Brewery News
Russia: Efes bought the rights for the distribution Bavaria brand in Russia from Heineken

Efes brewing company based in Turkey has acquired the rights for the distribution of the beer brand of Bavaria in Russia from Dutch brewery Heineken, Kommersant news agency communicated on April 18. Bavaria N.V. and Efes are expected to sign the contract soon. Having bought two Krasny Vostok breweries, Efes badly needs new brands to use its production facilities and is likely to keep on buying new rights.

Efes presented the new brand to its Russian distributors in Malta last week. Bavaria N.V. and Efes are to sign the contract in late April, according to the information Kommersant obtained. Efes, however, would not confirm the reports yesterday. The financial aspect of the deal is not disclosed either.

Heineken has held rights for the brand of Bavaria in Russia through the PIT brewery. Obviously, the Dutch concern decided not to develop the potential rival for Heineken, its major brand.

Analysts note that the production of new brands now tops the agenda at Efes. This is the only way for the company to fill up it production facilities. The Turkish concern bought two breweries of Krasny Vostok in January. The concern currently has production facilities with the annual capacity of 100 million decaliters of ...

Hong Kong: Kingway Brewery reports a 19% rise in 2005 net profit

Kingway Brewery Holdings Ltd., partly owned by Dutch brewer Heineken NV, announced on April 19 its 2005 net profit was 19 percent higher from the year before, according to Associated Press.

The brewer, based in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, said net profit rose to HK$198.3 million (US$25.57 million, euro20.67 million) from HK$166.2 million in 2004. Kingway didn't give a reason for the increase in its earnings in a brief statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

The company said its 2005 revenue rose to HK$1.2 billion (US$154.7 million, euro125.09 million) from HK$924.5 million.

The Chinese brewer is controlled by state-owned Guangdong Yue Gang Investment Holdings Ltd. But Heineken holds a 21.44 percent stake in Kingway.

Heineken acquired its stake in Kingway in 2004 for euro57 million through its joint venture with Singapore-listed Asia Pacific Breweries, Heineken Asia-Pacific Breweries China.

The Dutch brewer had sought to increase its stake in Kingway, but ended discussions with the Chinese brewer in August last year. Kingway has four production plants in Guangdong province.

Japan: Brewers raising “third-category beer” output ahead of tax hike

Major beer makers are stepping up the production of so-called "third-category beer," as they expect consumers to stock up on the beer-like sparkling drink ahead of a possible increase in retail price in line with a planned tax hike in May, Kyodo News communicated on April 15.

Behind the move is the memory of an about 30 percent surge in demand for "happoshu" low-malt beer in April 2003, ahead of a hike in the liquor tax for the product in the following month, officials of the makers said.

Kirin Brewery Co., the top producer of the third-category alcoholic beverage, is operating all its seven plants nationwide at full capacity without holidays, according to its officials. He wants to prepare to prevent shortages for consumers.

Sapporo Breweries Ltd., Asahi Breweries Ltd., and Suntory Ltd. have followed suit.
Part of their efforts to stimulate bulk buying include the introduction of larger cases, featuring 48 350-ml cans rather than the usual 24, who comes with free bonus gifts such as: snacks, cooking oil or other food items.

On May 1, the government will raise, as part of taxation reforms, the liquor tax for the third-category beverage by 3.8 yen per 350 milliliters, ...

Philippines: San Miguel Corp. recorded a 1.9 % rise in 2005 net income

The largest Southeast Asia's food and drinks group, San Miguel Corp., recorded a 1.9 percent rise in 2005 net income, slightly lower than the earlier reported 3 percent growth, Reuters posted on April 17. A copy of its financial report is submitted to regulators showed on 17 April 2006.

The second-largest company from Philippines' said its audited net income was 9.03 billion pesos ($176 million) in 2005, up from 8.86 billion pesos in 2004. In March, the company reported an unaudited 2005 net income of 9.15 billion pesos.

Analysts have a consensus profit forecast of 9.01 billion pesos this year, rising to 10.7 billion pesos in 2007. San Miguel said without one-off items related to its purchase last year of Australia's largest dairy firm, National Foods, its net income in 2005 would have risen 8 percent from 2004.

The company, 20 percent owned by Japan's Kirin Brewery Corp. , recorded interest expense and financing charges of 11.82 billion pesos last year against 3.61 billion pesos in 2004, largely due to additional debt it incurred to fund the purchase of National Foods.

San Miguel's A shares, exclusive to local market participants, were unchanged at 60 pesos, while its B ...

Czech Republic: Budvar settles trademark dispute with Anheuser-Busch

Czech Republich & USA: Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar NP stated on April 18 it settled the latest round of its ongoing global trademark dispute with U.S. beer giant Anheuser-Busch

Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar NP stated on April 18 it settled the latest round of its ongoing global trademark dispute with U.S. beer giant Anheuser-Busch in Cyprus, according to Associated Press.

The Czech brewery said in a statement the settlement -- the first of its kind in the dispute -- allows it to continue to sell its beer in Cyprus under the name "Budejovicky Budvar" and to use its trade name "Budweiser Budvar, National Corporation" under "strictly defined rules" on its beer labels.

