Brewery news USA: TTB says 948 new brewery permits issued
The Alcohol Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) registered 948 new “permitted breweries” in 2013 and there are now 3,699 active, the Beer Institute reported on February 12.

Analysis by the Beer Institute showed that the majority of the new permits issued in 2013 went to brewpubs. It also found that four states account for one-third of all breweries in the United States: California, Washington, Colorado and Oregon.

“We have tracked the industry since our preceding trade association was first founded in 1862, and there’s a story in these numbers. Beer is constantly evolving in the U.S., with more small brewers than ever before, more brands being introduced by national brewers and growing interest in imports,” Chris Thorne, vice president of communications at the Beer Institute, said for a press release.

“There was a long period of consolidation in the industry, but during that same period, beer became the most popular drink in America. Thanks in great part to the small brewer tax credit, today we’re seeing more small brewers than ever before. But consumers are also increasingly less loyal to beer, and that is a challenge for every brewer of any size,” Thorne said.

More than 90% of permitted breweries produce less than ...More info on site

Barley news Canada, AB: Barley Council of Canada holds election of executives
Executives for the Barley Council of Canada (BCC) are now in place, representing all sectors of the value-chain. The BCC held the election at its first annual general meeting on February 12, 2014 in Calgary. The Board and membership officially elected Brian Otto of Western Barley Growers Association as president and chair and Chantelle Donahue of Cargill Canada as vice-president and vice-chair, Digitaljournal.com reported on February 13.

"It is an honour to continue to serve this national council as president and chairman," said Otto. "I look forward to continuing to work nationally on behalf of the entire barley value chain."

Donahue will continue to play a vital role with the BCC as she looks to grow collaboration throughout the industry in her role as vice-chair. Originally from Biggar, Saskatchewan, she is pleased to continue building a strong future for barley.

"Building the national barley council has taken commitment and collaboration across the value-chain," said Donahue. "It's been a tremendous journey, and I look forward to further strengthening the Canadian barley industry in 2014."

The new executive is representative of Canada's barley value-chain.

"As industry members and farmers, our Board recognizes the importance of equal representation at the table," said Otto. "With key sector representation at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Brew Detroit’s bet on contract brewing
Brew Detroit LLC is a new and a state-of-the-art 100-barrel contract brewery started with $8 million in private investment. Led by Keith Sirois, the CEO of Big Boy Restaurants International, Brew Detroit LLC is set to launch in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood next month, Brewbound reported on February 12.

Other partners in the contract brew startup include David Crawford, Big Boy’s senior vice president of marketing, and Don Foss, a famous used car salesman and the founder of Credit Acceptance Corporation, which provides auto loans to individuals with substandard credit. Mark Rieth, the owner of Atwater Brewery (and a former automotive professional himself) is also a minority partner in the new venture.

Sirois said that “a few years ago,” on behalf of Big Boy chairman Robert Liggett Jr., he reviewed the financials for a craft brewery looking to raise capital.

“The result was that we thought the brewery was over-leveraged,” he said. “It wouldn’t be worth it. We kept looking at the white space in brewing and, especially in Michigan, we saw a need for a space to produce beer in quantity for all these wonderful brands that the state of Michigan has.”

Sirois, Crawford, Foss and Rieth invested a combined $8 million to start ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Iron Goat Brewing expands in Spokane
Iron Goat Brewing doubled their production capacity for the second time in the one and a half years they have been open. The newly installed equipment starts production this month, Brewbound reported on February 12.

With the expansion IGB will increase production of some of their flagship beers such as Impaler Imperial IPA, Head Butt IPA and Garbage Pale Ale as well as some of their most popular seasonals like Goatnik Russian Imperial Stout. The higher production levels will help satisfy the growing demand from recently expanded distribution in northern Idaho and the Columbia Basin and facilitate IGB’s plans to transition into bottling 22 oz. bombers later this spring.

About Iron Goat Brewing

What began as a chance meeting between four like-minded craft beer lovers, Iron Goat Brewing brews a variety of ales from Northwest IPAs to Belgian tripels, stouts to sessions. Named for the iconic garbage-sucking goat in Spokane’s Riverfront Park, the brewery and attached taproom are five minutes east of downtown in what has become Spokane’s Brewery District.

Brewery news USA, CA & AZ: Mike Hess Brewing expanding distribution of craft beers to Arizona
This March, San Diego’s Mike Hess Brewing (MHB) will be expanding its distribution of craft beers to Arizona. The brewery team officially crosses state lines during Arizona Beer Week, February 15–22, stocked with their five flagship beers to share with Arizona residents, Brewbound reported on February 12.

