Canada, NS: Brew pubs now allowed to sell beer in growlers for home consumption
|
People in Nova Scotia can now buy beer made in-house at brew pubs to take home, The Canadian Press reported on January 29.
Under changes to the province's Liquor Licensing Regulations, customers can buy beer from the pubs to take home instead of having to purchase it from an adjacent but separate storefront.
A spokeswoman for the provincial government said brew pubs can sell beer for off-site consumption from when they open until 10 p.m.
Beer is allowed to be sold in sealed 1.8 to two-litre bottles, known as growlers.

USA, MN: Malting barley varieties 2013 trial results
|
Spring barley varieties are compared in replicated trials at Crookston, Morris, St. Paul, Stephen and Roseau and in onfarm trials at Fergus Falls, Perley, Oklee, Strathcona and Hallock. Data collected from these trials should be used to make comparisons only among those varieties included in the trials. Yield is reported both for 2013 and a multiyear average as percent of the mean of the trial, Minnesota Farm Guide reported on January 30.
In 2013 the lowest yielding trial, overall, in bu/acre, was at Morris and the highest yield- LSD numbers beneath the yield columns indicate whether the difference between yields is due to genetics or to other factors, such as variations in environment. If yield difference between two entries equals or exceeds the LSD value the higher-yielding entry probably was superior in yield. A difference less than the LSD value is probably due to environmental factors.
Most barley producers in the region grow barley for malt and select varieties approved by the American Malting Barley Association (AMBA). The most important industry specifications for making malting grade are low grain protein (11.5% - 13.5%), kernel plumpness (>80%) and low deoxynivalenol or DON content (<2 ppm). USA, CO & NC: Oskar Blues Brewery announces 37% growth in 2013, expands
|
Oskar Blues Brewery, the first craft brewery in the country to brew and hand-can its beer, in November 2002, continued explosive growth in 2013 by posting a 37 percent increase in depletions and adding 32,000 barrels of production. This follows eight years of consecutive double digit growth (triple digit growth before that) which catapulted Oskar Blues to be named “Craft Brewer of the Year” by Beverage World Magazine in March, TheFullPint.com reported on January 30.
Oskar Blues Brewery packaged 59,000 barrels in 2011 and doubled that production, reaching over 119,000 barrels in 2013. The growth has been fueled by the addition of the second brewery and Tasty Weasel Taproom, both in Brevard, North Carolina. Brewing started in NC in December 2012. The Oskar Blues Brevard Brewery shipped more than 46,000 barrels in its first year of operation as East Coast distribution increased throughout the year.
Colorado’s funky little Lyons brew-pub has grown to become the largest American craft brewery to package beer exclusively in cans. The Colorado production was at 85,750 barrels of beer in 2012, which put Oskar Blues at 27th on the Brewers Association Top 50 Breweries list as of April 2013.

USA, CO: Dry Dock Brewing increased production almost fourfold in 2013
|
Last year, Aurora’s Dry Dock Brewing nearly quadrupled its production numbers, jumping from 3,273 barrels in 2012 to 12,000 barrels in 2013. This increase comes with Dry Dock’s new 30,000-square-foot production facility, North Dock, Brewbound reported on January 29.
At North Dock, Dry Dock has the space to brew 110,000 barrels a year. It currently has six 80-barrel fermenters and two 80-barrel bright tanks; and it continues to grow. There are another three 120-barrel fermenters and another 120-barrel bright tank on the way.
Also last year, Dry Dock began canning its beers at North Dock. In 2013, the company produced more than 2 million cans of Amber Ale, Hop Abomination, Hefeweizen, and Apricot Blonde.
Dry Dock Brewing, named for co-owner Kevin DeLange’s love of nautical history and its location in landlocked Colorado, is Aurora, Colorado’s first microbrewery, founded in 2005. DeLange and Michelle Reding first opened the homebrew supply shop, The Brew Hut, next door and took on brewing as a side project in a tiny, 800-square foot brewery with only 25 seats. What began as a speakeasy has become one of Colorado’s largest craft breweries.

