Brewery News
Czech Republic: Czech Republic register increasing beer exports with estimates of 5 M. hectolitres for 2005
Czech Association of Breweries and Malt Houses announced on August 25 that czech beer exports will presumably rise to an estimated volume of 3 million hectolitres in 2005 from 2.64 million hectolitres in 2004.In the first half, exports increased by 21 % to 1.46 million hectolitres and their share in total production is increasing.
Jan Vesely, the Association chairman said "We are among ten largest exporters in the world, with Mexico on the top of the ladder".
The biggest exporter is Plzensky Prazdroj with a 23 % share, followed by Pivovary Staropramen with 19 % and Budejovicky Budvar with 18 %.
The main portion of Czech beer exports, about 39 %, goes to Germany, then to Slovakia, UK, USA, Sweden, Russia and Hungary.

USA: Pennsylvania’s new law allows beer distributors to open on Sundays
The Pennsylvania’ distributors of beer are permitted to open on Sundays, so that drinkers can go to their local distributor. The new law does not require distributors to be open on Sunday; however, according to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, 21 of the 41 in Luzerne County will be open for business, Citizenvoice announced on August 29.
Dave Shipula, Beer Super owner and president of the Malt Beverage Distributors Association of Pennsylvania, thinks the move is long overdue. After the state allowed some of its liquor stores to open on Sunday, he felt it was only a matter of time before the distributors got their chance.
The distributors were the last institution regulated by the PLCB not permitted to operate on Sundays, Shipula said. He felt the restriction was putting the distributors at an unfair disadvantage.
Shipula and the state Malt Beverage Distributors Association had been fighting for the right to operate on Sundays for years, but did not get anywhere until recently.
"I think the turning point seemed to be when the liquor stores started a pilot program to be open on Sundays," he said.
Distributors are taking advantage. Employees anticipate they will be busy, especially on the eve of football season.

USA: Decreased demand for hops
USA exports around 70% of the annually grown hops. However, as countries improve the quality of the crop, many growers find it harder to survive, KVEW communicated on August 25. Dick Olsen has grown hops near prosser for 25 years. He says this year's harvest is nothing unusual.
"I think this is a pretty typical year for growing hops, it has been difficult It not only produces more to the acre, instead of 10 bails to the acre it produces about 18 bails to the acre and instead of about 9% alpha acids, it produces sometimes as high as 20% alpha acids," said Olsen.
The higher quality hops have led to an over supply, driving down demand. "That resulted in a lack of new contracts because there was so much in the market place and as a result the prices were decreased and growers had to remove acres," said George with the Washington Hop Commission. n fact, experts say farmers use 20% less land for hops today, than they did six years ago. Industry experts say the once flooded hops market is clearing up.
"As a result brewers are now realizing that they may not be able to purchase
