Brewery News
Belgium: InBev called its financial results as a step towards its long-term targets

InBev, the world’s leading brewer by volume, announced on February 24 its results for the full year 2005 (FY05) and the fourth quarter of 2005 (4Q05):

§ Organic volume growth on average two times global volume growth: organic beer sales volume growth of +5.7% for FY05, and +4.8% 4Q05, year-on-year (yoy);
§ Organic revenue growth above volume growth: volume increase and an organic improvement in revenue per HL (+1.7% in FY05 and +1.9% in 4Q05, yoy) related to several revenue management initiatives, led to organic revenue growth of +7.2% yoy in FY05, and +7.0% yoy in 4Q05;
§ Margin expansion: top-line growth and focus on reducing non-working expenses resulted in normalized EBITDA margin expanding to 28.6% in FY05 versus 26.1% in FY04, and 31.2% in 4Q05 from 29.0% in 4Q04;
§ Normalized profit attributable to InBev equity holders of 1 024 million euro
§ Progress in creating value to shareholders: (1) all Zones except Western Europe realized organic EBITDA margin expansion in FY05, and there are several projects currently underway which are expected to continue to yield positive results, and further enhance our efficiency; (2) pro-active capital structure management; (3) focused deployment of invested capital, via buy-out of minorities in KK (China), and sale of German soft drinks and ...

World: SABMiller highlights global beer growth opportunities

In a presentation to the 2006 Consumer Analyst Group of New York (CAGNY) annual conference on February 23 in Scottsdale, Arizona SABMiller plc Chief Executive Graham Mackay set out why the group’s broad exposure to the global beer industry will underpin future growth.

He said: “The world’s population is forecast to grow to 6.8 billion people by the year 2010, and much of this growth will come from emerging markets. In most markets, we see strong trade up trends across most consumer product categories. Here in America and in other developed markets, that means growth in wine and spirits, and a move to premiumisation within the beer market. In the rest of the world however, the opportunity is far greater, as consumers trade up from lower quality, cheap beer, into modernised mainstream products and then on into what we refer to as ‘worthmore’ brands. Consumers are also moving into beer as an aspirational mainstream alternative to cheap spirits, or other types of local indigenous alcohol. This is increasing beer’s share of total alcohol across the emerging market landscape and there is a long way to go.

Per capita consumption of beer stands at roughly 84 litres in the US, but in ...

Hong Kong: Kingway plans to build beer plant for $100 mln

China's Kingway Brewery Holdings Ltd. said on February 24 it planned to build a beer plant in the western city Chengdu for up to US$100 million, according to Reuters. The new plant would be built in Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone and would be developed in two phases, the brewer said in a statement.

The first phase, which would take 18 months to complete, would involve US$50 million investment with an annual production capacity of 200,000 tonnes.

Kingway said its annual beer production capacity would rise to 1.5 million tonnes on completion of the first phase of development. It gave no other details. The brewer said it would fund the project by internal resources and bank borrowings.

Shares of Kingway have risen about 23 percent over the past three months to end at HK$3.45 on Thursday. (US$=HK$7.8)

USA: Beer will regain momentum in 2006 through innovation

Beer has traditionally been the grocery channel’s largest beverage alcohol category. While beer constituted 54 % of alcohol sales in 2005, sales stalled compared to the previous year, ACNielsen, the world’s leading authority on consumer behavior, has recently announced. In 2006, beer will undergo a major makeover as manufacturers attempt to revive waning sales by changing the way people think about beer.

An ACNielsen Homescan™ analysis of adult beverage consumers found that in 2005, beer drinkers were drinking less, demonstrated further by the fact that beer volume sales were down 0.4 percent. Another challenge to beer’s supremacy: its key demographic, 21-34 year olds, traded their beer for other types of alcohol – mostly spirits.

This year, beer is ready for a comeback. Consumers have demonstrated a desire for experimentation, and brewers are responding. Expect to see a slew of flavoring innovations designed to broaden the appeal—and usage occasions—of beer. Robust flavors like bourbon cask ale, winter ale and pumpkin spice are targeted toward core beer drinkers, while milder flavor-seekers will be pleased to see the continued launch of seasonal beers such as blueberry, strawberry passion and citrus.

“Product innovations will re-establish beer as America’s beverage,” said Nick Lake, Vice President of Business ...

New Zealand: Beer is the most popular type of alcoholic beverage in the country

Beer, wine, and spirit-based drinks available for consumption all increased in the 2005 calendar year, Statistics New Zealand announced on February 23. Beer still remained the most popular type of alcoholic beverage in New Zealand, accounting for 68.8 % of the alcohol available for consumption. While beer with a strength of 4.35 % or less was still the most common beer available, the availability of higher strength beer has been increasing. It represented almost 30 percent of the 316 million litres of beer available in 2005.

