Australia: Australia’s beer market dominated by international big companies
|
Consumer group Choice says a review of Australia’s beer market has found it remains dominated by the Japanese-owned Lion and London-based SABMiller, The Observer reported on January 27.
While many beers sold in Australia are marketed as locally owned "craft beer", the Choice analysis finds up to 47% of the domestic market is dominated by the big companies.
Among the brands consumers may have thought were local, were James Squire, Little Creatures and White Rabbit, all owned by Kirin-Lion.
Other top brands owned by overseas interests included Alehouse Summer Gold (Coca-Cola); and Fat Yak, Matilda Bay and Redback, owned by SABMiller.
Choice spokesman Tom Godfrey said their review came as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission investigates whether big companies are trying to lock out smaller breweries from the lucrative pub market.
"There's big money to be made in craft beer with the demand for a premium taste. Consumers are happy to pay for this," he said.
"Gone are the days where 'a hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer'. There's no 'treating strains or fixing trains'.
"Instead there's the quest for premium taste with an array of pilsners, pale ales and stouts, or beer infused with flavours like coffee, chocolate, truffles and even oysters."
Mr Godfrey

Japan: Suntory Holdings to release new beer perfect for Japanese food
|
There’s been a lot of research into the mystery of umami, the mild, pleasing savoury flavour that’s said to exist at the heart of Japanese cuisine. Often referred to as “the fifth taste”, alongside sweet, sour, salty and bitter, umami was first discovered by a Japanese professor and only officially recognised as a proper scientific term in 1985. Now, almost thirty years later, the delicate flavour is finally set to meet its perfect partner in a beer called Wazen (lit. Japanese meal). Due for release on April 8 by Japan’s Suntory Holdings, the beer is being billed as “the beer for Japanese food”, Rocket News 24 reported.
Developed for customers who like to enjoy a beer with dinner in the comfort of their homes, the drink is specifically designed to be enjoyed with washoku, traditional Japanese food.
The beer has an alcohol content of 3.5% and is brewed in 100% spring water. Until mid-March, visitors to the Suntory brand site who fill out an online survey have the chance to win one of 11,000 free six-packs.

India: Molson Coors Cobra India launches iconic Carling brand
|
Expanding its product range in the country, beer maker Molson Coors Cobra India on January 24 launched British iconic brand ‘Carling’ in the Indian market, Hindu Business Line reported on the same day.
The Mumbai-based company, a joint venture between US-based Molson Coors Brewing Company and the Cobra Indian Beer, markets two locally brewed beer brands, King Cobra and Iceberg 9000.
“We started operations in Indian market two years ago. We have a brewery in Bihar, from where we produce King Kobra and Iceberg 9000 brands. Now, we are launching Carling brand in India,” Molson Coors International (MCI) President and Chief Executive Officer Kandy Anand told PTI. The firm wants to be a major player in the premium beer segment in the country, he added.
The company will import mild Carling beer in 300 ml pack initially and later in the year follow it up with the launch of locally produced strong beer in 650 ml pack.
“As of now, we are importing the mild lager from Burton-on-Trent, in England. As we go down the year, we plan to launch a strong beer from the Bihar brewery,” Anand said. The brewery near Patna was set up two years ago at an investment of $50

USA: MillerCoors launching bourbon-flavoured beer
|
MillerCoors is bringing a dash of hard liquor to the beer market by introducing a brew flavored with a hint of bourbon, Business Time reported on January 27.
MillerCoors is hoping that the new “Miller Fortune” will tempt drinkers of hard liquor back to a glass of suds, according to Bloomberg News. Beer sales have lost 6 percent of market share to spirits drinkers since 1999. The brewer plans to widely distribute Miller Fortune in the next couple of months, hoping a sleek black bottle and 6.9 percent alcohol content attracts the prized demographic of male drinkers aged 21 to 27.
The new beverage follows in the footsteps of two other boozier brews from Anheuser-Busch: Bud Light Platinum and Budweiser Black Crown. Both beers came out last year and have 6 percent alcohol content.

Mexico: Cerveceria Mexicana expanding to keep up with demand
|
Cerveceria Mexicana is set to expand its brewing facility in Mexico, in response to growing demand in the US and abroad, Drinks Business Review reported on January 27.
The Mexican brewery expects to complete the expansion by April 2014. The move is said to increase the brewery's production capacity by 35%.
A major chunk of the increased capacity will be used to produce Day of the Dead craft beer for Drinks Americas.
Drinks Americas Holdings CEO Timothy Owens said that Cerveceria Mexicana will meet customers demand through the strategic and calculated expansion of their facility.
"Cerveceria Mexicana is dedicated to upholding the craftsmanship of their premium authentic Mexican craft beers during and after this expansion," Owens added.
"We, at Drinks Americas, look forward to having the product available to meet market demand and to getting our leading beer brands into the hands and hearts of more adult consumers nationwide and beyond."
Besides the US, Cerveceria Mexicana also exports its beers in several countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, Holland, Ireland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, and Spain.
Drinks Americas is the exclusive US broker for premium authentic Mexican beers currently present in over 32 states.
