Denmark: Carlsberg shuts down half of its breweries in Europe
Danish brewing force, Carlsberg A/S, will shut down almost a half of its breweries in
Europe. This would be a part of a plan to streamline production on the continent,
a spokesman for the Copenhagen-based group said on September 27, according to Canadian Press. The
brewery, which produces the Carlsberg and Tuborg beer brands, wants to close 14 of 29
beer plants but has not yet decided which breweries will shut down and when, or
how many jobs will be affected.
"As a group, our breweries also must become more
efficient across the borders," group spokesman Jens Peter Skaarup said in an interview. "It will
mean that some breweries will be closed. These cutbacks are necessary in western Europe where
people are drinking more and more wine and there are fewer young people, who are
traditionally big beer drinkers."
In an interview with the Boersen financial newspaper published Tuesday, Carlsberg
chief executive Nils Smedegaard Andersen singled out the brewery in Copenhagen, saying "it likely would
not exist" in six years.
"We cannot say when it is going to happen for
the other breweries," Skaarup said. The other breweries are located in nine European countries.

Brazil: InBev aims to exceed Anheuser-Busch's 29% profit margin by 2008
The chief executive of InBev, the world's biggest brewer, John F. Brock, has been brushing
up on his Brazilian, New York Times communicated on September 26.
"Loosely translated, jinga means effortless
flair," he said last week in an interview to the newspaper in his office in
Leuven, near Brussels. Holding up a bottle of Brahma, a beer brand that Interbrew acquired
a year ago when it bought AmBev, Brazil's biggest brewer, he said he intended to
sell Brahma around the world on the strength of its jinga.
John F. Brock, InBev's chief
executive, hopes to exceed Anheuser-Busch's 29 percent profit margin by 2008. But AmBev's influence in
last year's deal that created InBev is less about the effortless flair of Brazilian dance,
style and soccer and more about the unglamorous task of cutting costs.
The old Interbrew
prided itself on its marketing savvy and its focus on local markets. It called itself
the world's local brewer. AmBev, on the other hand, which still functions under its old
name and has its shares listed on the Brazilian stock exchange, is known in the
beer industry for being obsessive about efficiency.

Japan: Premium beers on rise in Japan
The beer shipments by five major brewers for August, posted the first rise in eight
months, increasing 2.1 % from a year earlier. The premium beer sales were particularly strong,
and brewers such as Suntory, Sapporo Breweries Ltd., Kirin Brewery Co. and Asahi Breweries Ltd.
increased production to meet rising demand, Asahi IHT announced on September 23.
Sales of Suntory's
Premium Malt's jumped 140 % year on year. In August, sales of Sapporo's Yebisu beer
rose 10 % year on year, and those of Kirin's Brau Meister increased six fold.
Sales of Asahi's Jukusen tripled in the January-August period from year-earlier levels.

senior planner at Dentsu Inc.'s Center for Consumer Studies said :"By drinking premium beer about
once a week, consumers, who maintained a thrifty lifestyle during the recession, perhaps want to
feel that they have some leeway for spending in their lives".

Russia: Baltika’s minority shareholders revolted about second postponement of court case
The minority shareholders of Scottish & Newcastle's half-owned Russian brewery, Baltika, hit out on September
23 at the second postponement of a claim brought in a St Petersburg court about
allegations of irregular voting on a brewery restructuring plan, Business Scotsman communicated on September 24.
A statement issued by shareholders, following the second postponement of the case in two months
on Thursday, said: "We note with considerable concern that the Court Hearing of the claim
by minority shareholders of Baltika, which was due to be held on 22 September in
St Petersburg, has for the second time been postponed at the request of the defendants.
"Yet again, the defendants have sought to delay this process, which we construe as a
deliberate attempt by BBH ,the majority shareholder of Baltika, and its owners, S&N and Carlsberg,
to frustrate the legitimate interests of the minority shareholders in seeking adequate protection of their
rights under Russian law." It is understood the case has now been adjourned until 29
September after the Baltika registrar, ZAO Ediny, failed to turn up for the hearing this
week. Lawyers for the other defendant, Hartwall Capital, were present, sources stated.

Australia: ABB Grain announces malting barley sliding scale for 2005/2006 season
Major Australian agribusiness ABB Grain Ltd announced on September 26 its sliding scale adjustments for
the 2005/2006 season malting barley pool, enabling growers who deliver Malting 3 quality barley in
South Australia to benefit from better returns.
ABB’s general manager marketing, Nigel Officer, said that malting
barley deliveries into an SA pool option for the coming harvest, that had less than
70% retention and protein levels between 9% and 12.8%, would be graded as Malt 3,
and have the sliding scale applied to it.
The sliding scale reflects market value for the
malting barley based on protein level and the retention percentage of grower deliveries.
“The scale basically
benefits growers who deliver Schooner or Sloop varieties of barley, but just miss out on
their grain being graded Malt 1,” Mr Officer said.“The sliding scale will apply to SA
pool deliveries only.”
Mr Officer said that the sliding scale would only apply to Schooner and
Sloop varieties. Other varieties, such as Gairdner and Baudin, were predominantly for domestic use and,
as there was little demand for Malting 3 grain in these varieties, ABB would have
no Malt 3 segregations for these varieties.
