Gushing - again, oxygen is the enemy?
ABSTRACT
U.S. researchers have looked into the gushing
potential of different bitter acids as tetrahydro-isoalpha
acids, rho-isoalpha acids, hexahydro-isoalpha acids and
isoalpha acids. With a model system they came to the
conclusion that all of them have an influence on gushing.
Gushing was observed only in products with oxidative
degradation of isoalpha acids yielding in gushing initiators
that are also carried through further processing into the
reduced versions of isoalpha acids.
So take good care of the accurate storage of your
isomerized products in the brewery!

USA, AL: Stone Brewing Company sides with Alabama's craft brewers to change state’s alcohol laws
|
The chief operating officer of Stone Brewing Co. has issued a statement in support of Alabama's local craft brewers, saying that any change to the state's alcohol laws should benefit smaller operations as well as large ones, Blog.al.com reported on March 12.
Stone, a major force in the American craft beer industry, is on Alabama's radar because it is planning to build a new brewing facility east of the Mississippi River. Its combined production, packaging, and distribution center could generate up to $100 million in revenues by year four, the company projects.
But Alabama's current alcohol laws make it essentially ineligible for the new project. The San Diego brewer wants to pair its new facility up with a restaurant, but the state's alcoholic beverage industry is governed by a so-called three-tier system, which prevents brewers from operating their own retail shops.
To address the issue, Sen. Dick Brewbaker, R-Montgomery, and Rep. April Weaver, R-Alabaster, each filed a bill in their respective chambers last week that would have exempted Stone from the three-tier system. The bills would exempt brewers producing at least 25,000 barrels of beer a year from existing retail laws.

USA, CA: Valley Center Brewery expanding
|
Valley Center Brewery, Valley Center's new commercial brewery, will be moving into a brand new, 5,800 sq. ft building in April, complete with a brewing supply store and tasting room that can accommodate hundreds of people. Founded by Bob Marek, Alex Marek, and John Mangan, the new tasting room is poised to become a hit new place for beer-lovers in town, valleycenter.com reported on March 12.
Since September, Valley Center Brewery has been based on the Marek's property, where they have brewed 20 batches for commercial distribution. Their most popular beer, the Cumbres Pale Ale, is already on tap at Portino's. However, with a public tasting room of their own, the brewery is stepping up their game.
"We're taking over the whole building," said Bob Marek. "We're shooting for having a Valley Center opening around April 19, then after that we'll have a much larger grand opening."
If all the brewing equipment is installed and ready to go, there may be a soft opening as soon as April 12. In addition to the tasting room, the site will also include the Valley Center Brewery General Store.

USA, NC: White Street Brewing Company expanding production
|
White Street Brewing Company of Wake Forest is moving production to Youngsville by August, expanding its footprint and tripling its team, Triangle Business Journal reported on March 12.
The current location in Wake Forest is 4,000 square feet, and according to Marketing Representative Harmony VanGundy, the new location, a warehouse, will give the brewery 56,000 square feet to expand production. New equipment is on the way to grow the current 10-barrel system to a 30-barrel system.
“We’ll keep the taproom in Wake Forest, but all the production will move to Youngsville,” says VanGundy “We will hire people. Right now we only have five employees and we’ll grow to 10 or 15 in the next six months.”
This growth is being attributed to a recent deal struck with local distributors, Durham-based Harris Beverages and Raleigh-based R.A. Jefferys Distributing Company. The partnership began in June 2013 and VanGundy says one of their distributors increased sales of White Street beer by 22 percent during the winter months. White Street’s total revenue for 2013 was $650,000.
“Our owners are Dino and Tina Radosta, and Dino funded his own business. We have no investors and he is putting his revenue back into the company,” says VanGundy.

Canada, ON: Nickel Brook Brewing plans expansion in Hamilton
|
Beer may be produced again soon at the former Lakeport Brewing site in Hamilton, as Burlington’s Nickel Brook Brewing is hoping to expand into the location, the Hamilton Spectator reported on March 12
Lakeport was founded in 1992 and operated as an independent brewery for 15 years before being purchased by Labatt Breweries, which subsequently closed the plant in 2010 and stripped it of all brewing equipment in an attempt to dissuade another brewery from taking over the location.
Nickel Brook has been moving equipment purchased from the shuttered Sleeman Breweries facility in Nova Scotia into a warehouse in Hamilton while negotiations continue with the Hamilton Port Authority which oversees the land where the 50,000 square foot building is located.
This move would represent a massive expansion for Nickel Brook, which currently operates out of a less than 20,000 square feet in Burlington. Nickel Brook co-founder John Romano tells the paper that the brewery will retain the Burlington location for “the ‘crazy and funky’ lines of seasonal or niche beers,” while larger scale production would move to the Hamilton facility.
The new brewery would be operated in partnership with Collective Arts Brewing, a Toronto-based company that currently brews under contract at Nickel Brook.

