Brewery News
Canada: Sleeman looking at prospective buyers

The board of Sleeman Breweries Ltd. will begin considering proposals to purchase Canada's third-largest beer maker within 90 days, company chairman and chief executive officer John Sleeman said May 30, The Globe and Mail posted May 31.

The brewer's investment bankers have received "several" proposals from both international and domestic beer makers, he said.

"We have interest from brewers both inside of Canada and outside of Canada," Mr. Sleeman said, following what could be the company's final annual meeting.

He characterized all the inquiries as serious. "They're not just kicking the tires," he said

Industry analysts point to Molson Coors Brewing Co., which has a leading Canadian market share, as a possible suitor. Britain's SABMiller PLC is also thought to be interested in buying Sleeman's brands and operations to enter the Canadian market.

Earlier this month, Sleeman disclosed it had asked BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc. to review its strategic options, including a possible sale of the company.

The Guelph, Ont., brewer was forced to reveal the process after Carlos Brito, the CEO of the world's largest beer maker InBev SA, told analysts on a conference call that Sleeman was "putting the company up for sale."

Romania: InBev gains full ownership of Interbrew Efes Brewery

InBev announced May 29 the decision to purchase the remaining shares of Interbrew Efes Brewery S.A. (50%) pursuant to the decision of Efes Breweries International N.V. and Anadolu Efes A.S. to exercise their put option.

As a consequence of this transaction, InBev will gain full ownership of Interbrew Efes Brewery S.A. The price expected to be paid by InBev is approximately 20.79 million euro. This transaction gives InBev full control over its operations in Romania, hence more freedom to grasp future opportunities in the Romanian beer market.

The Share Sale Agreement is expected to be executed shortly.

InBev and Efes Breweries International N.V. formed Interbrew Efes Brewery S.A., a 50-50% joint venture, in 2000. InBev has two more, fully owned, breweries in Romania, in Baia Mare and Blaj. In 2005, InBev had a market share of 16.6% in Romania representing approximately 2.5 million hectoliters with successful brands such as Bergenbier® and Noroc®.

InBev is a publicly traded company based in Leuven, Belgium. The company's origins date back to 1366, and today it is the leading global brewer by volume. InBev’s strategy is to strengthen its local platforms by building significant positions in the world's major beer markets through organic growth, world-class ...

Spain & Czech Republic: Budvar gets green light for using Budejovicky Budvar trademark in Spain

Czech state-owned brewery Budejovicky Budvar said May 30 it could sell its beer under the Budejovicky Budvar trademark in Spain, owing to last week's verdict from the Spanish Supreme Court, CTK informed May 30.

"Although Spain is a small market for us for the time being... we expect the final decision of the Supreme Court to give our business activities a boost," said Budvar spokesman Petr Samec.

The verdict does not concern the Budweiser trademark, over which Budvar and US giant Anheuser-Busch have been leading disputes all over the world, Budvar told CTK.

Anheuser-Busch has the right to use the Budweiser trademark in Spain. Its officials were not immediately available for comment.

Samec said the verdict had given Budvar a definitive legal certainty which reduces risks linked to investment in marketing and brand support.

Budvar exports more than 4,000 hectolitres of lager to Spain every year. Last year, it raised exports to the country by 4 percent year-on-year.

Budvar exports beer to 50 countries and has more than 380 trademarks registered in over 100 countries of the world.

Anheuser-Busch and Budvar have been fighting for the Budweiser trademark and other trademarks since 1906. They are embroiled in about 40 trademark disputes worldwide.

Laos: APB strengthens presence in Indochina

Within a short span of eight months, Asia Pacific Breweries Limited ("APB") has, through strategic partnerships, ventured into four new markets - Sri Lanka, Mongolia, India and now, Laos. In this latest move to strengthen its IndoChina presence, APB has formed a joint venture with the Government of Lao People's Democratic Republic ("Lao PDR") (25%) and SBK Consultant Ltd (7%) and will hold the majority stake of 68% in this greenfield brewery - Lao Asia Pacific Breweries Limited (LAPB), the company released May 30.

Total initial investment in LAPB is expected to be US$25 million (approximately S$40 million) of which APB will be funding its share of about US$17 million through a combination of internal resources and borrowings.

Located outside the Lao capital of Vientiane, construction of LAPB is expected to commence in July 2006 and is targeted for completion by end 2007. It will have an initial capacity of 300,000 hectolitres per annum.

