Brewery News
World: InBev to seek acquisitions in Latin America and Asia
Belgian InBev NV, the world’s leading beer maker, is to look for more acquisitions in
Europe, Asia and Latin America to increase sales faster than rivals such as Anheuser-Busch Cos.,
Chief Executive Officer John Brock said, according to a publication of Bloomberg from September 28.
Brock is interested in buying smaller companies in China, Russia, Germany and Latin America, he
told reporters today at InBev's headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. InBev may look for purchases in
Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico and Spain, as well in Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand.
InBev
has emerged as the world's biggest beermaker by volume from 17th-largest in 1990 through transactions
including the $11.2 billion-purchase of AmBev, South America's biggest brewer, a year ago. The Belgian
company, which changed its name from Interbrew last year, also is introducing Brahma, Stella Artois
and Beck's, its three main brands, into new markets to stimulate growth.
“The old Interbrew
was an acquisition machine, but now we're seeing targeted mergers and acquisitions as a critical
component but not the only one,'' Brock said. Asked if he would consider making another
large transaction, the CEO said “never say never.''

Thailand: Thai Asia Pacific Brewery launches its new beer brand called Cheers
Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Co (TAPB), the Thailand brewer of the Heineken brand, launched on
September 28 a new brand called Cheers, challenging Leo and Chang in the economy segment
of the beer market. Cheers complements a beer portfolio that now consists of Heineken as
its premium brand and Tiger for the middle market, according to Bangkok Post. The company
is aiming to capture a 15% share of the total beer market, worth about 82
billion baht in 2004, over the next three years. (1 US$ = 41.08 TBH as
of 30.09.2005)
Panya Pongtanya, the company's general manager, said the brewery had set a three-year plan
which targeted for Cheers to gain a 5% share of the total beer market, with
Heinken capturing 8% and Tiger 2-3%.
Currently, Chang is the market leader with a 56% share
followed by Leo with 20%, Singha with 9-10% and Heineken with 7-8%. The budget-priced beer
segment accounts for 79% of the total market. The beer market has hit a rough patch
in terms of growth due to the slowing economy and an anti-alcohol campaign launched by
the government.
It is expected to expand only about 1% this year after flat growth in
the previous two years.

Ukraine: Malteurop Ukraine commissioned a EUR 24 mln facility at its plant in Kharkov
On September 27 Malteurop Ukraine commissioned new facility at its malt plant in Kharkov, wherein
it was said to have invested EUR 24 million euros, AgriMarket.Info cited a report of
Kharkov Regional State Administration's press-service.
The happening was highly prized by Ukraine's president-related Deputy Head
of Kharkov State Administration Yaroslav Yushchenko, who was cited to say as follows: "Opening of
the malt plant is a decent retort to the sceptics, who argue whether or not
it is safe to invest capital in Ukraine, and in particular - in Kharkov region.
This project costs 24 million euros."
He also said that in the nearest time Malteurop
was going to install at the plant new drying equipment, worth some 6 to 7
million euros, and in the further run it might build a special-purpose elevator for storage
of brewing malt.
Yushchenko said that a legislative professional panel was currently at work to
table into parliament amendments to the current law, aimed at maximal encouragement of investors in
good standing with Ukraine's economy - those who honestly fulfil their obligations, create new jobs
and increase budget deductions. One of such, according to Yushchenko, was Malteurop company.
"I am
sure that the opening of

USA: The malting barley crop is down this year and leads to low feed barley prices
The supply of good malting barley is definitely diminished this year, but carryover stocks will
fill in the slack, at least for a few months, and the bushels that won't
make malting grade this year because of the high VOM levels will shift that production
to the feed barley market and serve to hold those prices down, Farm & Ranch
Guide posted on September 28.
The malting barley crop is down in north-western Minnesota this year,
according to Kelly Kotowicz at the Alvarado Farmers Elevator in Alvarado, Minn. "We lost probably
a third of our crop to high VOM levels, which was rejected for feed barley,
and our yields were cut down to about 50 to 60 bushels per acre," he
said. "Our VOM levels in this area are running from two to four percent. Normally
we discount up to two percent VOM on our contract, but this year we went
to thee VOM."
According to Kotowicz, a slightly higher VOM barley can be taken into the
malt house, but it takes one or two additional steeping processes to lower the VOM
content enough for malting. Since this requires extra steps, the higher VOM barley is bought
at a discount.