USA, CO: Bootstrap Brewing to rent equipment from Sanitas Brewing in Boulder
|
Bootstrap Brewing Co. announced that it has entered into an agreement to rent Sanitas Brewing Co.'s brewing tank part time as rapidly growing Bootstrap tries to ramp up production and distribution, Boulder County Business Report reported on March 12.
The alternating proprietorship deal will not only allow Niwot-based Bootstrap to brew at Sanitas but also to begin canning its Insane Rush IPA.
Sanitas opened in September in a 15,000-square-foot space in Boulder with plenty of room to spare. But Bootstrap, which opened in the summer of 2012 with 1,200 square feet, now occupies all 3,200 square feet of its building in the Cottonwood Square shopping center. And the latter is quickly running out of brewing capacity.
"We've always been able to supply enough for the tasting room," said Leslie Kaczeus, who co-owns Bootstrap with her husband, Steve. "We just wanted to be able to distribute our beer a little farther than Boulder County."
Bootstrap brewed 437 barrels of beer in 2013 on its 3.5-barrel brewing tank, or brewhouse. But Kaczeus expects that number to at least double this year with increased capacity in Niwot and at Sanitas, which has a 15-barrel brewhouse. In addition to a new 15-barrel fermenter in Niwot, Bootstrap also

USA, NC: Southern Pines Brewing Company opening soon
|
Golf enthusiasts who make their way to Moore County in June for the U.S. Open in Pinehurst will have the opportunity to try craft beer from the newly established Southern Pines Brewing Company, which plans to have beer flowing through the taps by then, Triangle Business Journal reported on March 12.
Micah Niebauer is leaving the Army to run the brewery, a long-time dream of his. He says opening the brewery in time for the golf event is his priority. He’s already got a location on Air Tool Drive, and is having it fixed up with antique woods from old barrels for the bar.
“That’s been the goal since I started the project,” he says. “I’m already signing up to take part in various local festivals and Pinehurst’s preparatory festivals.”
He says his beers – ales, lagers and IPAs – will be branded with the Southern Pines theme, something many people don’t know about.
“Most people in North Carolina have heard of Pinehurst, but don’t know where Southern Pines is. Local people will take pride in it and a name like Southern Pines has a broad appeal,” says Niebauer.

USA, CO: Roaring Fork Beer Company opening in Carbondale this month
|
Chase Engel is head brewer and CEO of Roaring Fork Beer Co., a Carbondale brewery preparing for its grand opening later this month. He’s been planning for a month what brews he wants to offer, including one he calls Nitro Pub Ale, Aspentimes.com reported on March 6.
“It’s been in my head since I was a home brewer nine years ago,” Engel said. “There’s nothing on the market like it.”
It doesn’t follow any distinct, established style, but it is between an amber ale and a brown ale. Engel said he recently had a moment of inspiration on how exactly he wanted to make the Nitro.
Engel has been “marathon brewing” since last week after getting his state and federal licenses and the certificate of occupancy for his brewery from the town of Carbondale.
Two of his creations, Nitro Pub Ale and Freestone Extra Pale Ale, will be available year-round as Roaring Fork Beer Co.’s signature selections. The Freestone will appeal to “hopheads” who like a hopped-up brew. Nitro is maltier.

Canada, NS: Tatamagouche brewery readies for opening
|
Hans Christian Jost and family are expected to open the Tatamagouche Brewing Company in May or June. The village of Tatamagouche is buzzing with excitement, Truro Daily News reported on March 12.
"It's a community brewery. It's going to be everybody's brewery," said Jost.
The plan went into effect after Jost and wife Karen sold Jost Vineyard's two years ago in Malagash. They then bought the library and Houston's Butcher Shop. Revamping the butcher shop and library began last September by expanding the shop and installing two garage door windows that will open to the streets of the village.
"It is something slightly related to wine, but also something different enough to be a challenge," Jost said.
"People will be able to see fermentors ranging from 700 litres to 4,200 litres. There will be a kettle mash tun, where the grains are turned into wort, the process will be visible," Jost said. "The majority of the beer-making process will be open to the public."
Jost's daughter, Christiane, and her partner, Matt Kenny, are also a part of the brewing journey.

