A new joint venture appertaining to Interbrew and the Thai Boonrawd Brewery will be created In Thailand. The negotiations on its implementation are already begun and it is projected that the venture will have been registered by the end of spring 2002. Interbrew is particularly optimistic in respect of the prospects of this venture , due to the fact, that the beer market from Thailand since 1995 is in continuous growth and the Boonrawd Brewery is the leader of this market.
In a new merger Scottish & Newcastle Breweries acquired Hartwall of Finland against a 24,40 per cent shareholding of the total new Scottish & Newcastle group. Baltika and Yarpivo, 2 breweries and one malthouse in the Ukraine and four breweries in the Baltic countries. The group sold 45,7 Million Hl (provisional) of beer in 2001.
Kirin breweries from Japan bought 99% from the stock of Eishogen Corp, a company specialized in Chinese whine production and distribution. 3. Malt markets and prices
In February, international business remained extremely dull. It could not be expected any other way, as maltsters sold their malt and brewers covered their needs for 2002, while sales of crop 2002 - deliveries 2003 have hardly commenced. Small quantities traded or are being negotiated to Central America, Ethiopia and Vietnam. On the other hand good quantities changed hands in intra-maltster business, as a number of export maltsters had oversold their production capacities.
Domestic EU markets became more active. German brewers are reported to have purchased about 20-25 % of their demand for 2003. French brewers except the Heineken group bought already half of their 2003 needs. Business has also started in Belgium and the Netherlands to a small extent. U.K. and Irish brewers purchase around harvest time. Prices for delivery franco breweries during the whole year 2003 were between EUR 300,- and 310,-, but dropped lower for some contracts.
