Brewery News
Russia: Turkish brewery Efes buys Russian Krasny Vostok

Efes Breweries International NV (EBI), the Netherlands-based unit of Turkey's Efes Beverage Group, announced on January 25 it had signed an agreement to buy 92.34 % of Russian brewery Krasny Vostok in a deal putting Krasny Vostok's enterprise value at about US$ 390 million, Reuters, AFX and AP have communicated.

Efes said in a regulatory news release issued by the London Stock Exchange that the deal was subject to regulatory approval.

"If we take the brewery's capacity, this is the lowest price possible," said Yelena Borodenko, sector analyst at Alfa Bank in Moscow.

Natalia Zagvozdina, a consumer goods analyst with the Renaissance Capital investment bank, called the price of US$39 (euro31.78) per hectoliter "very cheap," compared to nearly US$50 (euro40.74) per hectoliter paid by Dutch brewer Heineken, which has snapped up several major Russian brewers.

The deal values Krasny Vostok at $39 per hectolitre of capacity -- less than a third of the price paid by Belgium's InBev for Russian premium brewer Tinkoff last summer.

London-listed Efes Breweries International, which is 70 percent owned by Turkish-based Anadolu Efes, rose 12 % on Wednesday, January 25, as investors welcomed its purchase of 92 % of Russia's Krasny Vostok. Its Istanbul-listed parent Anadolu Efes ...

Japan: Kirin tops Asahi on the Tokyo Stock Exchange

Kirin Brewery shares closed higher than those of rival Asahi Breweries for the first time in 27 months on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Wednesday, January 25, according to Asia Pulse/Nikkei.

Speculation that Kirin Brewery could take back the title of market leader for beer shipments from Asahi Breweries this year boosted the beer maker's stock price.

Kirin, Japan's second largest brewer, finished at 1,424 yen (US$12.32), down 16 yen on the previous day, compared with a 41-yen tumble to 1,421 yen for Asahi Breweries.

Since summer, Kirin stock has been on an upward trend. Thanks to strong sales of its third beer, Nodogoshi Nama, it is likely to post a record group operating profit for the fiscal year through December 2005, widening the gap in earnings with Asahi and Sapporo Holdings.

But the company "that will benefit from the economic turnaround will be Asahi, whose strength lies in selling beers at restaurants", pointed out Tokushi Yamazaki, analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research.

It remains unclear if Kirin's stock price will continue to rise largely because its price-earnings ratio is 27, which is considerably higher than Asahi's 17.

Belgium: InBev "buy," target price raised

Analysts at ING Financial Markets maintain their "buy" rating on InBev, while raising their estimates for the company. The 12-month target price has been raised from EUR 37.20 to EUR 43.00, ING Financial Markets posted on January 25.

In a research note published this morning, the analysts mention that the company has agreed to acquire Fujian Sedrin for EUR 614 million. Fujian Sedrin holds a leading market position in the Fujian and Jiangxi provinces, the analysts say. InBev expects EUR95 million in cost synergies and EUR 15 million in sales synergies from the acquisition, ING Financial Markets adds.

The EPS estimates for FY2006 and FY2007 have been raised from EUR2.08 to EUR2.18 and from EUR 2.42 to EUR 2.53, respectively.

Russia & China: Baltika is to extend its presence in China in 2006

In 2006 Russia’s largest beer maker, Baltika, plans to increase its beer sales and to extend distribution in China. The company plans to start shipments to Shanghai, Hong Kong and other provinces in Central and Southern China. At the moment negotiations are carried on with the potential distributors. Today Baltika is the only Russian beer exporter to China.

A government delegation of Shanghai on its visit in St. Petersburg has visited Baltika brewery. The leaders have highly appreciated the quality of Baltika beer.

Baltika has started to export its production to Chinese market in September 2004. According to 2005 figures, Baltika exported about 600 thousand conventional bottles of beer to China (cans of 5l, bottles of 0.33l and bottles of 0.5l). In 2006 Baltika plans to export about 1.5 mln bottles.

Per capita beer consumption in China is about 22 litres per year compared to 59 litres in Russia.

In the Chinese beer market Baltika beer is positioned on the “superpremium” segment and is distributed mainly in restaurants and pubs.

World & Tanzania: Tanzanian beer Serengeti is now available in the UK, Holland and Australia

The premium Serengeti lager, a malting beer manufactured in Tanzania by Serengeti Breweries Ltd, is now available in the UK, Holland and Australia, The EastAfrican news agency communicated on January 25.

