Brewery News

Sri Lanka & Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries has acquired 60% in United Brewery Lanka

Singapore's Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd (APB) announced on September 23 it has acquired a 60% equity stake in United Brewery Lanka Limited (UBL) as a part of its strategy for extending its presence to South Asia. APB will inject up to USD 5 million (S$8.25 million) in fresh shareholders funds to be funded from internal resources.

Partnering Sri Lankan-based Anandappa family group and associates and MBL Offshore Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Phoenix Beverages Limited which is a leading beverage group from Mauritius, the investment marks APB's maiden entry into Sri Lanka. "APB's stake in UBL is consistent with our regional expansion strategy to acquire strategic interests in domestic breweries within selected markets to create defendable and profitable businesses. South Asia is amongst the emerging markets which APB has identified for growth and our interest in UBL will give APB access to the growing Sri Lanka beer market," said Mr Koh Poh Tiong, Chief Executive Officer, APB.

Sri Lanka is one of the most liberal and foreign investor friendly economies in South Asia. With a population of approximately 19.3 million, the country's GDP is expected to grow between 5% and 6% per annum. In line with its economic growth, the ...

Australia: Takeover Panel rejects Lion Nathan application on Coopers bid

Lion Nathan Ltd attacked on September 22 the board of takeover target Coopers Brewery over what Lion Nathan described as Coopers "unusual" approach to the sales process for Coopers shares, according to Asia Pulse’s statement.

Australia's Takeover Panel said it has rejected an application for it to act on alleged misleading statements made by Coopers Brewing Ltd directors relating to a A$352 mln bid for the brewer by Lion Nathan Ltd., according to AFX publications from September 23. The panel said it dismissed Lion Nathan's application because it believes Coopers' 117 shareholders are unlikely to have been misled by their board.

Beer maker Lion Nathan, 46 % owned by Japan's Kirin Brewery Co, has made a $A352 million ($US267.91 million) takeover bid for Coopers, offering $A260 ($US197.89) per Coopers share, which Cooper's has rejected as opportunistic.

In the past few weeks, the two companies have been arguing over a pre-emptive rights regime which determines the process of how the shares are sold, the order in which shares up for sale are made available to buyers, and sets a "fair value" for shares if there is disagreement between a seller and purchaser on price.

Under the Coopers constitution, shares up for sale must ...

Kazakhstan: BBH is investing EUR 35 mln at Ak Nar brewery and eyes neighbouring markets

Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH) the joint venture owned 50-50 by Scottish & Newcastle PLC and Carlsberg AS, is investing EUR 35 million at its brewery in Kazakhstan, BBH president Christian Ramm-Schmidt told AFX News on September 21. The purpose is to double production at its Ak Nar brewery based in Kazakhstan's financial capital Almaty. BBH owns 90% of Ak Nar, where it produces beer under the popular Derbes, Irbis and Alma Ata brands.

BBH's investment aimed to boost Ak Nar's capacity to 2.3 – 2.5 million hectolitres a year from the current 1.4 million hectolitres, according to Reuters statement. The increase of capacity will be used partly to produce Baltika brand beer, currently imported from Russia, and partly to increase production of BBH's three local brands, Derbes, Irbis and Almaty, he said.

"We have so far invested some $60 million in Ak Nar," Paul Bergqvist, Carlsberg's executive vice president and deputy chief executive officer, told a presentation late on Tuesday. "As Kazakhstan's market is very interesting, promising and fast-growing we have decided to invest a further 35 million euros ($43 million) in the plant in Almaty," he said, adding that the investment would be made by the summer of ...

Brasil & Canada: Molson Coors brewery wants remaining in Brazilian market

Molson Coors Brewing Co. reiterated on September 20 that it is looking at a range of options, including third-party discussions, for its Brazilian operation in wake of speculation that it was close to selling the division, according to Associated Press. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the world's fifth-largest brewer repeated a position first announced in May that it wants to remain in the Brazilian market if it can do so "on a winning basis."

