South African Breweries which holds a 98% share in the South African beer market has announced the launching of a new light beer brand, Sterling Light Lager. The introduction of this brand in the South African beer market, was stimulated by the increasing demand for light beer, in which the level of both calories and alcohol is low.
Sterling Light, which is available in four-packs, an absolute packaging novelty for SA beer market, will be initially sold in South Africa and only later this beer will be launched on external markets.
Japanese brewery Kirin is determined to conquer an important market share in the Asian beer market by beginning to sell there its brand beer at low prices. This is an important step for the fulfillment of its long term strategy regarding the growth of Kirin’s market share in the world beer market.
The leading Japanese brewer is going to start this expansion campaign with the Taiwanese market where Kirin hopes to gain a share of 5% by the end of the first year. The leader of Asia-Oceania region will sell there, Kirin beer at a price of 60-70 yen a can from May 2002.
After fortifying its positions in Taiwan Kirin plans, according to its own statement from this Saturday, to make much more stronger its standing in the beer market of China and those of Southeast Asian countries.
Co.Br.Ha brewery from Belgium has registered a drop in its net profit from EUR 3.2 mln in 2000 to EUR 1.2 mln in 2001.

Vijay Mallya, the chairman of Indian brewery UB Ltd has recently declared at a news conference, that UB Ltd will be restructured and transformed into a new company UB Beer Ltd. The company that is going to be created will acquire two breweries from Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan regions.........[www.e-malt.com]
Interbrew UK has expressed its worries in respect of the price war widely practiced in the UK beer market and said that such a situation will never allow the constructive development of UK beer industry.........[www.e-malt.com]
Zhu Jiang, the first brewery from the Chinese province Guangdong, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Belgian Interbrew. By this Memorandum of Understanding, Zhu Jiang Brewery entitles Interbrew to be the promoter of its transformation into a joint stock corporation..........[www.e-malt.com]
