Brewery News
USA: Majority of Top 50 Brewers are Craft Brewers

While mainstream lagers have been in decline, steady growth by craft brewers in recent years has shaped the country's top 50 brewers list into a roll call of craft beer leaders. In 2005, the craft beer segment grew by 9 % on top of 7 % growth in 2004, USA Brewers Association announced on April 3.

"Craft brewers deliver the flavors that beer drinkers increasingly desire," said Paul Gatza, Director of the Brewers Association. "As a result more than 30 of the top 50 U.S. brewers are craft brewers."

Beers brewed by top 50 producers include well-known brands from Budweiser, Miller and Coors and nationally distributed craft beers like Samuel Adams Boston Lager and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Other examples of craft brands from top 50 brewers include Anchor Steam, Deschutes Black Butte Porter, Boulevard Pale Ale and Brooklyn Lager.

"More than 1,400 breweries operate in the U.S. today, said Ray Daniels, Director of Craft Beer Marketing for the Brewers Association. "When you look at the top 4 percent of all brewers -- this top 50 list -- craft brewers constitute the majority."

Brewers Association figures show that domestic craft beer sales volume grew 9 percent in 2005, faster than any other segment ...

China: Tsingtao H2 earnings fell 5 % due to fierce competition

Tsingtao Brewery Co Ltd, the largest Chinese beer maker by revenue, announced on Monday, April 3, its second-half earnings fall 5 percent, due to fierce competition from foreign breweries, according to Reuters.

Tsingtao, which is 27 percent-owned by top U.S. beer maker Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., is relying on growth of its flagship brand to help lift prices and margins in a country where a 640-ml bottle -- just over a pint -- can cost only 12 U.S. cents.

China's beer market is the largest in the world by volume and is growing at an annual rate of 7 percent to 10 percent as incomes rise, attracting a flood of investment from global players such as SABMiller , Heineken and Carlsberg , driving up valuations despite narrow profit margins.

"We are seeing intensified competition from international breweries and industry consolidation will continue," the firm said in a statement. But the company added that it is confident of maintaining growth.

Tsingtao, which has also battled higher costs for power, transport and raw materials, had second-half net earnings of 133.4 million yuan (US$16.6 million) for the six months ended Dec. 31, according to Reuters calculations. That compares with 140.4 million yuan a year ...

Thailand: Thai Beverage Pcl can get about USD 1billion at IPO in Singapore

Thai Beverage, Thailand’s largest brewery , plans a $1 billion initial share sale in Singapore after anti-alcohol protesters blocked an offering in Thailand last year, three bankers involved in the sale said. Thai Beverage, which is set to begin marketing its IPO to international investors in May, may raise $900 million to $1 billion, the bankers said to Bloomberg on April 2, asking not to be identified because an announcement hasn't been made.

Drawing more foreign share sales is crucial to Singapore's effort to remain a major financial center in Asia as competition increases from Shanghai to Mumbai. Thai Beverage's offering may be the biggest IPO since Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. raised about S$4 billion ($2.5 billion) in 1993 in the city-state's largest initial share sale, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

"For Singapore, it bodes well in its efforts to be a hub for Southeast Asia, offering companies international investors they can tap" said Nicholas Yeo, a fund manager at Aberdeen Asset Management in Singapore, which manages $15 billion in assets.

Financial services make up more than one-tenth of Singapore's $119 billion economy, with its market of 4 million people offering limited share sales from local companies. A total ...

China: Carlsberg is involved in 20 breweries primarily in western China

Carlsberg A/S, the largest Danish beer maker, announced on April 3 it has signed a joint venture agreement with Ningxia Nongken Enterprise Group Co. Ltd ("Nongken") to establish a greenfield brewery located in the Ningxia Autonomous Region in western China. Carlsberg will own 70% of the joint venture. The new brewery will have a capacity of up to 1 mio hl. Until the new brewery is in operation by the end of 2006 the beer will be supplied from Nongken's existing brewery. It is also expected that the new brewery will maintain supplies to the neighbouring provinces north and east of Ningxia.

The beer consumption in the region is approx. 1 mio hl equal to an annual per capita consumption of around 18 litres, which is below the national average of approx. 23 litres per year. Nongken will bring into the joint venture a considerable experience in producing and distributing beer in the local market. The local Xixia beer brand will be part of the portfolio of the new joint venture.

With investment in another seven breweries – one under construction - Carlsberg has passed a milestone in its ongoing expansion in China. Now Carlsberg is involved in 20 breweries primarily in ...
