South Africa: SABMiller’s South Africa beer business reports sustained growth
The South African beverage business, the subsidiary of SABMiller, has announced on November 10, EBITA growth of 19% in US Dollars to $375-million for the six month period to end September 2005.
Commenting on sustained volume growth of almost 3% in domestic beer sales, South African Breweries Ltd Managing Director Tony van Kralingen said that the South African economy had been performing particularly well, with low interest rates, low inflation and sustained consumer confidence.
“Beer and soft drink volumes continued to record positive growth during the period, driven by a strong economy, a warmer winter and targeted marketing and sales activity.
Turnover grew 11% from $1,684-million to $1,864-million, with the operating margin increasing from 18.7% to 20.1%, reflecting increased revenue, the strength of the Rand, lower brewing commodity prices and further cost efficiencies.
SAB Ltd’s share of the total liquor market has been maintained at just under 60%, while the company increased its delivered customer base by 10% over the past six months, in line with its market penetration strategy and increased licensing in two jurisdictions.
“SAB’s premium portfolio has shown strong growth. Miller Genuine Draft, Castle Lite and Amstel Lager achieved double digit growth and market share gains are at a five-year

USA: Tsingtao and Monarch Import Co. extend Tsingtao Beer's import agreement in USA
China’s Tsingtao Brewery and Barton Beers' Monarch Import Company in Chicago announced on November 14 that they are celebrating the extension of the Tsingtao Beer U.S. import agreement, according to PRNewswire.
Under the renewal, Monarch Import Company will remain the exclusive importer of Tsingtao Beer for the U.S. market, Bermuda and the U.S. Virgin Islands through calendar year 2011. Monarch, a subsidiary of Barton Beers, Ltd., has imported Tsingtao since 1978 and has enhanced the brand's position as the best-selling imported beer from China and one of the top imported beers in the U.S. market. The Tsingtao Brewery is the largest brewery in China.
"We are excited about the brewery's renewed commitment and look forward to expanding Tsingtao's position and market share in the U.S. for many years to come," said Jim Ryan, Chief Executive Officer of Monarch Import Company. "We are extremely proud of our long-standing relationship with the Brewery and Tsingtao's position as the number-one imported Chinese beer in the U.S. and want to acknowledge our wholesalers, retailers and consumers for their support."
