Pesticide residues and nitrate in dry-hopped beers
ABSTRACT
Until now it was unclear if dry-hopping has an
impact on the nitrate and pesticide residues transfer
from hops into beer. German researchers
performed extensive dry-hopping trials and
monitored the nitrate and pesticides levels
throughout the process. The results show that
nitrate is transferred quantitatively, which means
that depending on variety and amount, the final
values vary between 3-90 mg/l. Comparing those
values with different foods where nitrate is found in
a range of 40-8000 mg/l dry-hopped beers can be
considered of very little concern. And also the
monitored pesticides did not increase with dryhopping,
although up to 500g of hops/hL were used. Read more

Brazil: Ambev starts brewing Budweiser in the state of Rio de Janeiro
|
Ambev, Brazil’s largest beer maker and part of the world’s No. 1 brewer AB InBev, on March 21 inaugurated two new production lines for Budweiser beer at its brewery in Pirai (Rio de Janeiro), Folha Vale do Café reports.
The plant, purchased by the company in 2007, will become Ambev’s second facility to produce the global brand in Brazil.
Budweiser was launched in Brazil in 2011 and until now has been produced at Ambev’s Jacarei brewery in the state of Sao Paulo.
Owing to an investment of R$165 mln, the Pirai brewery has installed two lines dedicated solely to production of Budweiser. Over the last five years, the company invested a total of R$ 455 mln in the facility.

UK: Beer duty cut by one pence per pint in the new Budget
|
UK beer duty will be cut by one pence per pint, the chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne announced last week.
The Budget was announced in the House of Commons on March 19 which saw a huge cheer erupt as the chancellor confirmed that beer duty would be cut by one pence per pint, while duty on cider has been frozen.
It is the second cut to beer duty in as many years.
Brigid Simmonds, British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) chief executive, said: “This is fantastic news, and George Osborne is again the toast of Britain’s brewers, pubs and pubgoers. It will protect over 7,000 jobs over two years, mostly jobs of younger people in Britain’s pubs.
“It also shows that the Government has understood our case, that taxes on British beer had become far too high, and action was long overdue.
“I hope this becomes a trend in future budgets for this British-made, lower-strength drink.”
Julian Grocock, chief executive of the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) said, “SIBA applauds the Chancellor’s decision to take another penny off the pint, following last year’s historic decision to scrap the unpopular escalator. It is good to see that this government believes in providing long-term support for the

Myanmar: Alcohol consumption rising in Myanmar
|
The rate of alcohol consumption is rising in Myanmar, with local production of beer, wine and spirits at more than 25 million gallons annually, according to the local reports.
Tens of thousands of gallons of wine, beer, and hard alcohol—both legal and illegal—are being imported from foreign countries and are now penetrating the local market.
There are state-owned beer and wine factories in Myanmar, but the Myanmar Investment Commission has also allowed permits for foreign beer companies to operate here, subject to scrutiny by respective state and regional government authorities.
The foreign beer companies will cooperate with local firms owned by the citizens as a joint venture.
Taxation of alcohol, beer and wine is only 50 percent, whether it is imported or domestic.
According to the announcement of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development, alcohol and beer manufacturing in local was 24.8 million gallons in 2011-2012 fiscal year. During the current fiscal year (2013-2014), 25.2 million gallons of alcohol and beer were produced within nine month up to the end of December.

USA: MillerCoors sees promising numbers for its Miller Lite can sales
|
While MillerCoors isn't claiming victory just yet on the impact that the Miller Lite throwback-style packaging has had on overall brand sales, the numbers so far are promising for Miller Lite can sales and the company has extended the availability of its packaging through Sept. 30, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on March 24.
Miller Lite can sales have increased more than 4.7 percent this year through March 1. During the week ended Feb. 22, Miller Lite’s change in share of total U.S. beer sales (for cans) from the same week one year ago increased by 0.24 percent. This was the first time Miler Lite can sales gained share since March 2013. Still, overall brand sales are down 2 percent, according to Nielsen data.
Jonathan Stern, director of media relations for MillerCoors, said re-introducing the original can caught the attention of millennial beer drinkers.
“Since millennial beer drinkers are into authenticity and heritage, and with Miller Lite being the original light beer, we believe this is causing a lot of interest," Stern said.
Tom Long, MillerCoors chief executive officer, admitted in a Nov. 6 earnings release that the company was “not satisfied with the on-premise distribution or volume performance” of the premium light brands.