"The construction of LAPB is a continuation of our ongoing expansion into new emerging markets in the Asia Pacific region. Lao PDR forms the final piece of the Indochina region jigsaw puzzle for APB as we already have breweries in Cambodia, Vietnam, as well as neighboring Thailand," ...

South Korea: Beer sales drop steeply

Beer sales in South Korea showed a big drop in the first four months of the year, owing to a change in consumer lifestyles and the nation's prolonged economic slump, Asia Pulse said May 28.

A total of 55.74 million boxes of beer were sold in the January-April period, down 7.27 percent from a year earlier. Each box contains 20 500-milliliter bottles.

Beer sales had increased continuously since 2000, when the sales increased 11.29 percent from the year prior. The sales gained 8.04 percent and 2.42 percent, respectively, in 2001 and 2002, according to the Korea Alcohol & Liquor Industry Association.

However, a downturn began in 2003, when sales decreased 3.66 percent. Last year, sales dropped 4.26 percent, according to the association.

"The reason behind the decrease is that more people are consuming less alcohol due to health reasons, along with economic stagnation and social polarization," the industry source said.

"Also, with the implementation of a five-day workweek, the trend has turned toward consuming less alcohol," the source added.

Amid the decrease, industry leader Hite Co. reported a 62.27 percent market share in the reported period, its first market share over 60 percent since its founding in 1993.

Russia: Baltika files lawsuit against Russian tax authority

Baltika, the Russian joint venture brewery business majority-owned by Scottish & Newcastle and Denmark's Carlsberg, filed May 30 a lawsuit against the tax authority in Moscow, The Herald posted May 31.

The Russian tax authority has demanded that Baltika pay tax arrears of around €14.2m (£9.7m), a spokesman for the company said.

The arrears date back to the fourth quarter of 2003 and the first nine months of 2004. However, a spokesman for Russia's biggest brewer disputed the tax demand as too high, commenting: "We have filed a suit and we will continue to defend our point of view in court."
Earlier this month, Baltika posted a modest gain in first-quarter net income on sales up 13.8% to around £128 million – however, volume had been impacted by distribution difficulties caused by the severe winter weather.

Russia was hit by its coldest winter in a generation, with temperatures plummeting to minus 30 degrees and putting something of a freeze on beer sales. The St Petersburg-based company, which held May 30 its annual meeting, approved a 70% hike in its annual dividend payment.

Malt News
Ukraine: Domestic malt producers slowed down in April

According to April 2006 operative statistics, Ukrainian malt manufacturers have produced by April 2006 33.7 thousand tons of malt, which is 2% lower than the level of production attended in March, APK-Inform announced May 29.

Ukrainian Goskomstat provided that compared to April 2005, malt production has increased by 5.8 thousand tons (21 %).

Rests deriving from malt processing have made 67.1 thousand tons by the end of April, which is 9% less than the levels assessed by the end of last March.

According to the 2005/06 first 10 months official results, Ukrainian malt production totalled 315.4 thousand tons against 250 thousand tons during the 2004/05 similar period.

Scientific Digest
Polyphenols and Pyrazines
in Beer During Aging

Asaf A. Qureshi, W. C. Burger, and N. Prentice, USDA-SEA, Barley and Malt Laboratory, 501 N. Walnut Street, Madison, WI53705 and Department of Agronomy, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Abstract:
Concentrations of 18 polyphenols and 13 pyrazines in aging bottled beer were determined by high performance liquid chromatography with a reverse phase octadecyl-silica (/*-Bondapak®Ci8) column. Ten to 50 v\ of beer could be directly applied to the column and assayed. Most polyphenols decreased during storage for up to 84 days, but vanillic acid and epicatechin remained constant, and catechin and chlorogenic acid increased markedly. Quercetin was the polyphenol in largest quantity, followed by catechin. Pyrazines were monitored for 56 days' storage. Most levels decreased quickly during the first 48 hr. During the latter half of storage, increases were found in 2-methylpyrazine, 2,6-dimethylpyrazine, and 2-ethyl-5-methylpyrazine, but the remaining pyrazines did not change markedly after five days' storage. No significant changes were observed during storage of frozen beer or of lyophilized beer. No measurable loss in pyrazines occurred during lyophilization. The simple assay procedure has ready application for monitoring these compounds in beer stored under commercial conditions. Key words: Flavor-active compounds, HPLC, Storage changes
