Hops against Alzheimer disease!
ABSTRACT
Japanese researchers have screened more than 1600 plants
used in Chinese medicine to see if any of these could be
used to treat the Alzheimer disease, which is the most
frequently observed neurodegenerative disorder in Japan
and other advanced countries. Guess what they found as a
promising plant - hops! It is generally accepted that
Alzheimer disease is caused by a certain protein (Aβ) and
the production of this protein was inhibited by a hops
extract. A major component resulting in the inhibitory
activity was purified, and its chemical identity was
determined to be Garcinielliptone HC. For the experiments,
model mice with Alzheimer disease with hop extracts
consumed daily in their drinking water showed significant
mitigation of memory impairment at ages of 9 and 12
months. Moreover, oral administration of hop extracts also
prevented an emotional disturbance. Despite lifelong
consumption of hop extracts, no deleterious side effects
were observed at any age. So if you don't forget your daily
share of hops you won't forget anything any longer.

EU & USA: The Brewers of Europe calling for a level playing field for small brewers exporting to the US
|
Having been tabled during the 3rd round, Europe’s brewers are calling for a level playing field on tax relief for small brewers to be included in negotiations at the 4th round of TTIP talks between the EU and the US next week, The Brewers of Europe reported on March 7.
Currently small US brewers exporting to the EU are eligible for the reduced tax rate both in the US and the EU, whilst a European brewer exporting to the US gets no such break.
Just as small brewers from the US can receive significant discounts when exporting to the EU, the ambition is that small brewers from the EU benefit from the same discount in the US as the domestic brewers. In the US, whilst the larger breweries pay a federal excise tax of $18 per barrel, small brewers pay just $7 per barrel on the first 60,000 barrels they brew.

UK: AB InBev to launch rum-flavoured Cubanisto beer this month
|
A rum-flavoured beer, named Cubanisto, will be launched by AB InBev this month, Morning Advertiser reported on March 5.
The 5.9% ABV spirit-beer, inspired by the Caribbean, is purported to taste of “citrus, orange zest and lime” and have the “aroma of caramelised cane sugar and treacle”.
AB InBev UK’s senior brand manager Emily Kraftman said: “Cubanisto is a brand waiting to be discovered by tech-savvy trend setters, and enjoyed when socialising and celebrating with friends. AB InBev has a track record of launching successful innovations, with Stella Artois Cidre in the UK being a great example. “
Cubanisto will be available in 330ml UV-light sensitive coated bottles and will be showcased in the on-trade, with bottle glorifiers, stencils and illuminators to make it “perfect for nightlife occasions”.
“There will be secret consumer experiences which can only be unlocked through social media, and new technology will be used to enable fans to gain access to exclusive content,” the company added.

USA: Constellation to boost Corona Light advertising
|
Last year Mexican import Corona Light tried to gain ground against its larger US light beer foes with ads featuring talking sheep that encouraged drinkers to "ditch the herd" and try something new, AdvertisingAge reported on March 7.
But for 2014 the brand is ditching the sheep in favor of a new ad approach that puts more emphasis on the liquid inside the bottle. The campaign pitches the brand as the choice for people who are "ready for a light beer you can actually taste." The ads are part of a new strategy to target middle-aged drinkers rather than twentysomethings. The campaign is by Omnicom Group's Goodby Silverstein & Partners, which has held the account since late 2011.
One TV ad, called "Epiphany," makes a pretty blatant attempt to differentiate the brand from more youthful-targeted beers like Bud Light by featuring a man who is relieved to be in a bar where his shoes aren't sticking to the floor. And the "hot brunette" that catches his eye from across the room happens to be his wife.

|
Guinness Ghana Breweries Ltd (GGBL) has unveiled a new-look Star lager beer in commemoration of Ghana’s 57th Independence anniversary, Ghana Web reported on March 7.
Announcing the new-look, Agnes Essah, Marketing Director, GGBL, said “we are launching this new look for Star Beer in keeping with its rich heritage and connection to celebrations in Ghana. Since its introduction to Ghana, Star Beer has remained the favourite beer playing an integral part in every celebration across the country.”
She continued that, “the new look comes on the back of the current campaign with R2Bees, the sensational hiplife musical duo and brand ambassadors of Star Beer, which seeks to take the best of our heritage and make a move into the future.
“Star Beer is doing the same – taking the best of its heritage into a bright new future. This Star new look boasts a modern attractive packaging with an extended neck label and oval shaped body lined with gold to give it a premium and contemporary look,” she said.

World: Turmoil in Ukraine signalling buyers may have to import more corn from the US
|
Ukraine’s escalating turmoil is signalling that grain buyers may be forced to import more from the U.S. as corn prices rally to a six-month high, Bloomberg reported on March 5.
Farmers in Ukraine are holding commodity supplies to hedge against a devaluing currency, slowing shipments, according to Cary Sifferath, a regional director for the U.S. Grains Council. Buyers in Asia may be reluctant to purchase from Eastern Europe on supply-disruption concerns, according to Jefferies Bache LLC. Ukraine was projected to be the world’s third-biggest corn exporter and sixth-largest wheat shipper this season. The U.S. is the top shipper of both grains.
Russia’s troop buildup in Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula roiled grain markets this week. Corn futures climbed to the highest since September in Chicago on March 5, rebounding from last year’s 40 percent plunge. On March 4, wheat reached the highest in 12 weeks. Black Sea port and shipping operations mostly continued as normal, according to Western Bulk ASA, which runs 120 commodity vessels.

South Africa: SABMiller’s hop farms supply their products to an increasing number of craft brewers
|
Reflective of the burgeoning craft-beer industry, SAB Hops Farms now supplies hops to about 140 microbreweries, from as few as 10 just five years ago, Business Day reported on March 7.
SAB Hops Farms, a wholly owned subsidiary of South African Breweries (SAB), has under its breeding programme produced three aroma-flavour varieties of the crop, which have become popular among microbrewers, says management.
But despite the rapid growth of the craft-beer market, microbreweries use only about 2% of SAB Hops Farms’ total production, given the small scale of their operations.
A number of microbreweries also choose to import their hops, which are produced more cheaply in the crop’s natural environment in parts of Europe, and in other parts of the northern hemisphere that are further from the equator.
Rustenburg-based Brauhaus am Damm has doubled its monthly craft-beer production over the past two years to 8,000 litres a month, an example of how popular craft beer is becoming. The German-styled microbrewery has grown on demand from craft-beer festivals, German school events and the growing number of bars, restaurants and pubs serving craft beer, says its brewer Imke Pape.