The legal dispute in Cyprus dated back to 2000 when Anheuser-Busch took legal action against Budvar in efforts to prevent the Czech brewer from importing, distributing and promoting all its products that use names such as "Budejovicky," "Budweiser," or "Budvar."

The settlement was reached Thursday in Cyprus, Budvar said. It said it has been exporting its beer to Cyprus since the mid-1990s."We consider this solution a compromise favorable for both sides," Budvar's lawyer Helena Lejtnarova said.

Budvar's trade manager Robert Chrt said he expected the settlement to result in increased exports of ...

USA: The results from the 2006 World Beer Cup

The results from the 2006 World Beer Cup announced on April 15, showed that American mastery of brewing spans the world's major beer cultures from Bavarian weizens to Belgian wits-far surpassing the skills of any other brewing country.

Pitted against the best breweries in the world and evaluated by an international cadre of judges, American brewers medaled in 73 of the 85 style categories in the 2006 World Beer Cup and took four of the five Champion Brewery and Brewmaster awards.

"No country in the world makes award-winning beers in so many styles as America's craft brewers," said Charlie Papazian, President of the Brewers Association which conducts the World Beer Cup competition.

Brewers from Germany showed the second greatest breadth of brewing skill, medaling in 18 style categories while brewers from Japan, Belgium and Australia each medaled in 9 of the 85 categories. Thus, American brewers medaled in four times the number of style categories of any other brewing country.

"These results show why today's American beer culture is widely admired by beer experts all over the world," said Ray Daniels, Director of Craft Beer Marketing for the Brewers Association. "American brewers have mastered the beers of Europe and innovated a whole ...

EU: Malt production figures of the three reporting EU countries

France produced 800,000 tonnes of malt between July 2005 and January 2006. The forecast for the crop year is 1.32 million tonnes, only 25,000 tonnes less than a year earlier.

The U.K. reports that malt production from July 2005 till January 2006 was 5 % down. Production for the crop year 2005/06 is projected at 1.375 million tonnes, down 3 % from a year before, but 10 % below the average of 2000/2005.

In 2005 Germany produced 1.882 million tonnes of malt versus 2.034 million tonnes in 2004.

Australia: C&T Malt Company is up for sale

One of the world's largest malt producers, with extensive Australian operations, is up for sale with a $US300 million tag. C&T Malt, a joint venture between US food company ConAgra Foods and South African branded food and healthcare company Tiger Brands, is being offered to potential buyers. C&T Malt supplies all of CUB's malt in Australia under a long-term contract, The Herald Sun reported on April 19.

It also supplies malt to Budweiser producer Anheuser Busch, SABMiller, Scottish & Newcastle, Coors and Belgium brewer InBev. The jewel in C&T's crown is its Australian operations, the Richmond-based malting outfit Barrett Burston.

The company runs plants in Geelong and Burnley, Toowoomba in Queensland and Thornleigh in New South Wales. It also owns 10 other malting plants in Britain and Canada.

It is believed that rural services provider Elders and private equity firm Castle Harlan Australian Mezzanine Partners have recently taken a look at the business. Spokesmen for Futuris -- Elders' parent company -- and CHAMP would not comment.

It is believed that Tiger wants to exit the commodities market and expand further into branded foods. Tiger Brands boss Noel Boyle would not respond specifically to emailed questions from BusinessDaily regarding a sale ...

Investigation of Beer Flavor by Gas Chromatography-Olfactometry

A. A. Murakami, H. Goldstein, A. Navarro, J. R. Seabrooks, and D. S. Ryder, Miller Brewing Company, 3939 W. Highland Blvd., Milwaukee, WI 53201, U.S.A.

ABSTRACT J. Am. Soc. Brew. Chem. 61(1):23-32, 2003

Gas chromatography-olfactometry (GCO) is an analytical technique for evaluating the aroma characteristics of volatile constituents separated by gas chromatography (GC). This article presents three case studies employing the GCO technique in brewing, including investigation of kettle hop aroma, an off-aroma in beer, and aged-beer aroma. The kettle hop aroma was studied using a GCO technique called CharmAnalysis (DATU, Inc., Geneva, NY) and beer strongly hopped with Oregon Cascade hop pellets at 45 min before end of kettle boil. CharmAnalysis can quantitate the intensity of an aroma detected at a sniff port. It revealed that linalool was an important aroma compound in hopped beer and that phenylethyl alcohol and two coeluting, tentatively identified constituents were important aroma compounds in hopped and unhopped beers. In a second study, GCO was employed for investigating an objectionable aroma described as medicinal/phenolic/Band-Aid in a production beer. GCO was able to reveal the eluting off-odor that matched the off-aroma character in the beer. In a third case study, a quantitative GCO technique called AromaTrax (Microanalytics, Round Rock, TX) was employed to determine aged-beer aroma. This technique revealed that quantitative changes of many minor components possessing unpleasant aroma notes, particularly the carboxylic acids, were involved in aged-beer aroma.
