Next generation sequencing for next generation hops?
ABSTRACT
Hops have a relatively large and complex genome, which
combined with the fact that hops are dioecious (with male
and female plants), makes the genetics of hops somewhat
difficult to research and understand. Large numbers of
high quality molecular markers are required in order
execute genetic studies with enough finesse to generate
reliable outcomes. These US researchers report the
application of next generation sequencing technology to
the development of high quality molecular makers in hops. The steady improvement in the number and quality of
molecular markers available for hops will provide for more
target cultivar development (for disease resistance or
aroma for example), and may be applied to “true to type”
testing (either in field or of processed product). It might
possibly also contribute fundamentally to our
understanding of the biology of hop and its valuable

Heineken will launch lager margaritas in the US from April as it bids to replicate the success of Anheuser Busch InBev’s Bud Light Ritas line, BeverageDaily.com reported on March 14.
Heineken’s Dos-A-Rita launch differs from AB InBev’s in that it uses a splash of Dos Equis lager, where use of the brew from its Mexican import portfolio is perhaps the key point of difference from mainstream premium light Bud Light.
Another difference is the fact that the 7.2% ABV drink ‘with natural flavors and caramel color’ is sweetened with agave nectar, a ‘natural’ sweetener that is principally fructose.
Surprisingly large 24oz (680ml) single-serve cans and 8oz (227ml) cans in 12 packs will be trialled across southern and mid-western states.
Namely, Texas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, New Mexico North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama.
Predictably, and perhaps with Bud Light Lime Ritas in its sights, Monique Acevedo, VP of innovation at Heineken USA, is talking up the drink’s status “as a more premium and authentic lager margarita that leverages the strength and momentum of the Dos Equis brand”.

USA, FL: Beer distributors, brewers disagree about legalizing half-gallon growlers
|
Florida allows craft breweries to fill and sell unlimited amounts of gallon- and quart-sized beer jugs, popularly called growlers. But half-gallon growlers, the most-popular size in the 47 other states that allow them, are banned, Associated Press reported on March 16.
That has long vexed the typically small Florida craft beer makers, who ask: Why does the Legislature refuse to change a law it can't explain and that seemingly goes against its opposition to overregulation in other industries?
"I don't know," Senate President Don Gaetz said when recently asked why half-gallon growlers are illegal.
But the Panhandle Republican, who says he's a free-market, anti-regulation, pro-business legislator, knows why the repeal is facing long odds again this year: a friend and major GOP donor, who happens to be a Budweiser distributor, asked him to support a bill that includes several provisions that the craft beer industry says will slow their rapid growth and could cause some to close.
While that sounds at odds with his principles, Gaetz acknowledged he will support whatever Anheuser-Busch InBev distributor Lewis Bear tells him to support.

Canada, AB: Big Rock Brewery in Calgary announces 2013 financial results
|
Big Rock Brewery Inc. announced on March 17 its financial results for the year ended December 30, 2013, according to Wall Street Journal.
Big Rock reported a decline in both net income and operating profit in 2013 as compared to the previous year. Net income for the year ended December 30, 2013 was C$2.6 million compared to C$4.1 million in the year ended December 30, 2012. Operating profit for 2013 was C$3.3 million compared to C$5.6 million in 2012. The declines were attributed to a 15 per cent reduction in the total volume of Big Rock's sales, which decreased from 217,646 hl for 2012 to 184,802 hl for 2013.
Volume-driven price promotions utilized in 2011 had been reduced in 2012 and were scaled back even further for 2013, resulting in comparatively lower sales volumes but higher profit margin per hl. However, Big Rock's sales volumes were also negatively impacted in its core Alberta market by both a significant influx of craft beer products in the marketplace and the lingering effects on some customers of severe flooding in the second quarter.

USA, NC: New Belgium Brewing to start construction on Asheville facility
|
New Belgium Brewing is set to commence the construction of a new $175 mln brewery in Asheville, North Carolina from 1 May 2014, Drinks Business Review reported on March 17.
To be established in a 133,000 ft˛ space, the new brewery will have a capacity to produce around half million barrels of beer annually. It will also feature a liquid center tasting room.
New Belgium Brewing spokesman Bryan Simpson said that the company is investing $175 million in the project over a seven-year stretch.
Set to become operational by 2015-end, the new brewery will produce Fat Tire amber ale and the 1554 black lager.
In addition, the brewery is establishing a separate 100,000 ft˛ distribution center. This new project is expected create 140 new jobs in the region.
New Belgium is one of two new major breweries in the Asheville area.

