Russia & USA: Anheuser-Busch partners with Heineken to brew Bud in Russia

Anheuser-Busch International, Inc. and Heineken Russia announced on March 6 they have reached a licensing agreement that will allow Heineken to brew, sell and distribute Anheuser- Busch's flagship brand under the Bud trademark in Russia, according to PRNewswire-FirstCall. The brewing will begin in the next few months at Heineken Brewery LLC in St. Petersburg -- one of ten breweries that Heineken operates in Russia. Bud will be available in 330-ml and 500-ml bottles as well as 500-ml cans. The brand will be priced similar to other premium international lagers.

Bud is brewed using only the finest all-natural ingredients including barley malt, rice, hops, yeast and water. Bud will be available in high-end bars and restaurants in major Russian cities including Moscow and St. Petersburg. The brand also will be available in off-trade and key accounts in these markets.

"Russia is one of the top-five beer markets in the world and fits our international growth strategy for brand development," said Andrew J. Day, vice president, international operations, Anheuser-Busch International, Inc. "Heineken has excellent marketing and distribution systems in Russia and shares our commitment to building the Bud brand in this country. We have a strong partner to help us expand our ...

China: Yanjing Brewery aims to rapid domestic expansion without a foreign partner

Yanjing Brewery Co. Ltd., China's third-largest brewer, hopes to sell 9.3 % more beer in 2006 to secure its dominant market share in Beijing and other cities. The brewery aims to sustain a rapid domestic expansion without a foreign partner, its president said on Tuesday, March 7, according to Reuters news.

Li Fucheng told reporters that the Beijing-based firm aimed to produce 9.3 percent more beer, or 3.4 million tonnes, in 2006, adding that it hopes to sustain gross profit margins at above 40 percent. The brewery sold 3.11 million tonnes last year.

In 2005, Li said Yanjing's revenue jumped 11 percent to 8 billion yuan (US$995 million), while net profit was expected to have risen about 5 percent from 2004, when the corporation earned just 270.51 million yuan.

Yanjing remains the only major Chinese player in the world's fastest-growing beer market that has yet to team up with a global firm. Foreign companies have scrambled in past years to seal pricy acquisitions and build breweries across the country.

"We have no plans to team up with a foreign partner so far because we have the technical expertise and sufficient funds to expand in the market," Li said on the sidelines of ...

Japan: Kirin to go its own way in repricing beers after tax changes - report

Kirin Brewery Co will break tradition and price its beers independently of the three other major Japanese brewers once revised liquor tax rates take effect in May, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported over the weekend, according to AFX News from March 3.

With the tax on a 350ml can of beer slated to fall 0.7 yen, Asahi, Sapporo Breweries Ltd and Suntory Ltd plan to lower their shipment prices by 0.75 yen in May. But Kirin intends to reduce its shipment price by 1 yen, the report said.

For larger 633ml bottles, Kirin will cut the price just 1 yen, while the other three brewers will reduce prices 1.25 yen on a tax drop of 1.26 yen, it said.

Kirin's departure from the industry tradition of going along with others is thought to be driven by its desire to unseat Asahi as the market leader, the business daily said.

Russia: Ochakovo not for sale: seeking strategic partners

Moscow's beer and non-alcoholic beverage works, Ochakovo, is not considering a sale, but does not rule out an opportunity for strategic partnership, the company's General Director Vladimir Antonov told a press conference at the end of February.

Ochakovo has been getting regular offers from leading foreign companies, but a decision was made at the shareholders' meeting not to sell the company, Antonov said. However, the enterprise could partner or cooperate with other companies, particularly in bottling other brands' products. Negotiations to this effect with undisclosed companies are under way.

Global brewers Heineken and SABMiller have declined to comment on any interest in a tie-up with Russia’s last notable independent brewer Ochakovo.

According to experts the most probable development of Anheuser-Busch could be the purchase of Ochakovo. Sources said that Ochakovo has already received an offer from Anheuser-Busch.

USA: Beer industry is at a "critical crossroads”, according to Miller CEO

The chief executive of Miller Brewing, Norman Adami, said on Monday, March 6 that the American beer industry is at a "critical crossroads," as it faces flat growth and surging competition from other alcoholic beverages, MarketWatch communicated.

Norman Adami said the industry has been "promoting sameness and increasingly going lowbrow. It is as if we (have been) promoting beer as the official beverage of the knuckleheads." In an interview with MarketWatch at the Nightclub & Bar show, Miller's Adami said the consumer has moved "in the exact opposite direction."

After decades of innovative marketing that brought beer's share of the market to about 61% in the mid 1990s, brewers fell into a pattern of "sameness in message, sameness in look and sameness in our products," Norman Adami told attendees at the annual Nightclub & Bar Show here.

Companies like Miller, a unit of SABMiller and archrival Anheuser-Busch were once among the country's "ideal marketers, right up there with the Nikes and the Apples," he added.

But as consumers began to look for more personalization and sophistication, Adami noted, the business failed to catch on quickly enough. Brewers stuck to the formulas that had worked before: mass-advertising campaigns with lots of bikinis ...

EU: Major quantities of malt were shipped to Latin America

Malt exporters booked almost 200,000 tonnes export licences in February, major quantities were shipped to Latin America.

Total licence bookings are 77,000 tonnes behind the pace of last year. However, in 2005 spring and early summer export shipments were disappointing. If licence fixations shipments continued at the same pace in March-June as in July-February, EU exports may still come close to last year’s 2.2 million tonnes.

EU: Malting barley prices went slightly down last month

Prices of malting barley had been sliding down slowly during the past months. According to market analysts, in late February there was a change of mood, after purchases of coops and traders in France and Denmark. It seems that France has little spring barley with a maximum protein content of 11.5 % left.

England is reported to be sold out in crop 2005, Scotland has a few cargoes left for export. Any larger new demand must be covered from Scandinavia, where stocks are large, but farmers stubbornly holding on to their barley. Prices recovered by EUR 2,- per ton from the lows.
