Brewery News
Australia: Shareholders of Coopers Brewery Lion remove Nathan Ltd.

Shareholders of Australia's Coopers Brewery have voted to remove Lion Nathan Ltd.'s pre-emptive rights over its shares, derailing a A$420 million ($315 million) hostile bid from Lion Nathan for the unlisted brewer, Reuters communicated on December 14.

Lion Nathan's pre-emptive rights had entitled it to be offered shares that come up for sale in the brewer, after they are first offered to existing shareholders and pension fund interests.Coopers said the proposal to remove Lion Nathan's rights was supported by 93.42 % of the shares voted at a special meeting on Wednesday in Adelaide.

The rights had also exempted Lion Nathan from a rule in the Coopers constitution that prevents the sale of shares to a competitor. Removal of the rights effectively halts its A$310 per share bid, raised last month from A$260 per share.

But Lion Nathan said a range of legal action underway could leave the door open for it to pursue a takeover of the maker of Coopers Sparkling Ale and Coopers Original Pale Ale.

"I think there is a bit of water to go under the bridge before this is over," CommSec senior analyst Grant Saligari said.

"You are talking about an asset that is important to Lion, and the ...

South Korea: Carlsberg may sell its remaining shares in Hite Brewery

Danish beer giant, Carlsberg A/S, may sell its remaining shares in South Korea's largest beer maker, Hite Brewery Co., valued at $360 million, and asked the Korean firm to buy them back, a Hite executive told Reuters on Sunday, December 11.

The possible sale comes after the world's sixth-biggest brewer sold around half of its stake in Hite, South Korea's top beer maker, on December 2 in a deal generating net proceeds of about 1.9 billion Danish crowns.

After that sale, Carlsberg's ownership was cut to 13.1 percent, which had a market value of 372.2 billion won based on Friday's closing price.

"With the share price of our company soaring, Carlsberg appears to want to sell them, given its difficult financial situation," the official said by telephone, declining to be named. "We have not decided whether to buy them back or not."

Shares in Hite have climbed 73 percent so far this year, fueled after a consortium led by the company bought top local liquor maker Jinro Ltd. in June. The recent share sale was priced at 142,000 won each, a 4.1 percent discount to Hite's closing price a day earlier, sources close to the matter had said.

At the time, Carlsberg said it would ...

UK: Scottish & Newcastle unit was affected by oil-depot explosions

Scottish and Newcastle plc announced on December 12 that Sunday's massive oil depot fire at Hemel Hempstead has affected the main distribution centre for its subsidiary, Waverley TBS (WTBS) - the UK wines and spirits wholesaler.

Scottish and Newcastle said: “At the present time we have been unable to access the site but we are relieved that none of our people has been injured.

We believe that WTBS will have incurred significant asset losses but we believe that all asset and subsequent trading losses will be fully recovered from our insurers.

Our principal concern is to support our customers at this critical time. Enormous efforts have been made to minimise the inevitable disruption and we are extremely grateful to all our staff and suppliers for their support thus far.”

Brazilian: Molson Coors to be in talks for Brazilian Cervejarias Kaiser

Chief Executive Officer of Molson Coors Brewing, Leo Kiely announced on December 14 that the world's fifth-largest beer maker continues to have "discussions" with possible buyers for its money-losing Brazilian unit, Cervejarias Kaiser, according to media reports.

"We've been in discussions now with a few key players, talking about our strategic options," Kiely, 58, said today in an interview in Calgary, Alberta, where he's meeting with customers.

The company has said it may sell all or part of Kaiser after the unit lost sales to Cia. de Bebidas das Americas, the Brazilian unit of No. 2 brewer InBev NV. Heineken NV may bid for an additional stake in the brewer, Brazil's Valor Economico newspaper reported Nov. 4. Heineken controls 20 % of Kaiser and Molson Coors the rest.

"We'd like to stay in Brazil, if we can find a winning way to do it," Kiely said. Heineken is competing against Fomento Economico Mexicano SA of Mexico for Kaiser, the newspaper said. Cervejarias Kaiser posted a loss before income taxes of $24 million, Denver- and Montreal-based Molson Coors said last month.

Kiely didn't identify the companies with which Molson Coors has had talks. "We continue to believe Femsa and Heineken will be the ...

Japan: Japanese Liberal Democratic Party's tax panel decides to increase the tax on beerlike drinks

On December 13, the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party's tax panel decided to raise the tax on beerlike drinks not classified as beer or low-malt "happoshu", according to the Japanese Times.

The yet-to-be-classified drinks, called "third-category beers," would see their taxes go up 3.8 yen per can, when the panel's decision, to be included in the ruling coalition's tax reform outline Thursday, is reflected in the liquor tax system in May, the panel members said. The tax on a 350-ml can of Sapporo's Draft One, for instance, will rise from a little more than 24 yen to about 28 yen.