USA, IN: The Evil Czech Brewery has new facility in Mishawaka
|
The Evil Czech Brewery opened its doors on March 14 and they have already hired close to 70 employees. The General Manager said they had a great opening during the weekend, ABC 57 News reported on March 16.
The Evil Czech Brewery is working to open for lunch by April 1st.
Shawn Erickson of Evil Czech said, “Rejuvenating the community was a big one and also the fact that beer is the new wine.” Erickson said they are still looking to hire 10 to 15 servers.
“We really wanted to bring life back into the brewing culture, so that’s why we chose the old Mishawaka Brewery,” Erickson said.
Erickson said investing in St. Joseph County was an easy decision.
“Michigan has a ton of breweries everywhere and there’s a lot more competition, and there’s a lot more of drinking local where here there’s not as many microbreweries open,” Erickson said.

USA, WI: Titletown Brewing expanding in Green Bay
|
Titletown and developer Smet Construction Services broke ground on March 18 for Titletown’s new production facility and tap room in former Larsen Canning Co. buildings in Green Bay. The $3.5 million development also will include retail shops and office space. A banquet room is part of the long-range plan, Green Bay Press Gazette reported on March 18.
Titletown Brewing opened in 1996. It is a combined micro-brewery and restaurant.
Titletown provides draft beer to bars and restaurants, but has not had space for a bottling operation. The new facility will allow it to do so, and distribute its products to a wider audience.
“A natural growth of the craft beer industry is when you get your product into more locations,” said Brent Weycker, president of Titletown Brewing. “I grew up over here, too. This is exciting for me. This is a way to get people to come downtown and stay.”
Production will move west across from the existing facility. “We are kind of creating a campus,” Weycker said.
Weycker said the expansion will add about 10 jobs and increase production from 1,800 barrels annually to 5,000 barrels.

USA, IL: Old Bakery Beer Company to open in Alton next year
|
After getting the go-ahead from the Alton city council, plans are fermenting to open the Old Bakery Beer Company early next year. The brewhouse and restaurant will be located on the site of at least three bakeries over the last century, STLtoday.com reported on March 17.
James Rogalsky, a homebrewer and former assistant brewer at Urban Chestnut Brewing Company, will serve as the head brewer. The plan is to make four beers all year — a wheat IPA, a rye pale ale, a mild brown ale and a Pilsner style beer — and to supplement these with a rotating schedule of seasonal beers. Beers from other local breweries will also be on tap.
The company plans to brew 15 barrels at a time, 465 gallons, with the capacity to brew 10,000 gallons in a year.

USA, KS: Tallgrass Brewing Company to open a brewpub in Manhattan this year
|
Tallgrass Brewing Co. has announced plans to open a brewpub in Manhattan, Kansas before the end of 2014, Pitch Weekly reported on March 18.
The Tallgrass Taphouse will seat about 200 in a 5,900-square-foot space. They will have a full-service restaurant, taps of Tallgrass beers (such as Buffalo Sweat, 8-Bit Pale and Halcyon Unfiltered Wheat) and beers brewed on-site in a "test kitchen"/"small-scale brewing facility."
Beers being brewed at the Taphouse could find their way into the Tallgrass distribution stream, too.
Tallgrass is also promising taps of "rare and one-of-a-kind offerings created by Tallgrass's friends at other breweries around the country."

