Brewery News

0 Czech Republic: Plzensky Prazdroj announces its sales volumes for the year 2005

Plzensky Prazdroj, a.s., the major Czech brewer, achieved total beer sales of its brands at home and abroad of 10.2 million hectolitres in calendar year 2005, a year-on-year increase of 5 per cent, SABMiller announced on January 30.

The Company’s domestic beer sales were stable over the last two years, at the level of approx. 8 mil. hectolitres, in line with expectations and with the overall stability of the market.

Plzensky Prazdroj confirmed its leading position as the largest Czech beer exporter and producer abroad. Overall foreign sales of Plzensk? Prazdroj’s brands increased 29% to 2.2 mil. hectolitres, driven mainly by Pilsner Urquell and Velkopopovicky Kozel success in licensed markets.

Mike Short, Managing Director of Plzeňsk? Prazdroj, a.s., said: “2005 was a year of overall market stability, however negatively affected by poor weather during the summer season contributing to the strong competitive challenges of the Czech market.

Plzensky Prazdroj remained stable with regards to the domestic sales volume during 2005. The picture was enhanced, however, by a surge in international sales of our brands. This export growth was mainly in the countries that recently acceded to the EU, benefiting from the lifting of trade barriers that had existed previously ...

0 UK: Caledonian Brewery has acquired the Harviestoun Brewery in Alva, Scotland

The Caldeonian Brewing Company (CBC) announced on January 30 it has acquired the Harviestoun Brewery in Alva, near Stirling, in Scotland.

Stephen Crawley, Managing Director of the award winning Caledonian Brewing Company, said, “The Harviestoun portfolio fits perfectly into our range. It includes the famous Bitter & Twisted, CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain in 2003. The success and growth achieved by founder Ken Brooker mirrors that of Caledonian. Caledonian’s own beers have grown rapidly. In particular Deuchars IPA, which was also a Champion Beer of Britain in 2002, has become a desired, special product in many parts of the UK.

“We will continue to brew Harviestoun’s beers with the pride that they have always demonstrated. Over the last two years, Caledonian has developed an excellent national sales and distribution network. We will make sure that lovers of quality beer will benefit from the increased availability of these superb Harviestoun products.

“We will keep the excellent Alva Brewery in full production and are delighted to retain the skilled workforce. Indeed, in due course we plan to expand at Alva.”

Ken Brooker, who produced Harviestoun’s first brew back in 1985, said, “I am delighted that Caledonian will be taking over the brewery. They ...

Hops News

0 USA: Hop growers marked 50-year partnership

Northwest hop growers celebrated 50 years of collaboration beginning on January 25 with the theme "Golden Hop Celebration" and a look forward, discussing technology that will make the industry more efficient in the face of rising costs, Yakima Herald-Republic communicated on January 25.

About 150 growers attended the three-day golden anniversary affair at the Yakima Convention Center, said Steve George, administrator of the Hop Growers of Washington.

This year's convention is larger, he said, because hop growers from Washington, Oregon and Idaho met jointly, something they do every few years. Yakima is a logical meeting site because the Yakima Valley produces 75 % of the nation's hops, and is second only to Germany in worldwide production. Yakima is also the headquarters for the Hop Growers of Washington, the Hop Growers of America and the Washington Hop Commission.

On January 25 general session got under way at 9 a.m. in the south ballroom with a review of new technology, including a mechanical harvester called the "Perrault Harvester," an automated twining system, a growing system that utilizes lower trellises, and a hop vine-composting project. Thursday's meeting featured a report by the Washington State Department of Agriculture on a surface water monitoring project.