Mike Hess Brewing is excited to sign with World Class Beer, the craft division of market powerhouse Crescent Crown Distributing out of Mesa, AZ, who will bring MHB drafts and canned beers to fine bars, retailers and restaurants throughout the state.

MHB will enter the Phoenix market with five core brands, including Grazias, a 6.3% ABV Vienna Cream Ale that USA Today described as “innovative…an instant Beer Week hit.” In addition, the expanded distribution will include Jucundus, an Orange Honey Wheat, as well as Claritas, a Kölsch (blonde), and two mouth-watering West-coast style IPAs, Solis and Habitus.

“Our expansion to Arizona was not only strategic, because of the great craft market that Phoenix represents, but it’s also a sort of homecoming for us — many of our family members live in Phoenix, and it’s my wife’s hometown.” said founder Mike Hess. “San Diego is a second home to many Arizonans and they have been visiting our ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: 300 Suns Brewery Company to open in Logmont
A year and a half in the making, 300 Suns Co. has an opening day on the calendar for 300 Suns Brewing. Longmont's newest craft beer brewery will open for business at noon on Saturday, February 22, Boulder County Business Report reported on February 12.

"We're all excited," Mark Lusher, one of four co-founders, said. "There's a little nervous energy as well because there's so much to do and get ready. We want to hopefully get a great start and establish a good reputation."

Lusher said there is still an inspection with the city and last-minute cosmetic work to complete, as well as finishing up the first batches of beer to be served.

Lusher, who works in IT and web development and owns the Colab co-working space in downtown Boulder, is starting the brewery with Candace Newcomb, an accountant, and Jean and Dan Ditslear, who own a marketing firm in Longmont.

Lusher is head brewer, while Dan Ditslear will assist. Brewery news Canada, ON: Haliburton Highlands Brewing to open this summer
The connections between craft beer and local food are often celebrated, and that connection will be especially strong for a new brewery that will soon be opening as part of a complex dedicated to promoting local and sustainable food in Haliburton County, Canadian Beer News reported on February 12.

Haliburton Highlands Brewing is being founded by Michael and Jewelle Schiedel-Webb – he a Siebel-trained brewmaster, and she a management and operations expert. The couple is working in partnership with Abbey Gardens, a unique community-driven initiative located on a 210 acre former gravel pit that is being converted into a “world-renowned centre for community-driven sustainable innovation,” with a focus on promoting “sustainable living, local food, and renewable energy.”

We look forward to contributing to the robust local food network in the Highlands.”

Brewery news Japan: Beer shipments rise 9.5% in January
Japan’s shipments of beer and beerlike alcoholic drinks rose 9.5 percent in January from the previous year, logging their first increase in three months on solid sales of mainstay products spruced up by renewals, The Japan Times quoted data from five major brewers on February 13.

The pace of growth is the highest since the 13 percent logged in January 2011. Some 22.48 million cases were shipped last month, with each case equivalent to 20 633-ml bottles on a volume basis.

Two of the leaders — Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Kirin Brewery Co. — renewed key products in December. Their efforts got a lift from the unusually long New Year holidays, which coincided with a stretch of good weather that contributed to the sales surge.

By category, regular beer shipments soared 10 percent to 11.21 million cases thanks to robust demand from households and stores. Shipments of “happoshu,” a low-malt near-beer, grew 3.5 percent to 3.15 million cases, while cheap “third-category beer” gained 11.2 percent to 8.11 million cases.

The five breweries are Asahi Breweries, Kirin Brewery, Suntory Liquors Ltd., Sapporo Breweries Ltd. and Orion Breweries Ltd.

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia and Guinness Anchor stocks gain on expectations of strong Q4 results
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd and Guiness Anchor Bhd (GAB) snatched the two top spots among gainers on February 11 as investors expect their fourth quarter results to be strong, The Edge Malaysia reported.

At 12.30 pm noon break, Carlsberg – the top gainer – jumped 44 sen or 3.6% to RM12.62 per share on trades of 215,000 shares. The stock has been rising from RM11.10 in the past several trading days.

GAB, which ranked second among risers, soared 36 sen or 2.6% to RM14.48 on 99,300 shares. Like Carlsberg, it has started to rise earlier this month.

“It could be due to expectations of higher profitability. There were fewer measures (against the breweries) in the recent Budget and there were a few positive brokers' reports over the past few weeks,” said Ian Yoong, a private investor and former investment banker.

