out at the end of last year, 53 SABMiller expatriates were evacuated to South Africa, the UK and Uganda and the brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: SABMiller to increase investment in brewery expansion in Nigeria
SABMiller said on January 23 that it will be increasing its investment in its Nigerian subsidiary, Intafact Beverages Ltd, with a further USD110 million in order to triple capacity at its Onitsha brewery, according to London South East.

Brewing giant SABMiller made an initial investment of over USD100 million in the Onitsha brewery, in the largest single investment in Anambra State for almost 20 years, it said.

The company said that following growth and the success of its 'Hero Lager' product, an additional USD110 million will be pumped into the brewery to triple its current annual capacity from 700,000 to 2.1 million hectolitres. The brewery already directly employs 300 local people and the investment will lead to the creation of a further 400 direct jobs.

Simon Harvey, SABMiller Nigeria Managing Director, said, "We have made significant investments over the past five years in Nigeria and this announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment in the country."

The capacity expansion work has begun, said SABMiller, and is set to complete in the first quarter of 2015.

The brewery will continue to produce brands including Hero Lager, Castle Milk Stout and non-alcoholic malt beverages Grand Malt and Beta Malt.

Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, President of The Federal Republic of Nigeria, ...More info on site

Whisky news UK & India: Diageo challenges Karnataka High Court decision to declare United Breweries stake sale void
United Breweries Limited (UB) and Diageo have challenged the decision of a Division Bench of the Karnataka High Court (HC) setting aside the sale of 6.96% stake in United Spirits Limited (USL) held by UB to Diageo, Bar & Bench reported on January 22.

When the matter was heard on January 20 by a Division Bench of Justices AK Patnaik and Ibrahim Kalifulla, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi represented Diageo while Senior Counsel Harish Salve appeared for UB. Senior Advocate TR Andhyarujina appeared for a consortium of creditors.

The sale of equity shares by UB to Diageo was initially approved by a single judge Bench of the HC. Subsequently, in a plea by the creditors of the UB, the sale was declared void by a Division Bench of the HC on the ground of improper valuation of shares and lack of bona fides as winding up petition against UB was pending admission.

Both Diageo and UB have claimed that the permission of sale of assets by the single judge pending admission of a winding up suit is the correct law and the Division Bench has erred in holding that the same was without jurisdiction.

Diageo has contended that as per Section 536 (2) of the ...More info on site