The filing came on the heels of unconfirmed reports and some analyst speculation that Molson Coors was negotiating a sale of the poor-performing division, Cervejarias Kaiser. Many believe the company would be better off if it sold the unit. "The expectation is that they are looking to sell it clearly," said analyst Bill Chisholm who tracks Molson Coors for Dundee Securities.

"They're not putting any more money into it, and it seems to be at very best stagnant, if not still deteriorating, so it needs someone who is more committed to it to get it turned around," he said. The SEC filing likely was submitted to help "ward off press speculation," he said.

In May, Molson Coors CEO Leo Kiely said the parent company would not put additional ...

Belgium: Duvel Moortgat’s consolidated turnover increased by 7.7% in the first half of 2005

Duvel Moortgat NV announced on September 20 that its consolidated turnover increased by 7.7% and income after tax by 8.2% for the first half of 2005 year-on-year. Turnover abroad represents already 33% of total turnover.

Turnover of the group’s main beer brands realises a significant increase compared to the first quarter of 2004. Duvel’s turnover rises globally by 4%. The 3 Maredsous abbey beers increase by 18%. Vedett almost doubles its turnover. Turnover of the Czech Bernard beers increases by 31% and that of the Ommegang products in the United States by 23%.

The growing sales abroad, representing already 33% of turnover, proves that Duvel Moortgat continues its internationalisation successfully.

Due to the disappearance of Freya’s turnover, the Belgian market only rises by 1%. The turnover abroad increases by 23% as a direct result of diverse initiatives in the priority export markets. In the Netherlands, following the price war in the supermarket chains, turnover only increases by 3%, not taking into account Freya. In France, turnover grows by 38% and, in the UK, by 31%. The United States also do well with a turnover increase of 23%. Both the American and the Belgian beers increased their volumes. The other countries, ...

Malt News

Ukraine: In the first two months of 2005-2006 Ukraine malt production increased by 27%

In the first two months of 2005-2006 market year Ukraine produced about 56,600 tonnes of malt compared to 44,600 tonnes of malt manufactured during the same period in 2004-2005, according to Ukraine statistics figures.

In August 2005 Ukraine produced about 26,900 tonnes of malt that is a decrease by 10% compared to July 2005. However compared to August 2004 these volumes increased by 18% (with 4,000 tonnes).

The leading Ukrainian malt manufactures are: Kharkov based company Malteurop with a malt output of 8,500 tonnes in August 2005; OAO Slavutsky Malting plant, which produced about 6,000 metric tonnes of malt in August 2005; Chernigov based unit of Malteurop Ukraine with 4,100 tonnes and ZAO Obolon Brewery with 4,200 tonnes.

Germany: Current year malt production bellow average results

Analysts say about the malt capacity production of Germany that even if one deducts 130-140,000 tons of permanent or temporary malt plant closures from total capacity, there is
still an operational industry of 2 million tonnes of malt.

January-April production was 141,200 tons per month, equal to1,7 million tonnes per year. In all past years, German production was never below 2 million tonnes but for the current cropyear analysts estimate cautiously, that no more than 1,8 million tonnes will be produced.

Barley News

EU: The majority of the winter malting barley surplus will probably be exported to China

The 2005 EU harvest of winter malting barley accounted for about 2 million tonnes, for which there was a demand of 1.65 million tonnes. The main varieties of this barley are Vanessa and Pearl (two row) and Esterel (six row), GlobalMalt commented in its September Market Report.

“The high prices of barley within the EU, a strong Euro and good harvests or good harvest prospects in Canada, Australia and South America are limiting exports of malting barley. Despite this, the majority of the winter malting barley surplus will probably be exported to China. The majority of the reduced surplus of spring malting barley will probably also be exported during the course of the year.

Overall there will not be a major surplus of malting barley in the EU. The first negative predictions about the 2006 sowing season are also appearing. In Germany, the farmers and collectors are currently expecting a reduction in the growing area between 15 and 30 % due to good sowing alternatives.”