Yoong also told theedgemalaysia.com: "The recent M&A activity in the global alcoholic beverage sector has raised the bar to about 20-25x EBITDA.

“Malaysian breweries Guinness Anchor and Carlsberg are trading way below this benchmark. The interest in these stocks may be an indication of impending M&A (merger and acquisition) activity."

Brewery news UK: Budvar’s new UK sales director discusses growth strategy
Budvar’s new UK sales director plans to grow the business by pushing 33cl cans, price-marked packs, the super-premium Budvar Premier Select and an alcohol-free beer, Off Licence News reported on February 14.

Simon George recently joined the business from Magners, and he has pledged to spark “sustainable growth” in “an iconic beer brand” by diversifying away from the core brand.

He said: “In the off-trade we have a real opportunity around Budvar in cans. We have spent £3.5 million on the canning line to revamp it.

“Cans for us are up 47% in the last year, driven by a really good performance of the 33cl can.

“Sainsbury’s has taken that 6x33cl and it’s doing really well. It’s a point of difference.”

George also singled out non-alcoholic beer as an opportunity. He said although Budvar’s non-alcoholic offering did not have good distribution it was was “an excellent proposition” and “a huge opportunity” for the brand.

He added: “Of all the non-alcoholic beers in the world this one actually tastes like a beer. That category could do with a refresh.

“We also have a strong opportunity to develop the 7.5% abv Premier Select.”

George admitted that this category is under intense pressure from government, but said he hoped the authorities ...More info on site

Brewery news France: Heineken claims sales leadership over Carlsberg brands
Heineken’s iconic brand gained 0.4 points in 2013 to reach a 17.3% market share and become the new market leader in France, Pascal Sabrie, Heineken France President, was quoted as saying by Le Figaro on February 13.

Citing IRI data, Mr. Sabrie said the Dutch brand thus overcame Carlsberg’s Kronenbourg (16.2% market share by volume) and 1664 beer (10.3%) in hypermarkets. Heineken, which is priced even higher, claims 18.4% of the market in value terms, against Kronenbourg’s 12.5% and 1664’s 11.3%.

Kronenbourg owners, however, don’t agree with Heineken and claim hypermarket leadership at 17.6%, pointing out that the latter does not take into account sales of Kronenbourg 7.2 (amber) Kronenbourg Pur Malt (alcohol-free), comparing Heineken sales to Kronenbourg Export’s (blonde) only.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Budweiser Budvar invests in new can filling line to meet growing at-home consumption trend
Budweiser Budvar says it chose to invest in a new KHS can filling line following a recent shift in the nation’s beer market towards at-home beer consumption, BeverageDaily.com reported on February 10.

In 2013 around 40% of beer sold in the country was consumed in restaurants and bars, the beer brand says, compared with 50% in 2005, with keg, tank, vat and barrel sales declining.

Budweiser Budvar is the No.4 brand in the Czech Republic behind Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen and Heineken – native industry average sales rose 1.5% in 2012, but the brand recorded 2% growth. According to a recent case study released by KHS, sales of Budweiser Budvar in PET and glass bottles now account for 70% of brand sales at home, followed by 25% in kegs, tanks, vats and barrels and the remaining 5% in cans, a figure that is rising.

“To date we had our cans filled under license. However, as there’s been a distinct growth in the sale of canned beer, it’s now worth investing in our own canning line. Even if our can sales should stagnate, it’s still profitable,” Adam Brož, master brewer and director of production and technology at Budweiser Budvar said.

Brewery news Belarus: Vice Premier orders investigation of Heineken’s loss-making operations
Belarus’ Vice Premier Mikhail Rusyi instructed the Mogilev Oblast authorities to look into the reasons for the loss-making operation of the Heineken business in Bobruisk and to submit a report within a week. The Vice Premier took part in a meeting of the Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee to review the economic performance of the region in 2013, BelTA reported on February 13.

The Vice Premier said he was bewildered why such a big famous brewing company has been operating in the red in Belarus for several years already. “According to economic laws, such enterprises are either closed down or sold to other more successful companies. If this does not happen, it means Heineken has some other sources of income,” said Mikhail Rusyi.

“We need to look into this matter and sort everything out over the next week,” said Mikhail Rusyi. “After all, if the company does not earn a profit, it means it does not pay corresponding taxes to the budget. This is not good, especially for such a well-known brand as Heineken.”

For his part, the Chairman of the Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee Piotr Rudnik suggested setting out a target for all regional businesses and organizations regarding the return on sales, which ...More info on site
