USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance announces preliminary financial results for 2013
|
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc., an independent craft brewing company, announced on January 28 preliminary 2013 financial results and plans for continued growth in 2014 and beyond by building on the company’s successful portfolio strategy and opportunity to capture gross margin expansion, MarketWatch reported on January 28.
“For everyone who knows me, it will come as no surprise that I am candidly mixed in terms of how I feel about our financial performance last year”, said CBA Chief Executive Officer Andy Thomas. “On the one hand, I am extremely proud of the record growth in sales and brand momentum that we achieved; but on the other hand, I know we can do much better given the talent, strategy and structure we have in place.
In looking ahead, I am wholly committed to seeing us apply the same resolve and discipline towards improving our bottom line that we did to achieve our strong topline growth last year.
Additionally, with our plans to expand our brewing capability in the Southeast, along with CBA’s new leadership team, I look forward to seeing us continue to build on our successes and deliver both strong topline and bottom line growth for the full year.
Finally, I want to

USA, MN: Northgate Brewing moving to a larger space
|
Northgate Brewing used to have the smallest brewery in the Twin Cities. Not anymore. The one-year-old company, which specializes in British ales, is moving to a 7,400-square-foot converted warehouse, Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reported on January 24.
The new premises are about 10 times as large as the current brewery, and will allow Northgate to have a 1,500-square-foot taproom.
Co-owner Adam Sjogren said Northgate signed a lease last week and, if plans go accordingly, the new brewery will be up and running late this summer.
"When we started this we didn't know if people would want British session ales, so we kept it small," Sjogren said. "We thought there was an uncovered gap in the beer drinking marketplace. We found out pretty quickly that people like it, and we hit capacity way earlier than we anticipated."

USA, WI: Wisconsin Brewing Company expands distribution throughout southeastern Wisconsin
|
Just two months after its successful debut in southcentral Wisconsin, Wisconsin Brewing Company is expanding distribution of its craft brews to retailers, bars and restaurants throughout southeastern Wisconsin, encompassing Racine and Kenosha on January 27 and the greater Milwaukee area on February 3, 77Square.com reported on January 23.
“Milwaukee wasn’t just handed the name ‘Beer City;’ that’s a reputation that’s been earned through an incredibly rich and storied brewing history,” said Carl Nolen, WBC president. “Wisconsin Brewing Company shares a lot of the same home-grown heritage, so we couldn’t be more excited to bring our brews to town and become part of this amazing legacy.”
Four beers will lead Wisconsin Brewing Company’s charge into southeastern Wisconsin: #001 Golden Amber Lager, featuring Moravian 37 barley and Williamette hops; #002 American I.P.A., a confidently hoppy I.P.A. with a Midwestern flair; #003 Brown & Robust Porter, an exhilarating three-malt brew with a perfectly bittered finish; and #004 Session I.P.A., a smooth and mellow I.P.A. that’s all about sipping satisfaction. The beers will be available in 6-pack bottles, on draught, and as a 12-bottle variety pack featuring all four brews. For distribution, Wisconsin Brewing Company is partnering with Beer Capitol in Milwaukee and CJW in Racine

USA, IL: Big Muddy Brewing getting bigger in Murphysboro
|
Owner Chuck Stuhrenberg has recently purchased two adjacent lots, totaling 9 acres, in the industrial park of Murphysboro with plans to add a canning line in March. The new lots will be used to grow barley and wheat for use in his products, The Southern reported on January 26.
“I hope, in the long run, it’s not only going to save us money, but be better for the environment,” Stuhrenberg said. “The whole trend right now is going local for all your supplies and we’re going to try and grow organically as possible.
“We’ll be incorporating a certain percentage of that grain into every brew that we do on location and will no longer have to ship grain from Canada.”
Big Muddy Brewing has also added a 2,500 square foot storage building that is engineered to accommodate 60-barrel fermenters, opposed to the four 30-barrel and one 15-barrel fermenters that occupy the main facility. The 60-barrel fermenters will greatly increase the business’s capacity when fully utilized.
“A year ago, we had all 15-barrel fermenters,” Stuhrenberg said. “We’ve almost doubled our capacity.”
Since Big Muddy Brewing opened in 2009, Jackson County has seen a sharp increase in interest in the craft beer market. Von Jacob Winery and

USA, NY: Four Mile Brewing Company on track to open in the fall
|
Gregg Piechota, Jaye Beattie and Nicholas Bohdanowycz are in the throes of opening up Four Mile Brewing in Olean, first commercial beer brewery in decades.
“We’ve been working on this for about three years,” Piechota, Four Mile’s founder and head brewer, told the Olean Times Herald on January 26. “We’ve done a lot of research, taken a few classes and talked to a lot of brewery owners.”
“We’re excited for this opportunity. This brewing is something that all of us are passionate about and making this fantasy our reality,” added Beattie, who will oversee Four Mile’s tap room and sales.
“It’s been a long road, and we’re ready to get going,” said Bohdanowycz, who will oversee the
brewery’s finances.
With no major delays, Four Mile Brewing is on track to open sometime this fall. During its first year of operations, the brewery will likely produce 1,500 barrels of beer. By its fifth year, the three brewery partners hope to be producing between 5,000 and 6,000 barrels.
“Lately, we’ve just been working on getting our finances together, getting our licenses, and setting the brewery up,” Piechota said. “We’re planning to remodel our buildings and we’ll be ordering custom-made brewing equipment in February,” representing an investment of nearly

USA, MT: Flathead Lake Brewery to open in Bigfork
|
For more than two years a new brewery with a familiar recipe has been brewing in the Bigfork area. Flathead Lake Brewery is just months away from canning their own beer, KAJ18 Kalispell Montana News reported on January 27.
Anyone driving through Bigfork, Montana can't help but pass right by one of the biggest construction projects in the Flathead Valley: a new home for the Flathead Lake Brewery. And excitement is building.
"We're very excited. Should be another few months and the project will be wrapped up," said Tim Jacoby, Flathead Lake Master Brewer.
Master Brewer Tim Jacoby says the brewery is right on track to be canning their beer by spring, "The brewery, we should be able to get running in spring, that'll happen first and then the restaurant, shortly after that. We hope by the summer."
The New Brewery will be LEED certified, and really one of a kind on the national level.
The new brewery will have an upper and lower deck that both look out over the Bigfork Bay on Flathead Lake.

