Brewery News

UK: Greene King purchases its Scottish rival Belhaven

The UK’s Greene King Brewer said on August 22 that it agreed to buy its rival from Scotland -Belhaven for 187 million pounds. "It is a unique opportunity for us to gain immediate scale in the important Scottish market," Rooney Anand, stated Chief Executive of Greene King, according to Associated Press.

The 625-pence-per-share offer, for the entire issued capital of the company, represents a 15.6 percent premium to Belhaven's closing price on Friday, and will be partly funded through a share placement to raise 47 million pounds, it added. The deal will add Belhaven's 200 tenanted pubs and 100 managed pubs to Greene King's estate of 2,064.

The Synergies expected to be generated in the first year of about 3 million pounds, rise to 5 million pounds over the next two years, said Greene King. "Belhaven will retain everything at the heart of its success, including its name, its brands, and its brewery, but will also benefit from being part of a larger group opening up new markets for its products," Anand stressed.

China: Tsingtao will build a brewery in the Northwest of China

Tsingtao Brewery Co from China, stated that it intends to build a brewery in the province of Shaanxi, in the Northwest of China for 160 million yuan ($19.7 million).Tsingtao, according to the China Knowledge Press as of August 22, will own 55 % of the new plant through its unit in Xi'an, the capital of the province, the company said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange on August 22.

August 19, Tsingtao said first-half profit rose 20 % from a year earlier to 173.6 million yuan from 144.8 million yuan a year earlier. Sales increased to 4.46 billion yuan from 3.87 billion yuan. The company sold 2 million kiloliters of beer in the first half, up 9.7 %.

According to Tsingtao, Chinese breweries produced a pooled 14.5 million kiloliters of beer in the first half which is a gain of 2.6 %.

UK: Beer concedes bit by bit its place to wine

A new report reveal that for the first time British shoppers are spending more on wine than on beer. An estimated £1.97bn a year is now spent on wine, compared to £1.79bn on beer. Experts say the swing is the result of a number of factors, including clever marketing, the lack of a major sporting event this summer (traditionally a boost for beer sales) and, significantly, a substantial increase in women's drinking the Independent reported on August 21.

Craig Smith, the editor of Marketing magazine, which will publish the results of the TNS-conducted survey in this week's issue, said wine sales had risen by £250m since last year, while sales of beer had declined slightly.

"We are now in the era of branded wine," Mr Smith said. "Previously, wines had been a fairly impenetrable sector for most grocery consumers, who were faced with a big wall of bottles and didn't really know what to choose."

The consumption of alcohol by British women increased by 27 % between 1998 and 2003, with this group now accounting for 55 % of all wine which is drunk in the United Kingdom.

Finland: Finnish Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry asks for beer tax lowering

The Finnish Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry said in a statement on August 23, that the Finish brewing industry can compete with import beer only in the case the beer tax is decreased. Sweden is considering lowering its beer tax by 30 % and Finland should follow follow this example, by at least as much according to the same release.

It was evaluated that 39 million litres of beer will be imported this year. Every tenth litre of beer is brought from abroad. Estonia's beer tax, for instance, is just a fraction of Finland's beer tax.

The research, conducted by the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry, also investigated imports of other alcoholic beverages. This year 6 million litres of cider, 8.2 million litres of wine and 12.7 million litres of spirits and wine will be imported.

Russia: Results for H1 of 2005-the lowest industry status for last five years

As reported by Federal Service of State Statistics, for the first half
of 2005, the dynamics of brewery market was 3.7% compared to same period of 2004.

“This rate is the lowest for the last five years”, - commented the head of the Executive Committee of Russian Brewers Union Viacheslav Mamontov on the Rosstat data , according to Russian Brewers Union “The downturn of brewery market is becoming more and more obvious – even the usual seasonal increase of the market in summer fails to change the situation in general”.

The continuing administrative pressure (unseen barriers for beer advertising, excise policy, transport costs rise) combined with a considerable saturation of the market in central regions could in the nearest future lead not only to a decrease of economic effectiveness of enterprise but also to a negative social consequences.

Particularly, the establishing tendency of reduction of strong alcohol consumption in favor of low alcohol ones could break.

The shift of alcohol consumption in the state in favor of low alcohol products is one of key factors of improving the health state of nation. In this situation, the state is able to use economic methods to stimulate this process and inspire a further change of ...

Barley News

Ukraine: 95% of projected area harvested

Tre Ukrainian farmers harvested 4.26 million hectares of barley as of August 22. This represents 95% of projected area. 9.62 million tonnes of grain were collected at an average yield of 2.26 tonnes per hectare according to Agrarian Policy Ministry

Odessa Oblast obtained with 888,400 tonnes of barley the biggest crop among Ukrainian regions.

In 2004 as of August 21 the farmers harvested barley from 4.34 million hectares (93 % of projected area). The crop was of 11.84 million tonnes with an average yield of 2.73 tonnes per hectare.

Scotland: Professionals’ views on barley crops and prices

Malting barley is the most important cereal crop in Scotland. Prices were thoroughly unrewarding in recent years, according to the Business Scotsman as of August 22, but Josh Dadd of HGCA is optimistic regarding this year's harvest.

He affirmed: "There is some concern over the quality of both the German and French malting barley crop. This has pushed prices higher, with French barley now trading at EUR126 (GBP86) per tonne. Recent rains have not only affected the speed of the harvest, but also led to high nitrogen levels. There is anticipation within the trade that a proportion of French malting barley will be downgraded to feed quality. UK, Swedish and Danish malting barley appears to be of good quality with Germany already buying some English grain."

But there is a increasing perception among UK farmers that unless they are promised higher prices next year they might be better off to grow less and collect the new single farm payment. This measure lies at the heart of the reforms of the Common Agricultural Policy and allows farmers to collect a large cheque even if they produce very little.

However, Andersons which is a leading firm of consultants, in its latest ...