Canada, ON & QC: Brick Brewing, Blue Spike partner to grow Seagram Cooler brand
|
Brick Brewing, a Canada-based publicly held brewery, has signed a licensing agreement with Blue Spike Beverages for its Seagram Cooler brand, Beer.drinks-business-review.com reported on 30 January.
As part of the deal, both firms will work to expand the production and distribution of Seagram Cooler products into the Quebec market.
Brick Brewing president and CEO George Croft said that they have partnered with Blue Spike to launch and grow the Seagram Cooler brand in Quebec.
"This long-term agreement will enable us to launch Seagram Coolers into the Quebec market this coming year," Croft added.
Blue Spike Beverages president Nicolas Gagnon-Oosterwaal said: "This licensing and distribution agreement is a validation of our team's ability to develop and commercialize breakthrough products and we're looking forward to working with Brick Brewing to develop new Seagram Cooler products for the Quebec market."

USA, LA: Tin Roof Brewing Company expanding production capacity
|
Fans of Tin Roof Brewing Company will have more and more opportunities to taste the suds from Baton Rouge. Tin Roof is growing, and the most recent expansion puts its production capacity at 7,500 barrels annually, up from 5,000 last year, NOLA.com reported on January 24.
The expansion comes after an additional 6,000 square feet were added to the riverside brewery in recent months and will soon feature the tap room, according to co-founder William McGehee.
The increased production also means Tin Roof will soon be available in Jackson, Hattiesburg and coastal Mississippi. The beer was already available in Natchez, the hometown of both McGehee and fellow co-founder Charles Caldwell.
The additional square footage "is pretty much all being used for storage right now," McGehee said, because the minimum order on empty cans is 100,000. "That freed up a lot of space in the original brewery where we were storing cans. The new (equipment) has gone where the old cans were."
McGehee said Tin Roof's entire brewing process has been upgraded in the expansion.
Although designs for the new tap room are still in the early stages, McGehee said he hopes the space will be open to visitors within the next two months.

USA, CO: Black Bottle Brewery expanding in Fort Collins

Brewer Tom Moseman cleaned two of the new fermenters at Block Bottle Brewing on January 29 in Fort Collins. The 1-year-old brewery is expanding, according to The Coloradoan.
After a year in operation, Fort Collins’ Black Bottle Brewery is gearing up to start bottling its own beer after its latest expansion effort.
The city’s youngest brewery moved in seven new fermenters and five new bright tanks on January 28, more than doubling its production capacity.
The brewery is undergoing its third expansion since opening in December 2012.
“This will allow us to have more of our beers on tap more regularly,” said General Manager Steve Marrick.
“We only had so many fermenters before, so we rotated through them.”
In addition to increased production, the brewery will begin bottling, starting with its Liquid Metal Imperial Rye Stout, Minor Threat Imperial IPA and PDA Belgian Tripel.
“Hopefully we’ll have some of those rolled out in March,” Marrick said.
With the increased production and bottling to support expansion, Marrick said the brewery is now in talks with Denver distributors about bringing Black Bottle beers to southern Colorado and Wyoming.
Today, Black Bottle distributes beers in Northern Colorado and the Western Slope through Loveland-based High Country Beverage.

USA: Heineken introduces 8.5 oz slim can format
|
Heineken US is to introduce the first 8.5 oz slim can format in the premium price segment. From 1 March 2014, Heineken 8.5 oz slim can 12-packs will roll out at retail outlets across the US, FoodBev.com reported on January 30.
"The 8.0 oz to 8.9 oz can size experienced explosive growth in 2012, growing 356% in case volume and 522% in dollar volume and now represents an 8.2 million case segment and growing," said Belen Pamukoff, Heineken brand director for Heineken US. "42% of that growth is generated in the c-store channel, where the 8.5 oz can format is outpacing all other sizes and is a preferred pack size among ethnic consumers.
"We are excited to now offer shoppers Heineken 8.5 oz slim cans, the first premium 8.5 oz format that caters to the growing Hispanic and African American demographic who prefer upscale beer and Heineken to mainstream counterparts.
"The 8.5 oz can is the perfect size for outdoor and sports-viewing occasions. The smaller can size ensures a colder liquid per serving, while Heineken's superior taste and contemporary upscale pack graphics provide consumers with a premium and memorable beer-drinking experience."

