Brewery News
Vietnam: Krones AG laying the foundation stone for a new brewery in Ho Chi Minh-City

Krones AG, Neutraubling, Germany, announced on March 2 it is taking responsibility to build complete brewery for Sabeco in Saigon.

It’s the first time that Krones AG, Neutraubling, Germany, the globally operating manufacturer of bottling and packaging machinery, has also tackled construction work on such a large scale for one of its clients. Early this year, Vietnam’s leading brewery, Saigon Beer, Alcohol and Beverages (Sabeco), began construction of its biggest brewery, in the Cu Chi industrial zone of Ho Chi Minh City.

For around 120 million US dollars, it is building here a brewery dimensioned for an initial capacity of 1 million hl, which is scheduled to start operation within a mere 17 months, by mid-2007. The first filled bottle of beer will be leaving the brewery in May 2007. Krones bears overall responsibility for the entire construction work and the equipment as well. A quintessentially turnkey project.

Krones has thus taken fully on board the EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) idea, which subsumes the construction of the building, the entire engineering and the organisation of all subsuppliers. Krones is the main contractor, handling overall project management, with ultimate responsibility for both equipment and the construction work. The job package covers the buildings and ...

Italy: SABMiller launches $50 million Peroni campaign

SABMiller plc, one of the world’s leading brewers, announced on March 2 that it will invest US$50 million over the next 18 months in a new global brand campaign for its international premium beer Peroni Nastro Azzurro. The campaign will incorporate a range of advertising and marketing initiatives based around an adaptation of Fellini’s 1960 masterpiece ‘La Dolce Vita’ – a film that encapsulated the essence of Italian style and spurred a global affection for all things Italian. The programme, which will roll out in the UK in April, will be followed by launches in the US, South Africa and Romania. The campaign will include cinema advertising, print and outdoor billboards set in the home of La Dolce Vita and Birra Peroni - Rome.

The new investment follows a year of successful rebranding of Peroni Nastro Azzurro in the UK and the introduction of the brand into the US, Romania and South Africa. Positioned as an icon of Italian style, Peroni has enjoyed positive growth in its international markets supported by creative marketing initiatives including Emporio Peroni – the exclusive non-shop shop on Sloane Street, London, high class brand association with other trendsetting categories, and innovative point of sale collaterals ...

Canada: Sleeman reports fourth quarter and fiscal 2005 results

Sleeman Breweries Ltd. Released on March 2 its financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended December 31, 2005.

Fourth Quarter Financial Highlights

• Net revenue was $49.6 million compared to $53.8 million for the same period last year.

• Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) were $5.7 million compared to $9.7 million for the same quarter last year.

• Net earnings were $0.5 million or $0.03 cents per share, compared to $3.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2004.

“The fourth quarter of 2005 was a very challenging period for Sleeman due to the intense price competition the Company faced in all of its key Canadian markets, especially Quebec,” said John Sleeman, Chairman and CEO. “Our volumes and market share held up quite well in this environment. However, our revenue per hectolitre and profitability were impacted as we offered limited time offer discounts to remain competitive with those offered by the large national brewers and the smaller regional brewers who benefit from provincial tax subsidies. I am pleased to say that our cost reduction efforts continue to generate savings as we reduced our average cost of goods sold by $1 per hectoliter in the quarter.”

Portugal: Budweiser appeals sales ban in Portugal

Anheuser-Busch has appealed a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that stopped the beer maker from selling its Budweiser brand in Portugal, the court said Friday, March 3, according to The Associated Press.

The largest brewer in the United States has been battling with Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar for the exclusive rights to the Budweiser name and others — such as Budvar — for over a century. Currently, they are involved in some 40 lawsuits worldwide.

Anheuser-Busch lodged the case with the Strasbourg court after Portugal's Supreme Court ruled in 2001 that the Czech brewery had the right to use the brand name in Portugal under a 1986 treaty between the two countries, which protects registered designations of origin.

In the first trademark dispute referred to Europe's human rights court, Anheuser-Busch argued the Portuguese decision violated its rights to the "peaceful enjoyment" of the trademark. It said the ruling infringed Article 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees individuals and companies protection of property.

But the human rights court ruled against Anheuser-Busch last October, saying the brewery's rights to the enjoyment of the trademark had not been breached because the company had never had the trademark registered in ...

Philippines: San Miguel beats forecasts with profit rise

San Miguel Corp., the largest Philippine food and drinks company, reported a 3.3 % rise in 2005 net profit on Friday, March 3 beating expectations of a fall, thanks to contributions from overseas acquisitions, according to Reuters.

The Philippines' second-largest company said that after a difficult year of weak domestic beer sales, higher raw material costs and taxes, it was upbeat about prospects for 2006, largely due to its expanded foreign operations. "We will benefit from an expanded product mix and diversified business. Indeed today, San Miguel has a much more solid foundation for consistent, long-term growth," Finance Director Ferdinand Constantino said in a briefing to investors.

San Miguel generated unaudited net income of about 9.15 billion pesos ($179 million) last year against restated net profit of 8.86 billion pesos in 2004, confirming an earlier report by Reuters.

Analysts had forecast net profit of 7.67 billion pesos for 2005, according to Reuters Estimates.

Group revenues climbed 30 percent to 227 billion pesos in 2005, bolstered by San Miguel's $1.5 billion purchase last year of Australia's largest dairy firm, National Foods, its biggest deal yet.

President Ramon Ang told investors the group was still mulling an IPO of its Australian ...
