Peru: SABMiller is closing the offer for the investment shares of Backus

SABMiller plc ("SABMiller") announced on April 6 that the offer for the investment shares (class I non-voting stock) of Union de Cervecerias Peruanas Backus & Johnston S.A.A. ("Backus") closed on April 5,
2006.

SABMiller acquired 493m investment shares during the offer at a cost of approximately US$364 million at current exchange rates. As a result, SABMiller owns 91% of the investment shares and its effective economic interest in Backus has increased to approximately 94%.

Backus is Peru's largest brewer and is listed on the Lima Stock Exchange.

SABMiller plc is one of the world's largest brewers with brewing interests or distribution agreements in over 60 countries across five continents. The group’s brands include premium international beers such as Miller Genuine Draft, Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Pilsner Urquell, as well as an exceptional range of market leading local brands. Outside the USA, SABMiller plc is also one of the largest bottlers of Coca-Cola products in the world.

China: China Resources Snow Breweries to build a new plant in Harbin

China Resources Snow Breweries (CR Snow) will invest 283 million yuan (US$35 million) to build a new plant in Harbin, capital of Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, China Daily communicated on April 7. The factory will be set up in phases in Harbin Limin Economic Development Area.

The first phase of construction, with a designed production capacity of 230,000 kilolitres of beer a year, was started on April 6.

The brewer expects the first-phase project, which will mainly produce its Snow-branded beer, to bring 300 million yuan (US$37.4 million) in annual revenue. "It is a key strategic move for CR Snow's expansion in Northeast China and in the whole Chinese market," said Wang Qun, general manager of the brewer.

He said that Snow beer has achieved a good performance in Heilongjiang Province, while the new plant will further improve the company's local production facilities in the province to better satisfy local demand.

The new plant, after completion, will be able to produce 430,000 kilolitres of beer a year. The Harbin plant is CR Snow's second purpose-built brewery after it invested 680 million yuan (US$84.8 million) in building a new plant in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, in 2004.

Japan: With the new “third beer”, Gubinama, Asahi aims to push back Kirin's advance

Asahi Breweries Ltd. announced another "third beer", opening the tap on product development, Asahi News informed on April 6.

Gubinama is Asahi's latest counter-offensive to keep Kirin Brewery Co. from overtaking it as the leader in annual sales of beer and beer-like beverages. While Asahi leads the overall beer market on an annual basis, in January and February the brewer fell behind Kirin, which has strong third-beer sales.

Third beers contain little or no malt. They are made from such ingredients as peas and soybeans. Gubinama will debut on May 30, just over a year after Asahi launched its first third-beer product, Shin-Nama, in April 2005.

Shin-Nama did not sell well. Asahi reformulated and re-released it as Shin-Nama 3 in November. It was an unusually short development period that the company repeated with Gubinama. Asahi reduced the bitterness in Gubinama in an effort to appeal to consumers in their late 20s and 30s. Shin-Nama has not sold well in that age group. In 2001, Asahi overtook the long-time market leader Kirin based on the success of its Super Dry beer.

Australia: Lion Nathan’s defence costs Coopers A$8 Million

Adelaide-based Coopers Brewery has incurred takeover defence and legal costs of A$8 million after facing down Lion Nathan Ltd.'s A$420 million hostile bid last year, the Australian Financial Review reported on April 6, citing Managing Director Tim Cooper.

According to Dow Jones, Cooper told the newspaper the closely held company's beer sales in the eastern states had an unexpected fillip from the publicity generated by Lion's failed tilt.

He told the AFR that in South Australia Coopers' share of the market has been static at between 22% and 24% as Lion and Foster's Group Ltd. (FGL.AU) aggressively pursued extra sales. However, Coopers had made strong gains in other markets, Copper told the newspaper.

Although takeover defence costs ballooned, the company is on track to meet its pretax profit forecast of A$26.9 million in the year ending June 30, Cooper told the AFR.

Philippines: San Miguel’s Jan-Feb international beer sales volume increased 14 % year-on-year

Beverage, food and packaging conglomerate San Miguel Corp. reported on April 6 a net income of P988 million in the January-February period, up four percent from the same months last year, according to XFN-Asia.

Net sales surged 30 percent year-on-year to P38.8 billion, the company told the stock exchange. Consolidated operating income rose 50 percent to P3.03 billion, thanks to reduced costs of raw materials and containment of fixed costs, it said. It did not say why net income grew at such a marginal rate, but analysts said San Miguel had been hurt by huge financing charges on loans for acquisitions made last year.

San Miguel's acquisition of National Foods last year was funded by a $1.15-billion bridging loan. The company earlier said it was in talks for a $500-million loan to refinance the debt.

"Interest expenses have become a burden and are narrowing the profit potential of the company," said First Grade Holdings Inc. managing director Astro del Castillo. "But the good thing is the substantial growth in its operating income, which is an indication that the company's investments have started to pay off."

Russia: Breweries' shareholders will consider a merger with Baltika in April and May

Shareholders in Russia's Pikra, Yarpivo and Vena breweries will consider a merger with the country's top beer maker Baltika in April and May, a Baltika official said on April 6. Baltika is owned by Baltic Beverage Holding (BBH), which is co-owned by Carlsberg and Scottish & Newcastle, according to Reuters .

BBH holds majority stakes in all three of the Russian breweries but wants to consolidate them to produce annualised synergies of $60-80 million within the first year, primarily by cutting the cost of distributing beer across the world's largest country.

"There will be a proposal to shareholders of Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo to discuss the Baltika merger at annual shareholders' meetings," the Baltika official told Reuters. Yarpivo's AGM will take place on April 20, Pikra's on April 27, and Vena's on May 11.

"Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo minorities have the right to sell their shares to Baltika before April 27," the official said. "The buyout process started on March 28."

The fast-growing Russian beer market is a key source of growth for both Carlsberg and Scottish & Newcastle, which are otherwise largely dependent on sluggish west European markets.

Mexico: Barley consumption is to increase due to increased beer production, AAFC said

For 2005-2006, while barley production, consisting mainly of six-row varieties, is forecast to remain unchanged at 0.9 Mt, consumption is expected to continue to increase marginally to 0.95 Mt due to increased beer production in Mexico, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) reported on March 31. As a result, Mexican malting barley imports are estimated to be unchanged at 75,000 t. Canadian exports of malting barley to Mexico are forecast to remain similar to last year at 5,000 t in 2005-2006. However, Canadian exports of malt have risen since the TRQ was eliminated in 2003 and are estimated at 50,000 t in 2005-2006.

The remainder of Mexico's imports of malt and malting barley are sourced from the US. For 2006-2007, barley production is forecast to remain similar to 2005-2006 due to unchanged seeded area and yields. Canadian malt and malting barley exports to Mexico are expected to remain similar to 2005-2006.

Mexico is the eighth largest beer producer in the world and in 2002 domestic beer production reached 6.3 billion litres. In the last 25 years, beer consumption has increased substantially. Canada: Initial payments for 2005-06 crop year increased for malting barley

The CWB announced on April 5 that 2005-06 initial payments for designated barley, wheat and durum will increase effective April 6, 2006. The increase in initial payments for designated barley will be C$10.00 per tonne

CWB said that farmers who delivered wheat, durum and designated barley to the CWB between August 1, 2005 and April 5, 2006 will receive an adjustment payment. The payments will be dated April 18, 2006 and mailed on April 21, 2006. Farmers with direct deposit will have their accounts credited for value on April 18, 2006.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada's biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less the costs of marketing, to Prairie farmers.