Zambia: Zambian Breweries announces beer price hikes
|
Zambian Breweries Plc announced increases of between 3.6 and 19% in the recommended retail price of its clear beer alcoholic beverages on its non-returnable bottle packs and the sorghum-brewed Eagle lager effective as from 24th March, Zambian Watchdog reported.
Making the announcement, Company Managing Director Anele Malumo explained that the increases are a combined result of inflation and the 50% increase in Excise Duty on clear beer from 40% to 60% that the government implemented as part of the 2014 National Budget.
Mr Malumo said Zambian Breweries has until now absorbed the excise increase on its non-returnable packs in order to mitigate the smuggling that would have resulted from having higher beer prices relative to regional peers.
He stated that the company has however noted that the increased excise duty has been an added direct cost to the non returnable bottle product types and has detrimentally affected company profitability.
And Mr Malumo said with the excise-induced increase in prices on its beer products, Zambian Breweries Plc has since January 2014 witnessed a decrease in monthly beer sales volumes from prior levels due to consumer price elasticity.
He said consequently, the company anticipates that its total tax remittances to Government will decrease in tandem compared to

Ethiopia: Bedele Beer to be available in steel coated cans for the first time in the country’s beer history
|
For the first time in Ethiopia’s beer production trend, Bedele Beer, under the Netherlands’ beer giant, Heineken, has become the first locally made beer brand to reach its customers with steel coated cans, EthioSports reported on March 22.
Various types of liquor products with aluminum or steel-coated packages such as beer, beverages, juice, soft drinks or even alcoholic drinks have been common in the international market. It has, however, not been available for locally produced products.
Numerous microbrewers are now offering their products in cans throughout the world.
The drinks and beverage production sector is one of the highly privileged areas among the manufacturing sector that has been identified as one of the government’s most prioritized sectors listed under the five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP).
Beer producers and beverage companies face a shortage of bottles as the nation only has one single glass and bottle factory. Due to this shortage, most beverage companies are shifting to packaging their produces in plastic bottles.

Australia: Barley Australia accredits three new varieties as malting barley
|
The Board of Barley Australia has announced the successful accreditation of three new varieties:
Macquarie (TI677)
Wimmera (VB 0432)
Admiral (WI 4259)
These varieties were accredited as Malting Barley following the evaluation trials conducted in association with the Malting and Brewing Barley Technical Committee assessment under the malting barley evaluation process.
It should be noted that Macquarie, whilst meeting the evaluation criteria for malting barley accreditation, is considered to have limited potential for grower uptake and market demand, given the availability of other more widely-adapted varieties. Accordingly, Macquarie will be acknowledged as an Accredited Variety, but not a Preferred Variety on the Barley Australia website.
Wimmera is a medium rainfall variety and is likely to suit export malt markets with medium to high fermentability requirements.
Admiral is suited to a wide area of medium rainfall across Australia. It should be noted that the VT prefix for Admiral in its trial stages has been dropped and it is known as Admiral barley. It is aimed at export markets requiring high DP and high fermentability.
As with all previous accreditations, it is the market that will determine the success of these new varieties. The Barley Australia malting barley evaluation and accreditation process is recognized as the required standard

Australia: Australia poised to become a major supplier of new barley variety extending shelf life of beer
|
Australia is poised to become a major global supplier of a new variety of barley that extends the shelf life of beer, ABC Online reported on March 23.
The variety, called Charger, slows down how quickly the beer deteriorates and develops a stale papery flavour.
Charger is owned by European brewing companies Carlsberg and Heineken and was developed with researchers from the University of Adelaide.
"You can actually expect at least a 50 per cent longer freshness of the beer," Carlsberg's director of applied research Birgitte Skadhauge said.
"It is something that's having a significant impact on the quality of the beer, especially in warm climates like you have here in Australia."
The secret to Charger's longer-lasting influence is that one of the enzymes in it does not work properly.
That enzyme is called lipoxygenase, and during malting it converts lipids and fats in the grain into the stale flavour.
Carlsberg screened more than 15,000 barley lines before it found one with the "lazy" lipoxygenase enzymes it was looking for.
That trait is known as Null Lox and it has been bred into several barley varieties grown overseas and used in beer sold in Europe.
Charger is the Australian version.
"We are actually transferring, to some degree, European genetic backgrounds
