Gushing - again, oxygen is the enemy?
ABSTRACT
U.S. researchers have looked into the gushing
potential of different bitter acids as tetrahydro-isoalpha
acids, rho-isoalpha acids, hexahydro-isoalpha acids and
isoalpha acids. With a model system they came to the
conclusion that all of them have an influence on gushing.
Gushing was observed only in products with oxidative
degradation of isoalpha acids yielding in gushing initiators
that are also carried through further processing into the
reduced versions of isoalpha acids.
So take good care of the accurate storage of your
isomerized products in the brewery! Read more

UK: World’s leading brewers launching new beers to meet Britain’s thirst for sweeter alternatives
|
AB InBev’s first foray into the spirits beer category with Cubanisto reflects Britain’s growing thirst for sweeter alternatives with Heineken and SABMiller also looking to exploit the trend and make beer more appealing in nightclubs, Marketing Week reported on March 10.
The Budweiser owner is launching its rum-based variant at the end of the month (24 March) with a campaign targeting “tech savvy trendsetters”. Activity pitches the beer as “perfect for nightlife occasions” and will span pop-up parties and live art performances throughout 2014.
The popularity of spirit beers has been growing for several years, extending the wider category to key trading sessions for the big night out occasion. The upswing is expected to push the flavoured on-trade market to be worth £400 mln by 2016, according to alcohol consultants CGA Strategy, with core consumers coming from the 18 to 25 range.
Global brewers are now experimenting with different mixers to capitalise on the shift and cement their presence in a market still lacking the premium credentials of its world or craft beer counterparts.
Emily Kraftman, senior brand manager for Cubanisto, said the spirit beer’s premium status is being pushed through offering drinkers access to exclusive “trendy”, “money can’t buy events”.

Spain & Cameroon: Spain’s Mahou San Miguel launches its beerin Cameroon
|
Mahou San Miguel, a Spanish brewer, has announced the launch of its Cinco Estrellas brand in Cameroon. The launch is aimed at increasing the company’s presence in the African continent, Mahou’s second biggest market after Europe, Gama reported on March 4.
According to Granconsumo.tv, Mahou San Miguel Group’s volume sales grew 16% last year in Africa. The company already sells its products in countries such as Morocco, Ghana, Algeria, Guinea and Congo. The Spanish brewery exports to 50 countries across the world and accounts for 75% of the total volume of beer exported in Spain. In 2012, Mahou San Miguel exported 11% of its total sales volume.
Jonathan Stordy, CEO of the Intenational Business Unit of Mahou San Miguel, commented that Africa is the world’s fastest growing market for beer products.

Romania: Heineken sells former Grivita brewery to a group of real estate investors
|
Heineken Romania sold the former Grivita brewery in downtown Bucharest, at the end of 2013, to a group of real estate investors, among whom Ionut Dumitrescu, the founder of real estate consultancy firm Eurisko, Balkans.com reported on March 12.
The deal was completed at the end of 2013, when Heineken Romania sold the terrain and buildings attached to the former Grivita factory. The sale was valued at EUR 10 – 15 million.
“At the end of 2013 we finalised the sale process for the property”, according to Onno Rombouts, Managing Director for Heineken Romania. Rombouts didn’t provide any details regarding the value of the transaction or the buyer’s identity.
According to zf.ro, the 2.7 ha property has entered the portfolio of several investors, among which Ionut Dumitrescu, founder of Eurisko, current CBRE Romania. A plan to develop office buildings and a hypermarket on the property passed through City Hall last year, however the plan included the preservation of several historical buildings that were part of the complex.