USA, CO: 1933 Brewing Company now open in Fort Collins
|
1933 Brewing Co. is now open, marking Fort Collins’ 12th brewery and the farthest south brewery in the city, Coloradoan.com reported on March 12.
The brewery’s owners Jimmy Vanderweide and Cody Pisacka were thrown off when four fermenters were stolen in January from behind the Mason Street building.
At the time, Pisacka said the theft would not keep them from opening in early March, and — on schedule — 1933 opened its doors quietly on March 11.
Manager Amanda Kaan said the brewery’s name, which comes from the year Prohibition ended, lends itself to “an older theme, with a hip look.”
Behind the wood U-shaped bar, head brewer Z. Wilson has five beers on tap, including amber, pale and brown ales; an oatmeal stout; and an IPA. By the weekend, a blonde should be ready to add to the list, as well as a nonalcoholic, house-made ginger ale that Wilson was brewing on March 12.
Wilson said he wasn’t sure yet of 1933’s signature beer. As he gets started, working in five-barrel batches, he will test recipes and then narrow them down based on customer response.
“I’m just going to go with the flow and see what people are liking the most,” he said.

Canada, BC: Old Yale Brewing announces change of ownership
|
Two years after it was saved from closure by a new partnership group, Old Yale Brewing has changed hands once again, Canadian Beer News reported on March 12.
Effective March 1st, the brewery is operating under the ownership of Artisans Ales, a division of the 2Story Group, a family-owned company with interests in various industries including pet food, real estate, and mechanical systems.
Old Yale founder and Brewmaster Larry Caza remains with the company, and has been joined by new Operations Manager Zach VanLeeuwen.
In a press release announcing the sale, it’s noted that Caza “will continue to brew Old Yale’s award winning core lineup of beers, and he looks forward to bringing some great new seasonal and limited release brews to the marketplace in the near future.”

Brazil: Beer sales increase by 12.6% in December 2013 – January 2014

Sales of beer in Brazil increased by 12.6% by volume in December 2013 – January 2014 as compared to the same period in 2012-13, with high temperatures and fixed prices contributing to the growth, Parana Online reported on March 13 citing data by Nielsen.
The same growth trend is estimated to have continued in February, but official data are yet to be released.
The FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Brazil in June-July, is expected to guarantee a further boost to the consumption of beer. As per Nielsen’s estimates, beer sales in South Africa grew by 16.5% during the FIFA World Cup held in the country in 2010.

UK: New spring malting barley variety produces high yields
|
A new spring malting barley variety has helped a Norfolk farm push yields to an all-time high for the crop.
Targeted at brewing, Sanette from Syngenta is already noted for its high yield in trial plots. But its status as a new variety means there there was only limited data on its on-farm performance prior to the 2013 harvest, Angliafarmer.co.uk reported on March 6.
After achieving 210 tonnes from Sanette grown for seed off 24 hectares from the 2013 harvest – equivalent to a hefty 8.75 t/ha – Norfolk grower Fred Case says he has never seen spring barley yield so high on the farm.
Spring barley has been grown for as long as Mr Case can remember on light to medium sandy loam at CF Case & Co, Harpley, near King’s Lynn. About 135 ha is currently planted per season – some for malting and some for seed for Saxon Agriculture, so the business has lots of experience.
“Two years previously we had nearly 7.4 t/ha out of the crop,” explains Mr Case. “But I’ve never done 8.75 t/ha. It was the first year we’ve grown Sanette. It was more than 2 t/ha over anything else I grew.”

Molson Coors Cobra has launched the British lager brand Carling in the Indian market. Carling, which is over 170 year old, claims to be the number one lager brand in the UK. In India, the brand will be available in 300ml bottles, India Retailing reported on March 12.
Molson Coors Cobra, the joint venture between Molson Coors International and Cobra Beer Indian Pvt. Limited, has introduced the brand in the country to expand their portfolio and geographical footprint in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Kandy Anand, President, Molson Coors International, said: "As one of the largest beer markets in Asia, India presents an excellent opportunity for us to expand our global footprint. Our joint venture with Cobra India has seen the successful growth of our existing brands in the market and we are confident in the opportunity Carling presents as a premium lager in this growing market."
India is one of the largest beer markets in the Asia-Pacific region by volume. In 2013, Indians consumed more than 20 million hectolitres of beer.
