0 Australia: Coopers Brewery has lifted full year earnings by more than half

Australian beer maker, Coopers Brewery Ltd, which is the subject of a hostile takeover bid from bigger rival Lion Nathan, has recently announced it has lifted full year earnings by more than half as it continues to build on its strong position in the premium beer market, Asia Pulse News stated on September 30. Coopers Brewery Ltd said its net profit for the year ended June 30, 2005, rose 51.3 % to A$14.3 million (US$10.64 million).

The family-owned South Australian brewer's result was built on record revenue of $127.2 million, up 18.2 per cent over the year. Coopers managing director Tim Cooper said the company expects revenue and earnings to continue to grow this financial year. In 2004/05, total beer volumes increased 17.8 per cent as annualised production volume approached 50 million litres per annum. "This result is clear justification for our decision in 2002 to establish our own interstate sales and distribution business," Dr Cooper said.

Interstate beer sales have increased by 72 per cent over the past two financial years since the distribution unit Premium Beverages began operations in March 2003. Coopers chairman Glenn Cooper said volumes outside Coopers' traditional markets of SA and the Northern Territory increased by ...

0 Thailand: Thai Asia Pacific Brewery launches its new beer brand called Cheers

Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Co (TAPB), the Thailand brewer of the Heineken brand, launched on September 28 a new brand called Cheers, challenging Leo and Chang in the economy segment of the beer market. Cheers complements a beer portfolio that now consists of Heineken as its premium brand and Tiger for the middle market, according to Bangkok Post. The company is aiming to capture a 15% share of the total beer market, worth about 82 billion baht in 2004, over the next three years. (1 US$ = 41.08 TBH as of 30.09.2005)

Panya Pongtanya, the company's general manager, said the brewery had set a three-year plan which targeted for Cheers to gain a 5% share of the total beer market, with Heinken capturing 8% and Tiger 2-3%.

Currently, Chang is the market leader with a 56% share followed by Leo with 20%, Singha with 9-10% and Heineken with 7-8%. The budget-priced beer segment accounts for 79% of the total market. The beer market has hit a rough patch in terms of growth due to the slowing economy and an anti-alcohol campaign launched by the government.

It is expected to expand only about 1% this year after flat growth in the previous two years.

Malt News

0 USA: International Malting Co. started malt manufacture in north Great Falls

International Malting Co. (IMC) has begun manufacturing malt at its new plant north of Great Falls this week, Great Falls Tribune communicated on September 28. "We hope to be at 100 % capacity by mid-November," said Mark Black, a manager for International Malting, which is based in Milwaukee, Wis.

Workers this week moved some 475 tons of barley into the US$70 million plant. In about a week the barley will be converted into malt.

The company expects the plant will employ 35 people and use about 12 million bushels (261.3 thousand metric tonnes) of barley annually. International Malting has contracts with about 130 grain growers. The company built the plant to help satisfy demand for malt in the western United States and overseas. Customers include brewers, distillers and food producers.

Plans to build the plant in the Great Falls area were announced in 2003 by then-Gov. Judy Martz. Now the Great Falls Development Authority and city officials are looking at possible uses for other sites near the malting plant, an area they describe as a "commodity park." A study has been commissioned.

Part of the commodity park's appeal may lie in a US$4 million rail spur connecting the International Malting plant to the Burlington ...

0 USA: The malting barley crop is down this year and leads to low feed barley prices

The supply of good malting barley is definitely diminished this year, but carryover stocks will fill in the slack, at least for a few months, and the bushels that won't make malting grade this year because of the high VOM levels will shift that production to the feed barley market and serve to hold those prices down, Farm & Ranch Guide posted on September 28.

The malting barley crop is down in north-western Minnesota this year, according to Kelly Kotowicz at the Alvarado Farmers Elevator in Alvarado, Minn. "We lost probably a third of our crop to high VOM levels, which was rejected for feed barley, and our yields were cut down to about 50 to 60 bushels per acre," he said. "Our VOM levels in this area are running from two to four percent. Normally we discount up to two percent VOM on our contract, but this year we went to thee VOM."

According to Kotowicz, a slightly higher VOM barley can be taken into the malt house, but it takes one or two additional steeping processes to lower the VOM content enough for malting. Since this requires extra steps, the higher VOM barley is bought at a discount.

Hops News

0 USA: Hops shipping to Coors and Anheuser-Busch factories was started

Willamette Valley farms have begun shipping hops throughout the country to the nation's largest beer producers, The Associated Press has recently posted. According to the Oregon Hop Growers Association, Oregon is the second-largest hop producer in the United States after Washington.

At Goschie Farms in Silverton, workers are busy harvesting 250 acres of hop plants. The farm produces 400,000 pounds of hops each season.

The hops are shipped to Coors and Anheuser-Busch factories after being dried, cooled and packed into 200-pound sacks.