USA, VA: Fair Winds Brewing to open in Lorton this fall
|
Last year Fair Winds Brewing Co. raised funds to open a brewery in Northern Virginia, and now the owners are in talks to lease a 12,000-square-foot brewery space in Lorton, Washington Business Journal reported on March 18.
Owner Casey Jones was originally hoping to locate in Merrifield to take advantage of that neighborhood's substantial residential density, but he could not find a space that worked in that part of Fairfax County.
"Commercial real estate has been our bane," he said. "In Virginia, for a brewery, you have to have industrial zoning, so you're really talking about Lorton or Chantilly."
If all goes well, Fair Winds could open by early fall, Jones said. In the meantime, he and brewers Todd Parker and Shawn Johnson have been testing out recipes in a garage to get ready for the fall. When Fair Winds opens, there will be four staple beers: the Howling Gale IPA, a pale ale, a red and a kolsch.
Fair Winds is tentatively setting aside 2,000 square feet for the tasting room. The owners also want to keep the production capability front and center, so they plan to put the brewing equipment behind glass so it's visible from the tasting room.

USA, NC: Draft Line Brewing to open in Fuquay-Varina this spring

Fuquay-Varina will get a second craft brewery by the end of May, if everything goes as planned for Scott Palmieri and Scott Wood, owners of Draft Line Brewing, Triangle Business Journal reported on March 18.
The two Scotts have been friends since Wood, a general contractor, built Palmieri’s house in the late '90s. Wood is a Holly Springs native and Palmieri moved to Fuquay-Varina from Buffalo, New York.
“I’ve been brewing beer at home for about eight years,” says Palmieri. “I’m an engineer by trade. I’m a hands-on kind of person. I love the process, and I love creating new things. We created a homebrew system in my garage where we can brew 40-gallon batches at a time.”
The brewers brought on an investor who contributed about $450,000 for the facility and the brewing system, which will allow 30 barrels to be brewed at once, or 930 gallons of beer.
“It’s a large micro-brewery,” Palmieri says. “We are bringing a head brewer on. When we started drafting the business plan and looking at the budget, it was pretty clear up front we couldn’t run a business, deliver beer, deal with paperwork and deal with brewing the beer.”

USA, VT: Four Quarters Brewing opens four barrel brewery in Winooski
|
Four Quarters Brewing opened in Winooski last weekend. Its beers — including Janus, Horn of the Moon and Opus Dei — alternately resurrects historical styles and evokes mythological figures, Sevendaysvt.com reported on March 18.
Founder and brewer Brian Eckert is not only a beer geek but a mythology and astronomy buff. "My interests outside of beer and food are sort of just trying to wrap my head around the universe," says Eckert, who declares himself fascinated with the intersection of religion and beer — that is, with beers brewed by monks.
To wit, he's brewed a patersbier — which means "father's beer" — a low-alcohol abbey ale traditionally brewed by Trappist monks to be consumed within their monasteries. (Eckert's version, called Opus Dei, is a sessionable 4-percent-alcohol beer.)
Eckert borrowed the Latin name for hops, Humulus lupulus, for his Opus Humulus, a 3.9-percent-alcohol-ale "that retains a spicy character from the yeast but has a good healthy dose of hops," he says.

Australia’s Carlton & United Breweries has revealed that Cascade Bright Ale is its most successful draught craft beer release in years, The Shout reported on March 17.
Speaking at the Cascade First Harvest Ale festivities in Tasmania, head brewer Mike Unsworth said the subdued bitterness of Bright Ale - launched six months ago - had won excellent feedback from consumers – particularly women.
“We’ve got three different types of hops in the Bright Ale, but it’s not overly bitter. What you are actually getting is some really good aromas and flavours,” he said.
Craig Maclean, CUB’s general manager of craft beer and cider, added: “Just to let everybody know just how well it’s going sales-wise, six months from launch, Bright Ale’s actually our most successful craft draught launch since Fat Yak.”

Hong Kong: Hong Kong Beer Company relaunched by new owners

Hong Kong Beer Company Limited, established in 1995, was acquired in August 2013 by Devin Otto Kimble and Daniel Flores, the founders of Singapore's multiple award-winning Brewerkz Restaurants & Microbreweries. Brewerkz was a pioneer of the local craft beer movement when it opened in 1997 and since that time the Singapore beer industry has grown to nearly a dozen breweries and all but one of them specializes in making craft beer. Looking to be part of the same kind of vibrancy in the local Hong Kong scene, the new owners have re-launched HKBC and put in place a team with over 100 years of craft beer industry experience in Asia and the United States, Menafn reported on March 13.
