    • 2. Brewery News

Danish brewing giant, Carlsberg Breweries, signed a deal on October 2 to acquire a 51 % stake in Serbian brewery Pivara Celarevo for €53 million, Serbian press reported on October 2. Under the agreement, Carlsberg will be obliged to make a public offer for the remaining 49 % of shares at €43.12 per share. Celarevo General Manager Mirko Stupar told a press conference that the company was sold for eight times its estimated value of €6.4 million. Celarevo has 1,200 shareholders, 480 of whom work in the company, said Stupar, adding that each shareholder will raise an average of €41,000 from the sale. The Danish brewer pledged to invest substantial funding over the next seven years to boost production and sales of Celarevo's sole brand Lav, as well as its own Tuborg and Carlsberg brands. The new owner also promised to keep all 480 workers over the next three years and offered lump-sum payments for voluntary redundancies, housing programmes and employee training. The Serbian market has laid good foundations for development and the arrival of foreign companies, said Carlsberg Breweries Executive Vice President Paul Bergqvist. He added that the acquisition will allow Carlsberg, which already owns breweries in Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania, to strengthen its position in the Balkans...more info

Grupo Modelo, Mexico's largest brewery, said on October 2 it expects 5 % growth in its 2003 U.S. exports and it plans to up prices on two of its leading brands. The beer company exports to the United States an average of 9 million hectoliters every year, a company's spokesman told Reuters. "We hope to increase (our exports to the U.S.) about 5 %," it said. Half-owned by the world's leading brewer Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., Modelo plans to increase its export prices on 12 oz. Corona and Corona Light beers, its two top sellers north of the border, effective Jan. 1, 2004. Modelo also sells the Pacifico, Negra Modelo and Modelo Especial brands in the United States. The last time Modelo increased prices on beer shipped to the United States was in March 2002, when it raised them 3.5 %, the spokesman said.

The Russian beer maker, ZAO Moscow-Efes Brewery, a subsidiary of Efes Breweries International, has started brewing beer at its new brewery in Rostov-on-Don. About US$ 24.7 million were invested in the project. It is the thid Efes brewery to begin operations in the country and will have a capacity of 1 million hl per annum. The brewery plans to reach full capacity next year, producing the Efes Pilsener, Stary Melnik and Bely Medved brands. Efes’ analysts forecast in 2003 the new brewery will produce about 250 thousand hl of beer. The construction of the brewery started in February 2002. Efes completely modernized and reorganized the production capacity of the Coca-Colla Rostov Bottlers plant.

German beer exports increased in the first six months of the year versus the same period in 2002, government figures showed on October 2. The volume of foreign sales of beer rose by 6.8 % from 4.9 million hectolitres to 5.3 million hectolitres. The exports were worth €363.1 million, up 5 %, the Federal Statistical Office said. Italy was the biggest market for German beer in the first six months of the year, spending €90.6 million, 18 percent more than in the same period last year. Britain (€47.7 million, minus 3.8 percent) was second biggest importer, followed by Spain (€21.8 million, minus 4.6 %) and France (€21.6 million, plus 7.5%).

      3. Malt News

USA: Great Falls trade union officials are calling a meeting Monday evening to air concerns about the construction of International Malting Co.'s $50 million to $65 million malt plant north of Great Falls. "Right now we are trying to define exactly what our concerns are and perhaps after Monday's meeting we can do that," said Carpenters Union Local 286 Business Manager David Warner. Warner and Joe Pejko, president of the Central Labor Council, said although they've had one meeting with IMC Director of Corporate Engineering Philip VanRensburg, it's been tough to get the company's ear. But Ralph Beltrone, president of Allsteel Building Co./Beltrone General Contracting, says Great Falls trade unions haven't done much of a job building a relationship with IMC either. "They are putting out bids on a Web site through the Billings engineering firm CTA, very similar to the way the U.S. Air Force puts out bids," Beltrone said. Warner argues that the malt plant project falls under the state's definition of heavy highway construction so the union pay scale for carpenters is $19.85 per hour. Union pay scale of carpenters on building-class projects is $15 per hour. But the malt plant isn't being built by a public entity and isn't subject to state construction classification regulations, Beltrone said. "The union could have gone with building-class wages on the office," Beltrone said...more info

      4. Barley News

Almost two million tonnes of barley - spring and winter - was harvested in Scotland, up about 17 % versus 2002 and the biggest Scottish crop for at least 15 years, Allied Grain, one of the big players in the cereals and oilseed market, said in The Scotsman issue from October 2. Kevin Mills, UK commercial director for Allied, said: "It has been a fantastic Scottish harvest, The rest of the UK is nothing like it." Prices, in spite of the annual concern about where open-ended contracts for malting barley will settle, are also well above those of 2002 - in fact, the highest for five years. Spring barley, almost all of malting potential, averaged 5.9 tonnes per hectare, winter barley 7.37 tonnes. It has been a vintage year for spring barley growers in north-east Scotland in particular, said Ian Keith, Allied’s barley director: "Last year many spring crops struggled to reach 60 kg/ha. This year, most have been over 70." Without speculating on malting premiums, Keith said: "I have no doubt that because of the quality, as nitrogens have also been low, maltsters will have filled every available store. Quite a lot of that could be carried over to next year." The UK barley total is estimated at 6.254 million tonnes, up marginally on last year’s 6.192 million. Winter-sown oilseed rape yields in Scotland averaged 3.84 tonnes per hectare, a record, against the UK average of 3.2.

From spring 2004 a new variety of malting barley will be available in Australia. Its name is Cowabbie. It will be adapted to the Australian market and exports.
