Portugal: Budejovicky Budvar wins exclusive rights to the Budweiser trademark in Portugal
|
The Czech brewery Budvar says a Portuguese trade court has ruled that it will have the exclusive rights to the Budweiser trademark in the country, cancelling the rights owned by rival Anheuser-Busch InBev, The Associated Press reported on February 19.
State-owned Budejovicky Budvar NP has been fighting with Anheuser-Busch for over a century over use of the Budweiser name. The legal battle continued when Anheuser-Busch was taken over by Belgium's InBev in 2008 to create the world's largest brewer.
In a statement on February 19, Budvar says the Lisbon court banned AB InBev from selling any beer under the name Budweiser. It gave Budvar the sole rights to the Budweiser trademark in Portugal.
AB InBev spokeswoman Karen Couck said in an email the ruling has not affected the sales of its beer "under the established Bud brand in Portugal."

World: SABMiller developing beers to attract wine and spirit drinkers
|
SABMiller is developing beers to attract wine and spirits drinkers as it looks to counter similar innovation drives from rival brewers AB InBev and Heineken to introduce new beer styles, Marketing Week reported on February 19.
The world’s second biggest by sales says it will launch a range of “fruitier” and “sweeter” liquids moving forward in the hopes of appealing to the growing number of discerning alcohol drinkers.
It is currently doing “extensive research” in understanding how to develop beers it can market more prominently around factors such as colour, smell and alcohol level.
Alan Clark, chief executive of SABMiller, told analysts on a conference call on February 19, that the focus on alternative beers aimed to counter “taste harmonisation”, wherein many lager brands end up tasting similar due to brewers attempting to maximise the appeal of their global brands.
He added: “There are many opportunities to innovate and expand beyond beer with a range of products that move from non-alcoholic, to lower-alcohol versions….and to flavoured alcoholic drinks and ciders. We have seen opportunities where we can reverse the trend of spirits and wines gaining share from beer. That’s certainly an objective for ourselves in more mature markets where we think the

USA: MillerCoors launches Miller Fortune lager nationwide
|
Now available nationwide, MillerCoors’ new Miller Fortune is an un-distilled, spirited golden lager with a richer, balanced taste and 6.9 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). Miller Fortune is the largest launch of a completely new brand from MillerCoors, Drinks Business Review reported on February 20.
Developed to be served in a rocks glass, Miller Fortune is brewed with specially-roasted caramel malt and cascade hops for a moderately bitter flavor with a hint of sweetness. The brand attributes communicate a sophisticated edge meant to inspire consumers to turn any occasion into something unforgettable.
"With the rise of cocktail culture, we know consumers are looking for new products and flavors," said MillerCoors CMO Andy England. "With that in mind, we developed Miller Fortune to provide consumers with a unique and deliciously balanced option to elevate their drinking experience."
Miller Fortune is available in 6- and 12-pack jet-black bottles and in 16- and 24-ounce battleship gray single-serve cans.

Ukraine: Grain and other commodity export deals grind to a halt as violence spreads
|
Ukrainian steel, grain and other commodity export deals have virtually ground to a halt as violence in Kiev that has killed dozens this week triggered fears of port closures and defaults, driving up risk premiums on prices for future shipments, Reuters reported on February 20.
Ports were operating on February 20, allowing goods to leave the country, but traders said new deals were proving difficult on concerns that violence may spread beyond the capital to Ukraine's Black Sea ports in the south.
Banks are reluctant to finance new deals while traders are worried about meeting existing contract deadlines, sources say.
Demonstrations erupted in November after President Viktor Yanukovich bowed to Russian pressure and pulled out of a planned trade and cooperation deal with Brussels. Ukraine is the world's No. 2 grain exporter and about No. 7 in steel.
"Since it became more violent I haven't seen any trade. People are working from home, our office is closed," said a grain trader at an international commodities trade house.
"We already have commitments and you don't want to add to the current commitments," he said.
One Ukraine-based coal trader said that demand for his products had been weak recently, while a steel-products trader said that he had done
