Of beer, an enthusiast has said that it could never be bad, but that some brands might be better than others.

    • 2. Brewery News

Scottish & Newcastle announced on August 15 results for the half year to June 2003 from its 50% owned joint venture Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH). EBITDA grew 8% (in US dollars) in Q2 up to US$130 million. Operating profit increased 3% and reached US$130 million. Sales increased 9% to US$376 million. BBH remains confident in the growth prospects for its markets, and anticipates its performance for the full year to be in line with expectations. Beer volumes of BBH registered a strong recovery in Q2, a 10% increase. BBH Russia increased beer volumes in the second quarter by 10% too. The second quarter, as anticipated, showed a strong improvement in volume trends from the first quarter, both within BBH and for the markets as a whole. BBH remains confident that full year volumes for the Russian market will show high single digit growth, said S&N. In Russia, the changes to Baltika’s distribution network initiated during the low season are largely completed, leading to a much-improved performance in the second quarter...more info

Tsingtao Brewery, China's largest beer maker, 9.9% owned by Anhueser-Busch, announced on August 13 a 15% drop in second-quarter net profit. The fall was attributed to the SARS outbreak that kept beer drinkers away from bars and restaurants, and higher barley prices that inflated costs. Tsingtao's first-half profit fell 3.8 % to 108.8 million yuan. For the full year, Tsingtao's net profit is expected to rise 12.8 % to 251 million yuan, according to the average forecast of 13 analysts polled by Reuters Research. Tsingtao earned 49.1 million yuan (US$5.9 million) for the three months ended in June, according to Reuters calculations from first-half figures. After its first quarter results, the company warned that the SARS outbreak would affect its next set of figures. That said, the ¥49.1m did come in higher than many analysts expected. "China is going through an exceptionally hot summer and beer consumption is growing," said Citigroup Smith Barney Director of Research Charles Cheung. Tsingtao holds about a 13 % share of the mainland beer market, the world's second-largest after the United States and growing at 6% a year...more info

Carlsberg Breweries A/S is increases shareholding in Vietnam, announced the company in a statement. Carlsberg Breweries A/S acquires the Danish Industrialization Fund for Developing Countries' (IFU) shareholdings of 25 % in South-East Asia Brewery Ltd. in Hanoi and 15 % in Hue Brewery Ltd. in the central part of Vietnam for a total of DKK 95 million. Carlsberg Breweries already owns 35 % of the two Vietnamese breweries and hence increases its shareholding to 60 % and 50 %, respectively. The remaining share capital in South-East Asia Brewery is owned by a Vietnamese state owned company, and the local government of Hue owns the remaining shares in Hue Brewery. The acquisition is subject to approval by local authorities. South-East Asia Brewery brews and sells both the premium brand Carlsberg and the local brand Halida. Hue Brewery brews and sells the local brand Huda. In total, the two breweries hold a market share of about 9%. The yearly market growth rate over the past three years has been approx. 4%, and with a yearly per capita consumption of only 9 litres there is a large growth potential. Carlsberg has been co-operating with IFU in Vietnam since 1993.

      3. Malt News

An interesting question is, how much beer will be brewed and malt used in Europe, the EU and all adjacent countries. The analysts answer. The year started with bad losses of sales in most countries, Germany seemed the hardest hit by the introduction of an obligatory deposit on beer cans, but even Russia did not escape the winter slump. The long and very cold winter had certainly an effect. Since the middle of June a summer heat wave moved from Mediterranean regions to the whole of the Continent and finally even to the U.K. and Scandinavia. There are few countries, which report beer sales on a monthly basis, therefore the German plus of 9 % in June is the only figure we have, but a hopeful sign for all of Europe. The extraordinary high summer temperatures are supposed to last through the month of August. It is hoped that beer sales during this period will make up for most (or all?) of the earlier losses. Malt stocks should become smaller due to good domestic call-offs, and export shipments seem to have picked up as well, as licence bookings indicate.

      4. Barley News

According to Ukrainian Agrimarket, “feed barley continues to enjoy high demand on the part of exporters in pots, whose bids have increased within the last few days up to $128 to 132 per tonne on a CPT-port basis from $120 to 125 per tonne in the end of the previous week. Hryvnia contracts, which at the end of last week were concluded at prices 630 to 650 hryvnias per tonne (EXW), at the beginning of this week have reached the level 670 to 680 hryvnias per tonne (EXW, inland elevators).”

China boosts Copeland barley varietyJ, Saskatoon newsroom reported on August 14. In an industry historically conservative about the malting grain it uses, a new variety is poised to become a significant player in just a few years. CDC Copeland, developed by Bryan Harvey of the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, is already finding market acceptance. Michael Brophy, Canadian Wheat Board manager of malting barley marketing, said the board expects to announce this fall a sizable contracting program for CDC Copeland to capitalize on this opp-ortunity. The area contracted will depend on several matters, particularly how much registered seed is available. But there is no doubt that export customers, particularly in China, are interested. One of the attractions of CDC Copeland is that its malt produces a light coloured beer...more info