USA, VA: Chaos Mountain Brewing coming to Franklin County
|
Chaos Mountain Brewing announced on January 27 that it plans to be up and running later this year, producing 2,500 barrels of beer in its first year and employing more than 20 people. A former bed factory at the foot of Cahas Mountain is being retrofitted to churn out a variety of brews for retail and restaurant consumption, according to Roanoke Times.
Joe Hallock, the owner of Chaos Mountain, said he had a stake in SleepSafe Beds, the company that owned the building. When he decided to sell his piece of the company, he took the building as part of the agreement. It had been on the market for about three years, since the bed manufacturer moved operations to a different location.
He said he always enjoyed the rural location of the factory, in the Callaway community, and originally planned to name the brewery after Cahas Mountain. Soon, though, he realized a slight tweak would give it a universal ring and branding advantage. “Chaos just seemed more appropriate,” Hallock said.
Right now, Hallock is working to complete the arsenal of equipment that will be necessary to run a 30-barrel brew system. He said the goal is to open the facility for business in

USA: MillerCoors launching bourbon-flavoured beer
|
MillerCoors is bringing a dash of hard liquor to the beer market by introducing a brew flavored with a hint of bourbon, Business Time reported on January 27.
MillerCoors is hoping that the new “Miller Fortune” will tempt drinkers of hard liquor back to a glass of suds, according to Bloomberg News. Beer sales have lost 6 percent of market share to spirits drinkers since 1999. The brewer plans to widely distribute Miller Fortune in the next couple of months, hoping a sleek black bottle and 6.9 percent alcohol content attracts the prized demographic of male drinkers aged 21 to 27.
The new beverage follows in the footsteps of two other boozier brews from Anheuser-Busch: Bud Light Platinum and Budweiser Black Crown. Both beers came out last year and have 6 percent alcohol content.

Australia: Australia’s beer market dominated by international big companies
|
Consumer group Choice says a review of Australia’s beer market has found it remains dominated by the Japanese-owned Lion and London-based SABMiller, The Observer reported on January 27.
While many beers sold in Australia are marketed as locally owned "craft beer", the Choice analysis finds up to 47% of the domestic market is dominated by the big companies.
Among the brands consumers may have thought were local, were James Squire, Little Creatures and White Rabbit, all owned by Kirin-Lion.
Other top brands owned by overseas interests included Alehouse Summer Gold (Coca-Cola); and Fat Yak, Matilda Bay and Redback, owned by SABMiller.
Choice spokesman Tom Godfrey said their review came as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission investigates whether big companies are trying to lock out smaller breweries from the lucrative pub market.
"There's big money to be made in craft beer with the demand for a premium taste. Consumers are happy to pay for this," he said.
"Gone are the days where 'a hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer'. There's no 'treating strains or fixing trains'.
"Instead there's the quest for premium taste with an array of pilsners, pale ales and stouts, or beer infused with flavours like coffee, chocolate, truffles and even oysters."

Japan: Suntory Holdings to release new beer perfect for Japanese food
|
There’s been a lot of research into the mystery of umami, the mild, pleasing savoury flavour that’s said to exist at the heart of Japanese cuisine. Often referred to as “the fifth taste”, alongside sweet, sour, salty and bitter, umami was first discovered by a Japanese professor and only officially recognised as a proper scientific term in 1985. Now, almost thirty years later, the delicate flavour is finally set to meet its perfect partner in a beer called Wazen (lit. Japanese meal). Due for release on April 8 by Japan’s Suntory Holdings, the beer is being billed as “the beer for Japanese food”, Rocket News 24 reported.
Developed for customers who like to enjoy a beer with dinner in the comfort of their homes, the drink is specifically designed to be enjoyed with washoku, traditional Japanese food.
The beer has an alcohol content of 3.5% and is brewed in 100% spring water. Until mid-March, visitors to the Suntory brand site who fill out an online survey have the chance to win one of 11,000 free six-packs.

India: Molson Coors Cobra India launches iconic Carling brand
|
Expanding its product range in the country, beer maker Molson Coors Cobra India on January 24 launched British iconic brand ‘Carling’ in the Indian market, Hindu Business Line reported on the same day.
The Mumbai-based company, a joint venture between US-based Molson Coors Brewing Company and the Cobra Indian Beer, markets two locally brewed beer brands, King Cobra and Iceberg 9000.
“We started operations in Indian market two years ago. We have a brewery in Bihar, from where we produce King Kobra and Iceberg 9000 brands. Now, we are launching Carling brand in India,” Molson Coors International (MCI) President and Chief Executive Officer Kandy Anand told PTI. The firm wants to be a major player in the premium beer segment in the country, he added.
The company will import mild Carling beer in 300 ml pack initially and later in the year follow it up with the launch of locally produced strong beer in 650 ml pack.
“As of now, we are importing the mild lager from Burton-on-Trent, in England. As we go down the year, we plan to launch a strong beer from the Bihar brewery,” Anand said. The brewery near Patna was set up two years ago at an investment of $50