That's on par with the tax on "chuhai," a separate alcoholic drink made of carbonated fruit juice mixed with "shochu," a distilled liquor. The plan is to flatten taxes on alcoholic drinks containing less than 10 percent alcohol to 80 yen per liter, or roughly 28 yen per can.

The levy is still low compared with a roughly 47 yen-per-can tax on happoshu and the 77.7 yen-per-can levy on beer, Finance Ministry officials said. LDP members also decided to cut the tax on beer by 0.7 yen per can to 77 yen and discussed reducing taxes on sake by about 20 yen and raising ...

UK & Japan: Greencore Malt wins HGCA Award for Japanese export project

Greencore Malt, the largest maltster in the UK, based in Bury St Edmunds, has won an HGCA Enterprise Award of ?20,000 for the development of a project to export malt to Japan, Business Weekly communicated on December 12.

Greencore Malt is set to increase grain usage by 4,500 tonnes over the next two years with this project.

Organised twice a year by the Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA), the awards offer support towards the development of innovative food and industrial products using UK grain. The HGCA Enterprise Award will help to support Greencore Malt to become more involved in the ‘Colla-borative Contract Farming System’ (CCFS), an initiative set up by Japanese brewer Sapporo to ensure product traceability in its beer.

This follows research among Japanese consumers that identified the need for traceability in the supply chain, following a number of food health scares in Japan. Greencore and Sapporo are working with UK grain cooperative Camgrain as part of this initiative.

Adrian Dyter, export manager for Greencore Malt said: "Thanks to the support from the HGCA, we can continue to develop our position going forward. "The funding from the Enterprise Awards will also help us to significantly increase exports to Japan, which is currently ...

UK: Malt production for 2005/06 is estimated at 1.4 million tonnes

HGCA of the U.K. estimates the malt production of 2005/06 at 1.4 million tonnes, only 3 % less than last year. In July/September, however, U.K. maltsters produced 330,000 tonnes or 9 % less than a year ago.

Domestic usage is around 1.2 million tonnes for brewing, distilling and food. British industries had closed 160.000 tons of malt capacities, rumours are that more will follow. In any case British maltsters depend much less on exports than their large competitors on the Continent.

Barley News
Canada & China: CWB said sales of malting barley to China to decline

The Canadian Wheat Board said on December 13 sales of malting barley to China, one of Canada's top grain export markets, will likely slump in this marketing year as it can't meet China's quality requirements.

CWB President and Chief Executive Officer Adrian Measner said in an interview with Reuters that exports of Canadian malting barley to China, the world's largest importer of barley for the brewing of beer, would likely drop by about 25 percent in 2005/06 from 700,000 tons last year due to quality problems.

The CWB holds a monopoly on sales of wheat, durum and barley to millers, maltsters and export markets from the Canadian Prairies.

Measner was in Tokyo for an annual visit to CWB customers.

Measner said he was braced for tougher competition in the Chinese market with Australia, which is the world's largest barley exporter and aimed to step up selling to China. Despite expected drops in sales to China, CWB was keeping its overall export projections for wheat and barley in 2005/06 unchanged from its October forecasts, Measner said.

CWB said in October it planned to export 11.5 million tons of wheat, 3.5 million tons of durum and 2 million tons of barley in 2005/06.

Russia: Malting barley imports are forecast to decrease

Russia's barley harvest this year was of 16.0 to 16.5 million tonnes, according to statistics authorities. Exports of feed barley amounted to 834,000 tons from July 1 till November 10. Supplies close to Black Sea harbours are almost exhausted, total exports are expected not higher than 1.0 to 1.1 million tonnes.

The crop of two-row spring malting barley was of exceptional quality, forecasts of Russian malting barley imports have been reduced time and again, some guesses go below 100,000 tons. Question is whether the Russian storage system can maintain an unprecedented large quantity of 1.7 million tonnes of malting barley in sufficiently good condition through next spring and summer.

Hops News
Czech Republic: Hop-processing capacities in the Czech Republic

CHMELARSTVI, cooperative Zatec, which owns all the hop-processing capacities in the Czech Republic, processed 5,306 tonnes of hops in 2004, Hop Growers Union of the Czech Republic communicated in a press release on December 14. 38,4 % were pellets type 45, 56,8 % pellets type 90 and 4,8 % cone hops.

In 2005 the processing started already at the end of August and the 3-shift work began on 5th September which is approx. a month earlier than during previous years. By the end of November already 2596 t of hops were processed which is about 226 t more than in the same period last year.

CHMELARSTVI is owned jointly by Czech hop growers and has representation in all three Czech hop growing regions. The plants for hop pellets are however only in the centre of Czech hop growing, in Zatec. There is one plant for pellets type 90 and one plant able to process hops to pellets type 90 as well as type 45. This plant belongs to one the most modern hop processing units in the world. Next to these plants there are also traditional packaging plants for cone hops.

The hop processing plants in Zatec are certified according to ISO 9001:2000 ...