USA, NY: Barrage Brewing Company coming to East Farmingdale
|
Long Island's newest brewery has opened in East Farmingdale. Barrage Brewing Co. currently has four brews available, Newsday reported on January 30.
Barrage is the work of Stephen Pominski Jr., who's a trackside tower operator for the Long Island Railroad. He'd been a home brewer for 20 years. The name "barrage," he said, stems from the home bar that the Merrick resident had in his garage.
His beers are available at the brewery on Sundays and cost $13 to $18 for a half-gallon growler. The current brews include an American pale ale called Citralization; Fairytale Irish red ale; Blackspot, a black rye India Pale Ale; and McLaughlin's Folly, an oatmeal-raisin-vanilla stout.

Canada, BC: Black Kettle Brewing opens in North Vancouver

British Columbia’s first new craft brewery of 2014 quietly opened for business, according to Canadian Beer News.
Tucked away in an industrial area of North Vancouver, Black Kettle Brewing was launched on January 17th by owner Bryan Lockhart and brewmaster Phil Vandenborre.
The brewery is currently offering a single beer – the 4.5% abv Black Kettle Pale Ale – in growlers and kegs. It will soon be joined by a dry-hopped India Pale Ale, and 650 ml bomber bottles of both beers will be available in coming weeks.

UK: Beer duty freeze would secure 2,400 jobs - brewers
|
A freeze in beer duty in the 2014 budget would secure 2,400 jobs, promote growth and investment in Britain’s beer industry, The Drinks Business reported on January 30.
Last year the beer duty tax escalator was scrapped leading to renewed confidence in the sector and resulting in an increase in beer sales for two consecutive quarters for the first time in 10 years.
Industry CEOs are now pushing for a freeze on beer tax in this year’s budget and have put forward their case to Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Nicky Morgan MP.
Between 2008 to 2013 beer tax has increased by 42 per cent, despite beer sales dropping by 21 per cent.
In that time 7,000 pubs have closed representing a loss of 58,000 jobs in the UK.
British beer drinkers paying 42 per cent of the entire EU beer duty bill while beer and pubs contribute £22 billion to UK GDP and generate £11 billion in tax revenue.
A freeze in this year’s budget would lead to 2,400 additional jobs in the first year alone, at a cost of £4 million to the Government, and provide a further boost to the industry, according to new research from independent experts Oxford Economics.

Namibia & China: Namibia Breweries Limited starts shipping beer to China
|
The Chinese authorities have accepted the first ever consignment of Namibian brewed beer, a significant feat in the trade relationship between Namibia and China, second only to the first ever conclusive agreement on Animal Health and Quarantine the two countries signed in 2011, All Africa reported on January 29.
Namibia Breweries Limited exported the Windhoek Lager beer brand in early December last year from the port of Walvis Bay and the consignment arrived in China on January 7.
"Windhoek Lager was exported and received with open arms as the demand for Windhoek Lager increases with [Chinese] locals travelling to Namibia and South Africa," the manager for Global Sales at Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) Goose Goosen said this week.
The consignment was shipped to test and gauge market response, but Goosen says there is "a preference for Windhoek Lager and Windhoek Draught." Namibia has been working to diversify its exports to China, and to move away from the export of raw minerals and to promote greater value addition in Namibia. Russia: Ban on beer at sporting events may be lifted as early as this year
|
A leading lawmaker in Russia has called on the ban on selling beer at sporting events to be lifted ahead of the country hosting the football World Cup in 2018, echoing a similar earlier appeal by President Vladimir Putin, The Moscow News reported on January 31.
Igor Rudensky, who heads the Committee on Economic Policy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the State Duma, said that allowing the sale of beer in stadiums would be in tune with widely accepted international practice.
The ban could potentially be lifted as early as this year.
The sale of beer and beer advertising was banned at sports venues in 2005 as part of a wide series of measures aimed at slashing alcohol consumption in Russia.
Rudensky said that while the prohibition of beer could be reconsidered, spirits should remain banned and that fans needed to develop a more responsible drinking culture. Under proposal made by Rudensky, the sale of beer would be restricted to stadium eateries.
Then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said two years ago that beer should be allowed at the 2018 World Cup.