Shantanu Chitgopkar, general manager, sales and marketing of Serengeti Breweries, told The EastAfrican that there had been growing demand from African residents in Europe and Australia.
Mr Chitgopkar said strategically, the UK and Australia were then selected by Serengeti Breweries Ltd to test the brand on the international market. "Serengeti was supplied to the UK and Australia as trial orders and Tanzanians in particular and other East African consumers residing in the UK have responded well to the product. There are strong indications of repeat orders," he said.

The beer, with a leopard trademark on the bottle, has a 4.8 % alcohol content.

Serengeti Breweries Ltd is the second largest brewery in Tanzania. In December 2003, it entered into a joint venture with Interbrew of Belgium to brew Stella Artois under licence following a $4 million investment in a brewery in Dar es Salaam. Stella Artois, a classic European lager, is a bottom fermented blond pilsner with an alcohol content of 5.2 %.

Samir Dashputre, brand manager of Serengeti Breweries said the brewery ...

Barley News
World: Barley supply and demand for 2005/06 estimated by IGC

International Grains Council (IGC) published on January 26 its estimated total barley production for 2005/2006 at 137 million tonnes, 2 million tonnes up from previous IGC’s estimation. The main increase was in Australia, where rains benefited yields.

Forecast consumption in 2005/06 is also higher than before, at 143 million tonnes, following increases in non-feed use in several countries.

World barley trade is forecast at 17.3 million tonnes, slightly less than in November. Iran may import more feed barley than previously projected, but Russia’s malting barley imports are smaller. IGC commented: “In the barley market, trading was relatively subdued, with Black Sea export quotations drifting a little lower in the face of competition from EU intervention sales and new supplies entering markets from Australia.”

Stocks at the end of 2005/06 are put at 21.9 million tonnes, 0.2 million tonnes more than previously forecast, but 5 million tonnes less than a year earlier, with big reductions in the EU and Russia.

According to IGC main barley market events since 24 November 2005 are as follows:

On December 14, 2005 Jordan bought 100,000 tonnes of feed barley (plus 100,000 tonnes on 18 January 2006). On January 13 Tunisia bought 75,000 tonnes of barley.

Australia: ABB Grain said barley pools closed – new pools opened

ABB Grain Ltd announced on January 24 it has closed its barley pools nationally but has immediately opened new pools.

ABB’s general manager marketing, Nigel Officer, said the decision to close the existing pools – the No.1 malting and No.1 feed barley pools in South Australia and the No.2 malting and No.2 feed barley pools in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland – was due to several factors.

“The primary reason is to protect the interests of growers who have already delivered to the pools,” Mr Officer said. “There is a possibility, given the large size of the Australian barley crop, that we will still be marketing some of this when the next northern hemisphere crop becomes available – therefore we will be in competition with that crop.

“Also, the recent appreciation of the Australian dollar has led us to make this decision to close the pools in the best commercial interests of growers who have already delivered to us. Growers are aware that ABB can do this at any time.”

ABB will open a No.2 pool in South Australia for malting barley with a gross indicator price of A$170/tonne and a No.2 pool for feed barley with a gross indicator price of A$150/t.

Canada: Recommended Malting Barley varieties 2006-07

Overall trends in barley acreage show more two-row malting acreage and declining six-row area, CWB commented in its publication for barley growers “Go Malting!” for January 2006. Much of the growth in two-row production has been fuelled by the strong agronomic package offered by new varieties and good market demand.

Market development activities have also succeeded in convincing some customers to commit to many of these newer varieties.

Recommended Two-row malting barley varieties by CMBTC (Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre):

AC Metcalfe
CDC Kendall
CDC Copeland
Harrington
Stein
Merit

AC Metcalfe continues to rank as the number one two-row malting barley variety accounting for over half the prairie acreage at 55 % in 2005.

In the higher moisture regions of the Prairies, Metcalfe offers roughly a ten per cent yield advantage over Harrington. This is mainly due to reduced lodging and improved resistance to leaf diseases.

From a selection standpoint, the 2006-07 Recommended Malting Barley Varieties list from the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) confirms established demand in both export and domestic markets and the variety comprised 54 per cent of 2005 selections.

CDC Kendall, the second most popular variety, continues to show steady increases in acreage at 15 per cent this year with the majority of ...