Bottled beer made up 53.6 % of domestically produced beer in 2005, exceeding the previous highest level (50.8 %) in 1982. By contrast, bulk (tap) beer now accounts for just over a quarter of the beer produced, compared with almost half of the beer produced in 1991. Total domestic production was down slightly from the 2004 level, to 91.6 percent of all beer available for consumption. In 2005, wine provided 19.5 percent of the available alcohol, with domestic production making up three-quarters of the 89 million litres of wine available in New Zealand.

Malt News
UK & Japan: Greencore Malt to export malt to Japanese brewers

Greencore Malt based in Bury St Edmunds, has won an award of GBP 20,000 for the development of a project to export malt to Japanese brewers, Business Weekly communicated on February 24.

Organised twice a year by the Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA), the awards offer support towards the development of innovative food and industrial products using UK grain. Greencore Malt is set to increase grain usage by 4,500 tonnes over the next two years with this project.

The HGCA Enterprise Award will help to support Greencore Malt to become more involved in the ‘Collaborative Contract Farming System,’ an initiative set up by Japanese brewer Sapporo to ensure product traceability in their beer.

This follows research among Japanese consumers that identified the need for traceability in the supply chain, following a number of food health scares in Japan. Greencore and Sapporo are working with UK grain co-operative Camgrain as part of this initiative.

Adrian Dyter, export manager for Greencore Malt said: “The funding from the Enterprise Awards will help us to significantly increase exports to Japan, which is currently the world’s largest importer of malt. We will achieve this by providing quality product and assured traceability to the Japanese brewing industry.”

Barley News
World: IGC announced a new barley production estimate of 138.5 mln tonnes for 2005/06

International Grains Council (IGC) posted in its last Grain Market Report on February 23 new barley production estimate of 138.5 million tonnes for 2005-2006, 1.4 million tonnes higher than last month estimate following an increased assessment of Australia’s harvest.

IGC 2005-2006 forecast world consumption is virtually unchanged at 142.6 million tonnes. Strong recent shipments prompt an increase in estimated use in Near East Asia but tight supplies and a fall in malting output result in a lower figure for the EU.

2005-2006 total trade is up 0.1 million tonnes from last month at 17.4 million tonnes, with projected imports by Near East Asia now 9.5 million tonnes, slightly more than last year. World stocks are projected higher than last month because of the big Australian crop

OUTLOOK FOR 2006/07

Barley production in the EU is expected to be up from last year because of better yields, but winterkill will affect production in Russia and Ukraine. Farmers in Canada may switch to barley from canola and good rains in North Africa are improving crop prospects there.

IGC said that world grain prices moved distinctly higher in February, with wheat markets especially strong in many countries. ...

Canada: 2005-06 Pool Return Outlook by CWB is lower for designated barley

The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) released on February 23 its Pool Return Outlook (PRO) for the 2005-06 crop year. Compared to the January PRO, the Pool A and B feed barley PROs are unchanged, while the designated barley PRO is down C$1 per tonne.

Note: PROs are the CWB's estimate of crop year returns. Farmers who use PROs to make marketing decisions are advised that unusual weather in importing or exporting countries and other changes in market conditions could dramatically affect the price forecasts. PROs are not price guarantees and should not be confused with initial payments. PROs also do not represent CWB offer values for prospective sales transactions nor sales values for actual transactions.

PRO commentary
2005-06 PRO

Feed barley
Pool A - Sales of this pool are essentially complete.

Pool B - While feed barley prices have shown some strength in recent weeks, export competition is limiting price increases. The outlook for global barley production in 2006-07 is also a negative factor influencing the longer-term price outlook.

Designated barley
The global malting barley market remains under pressure, given ample supplies of Australian malting barley. The strengthening Canadian dollar is also having a negative impact on returns.

Hops News
Russia: Efes is planning hops production in Tatarstan

Efes Beverage Group (EBG) is planning together with OAO Krasny Vostok Agro to organise production on growing, drying and processing brewing hops in Tatarstan. The announcement was made by EBG president, Ahmet Boyacioglu, on February 22.

According to him, Tatarstan has a favourable climate for growing hops and corresponding specialists are coming on the place to study the question in the near future. EBG expects to produce enough hops to sell to other Russian brewers as well.

Besides necessary investments are planed to be made by EBG in order to produce malting barley together with Krasny Vostok Agro. Efes is producing malting barley in Turkey since 1980.
